The arrival of DC Leila Hussain sets tongues wagging - what brings this big city girl to a sleepy Northern Irish seaside town?

03x02 - Episode 2

Post by bunniefuu »

They got every last drop of heating
oil.

Mrs Downey's sister called it in.

Mrs Downey went into hospital
yesterday for heart surgery.

Her sister discovered the theft early
this morning,

so it's a fair assumption that the oil
was stolen last night.

- This is the third heating oil theft
this week,

and the third vulnerable victim.

Her sister said she's not insured.

- Wide wheelbase? Some sort of van?

- That makes sense.

I mean, they stole a whole tank full
of oil.

You'd have a hard job transporting it
in a family hatchback.

- RADIO:
- All units, theft of heating oil in
progress

at rear of 29 Glenshesk Avenue.

- Papa Delta Two Two. Show us
attending.

SIREN

- Papa Delta Two Two.

Papa Delta Eight Two.

I'm just around the corner. Attending
right away. Over.

Stop! You!

Stop!

Stop! Hey, stop!

- GRUNTING

- Shay?!

- What the hell, Ryan?!

- Why didn't you stop when I called
out?

- I didn't hear you!

- What's going on?!

- That's Ryan.

Our new recruit.

Shay! You OK?

- Yeah. Fine.

No bones broken!

- It looked like he was running from
the scene.

You going to tell your dad about this?

- Not if you buy me a pint.

- All right, dead on.

- You're Ryan's tutor Constable?

- I am.
- So you'll need to write a use of
force report

to the Inspector about what's just
occurred.

- Really?

- We're only pulling your leg.

Come on.

HE SIGHS

- How much longer is Taylor going to
be in that bathroom?

- Cheers for this, mucker.

Here, have you any brown sauce?

- You know something? I could have
died last night,

if this wee hero hadn't dragged me out
of a burning building.

- How long will it take them to figure
out how the fire at the pub started?

- Why are you worrying about that, my
wee love?

- PHONE CHIMES

No reason.

PHONE CHIMES

- Two more heating oil thefts.

Better get to work.

- Here, Finn.

Houl' on a minute, will ya?

- If I was you I'd wait for the Fire
Service report

before jumping to the conclusion that
JJ started it.

- You think he might have done it too?

- With his history of arson? It's a
distinct possibility.

- Detective Constable Jo Lipton.

- Andy Munroe.

- Did you get a look at whoever stole
your heating oil?

- Well, I, I heard a noise.

And when I looked out the bedroom
window,

I could see someone in a red hoodie
fiddling with the tank.

I wouldn't say I got a proper look at
them.

- Man? Woman?

- Sorry. No idea.

By the time I got down, they'd long
gone.

- OK.

Ryan, can you check the CCTV and do a
house-to-house?

Find out if the neighbours saw
anything?
- On it, boss.

- First day is it, Ryan?

- That's right, Mr Munroe.

- I remember when you were a wee lad.

All he ever wanted was to be a police
officer.

Good on you.

- How much oil did they take?

- Ach, not a lot.

I'm due a delivery, so there wasn't
much left in the tank.

- Have you seen that before?

- No. Never.

- My whole life...

..up in smoke!

Oh, Clint. What are we going to do?

- It's all right.

- Rebuild?

- I just don't think I've got the
will.

The energy.

- Where's the hero who saved Nicole's
life?

- JJ?

Sleeping on Concepta's couch.

- More to the point, where's the
Concept?

- Gone away for a few days.

- Visiting a sick school-friend.

- Oh, she'll be sick herself, missing
all the drama.

Here...I've just realised...

..are those Concepta's clothes you're
wearing?

- I've just been burned out of my
home!

- They look different on you. Stylish.

- Yeah!
- In a retro sort of way.

- Right, that's it.

Never mind fire investigators and
insurance assessors.

Clint...we're going shopping!

- I'm worried about Concepta.

I mean, where would she have gone?

- You know, just at this moment, I
couldn't care less.

- Concepta loves you.

As much as any birth mother could.

More.

- Then why did she run off, Siobhan?

I've got all these questions now.

About my REAL mother.

Up until yesterday I thought she was
me long-lost aunt.

Then there's the small matter of who
my father is.

I'm covered under household contents.

Mind you, with so little left in the
tank,

it may not even be worth claiming.

- We'll get you a crime reference
number anyway.

- Careful, Callum!

- Why do these things always happen to
me?

- Whoa, whoa, whoa. I am happy to give
you a lift,

but there's no way you're getting into
my car

with oil on your trousers.
- What do you suggest?

You've got to be kidding.

- What on earth?

- I can't believe I'm doing this.

Give that back!

- Feast your eyes, Sarge!

- Where're your trousers?

- It's a very good question.

- Oh, no!

- What's going on, Detective
Constable?

- Er, Constable McCarthy had a wee
accident with some heating oil.

But you'll be relieved to hear he's
not injured.

- I'd like a word with both of you.

Whenever Callum's finished getting
dressed.

We've got pensioners in this town who
can't afford to heat

their homes cos of these oil thefts.

And you two are running around...
- Yeah, you're right.

We need to find out who's stealing the
heating oil.

So, if PC McCarthy can promise to keep
his pants on,

can we get on with doing our job?

Sorry, Inspector.

I should just be apologising.

I do get carried away sometimes.

- Apology accepted.

- I'm sorry too, Inspector.

I should know better.

- It's forgotten.

How's your mentoring going? Ryan
behaving himself?

- He's a bit keen.

But nothing I can't handle.

- All right. Cheers, Callum.

- I'm sorry for getting you into
bother.

- You know what?

If you wanted to see my legs, you only
had to ask.

Here's the new recruit.

How are you getting on?

- Drew a blank on the house-to-house.

- Well, look, you can't win them all.

- What's that hat doing here?

- What, do you recognise it?

- Of course.

Polly Hamilton never takes it off.

- Callum found it in Andy Munroe's
garden.

- Andy said he'd never seen it before.

- That's weird. He must have seen it.

- Why?

- Polly is Andy's niece.

- Thanks for coming in, Mr Munroe.

- No problem.

- When we asked if you'd seen this
before, you said that you hadn't.

- I'm sorry. I lied.

It was the shock.

- The shock of what?

- Of realising that one of the family
broke into my oil tank.

- And what member of the family would
that be?

- Well, seeing as that's her hat,

I guess it must have been Polly.

Polly's mum...

..my sister...

..she's an addict.

Last year, she walked out on her kids.

Wee Jack was only three-years-old at
the time.

Poor Polly's just been going off the
rails ever since.

- Why would Polly break into your oil
tank?

- Polly and her older brother Isaac,

they think that their mum's coming
back

and then it'll all be hearts and
flowers and happy families.

- You don't agree?

- I told them.

She's not coming back.

But they just can't accept it.

The pair of them got really angry.
Especially Polly.

She threw me out of the house.

- Hey.
- Hey.

Where are you off to?

- I'm off to do a spot of community
reassurance.

I'm going to nip up to the hospital,
see Mrs Downey, make sure she's OK.

- Any objections if I tag along?

- None whatsoever.

- Er, Finn, just before we go, erm...

..are you going to tell me what's up?

And before you say "nothing", please,
just...

..remember how many years we've known
each other, OK?

- Concepta told me yesterday that
she's not my mother.

What a mess, eh?

- Yeah.

So, your birth mother, Concepta's
sister.

- Assumpta.
- Assumpta.

What's she like?

- No idea, Marlene.

I don't remember ever meeting her or
Concepta talking about her.

And then when I asked her who my real
father was, she just ran away.

- Concepta will have her reasons.

And I'm pretty sure that protecting
you is at the heart of them.

She loves you, Finn.

Anyone can see that.

Who else knows?

- Only Siobhan.

We haven't even told the kids yet.

- You know, what Concepta and her
sister did, it's...

It's not a million miles away from
what me and Nicole were planning.

I was going to have the baby, she was
going to bring it up.

- Only you guys would have told the
kid the truth.

- Yeah. Yeah we would have.

- I rang round the victims of the
other heating oil thefts.

A couple of them remember seeing kids
hanging around.

A young lad and a young girl.

One of the victims reckons the girl
was wearing some sort of woolly hat.

- That's good work, Cub.

- So Polly didn't just nick a bit of
oil off her uncle,

she's involved in a string of thefts.

- All right, we need to bring her in.

- Her brother Isaac is her legal
guardian.

We were in the same year in school.

Played rugby together.

- Have a word, will you? Bring him up
to speed.

- He'll be working in the cafe.

I'll head over.

- Erm, what age is Polly?

- 15.

- I assume that means she'll be in
school.

- I'm ringing them now.

- This news is going to hit Isaac
hard.

Those kids are his whole life.

He was meant to be going to uni,

but had to put it off to look after
the wee ones.

- You think Polly's been stealing
heating oil?

- These are just suspicions at the
moment, Isaac.

Polly will have the chance to give her
side of the story.

- Well, can I sit in?

- Of course.

Polly's underage so we'll need you to
be her appropriate adult.

If that's OK?

- Yeah. No problem.

- Er...

..just one more thing.

We're going to need to search your
home.

- Where was that?

- In a cupboard in the kitchen.

- It stinks of oil.

- What can you tell us about this,
Isaac?

- Nothing.

Never seen it before.

- Someone broke into your Uncle Andy's
oil tank this morning.

- Well, it wasn't me.

What would I want with stupid oil?

- Do you recognise this?

- Yeah. Sure.

It's mine.

Where'd you find it?

- In your uncle's garden.
- Oh...

Must have dropped it there.

- When?
- Pff.

I don't know, ages ago.

- We found this in the kitchen at your
house.

- Big wow!

- Polly.

This is really serious.

- WHISPERING:
- Stupid...

- You know, we could have this pump
tested for fingerprints, DNA.

Do we need to go to all that bother?

- No.

You don't need to test it.

- Are you confirming you used this
pump to steal oil

from your uncle's tank?

- Yes.

- I don't believe this.

- What did you do with the oil you
stole from Andy?

- I just dumped it at the tank at our
place.

- Why?

- I had to put it somewhere.

- Look, we've had reports of someone
matching your description

seen in the vicinity of other thefts.

- Well, you can't pin those on me!

- Well, according to witnesses,

the person matching your description
was seen accompanied by a young man.

Do you want to tell us who that is?

- Is he your boyfriend, Polly?

- I'm sorry, Isaac. We only have
Polly's word for it that she

was asleep when Mrs Downey's heating
oil was stolen.

- Erm, what, what happens now?

- We'll talk to the Youth Offending
Team, see what the next steps are.

In the meantime, I'll make sure that
Polly gets dropped back to school.

- Do you want to get some air?

- Yeah.

Yeah, it's been hard since mum left.

- Do you have any idea who this lad
is, that Polly's involved with?

- No.

When I find out, I'm going to k*ll
him.

- I don't understand?

Why has Polly got so much beef with
your Uncle Andy?

- He kept coming round, saying that
mum's never coming home.

Says she's a dead loss.

According to Andy, I should let him
look after Polly and Jack.

Get on with my life.

- That doesn't sound so unreasonable.

- My mum's in rehab.

She's getting her life together.
She'll be back.

Until then, I can manage.

I've, er, got to pick Jack up from
Nursery, so...

- Poor lad.

Yeah, I hear on the grapevine his
sister's been arrested.

- I can't comment on that, Mr
Pettigrew.

- Of course you can't, Constable.
Quite right.

Yeah, stealing from her own uncle.

I never thought I'd see the day.

I suppose that's what you get when
these custody battles turn nasty.

- Custody battle?

I think that's a bit much.

More like a disagreement.

- Oh, aye? According to Andy, young
Isaac has been fighting him

every step of the way.

It's costing them both a fortune.

- How on earth can Isaac afford that?

- Hmm.

- Taylor Quinn!

What are you in doing HERE?

- Working.
- Is this how you repay me?

Well, not only did I give you a job,

I kept you on when you were charged
with a serious criminal offence.

And I put you a roof over your head.

- That's why I'm determined not to
sponge off you, Nicole.

The moment The Commodore reopens,

I'll be back behind that bar with a
smile on my face.

- Well, what if we don't reopen?

What if I can't face putting the whole
thing back together again?

- Not going to happen.
- You think?

- What would this town be without The
Commodore?

What would The Commodore be without
you?

You're a doer. A go-getter.

- That's true. I am.

- No-one has any doubt that you'll
rebuild The Commodore

bigger and better than ever.

- Ah, well...

I mean, I suppose it was starting to
look a little bit tired.

- There you go, then.

We'll have no more of this defeatist
talk.

Now, enjoy your day off.

You deserve it!

- Hey, teach me how to do that, will
ya?

- I've got a surprise for the pair of
you.

- Where do you think JJ's disappeared
to?

- I have no idea.

Quinoa?! In Port Devine? Are these
people insane?

- I keep phoning him but he's not
picking up.

- MUSIC PLAYS

- You know something? That boy is a
real treasure, a real gift from God.

- Is that me?

- Since JJ uploaded that video, all of
my friends are playing it.

They've never heard anything like it.

- Mr and Mrs Dunwoody.

- It's, er, Devine Dunwoody, actually.

- Oh, well I'm glad to see you're
enjoying our hospitality.

Taylor, can you change this music?

It's doing my head in.

- Well, it's not like it's a secret.

I'm going for custody of Polly and
Jack.

- Through the courts?

- Yeah.
- Isn't that a very long and expensive
process?

- It is.

Especially when you use the best
lawyers available,

which is what I'm doing.

No expense spared when it comes to
making sure

those kids are looked after properly.

- And Isaac is fighting you?

How can he afford that?

- That's what I'd like to know.

- Why don't you think that Isaac can
look after his brother and sister?

- It's far too much for him.

Isaac should be heading off to
university like he planned.

He's only a kid himself.

- Looks bad, doesn't it?
- Hmm.

It's a total refurbishment job.

- Nicole says she's lost...
everything.

- I remember the day when she
inherited that pub.

She was a 16-year-old schoolgirl

who'd just lost both her parents in a
car crash.

And now, look.

All her mementoes gone up in smoke.

Mind you, it could have been so much
worse.

Thank the Lord you were on hand to
save her, eh?

- OK, thanks for letting me know. Bye
now.

So that was Andy Munroe

with a message for Ryan.

Something he forgot to say when Police
Constable Power

called round half an hour ago.

- What?

- You didn't know Ryan was doing that?

- No, I didn't.

- Afternoon.

- I need a word.

Now.

Go!

RAISED VOICE IN DISTANCE: Until you've
completed your probation, you're my
responsibility!

That means you do what I tell you to
do and go where I tell you to go!

Do you understand me?

PHONE RINGS

- Detective Constable Jo Lipton.

Yes, hello, Mr Carter. Thanks for
calling me back.

Oh, really?

Yeah.

No, no, that's very interesting.

Yeah, thanks for letting me know.

- Tell them why you took it upon
yourself

to go back to Mr Munroe's house.

- I wondered if the lad that Polly was
seen with,

before the oil thefts, wasn't her
boyfriend...

I wondered if it was her brother.

- Er, why?

- Your Uncle Barry told me that Andy
Munroe is going through

the courts to get custody of Polly and
Jack.

And er, Isaac is fighting him.

- Well, where would Isaac get the
money to do that?

- Exactly.

- Ryan knows he shouldn't have gone to
see Mr Munroe

without my authorisation.

- I thought I was using my initiative!

- Yeah, well, Carter's garage just
called me back.

Guess what they sold Isaac Hamilton
last week.

- A fuel pump?

- Yeah, exactly.

- So it's Isaac who's been stealing
the heating oil?

- Well, if it is him, how's he been
transporting it?

- Isaac's boss at the cafe runs a van.

Isaac was driving it earlier today.

- Well done, Cub.

That's really good work.

- Yeah, er, even if you didn't go
about it quite the right way,

but, yeah.

- That quinoa keeps repeating on me!

- What's this?

- It's mine!

Well, it's all my photographs of Mummy
and Daddy.

I was really worried it got burned up
in the fire.

"For Auntie Nicole.

"Sorry"?

- Sounds like JJ to me.

- Well, what's he apologising for?

- Sweetheart...

..I think JJ started the fire.

I mean, he's got a history of arson.

- On purpose? I can't believe that he
would do that.

- The photo album must be his way of
saying sorry.

- You don't think he's run away?

- Come on.

- Hello, Isaac.

- Officers.

- We've heard you've been driving your
boss's van recently.

Can you tell us where it is?

- Well, it's parked round the corner.
Why?

- Can you show us, please?

- Yeah, the keys are in the kitchen.

Should I grab them?
- Yeah. OK.

Go with him. Keep an eye.

Ryan? You all right?

- Fine.
- Right, come on! Let's get after him!

Come on!

- Who's going to look after the kid?

- You are!

I'll drive.

What are you waiting for? Blues and
twos.

SIREN WAILS

- He's there. Up ahead. Papa Delta
Eight Two.

Control. We have eyes on the vehicle.
Over.

- RADIO: Papa Delta Eight Two.

Confirming backup is on its way.

Over.

- Papa Delta Eight Two. Control.

The suspect is taking a right turn
down Ship Lane. Over.

- CAR HORN

Ryan! Wait!

- Isaac! You OK, Isaac?
- Ryan!

- Isaac!
- Wait! Ryan!

- Isaac, you've been in a car
accident!

I need you out of the car right now!

I need to see your hands! I need to
see your hands!

- We need to move! We have to move!

That van is probably full of the
heating oil he stole last night!

- Papa Delta Eight Two.

Are you receiving me? Over.

- Hey!
- All right?

- So Ryan saved Isaac? Just pulled him
from the van?

- Yeah, he did.

Despite Callum telling him to stay
back.

- They told us about the radio being
able to cause

an expl*si*n on the training courses.

I just didn't have time to think about
it.

- As a police officer, you never stop
learning.

That's the whole point of me being
your Tutor Constable.

- I'm sorry.

I've been a real pain today.

- Just promise you'll think before you
act in future, yeah?

And if you're not sure what to do...

..just ask.

- I will.

I swear.

- Now get yourself home.

You can tell your ma and da you saved
a man's life today.

- Thanks, Callum.

You know...

..one day...

..I hope I'll be as good a police
officer as you are.

- Problems?

- Just teething troubles, Inspector.

We'll get him there.
- Glad to hear it.

It's funny, isn't it?

Having a new cub on the team.

You've come a long way, Cal.

Come on, let's clean this up.

It was meant to be easy.

Make some cash so I could pay the
lawyers.

- Why heating oil?

- This guy I know,

he said stealing heating oil is dead
simple.

And harmless.

Everyone is insured these days.

- Look, I can assure you, Isaac, very
few people are insured.

An elderly couple that you stole from
can't afford to

heat their home for the next three
months.

- I'm...I'm sorry.

Really, I am.

- How did you get yourself in such a
mess?

- I swore to mum that I'd keep the
family together

till she gets back.

And then Andy started with court
proceedings.

I... I didn't know what to do.

- I made a few calls.

Your mum checked out of rehab over a
month ago.

- She's not coming home, is she?

- Look, you know what I think?

If you want to do what's best for your
brother and sister...

..let your uncle help.

- DOORBELL RINGS

HE SIGHS

Look who I found.
- JJ!

- The lad has something he wants to
say.

- Come on inside. Nicole's been
worried sick, mate.

- Do I have to? She's going to go
ballistic.

- She'll be fine. Just go on in, go
on.

- OK, OK.

What were you thinking? Don't you know
that breaking into the pub

was really, really dangerous?
- I'm sorry, Auntie Nicole.

It was me that started the fire.

I was lighting candles, and...
- JJ, wait.

Whatever you were doing, JJ, you
didn't start the fire.

Just had the investigators on the
phone.

The blaze started in the kitchen.

Some fault with one of the
dishwashers.

- So, it wasn't me?

- Of course it wasn't!

- What's the big emergency?

- Take a seat, love. Your daddy wants
to tell you something.

- Your gran...

..Concepta...

..is gone.

- Gone? What do you mean, gone? Gone
where?

- We don't know...
- Well, actually, I think I do.

I spoke to Father Phillip

and he said she had her eye on a
silent retreat in Donegal.

- A silent retreat?

- What, like, no talking?
- Gran won't last two minutes!

So, you went to all this fuss to tell
us

that Gran has taken a vow of silence?

- No.

We went to all this fuss to tell you
that Concepta...

..is not your grandmother.

- She's not your birth grandmother.

- She's not my mother.

- What?

- I found out yesterday, that
Concepta's sister, Assumpta,

is my birth mother.

And that Concepta brought me up as her
own.

- So...

..she CHOSE you?

Good for her.

- Exactly.

- No, no, she's been lying to you all
these years.

Like, to all of us.

- She thought she was doing the right
thing, Shay.

- You're wrong.

- About what?

- Concepta IS my granny.

She always has been, she always will
be.

And she'll always be your mum.

So has the new boy learned his lesson?

- I think so.

- Nice work, Constable.

- Thanks.

- Well, I don't know about you, but I
really fancy a drink.

And The Commodore's out of action,
so...

- Yeah, all right.

- Who is JJ on the phone to?

- His ma. My cousin Tammy.

- The sheep-stealer?

- I just knew that JJ didn't start
that fire.

- Do you know, you're really good with
him.

- Hm! Maybe I am cut out to be a
mother after all.

Ach, what's up, my wee dote?

- It's Mum.

She heard about the fire at the pub.

And the van exploding.

She thinks Port Devine's too
dangerous.

- What, so you're going back to County
Antrim?

How long for?

- I'm sorry, Auntie Nicole.

She wants me back for good.

- Will you come over for your tea,
then?

- Well, I was hoping I might stay a
bit longer than that.

Maybe for good?

- You're coming home?

- Well, now that you're not keeping
any secrets from me any more.

And Concepta's house is full of waifs
and strays...

I thought...
- Shut up.

Thank you for, erm, ignoring me

when I said that I didn't care where
Concepta had gone.

- You're welcome.

- And I've come to another decision.

I need to know why my birth mother
just gave me up.

And if Concepta's not going to tell
me, I'm going to go to the source.

So I'm going to find Assumpta and I'm
going to get

some proper answers.

- Well, Finn certainly wouldn't
approve of this.

- You don't know him.

A couple of years back,

the woman that was doing your job,

Leila Hussain, you called her,

she and Finn had a fling.

- Wow!

So you're saying that if me and you
were to make out in Finn's

office right now,

he'd have to turn a blind eye?

- I don't think he'd see it like that.

- Right, OK, so you don't want to make
out with me

because you're scared of your boss?

- Who said I didn't want to make out
with you?

- Are you sure you're the type of
officer who does

it on the Inspector's desk?

- I didn't used to be.

- And now?

- I've met someone who brings out a
different side of me.
