01x11 - Episode 11

- MR. GONE NARRATES:
Most of us inhabit at least

two worlds...the real world,
where we're at the mercy of

circumstance, and the world
within, the unconscious,

a safe place where we can
escape.

The Maxx shifts between these
worlds...against his will.

Here, homeless, he lives
in a box in an alley.

The only one who really cares
for him is Julie Winters,

a freelance social worker.

But in Pangaea, the other world,
he rules the Outback

and is the protector of Julie,
his Jungle Queen.

- There, he cares for her.

But he always ends up
back in the real world.

And me, old Mr. Gone...

Only I can see that
the secret which unites them

could destroy them.

I could be helpful.

Ah, screw it!

I think I'll have some fun
with them, first.

- CREATURE: Oh?

MR. GONE's VOICE: Hiya, doc.

I suppose you're wondering why
you've been tied up, dragged out

of the mall into the basement
of the abandoned Bull Dog Jar

Rubber Factory, through
a bathroom decorated in a cow

motif, and are presently in
the dark surrounded by dark blue

cannibalistic homunculi.

Everyone does.

But, first let me tell you about
a couple of the other things

that are happening around this
wide-open, glorious city

we call home.

- SARA: Hey, Glorie, are you
comin' back to school this year?

- I dunno.

There's therapy and stuff.

I don't really feel safe
anywhere, you know, not after

what happened and all.

- Well, you were messed up
pretty bad by that guy.

- OLDER BOY: Mr. Gone.

Boy, I wish I could get a hold
of that slimeball.

I'd break his spine just like
Shadow Hawk.

- YOUNGER BOY:

Me, too.

- Thanks, guys.

But he'd just k*ll you.

He's too strong.

I thought I was tough,
but I was nothing.

- MAXX: Oh, I think it's time
for a story.

- A story about the Maxx?

Oh, boy.

- SARA: So, is this one
gonna make any sense?

- MAXX: They all make sense...
at least, to me.

NARRATES: Anyway...

Maxx was resting on
the verdant jungle floor of

the Outback when the dicant came
slinking overhead.

- YOUNGER BOY: A what?

- MAXX: A dicant.

It's one of the major predators.

What do they teach you kids in
school, anyway?

- MAXX: Suddenly, it sprang.

- DICANT:

- MAXX: A pretty decent roar
considering it has no animal

tissue to work with.

- YOUNGER BOY: Huh?

- MAXX: Sure, the dicant is
a plant.

Everybody knows that.

- JULIE:

I wish Maxx wouldn't
leave the seat up.

Hm, this is still the best place
in the world to think and I've

got plenty to think about
now that I know what's under

that mask.

I wonder if he really is
my Spirit Animal or if I'm just

completely nuts.

- MAXX NARRATES:
As a mutated plant,

the dicant has no vital organs.

It has spines for teeth and
a tough, rubbery shell which

stretches instead of breaking.

It's as strong as a panther
and bright as clover and has

broccoli spasms of k*lling rage.

The Maxx slashed at it again,
and again, and again...

to no avail.

- JULIE NARRATES: This whole
thing is nuts.

Spirit Animals don't exist.

But then huge purple clawed
superheroes aren't supposed to

exist, either, and I've seen
the Outback, Maxx's weird world,

for myself.

That headless psychopath Gone
implied I created it,

that I was responsible for
everything.

There's gotta be a way out of
this, some way to...

Oh, that's just great.

There's no toilet paper.

Oh, Maxx.

- MAXX NARRATES: There is
only one way to k*ll a dicant.

Hold it by its four feet,
reach down its throat,

turn it inside out, and fling
it into sea water.

Unfortunately, Maxx was so
wrapped up in his grim work

that he failed to notice he was
smack dab in the middle of

an Isz suicide migration.

- JULIE NARRATES: That thing
I saw behind the mask wasn't

Maxx, not the Maxx I know,
anyway.

What was it?

If it was some spirit bunny
part of myself, wouldn't

I recognize it?

Maybe I'm so screwed up,
I wouldn't know my own Spirit

Animal if it bit me in the a*s.

Maybe I'm not so screwed up.

Yeah, and maybe the Toilet Paper
Spirit will show up and hand

me some fresh toilet paper.

Ah, I probably don't even have
a Toilet Paper Spirit.

- MAXX NARRATES: For a moment,
Maxx was disoriented.

Then he realized that he had
wandered into an Isz field,

a breeding ground where
the unripe Isz live, fattening

on the unwary, until they break
free in a wave and begin

their long destructive march
to the sea.

Then he saw the Emwittabway
or Walking Mountains.

These huge guardians are
the sl*ves of the sea breeders.

They keep Crabbits and
Festermoles from dining on

unripened Isz flesh.

They are maniacally strong
and fiercely loyal and, oh,

yeah, they only know one song.

- JULIE NARRATES: Thank god
for paper towels.

- You know, leaving aside this
bunny stuff, what do I really

know about the real life Maxx?

Basically, nothing.

He's a total mystery.

For all I know, he could be
a k*ller.

It doesn't feel like he's
dangerous, but I just don't

trust my instincts any more.

The sad thing is that from
the minute Maxx put the mask on,

I've been confusing him with
all my bunny stuff.

God, our relationship
is so twisted.

I'm not sure we can ever really
understand each other

like normal people.

I guess the whole thing's
just a bust.

I really don't like where this
is going and neither will he.

- MAXX NARRATES:
The Emwittabway turned

towards him.

Their every movement was ripe
with anger.

They weren't smart enough
to have

more than one emotion
at a time.

Suddenly, something drove up
from under the Isz and plowed

right at the Maxx.

The Isz fell away and Maxx
saw it clearly.

He was trapped.

- GLORIE: What was it?

- OLDER BOY: What happened?

- YOUNGER BOY: Was it a giant
Seussadon?

- Uh, no, it was a Buick.

- YOUNGER BOY: That's stupid.

- GLORIE: A car?

- SARA: I told you it wouldn't
make any sense.

- YOUNGER BOY: That is so lame.

Even I know there's no cars
in the Outback.

I don't get it.

- MAXX: Neither do I.

- MR. GONE: Wasn't that
interesting, doctor?

Now let's look in on another
part of the city...an anonymous

alley I like to think of
as "Mike".

- See, I told ya, Link, there's
light pourin' outta that wall.

- MR. GONE: I left a hole in
old Mike when I passed into

this world to find my daughter.

- I don't know, Jasper,
maybe it's a crack in Heaven.

Maybe we should tell somebody.

Hey, look!

- MR. GONE: Of course,
I had to whistle up an Isz

to lead me to her.

Little did I dream a white Isz
would make it through unchanged.

- JASPER: Quick, catch it!

- LINK: You catch it.

What was that thing?

- Who cares.

I'm gonna see what
Heaven's like.

- MR. GONE: Now, doc,
I feel kind of bad lying

to my daughter, but I love that
wacky girl.

- Brace me real good.

- MR. GONE: And I couldn't let
her see me like this, now could

I, headless and all.

The shock alone would put her...

- JASPER: Aw, nuts.

- ...over the edge.

- JASPER: I'm stuck.

- MR. GONE:

Yet another doomed attempt by
modern man to bridge the gap

between the material
and spiritual worlds.

- MR. GONE: Let's see what
that white Isz is up to.

The poor little blind guy
is trembling.

No wonder he's afraid.

This world is completely foreign
to him.

Excellent.

He's right at Julie's window.

I can feel it!

Unfortunately, only one white
Isz was close enough to respond

to my inter-dimensional mental
whistle.

The dark Iszes are so much
smarter.

Well, we do what we can.

Note the white Isz spies upon
our heroine, as the lovely

Miss Winters is about to say...

- JULIE: Ew.

This is it, all right.

It smells putrid.

Geez, did I bring a carton
of fish home and forget to

refrigerate it?

How stupid.

- SARA: Uh, Julie, there's
something I've gotta tell you.

- Hi, Sara, what's up?

- Well, see, there was this
clay and...

- You didn't buy a big box of
meat here and leave it,

did you?

No, of course not.

Why would you do that?

Never mind.
- Um...

- Well, let's crack this baby
open and learn the bad news.

- See, I wanted to know about
my Spirit Animal and the clay

told me if I...
- The clay?

What are you babbling about,
Sara?

- It's all my fault.

Julie, wait!

Don't touch it!

It's some kind of trap.

I just know it.

- Sara, have you gone
completely bonkers?

- Oops.

- JULIE: Oh, my...

It's horrible.

It's disgusting.

- SARA: It's just my...

Dad.

- MAN: Safe home, dear friends,
and come again, to behold the

mysteries of MTV's "Oddities."
