[grunting]

[electronic buzzing]

[music continues]

whoosh

[zapping]

[machine whirring]

[dramatic music]

[grunting continues]

[whirring stops]

[rumbling]

[ominous music]

[screaming]

[music continues]

[upbeat music]

[drumbeats]

Say cheese.

[camera clicking]

Thanks, big fella.

[Hadji]
'Jonny, Jonny!'

Come and help your father
with the Vibroseis Cannon.

[intense music]

Hang on, pop.
I'll give you a hand.

Now, we'll see just what's
inside this strange lava form.

[lever clicking]

- Ready, Hadji?
- Ready, Dr. Quest.

[beeping]

[expl*si*n]

Dr. Quest, look.

The sonar from the Vibroseis
Cannon is definitely outlining

some form of cave, down there.

And those appear
very much to be...bones.

[plane droning]

[Race]
'Easy now. Hold her steady.
Real good, darling.'

Now, you can put her down
on the water

or the tarmac at Mataveri.

Water sounds like more fun.

[male on radio]
'Easter Island base
to Quest Catalina.'

'Come in, Race.
Do you read me?'

Loud and clear, hefe.

I need you to stop in Hanga Roa
and pick up a two foot auger bit

'and extra drilling pipe.'

'We found something
very intriguing.'

'But it may require
a little digging.'

[Race]
'You got it, Benton.'

Chill, dad. It's under control.

Alright. Just ease up
on the throttle a little.

[propellers whirring]

Phew!

- Heck of a landing, kiddo.
- Thanks, dad.

[whirring]

[Hadji]
Dr. Quest, I've been studying
the sonar readings of the cave.

- It is a perfect sphere.
- Are you sure?

Very. The volume is four times
pi times the radius cubed.

That's a sphere, alright.

[Hadji]
'There is one
more thing, Dr. Quest.'

'This sphere is so perfect that
my calculations measured pi'

accurately past
the two millionth digit.

Unfortunately, my computer
could go no further.

[Dr. Quest]
'That's impossible.
A sphere like that--'

[Hadji]
'Could only have been
created in zero gravity.'

[Race]
Hey, we're all set
to roll here.

Only, who's small enough
to slip down that hole?

Ready, willing and able.

[mysterious music]

You gettin' this, dad.

[Dr. Quest]
'Pan more slowly, son.'

'Jonny, what on earth!
Wait, Jonny!'

'Get a close up
of those tablets.'

[dramatic music]

That looks like a Rango Rango.

A what?

An ancient tablet
peculiar to this island.

'To this day,
no scientist has been able'

to decipher the hieroglyphics.

Normally, Rango Rango tablets
are made of wood.

I've never seen
a metal one before.

'Jonny, as soon as we can mark
and log every inch of that cave'

'let's get those bones
up here, for further study.'

[mysterious music]

The sample is quite perplexing.

It's like this species' genetic
make-up was somehow...altered.

These bones are even more
enigmatic than the first set.

Whatever it is, I doubt
we'll find it in any textbooks.

Alas, poor Moai!
I-knew-meratio.

Get with it, Jonny.
This is serious business.

[Jonny]
I know.

And I'm saying that maybe

there's more to the Moai,
than meets the eye.

'Uh, yeah.'

'I bet if we scan these
bones into Questworld--'

We could reconstruct these
beings in virtual reality.

Hi-five, Jess!
Man, we're smart!

Well, let's just hope
we're not too smart.

[Jonny]
Assembling the scans...now.

Now, let's onboard
a simulated D.N.A. chain.

Hmm. Interesting.

[intense music]

Hmm. Interesting.

- Oh!
- Wow!

Either King Kong's
making a comeback..

Or we found the missing link.

Let us continue the test
with the second set of bones.

[music continues]

I've never seen a triple helix
D.N.A. strand before.

Fascinating.

[dramatic music]

Out of this world!

- Well, I'll be--
- Don't say it, dad.

[Race]
'A Moai's uncle.'

[intense music]

I hate jumping to conclusions,
but we may have found--

The remains
of an extraterrestrial.

[music continues]

- Look, no ears!
- Let's enlarge the head.

Hadji, gimme
a cross-section of the skull.

'Notice the large brainpan.'

[Jessie]
'That nasal cavity is huge!

It may not be a nasal cavity,
but rather, a sound chamber.

Similar to those found in
chiroptera and cetaceans!

That's bats and whales
to you, Jess.

Oh, really? Duh!

But this chamber
appears to be far too evolved

for simple echo location.

Jonny, put that down.

Man, these bones are hollow,
just like a bird's.

Perhaps..

[resonating sound]

[bones rattling]

Of course. The chamber evolved
for harmonic amplification.

This requires further testing.

[rattling]

Ready for good ol'
country-fried rock?

I believe the phrase is,
"Ready to rock and roll."

Hey, cut me some slack, Hadji.

Alright, Hadji. Let's start with
the same note the bones play.

[clicking]

[resonating sound]

Now, run that note
through the computer model

of the skull sound chamber.

[keys clicking]

[rumbling]

[sonic humming]

Wow! Take a look at that!

[humming continues]

[rumbling]

[intense music]

[bones rattling]

Man!

[rumbling stops]

- What's up, Jess?
- This grass.

Notice anything strange?

[Jonny]
Oh, man, either these statues
are made out of fertilizer--

Or this vegetation was somehow
affected during our sound tests.

You've really
got to take a look at this.

I've never seen
anything like this before.

Hadji, run full D.N.A. tests

through the computer
on this grass.

- And see what we get.
- I already have, Dr. Quest.

There is certainly
evidence to indicate that

the sound patterns have altered
the D.N.A. in the grass sample.

[Surd]
'Ha.'

'The Quests have stumbled upon'

a sound based
D.N.A. altering technology.

If the genetic make up
of that grass was modified

then it may work on animals,
and possibly humans.

That could mean..

Physical reformation.
I could be whole again!

Julia, get Lorenzo.
We must obtain that technology.

[Race]
'If that thing's
capable of human mutation'

man, there's moral
implications till Tuesday.

You're right, Race.

We've got to figure out
the controlling factors

of the sound chamber, before we
dare release any information.

You got it, Benton.

Never open a can of worms until
you're ready to go fishing.

[Lorenzo]
'Here's the plan.'

We take control
of the Quest camp

then wait for the boss.

[plane droning]

[intense music]

[g*n clicking]

[music intensifies]

[dramatic music]

Ow!

You ignorant
or just plain stupid.

Don't be messing with
Dr. Surd's plan.

You do like
you're told! Got that?

Oh, my! This is not good!

'It appears that Jeremiah Surd
is hacking our files!'

On the alien sound technology?

If there's one person
in the world

'who shouldn't
have the power to alter D.N.A--'

It's Dr. Jeremiah Surd.

[Dr. Quest]
Hadji, you must
block his access.

[keys clicking]

I'm downloading the sound
technology parameters...now!

[buzzing]

[Surd]
'Excellent.'

'Everything must be
an exact replica.'

With the power of advancing
human genetics at my fingertips

I will have limitless power!

muahahaha

It is no use. Dr. Surd is
already deep in our system.

Then we gotta go hot
and stop him in Questworld.

Let's do it!

Hold it right there, you two.

This is not a job
for a couple of kids.

- But--
- No buts, Jonny. Race is right.

We'll put a stop to Surd.

[dramatic music]

Questworld log on.

'Subjects, Dr. Benton Quest
and Race Bannon.'

'Countdown. Five, four,
three, two, one.'

Goin' hot!

[zapping]

[buzzing]

[Surd]
'I'm so glad you two
could join me'

'for my celebration
of evolution.'

'Forwards and backwards.'

'You see, I've decided
to reverse your genetics'

'to that of an ape.'

'And it would be
fascinating to watch'

an exceptional mind
like yours, Dr. Quest

becoming that
of a...a primate.

[sonic humming]

[Dr. Quest]
'He's using
the alien technology.'

I gotta tell you, Surd...

I really hate
your taste in music.

[g*nf*re]

zap zap

boom

[dramatic music]

boom

[groaning]

[Hadji]
'Dr. Quest is regressing.'

[Jonny]
'They're turning into apes.'

- This is not good.
- We've got to do something.

[Lorenzo]
'Yeah.'

'Put your hands in the air'

and step away
from the keyboards.

[humming continues]

[grunting]

[Jessie]
'Look what he's doing
to my dad!'

[Lorenzo]
'We're in position, boss.'

Excellent, Lorenzo.

Now, pull Quest and Bannon
out of Questworld.

You cannot do such a thing!

Their Questworld psyches
will be transferred permanently

into their real world bodies.

I think that's exactly
what the boss had in mind.

[Jonny]
They'll have
the minds of primates.

That wont' be much
of a stretch for Bannon.

Now, back off!

Questworld powering down!

[g*nf*re]

[dramatic music]

[buzzing]

[grunting]

[hooting]

Now, this is sweet!

[music continues]

- Get off!
- Give me that!

Excuse me. But, uh!

Ow!

Will you, please--

[grunting]

thud

[music continues]

thwack

[grunting]

A-a-a-h!

- Pop, it's me!
- Dad, wait!

Dad, you're Dr. Benton Quest.
I'm your son, Jonny.

Don't you even recognize me?

[music continues]

It's me, dad,
your little girl.

Your ponchita.

[grunting]

Oh, what are we gonna do?
Just look at our dads.

If Surd can alter
their minds in Questworld

then all we have to do
is reverse the process.

I'm afraid not. Our computers
are in quite a predicament.

I've got just what
the doctor ordered.

But without the harmonic files
on the main computer

we've no way of accessing
the D.N.A. altering technology.

You're wrong, Hadj.

It's kind of a long shot,
but I got an idea.

'I started thinking,
that if the bones were musical'

'the skull was musical
and the Moai are musical'

then it only figured that maybe
these funky markings were notes

'and not words.'

So, they were indecipherable

because people thought of them
as language and not music.

Let's enter these variables
into the Rango Rango sequence

Dr. Quest initiated.
It may crack the code.

Now, instruct the computer
to translate the characters

as sound patterns.

Let's hope that's our answer.

Often, one need only ask
the question correctly

to obtain the desired answer.

[beeping]

[dramatic music]

[rumbling]

[Hadji]
'Unbelievable!'

The hieroglyphics are notes.

[helicopter whirring]

[Surd]
I'm ever so grateful
for all the work you've done.

Now, if you'll be kind enough
to hand over the artifacts

and your computer files?

And no monkey shines.

Uh, sir, you really should
take a look behind you.

Really, young Mr. Quest.

You don't expect me to fall
for that tired old ploy?

No, boss! It ain't no ploy!

[hooting]

[intense music]

[zapping]

A-a-a-h!

[zapping continues]

Uh? Um?

What happened?

I remember Race and I were going
into Questworld and then..

Hmm.

- What was that for?
- I'm not sure.

But I'm just really glad
to see you, for some reason.

[Surd]
Julia, what's going on?
Where are we?

Well, these are
the Nazca plains. In Peru.

- 'How did we get here?'
- 'I have no idea.'

I seem to remember something
about the Quests and then..

...nothing until now.

The computer files for the past
three days have been erased.

I must confess
that I remember very little.

Yeah, it's like there's
something in my mind

it's just outta reach.

I remember a lot of anger
and then something weird, I..

'...I remember your
voice speaking to me, ponchita.'

I remember something about
the Moai statues and music

but it's all very vague.

Somehow, I believe
we've all suffered

some form of group amnesia.

As Jonny would say, "This is
too strange for school."

[Jessie]
Well, I'll bet
they know what happened.

Lot of good that'll do us.

They've kept their
secrets this long

I doubt they'll
start talking now.
