[Ray] Phew! I can't understand it.

We haven't seen a ghost in two weeks.

[Peter] It's summer, Ray.
They're probably at camp.

Egon, it's 100 degrees in here!

Why're you dressed like an Eskimo?

Actually,
it's a thermodynamics experiment.

By properly insulating my body,

I should be able to keep the cool air in
and the hot air out.

Egon, there is no cool air.

Oh! Hmm...

That does cast a different light
on things, doesn't it?

Ray, why are we staying in town

when the ghosts aren't?

Don't you like clean air,
cool mountain lakes

and women in skimpy little bathing suits?

[rumbling]

[Winston] You know,
if I didn't know better,

I'd say we just had an earthquake.

This building's probably
shaking from old age.

I doubt it.

This building is as solid
as the Rock of Gibraltar.

Hey! Well, I just got
my piece of the rock.

How about that, Egon?

Well, I'll be...

[snoring] [Winston] It works!

[rumbling continues]

[hissing]

This heat spell is only in New York.

The rest of the coast
is substantially cooler.

Then why are we staying here?

My research shows unusual
pockets of energy beneath the city.

If released, they'd cause
dramatic warming trends,

like the one we're having now!

I'm taking my warming trend to
a nice, cold shower.

I have to tell you...

Close the curtains when you're...

[muffled] Get me outta here!

Egon! Winston!

Wow! This is great!

This makes you happy?

I'm so pleased.

So tell me, what's goin' on?

There are unusually high concentrations

of ectoplasmic energy residues in here.

I knew it was something like that.

Large quantities of water don't usually
gather on the ceiling, do they?

Not on this planet.

I was afraid of that.

Water ghosts. Great!
Let's go after 'em!

It's late, Ray.

Besides we're not licensed plumbers.

Don't you see?
This means the ghosts are back!

They're hiding in the sewers!

This heat is really been getting to you,
hasn't it?

water pressure problem.

Mama Venkman didn't raise no fools.

[Egon] Ray, I'm not getting a flicker.

Shouldn't it be cooler down here?

Theoretically, yes.

But due an inversion caused
by a ectological cross-rip,

certain elemental imbalances
have asserted themselves.

In other words, you don't have an answer.

Precisely.

When I was a kid,
we used to talk about this.

Tell us, oh, Great Carnac!

There's an old story that Manhattan Island
is held up by a stone pillar.

And if that pillar ever breaks,

Manhattan will sink.

before you showed up,

and they're still going by.

And I'm tired.

Maybe you better try a glass one.

That was glass.

Wow! All the ghosts have gone underground!

Well, maybe it's the heat.

Or maybe, maybe there's
a new demon down there.

Wow! Wouldn't that be great?

We're professionals, not vigilantes.

People pay us to do this.

We can't go chasing after
every ghost in the universe

just because they're there.

I know, Peter.

But wouldn't that be fun to try?

Some of that orange gel.

extremely high PSI readings,

that make it very dangerous.

We saw that.

But the base substance is
an inorganic suspension

with a high quotient of lubricity.

Who?

Axle grease, man.

Oh.

Yeah. Dangerous or not,

Ray's in trouble
and we gotta save him, Janine.

Dr. Venkman, what I said upstairs...

No, you're right, Janine.

I was?

I did?

You did.

And now we've got to do
what needs to be done.

The Ecto 1 is gone,

Hey! Some driving, huh?

Well, at least I got us here.

Good, you call Triple-A,
while I unload the car.

[liquid bubbling]

Holy smokes!

The Pillar of New York!

Could use some axle grease.

Could that orange gunk be
some kind of lubricant

to keep this pillar turning?

It's a gyroscope.

It keeps the island level.

Boy, wait till I tell the guys about this!

The Pillar of New York is real!

[gasps]

[snarls]

[screams]

[electronic beeping]

Bogey at five o'clock high!

[screaming]

Good shootin'.

Sure, that was easy.

I hate to tell you this,

but I'm picking up strong readings.

-Dead ahead.
-Oh?

-[beeping stops]
-There.

[ghosts groaning]

Well, now we know where the ghosts went.

Yes, but where are they coming from?

Look! They're retreating!

After them, they'll lead us to Ray.

Watch out, the bottom looks slippery.

Doesn't look slippery to me.

Uh-oh!

[screams] I was wrong!

[screams]

-Winston!
-We'd better get down there.

[Peter] Winston!

I'm all right.

This is wild.

[crackling]

Egon! Peter! Get down here!

[ghosts groaning]

The ghosts blocked the flow
so the pillar would break.

Makes sense, they like chaos.

Never thought I would go
out like this, all alone.

[ghosts groaning]

That's it then, the last fight.

Mano-a-mano.

Oh, hey! What kept you?

You did, you dope!
What's the big idea?

Hey! What's that pillar?

Don't sh**t it! Just the ghosts!

[ghosts groaning]

They're gone!

Great. Come on.

That's it?

And that's why we've been
having the earthquakes?

Exactly, that orange gel is some kind
of axle grease for the gyroscope.

When it dried up,
or the ghosts blocked it off,

the pillar started to vibrate.

And if vibrated enough,

it would break and Manhattan would sink.

The ghosts would love that.

But who built it?

[Egon] Ancient gods?
A lost civilization?

Atlantis? Who knows?

The important thing is that we've got to
make sure it keeps running.

I suggest we blow open that blockage,

and release the, um...

The orange gunk, let's do it!

[crackling]

[explodes]

[liquid trickling]

[Janine] So they didn't believe
you about the pillar?

But they paid you anyway?

Right. For stopping the earthquakes.

Imagine a single pillar holding up
all of Manhattan Island.

I'm glad I live in the Bronx.

More of a gyroscope, really.

Well, it's hard to believe.

Hey, I was there, I saw it.

And I don't believe it.

But we go the job done.

And the city is saved.

But we all know
who the real hero is, don't we?

[chomping]

[burps] Oh, yummy!
