(chuckles) I can't believe it.

That's seven birthdays without you,

I'm so different.

I know so much now.

I have a horse,

and Jim and Dori are,

well, I guess they're like parents.

(horse neighing)

(suspensive music)

(bird cawing)

(horse nickering)

(suspenseful music continues)

Who is that?

Is he spying on me?

(bright upbeat music)

- [Caitlin] Well, I don't know when your birthday is, boy,

but I have a great idea.

How about we celebrate our birthdays together, tomorrow?

(sighs) I don't know.

We can be born on the same day, right?

Anything's possible.

Come on.

Good boy.

- A surprise party?

I can't believe you're making me do this.

The only surprise, is gonna be that no one shows up.

Oh, Griff, aren't you overreacting just a little?

I'm sure there are lots of kids who would love to come.

- No, I mean, this is their first birthday

since she's come to live with us.

Think what it would mean to her?

How would you feel?

- Oh, okay, okay, okay.

I'll call in some favors.

Brett does owe me big time.

- [Dad] I'll see you at the lawyer's office this afternoon.

- Right. Yeah, then we can get

all the Caitlin's forms filled out.

- Wait, wait, wait, wait.

You're not going through with it, are you?

- What's the problem, Griff?

- Griffen?

- Well, I mean, what's the matter with the way things are.

Could she just not steal my t-shirts and sleep in them?

And what about the nail polish on my keyboard?

(parents laughing)

She uses my razor to shave her legs.

(parents laughing)

- I thought you were all for it?

- [Caitlin] All for what?

- Um, all for one and one for all,

like the three Musketeers.

- Yeah, exactly.

- Yeah. Only with you, it's the four Musketeers.

- Mm-hmm.

(upbeat music)

- You guys were talking about my birthday, weren't you?

- No, we weren't.

And even if we were, which we weren't,

not even the pain of t*rture,

could get me to tell you anything.

If there was anything to tell.

- Mm-hmm? - Yeah.

- So, are they getting me a present?

What is it, come on? (laughs)

- Just living with me is present enough.

You should know that by now.

- Ugh, come on.

Is it a new saddle?

Bandit really needs a new saddle.

Griffen?

(Griffen grunting)

(upbeat music continues)

- [Player 1] Yeah, swish!

- [Player 2] What is that?

Yo, Griffen, pass the ball?

Griff.

- Big event at one o'clock, man.

- If Taylor and Laura, Victoria, Kim...

Why would just steal my phone book?

- Oh, oh, girls who won't go out with you.

- Party list.

- Party? - Party?

- Party. - Party!

- Party!

- Yeah. I have to have this birthday party for caitlin.

- Put, put Melissa on there.

- Yeah, she's hot.

Make sure that I'm doing music though.

I gotta be the DJ.

- All right, great.

- What kind of party is this anyway?

- A surprise.

- And that means nobody can tell her, okay?

- What is it, 10-3? - 10-5?

(upbeat music)

- Come on, come on, come on.

- You, what the score? - I think-

- Oh, oh, what?

- Whoa! - What?

- It's indelible.

And it won't even rub off when you're being kissed.

- You think the new guy's gonna kiss you?

He is like ultra good-looking.

- It's not about thinking the new guy's gonna kiss me.

It's about knowing I'm kissable.

(chuckles) Lipstick is so empowering.

- I wonder if he's gonna go to the party?

- No one's going to kiss you.

You never shut up long enough to have your lips closed.

- I don't know what to get her for her birthday.

(car door opening)

- [Sarah] Hey, hey there, buddy.

- [Dori] Can I help you?

You're looking for something?

- No, he's a handsome horse.

Sarah Finley.

You're Dori Lowe, the local vet.

(door sliding)

I'm the new horse trainer at Aspiration Farms.

I expect we'll be seeing a lot of each other.

- Oh! Well, welcome to High River.

Uh, you're gonna be working

with some really fine thoroughbreds at Aspiration.

Since you're new to the neighborhood,

I could show you some of the other

breeding stock in the area?

- That won't be necessary. Dr. Lowe.

I lived in the next county a few years ago,

I'm sure not much has changed.

(suspensive music)

(upbeat music)

♪ Can I have your attention just to show appreciation ♪

- Yeah. - Okay, here he comes.

(book thudding)

- [Boy] I'll get it.

(upbeat music continues)

♪ My scalp, is melting slowly ♪

- You're riding a good-looking Stein, is he yours?

- Yeah. Do you always spy on people?

- How old is he?

- I don't know, maybe five.

- Where'd you buy him? - (chuckles) What is this?

20 Questions?

- And his, uh, right front shoes loose.

Shouldn't ride him until you have it fixed.

(car honking)

- Hey, don't tell me how to take care of my horse.

(bright upbeat music)

Jerk!

(car door slamming)

- So, what's his name?

- Who cares?

- Well, great, I gotta go.

- [Dori] Griff, sit down.

- Caitlin, we wanna talk to you about something.

- Um, do you ever think about looking

for your father again?

- My father?

- Um, well, I-I wanted to before,

but I really don't think I'm ready.

I guess when maybe when I get older.

Why? Do you guys want me to leave?

(Dori chuckling)

- No, no. - No, okay.

No, far from it.

- We know your birthday isn't until tomorrow, but,

well, we wanna get out of this now.

- Happy birthday.

- What is it?

- Um, open it. (chuckles)

(gentle music)

- I don't understand.

W-what is this?

- Your adoption papers, Caitlin.

Jim and I, we wanna legally adopt you.

- Adopt me?

You'd be our daughter.

- Excuse me.

(suspensive music)

(smooth ambient music)

(door knocking)

(indistinct headphone music)

(door squeaking)

- You know, we didn't try to upset you?

- Why didn't you ask me first?

- We wanted to surprise you.

But I guess we didn't realize it might scare you too.

- Caitlin, we're adopting you,

it's not gonna change the past with your mother,

and that's yours to keep forever.

We just, we want you to share your new life with us,

and we wanna share our lives with you.

- Really?

Well, what about Griffen?

- Griffin's cool with it.

- Mm, what do you think my mom would want me to do?

- I think your mother would want you to be safe, and

and happy.

Are you happy here, Caitlin?

- I guess, I...

You guys, you really care about what I do.

- Yeah.

This is a really big decision for you,

and well, you get to choose.

You know, I know you haven't had that very often.

- Yeah, you're right.

- You don't have to decide today.

- No, no.

- Oh, well, um,

can I still call you Jim,

and, uh, you Dori?

- Yeah. (laughs) - Sure.

- And, uh, Griffen, butthead?

(Jim laughing)

(funky upbeat music)

- This one's really good in your stall.

(horse neighing)

Happy birthday, boy. (laughs)

(horse nickering)

Oh, you're so vain.

I probably have something you like better.

A special treat.

Yeah, (chuckles) I bet you wish

it was your birthday every day, huh?

(horse neighing)

You know, in a way, I sort of adopted you.

So, maybe it's okay if they adopt me.

(suspensive music)

(horse nickering)

- Wow, come on.

(suspensive music continues)

(dramatic upbeat music)

- What is with that guy?

(car engine revving)

- You're early, man, she still here.

- Oh. Oh!

- What is that?

- It's my brother's cologne, man.

Can you smell it?

- Oh, just a little.

Oh, no, no. - Yeah.

(spray pchitting)

- Oh, that's great.

Smells worse than your BO.

Let's get the stuff inside.

- Yeah, yeah. - You can set it up,

while I get Caitlin out of the house.

- [Caitlin] So, what's playing?

- Oh, it's this horror movie called "Croak."

- Everyone dies? - Yeah.

And you see, it's a pun because the K*llers

are genetically mutated frogs.

- Right. (laughs)

Oh, here comes.

(smooth jazz music)

(bus engine roaring)

- Buses, trains, and planes,

they all go by this 24-hour clock.

- Now, I know.

1600 hours is when the movie got out.

That's four o'clock,

or approximately one hour after the bus left.

(drum roll music)

- Honey!

- It was an accident. (shouts)

- I want to break his drums. (shouts)

- Not if I get to him first.

(drum roll music continues)

Eric, enough.

(drum roll music continues)

(Dori sighing)

(intense drum rolling)

(indistinct chatter)

(crow cawing)

- Can you go any slower?

- Stop showing off.

- You know what?

You'd be in a lot better shape

if you will lowered yourself and join some school sports.

- [Caitlin] Ugh!

- Are you okay? - No.

That bird just did it on me.

It's my birthday.

- Well, you know,

if you would've been walking faster,

it would have missed. (chuckles)

(funky jazz music)

- You are so not brother material.

- You know that whole adoption thing,

feel free to reconsider.

- Oh, don't worry, I wouldn't dream of considering.

- And for the record, no one is allowed to use my razor,

not even sisters, which you're not.

- You don't even shave, so what's the problem.

- Yes, I do.

- [Crowd] Surprise!

(crowd cheering)

- I don't believe it.

- So, we're you surprised?

- Yeah. Did everyone hear me dissing you?

- Oh yeah.

- Yeah. Listen, Caitlin, I brought my drum set.

- Great. Yeah.

- Is that? - No.

- So, you'll see me dance later?

- Um... (laughs)

(funk upbeat music)

- Hey, so what do you think of balloons?

- Oh, they're great.

But I'm just surprised, I didn't see 'em coming in.

- Happy birthday.

Um, well, I try to save some cake,

while you go upstairs and get yourself cleaned up.

- Yeah.

(upbeat music continues)

(Dori chuckling)

I definitely look older.

(chuckles) My very first surprise birthday party.

(Caitlin laughing)

Here, um, Lisa and I chipped,

and it's something we thought you'd really appreciate.

- Hmm.

- [Griffen] What is it?

- It's a makeover kit. - It's a makeover kit

- Gee, what can I say?

- You're welcome? - Thanks.

- Hey,

uh, Thank you.

No one's ever done this for me before.

- Sure.

(upbeat funky music)

- Move back, switch.

(friends laughing)

- It's Will.

- I'm Caitlin.

- Yeah, I know.

So, um, whose birthday is it?

- Mine.

Um, you are right about Bandit shoe.

But I already knew about it.

- So, is that where you named him, Bandit?

- Yeah.

(indistinct chatter)

- Yeah, I was on six different ranches before I was 12.

- I lived in six different foster homes in a year.

- First day at a new school. - Ugh, ugly.

- Yeah. (chuckles)

You know, I really am sorry about this.

- About what?

(suspensive music)

- Uh, Caitlin,

um, Mrs. Finley here

thinks that we may have one of her horses.

- Four years ago, one of my prize mayors

ran off with a colt.

We looked for them everywhere,

and then figured they probably joined the wild herd.

- Uh, what does that have to do with us?

- Um, Mrs. Finley thinks that she's found one of her horses.

- The Mayor?

- No, Caitlin, the colt.

It was a buckskin colt,

who would be about five years old now?

(suspensive music)

- Bandit?

(suspensive music continues)

No, no, I will not let you take my horse.

(suspensive music continues)

This can't be happening.

They, they're wrong about you, Bandit,

and we'll prove it.

(Bandit nickering)
