And I look up from my camera,

and the camel is staring at me in my eyes.

and I take a step back.

I feel something
hit me in the back of my head.

And I fall face down.

I immediately,

The camel is on its hind legs

Sure, when the w*r in Ukraine started,

And so I told my work. I was like,
"Hey, I'm leaving. I'm going to Ukraine."

I have Ukrainian family.

I was, like, very honored
that they would think so highly...

Something as simple
as, like, I had a volleyball coach,

and they, like, took me down to Disney.

I give to homeless people.
I know some people don't like that.

I'm just really grateful for is sort of,

They're like family to me.

And, like, what it looks like
to be a f*cking good-a*s guy

and be in touch with who you are

and not have to worry about
what anyone else thinks about me

such wild expectations placed on them

about what's expected of,

that I have that example.

My middle sister was a wonderful singer
and a wonderful songwriter.

We had pianos in the house.
I played horns. My sister played trumpet.

I went there on a music scholarship,
but college, it felt very directionless.

I was not the straight-A student.
I was not the honor roll student,

but funny enough,
I always tested really high.

-I've always looked at, like,

this education system
and, like, my education experience

with a little bit of spite,

because I remember
what it felt like to feel stupid.

-[Tim] I've always hated school.

But I love learning.

And I ended up joining the Navy.

-Which I have told you, right?

Okay. To this day, joining the Navy
was the best decision of my life.

And getting out
was the second best. [laughs]

Though I loved the Navy
and the things it gave to me,

I assumed that that's all I ever could be.

Since then, I've been in a lot of rooms
and at a lot of tables

that I would have never imagined myself in

and looked a lot of people
in the eyes that,

at certain points in my life and career,
didn't feel like real people to me,

'cause they were so out of reach.

And, like, I don't know
where I'm going from here,

but there's nothing that I can't do,

and there's nobody
I can't look in the eye.

[Alex] Mm-hmm.

My grandfather.
Are you familiar with the Nation of Islam?

Absolutely.

He was the National Secretary
for the Nation of Islam.

-[Alex] And he was very close.

And worked with Elijah Muhammad.

And there's a photo

in my dad's house
of, like, him and Muhammad Ali.

-Muhammad Ali is, like, one of my heroes.
-[Alex] Really? Yes!

I have... there's four photos
of Muhammad Ali in my house.

[Alex] My grandfather, he was really big
on not going to college.

But I did it because my parents were like,

"Hey, you get the grades,
you go to college."

But when it was time for me to go,
there was no money.

And I'm, like, all for
people getting an education.

But don't also think
that you have to do it to be successful.

[Tim] And talking about the Navy,

on one of my last deployments,
I remember I was in the Atlantic Ocean.

On my way
from Norfolk, Virginia, to Senegal.

First time I ever touched
the continent of Africa.

And I happened to have been reading
The Autobiography of Malcolm X.

And it, like, struck me
where I first started thinking, like...

-"Yo, I could do and be more."

I wasn't raised Muslim.

My dad grew up Catholic, but then his dad,

you know, was part of the Nation.

I asked him, "What is your religion?"
He was like, "I just believe in God."

[chuckles] I love that just because
if you take a look at all religion,

you'll find a lot
of common themes about love.

Absolutely.

So I would like to tell you more about me.

-[Alex] Yeah. Yeah.
-And, like, my family story.

For me, it's, like, oddly personal,
particularly with my sisters,

because whatever children I have
will never know their aunts.

So I want to be able to be like,
"This is what your aunt was like."

"This is what me and your aunt did
when we were six and seven years old."

But I'll never forget
the night my older sister died.

You never told me exactly what happened.

She had lupus.

One day, she checked in the hospital
and never checked out.

I remember I was
at my grandmother's house,

and, like, I was waiting on my parents.
I knew she was at the hospital.

Then my grandmother told me that
one of my cousins was gonna pick me up.

And I got to the hospital.
I saw tears in my dad's eyes.

That was my first sign of like,
"Oh, something's wrong."

Yeah.

[Tim] The big thing
I will always remember from that night is

knowing that she was gone
before anybody told me,

because I heard my mother make a noise
that I've never heard her make again.

It was primal and animalistic.

And that's my mother, you know?

-Like, it was almost out of body.
-Yeah.

After she passed, me and my other sister
were in there with her alone.

And she had her class ring on,

and my other sister was trying
to tug her class ring off her finger,

but her finger was so swollen,
she couldn't get it off, and I remember...

Like, I was like, "Can you do that?
Come on, don't do that." You know?

It was a lot going on,
but I remember, like,

I'm glad she did it.
I'm glad I have that memory,

'cause, like, I'm literally wearing
that ring around my neck right now.

I wear both of my sisters' high school
class rings on my necklace.

But my most cherished memories
are the exact opposite.

so beautiful and innocent.

because I didn't like Hillary.

But I despise the way that Trump
handled his time in office.

And I can honestly say
I put a lot more thought

and passion into that second vote
than I did the first.

I will happily admit that my first vote
wasn't the most educated vote.

You know, I'm... my background's
actually a little interesting.

[Monica] Tell me.

[Stephen] For the most part,
I identify as white.

But my dad...

[Monica] Mm-hmm.

So this is an interesting story.

For years, on my dad's side,
my grandmother on my dad's side,

she is German,

and she told us for years
that my dad's side of the family

and my grandfather's was Italian.

So I grew up thinking,
"Okay, I got some flavor here."

-"I'm Italian!" You know?
-[chuckles]

My class ring
when I bought it in high school

had the Italian flag on it.
I was so proud to be Italian.

Fast-forward, three years ago,
my sister does an ancestry.com.

I knew that this is where we were headed.
I'm so excited.

And it turns out the closest we have

is 0.3% broadly European.

-Shut up!
-[Stephen] It's not even Italian.

It's not even 0.3% Italian?

Most of it is Nigerian,
Congolese, Sierra Leonean

and primarily a lot of West Africa.

So it turns out
that my dad is actually, like...

three-fifths or half black.

[Monica] Wow.

[Stephen] I have identified
as white my whole life.

-Yeah.
-I pretty much thought I was, you know.

-Yeah.
-Turns out I'm not even Italian.

It's a really good story.
And of course, you wanna understand it.

-That's cool.
-[Stephen] Yeah.

Once I found out, of course,
I immediately found some books,

and started looking
into Ghanaian and Nigerian cultures.

That's really cool.

This is, like, a lot of West Africa
that I'm mixed with.

There's a lot of different cultures here
that now I get

to learn about on a more personal level.

-Yeah.
-I find it fascinating.

-That's so cool.
-Right?

A cool experience for you to,
like, really dive in.

And I'm really glad
we're having this conversation

because the world is changing,
and I can't wait

for it to evolve even further, but, like,

we have been somewhat forced
to think that we had to fit in one box.

Yeah.

[Monica] Growing up, in my childhood...

[Stephen] Mm-hmm.

...I would be given,
the, like, standardized tests

that said, "What is your race? Ethnicity?"

-[Stephen] Yes.
-And I was always confused.

Oh, really?

I'm mixed, right?
So my mom is from Honduras.

Okay.

Her parents are Honduran,
but they are an interracial couple.

And then my dad is African-American Black.

He has, like,
some Cherokee ancestry that goes...

-Okay, so you really are a mutt, girl.
-I'm a f*cking mutt.

I believe that you date or marry somebody
for selfish reasons.

You do it because they're gonna
make you a better person,

and that comes from pushing you
to look into new ideas.

Because in turn,
if somebody's making you better,

you're gonna do the same to them.

You're gonna force them
to be a better version of themselves.

I don't wanna settle for anything less.

[Monica] I agree.

Like, you make me feel super confident

in being here was the right thing for me
and for you.

Like, you make me feel really special.

And you give me butterflies.
You're incredibly sweet.

You're just such a good guy.

between having a good conversation

My faith has gotten me through
so many different things that, like...

I've never really had someone
that I could pray with.

this feeling ever.

Before I got here,
I never needed to feel safe.

express my past, and not feel judged.

That we can, like, have a conversation
and it not be an argument.

Like, I feel comfortable doing that
moving forward.

I love that you're consistent.
You felt sincere right away.

The desire to be loved on the inside
was something that I really wanted,

but I didn't want a potential husband.

I didn't need a husband,
but what I really wanted was a soulmate.

But I'm really excited about seeing him.

And I don't think
it matters what we look like.

When I made the decision
to not share my mom's name,

because that gave away
a bit of my ethnicity,

to then have Garrett
reach a point where he feels that

the inside parts of me and what makes
Taylor is more than enough.

To have Garrett make me feel
the way that I do is incredible.

And I'm so excited. [laughs]

[Garrett] Nobody gets engaged this way.
There's no way to replicate it.

Before coming here,
I was at a point in my life

where I didn't think that I was ever
going to find the one for me.

I wasn't able to find someone

that I connected with so deeply
and so passionately.

And

now I have.

Taylor and I have remained very strict
in not talking about appearances.

So, uh, she knows I'm white.

She has nothing else on me other
than that, and I have nothing on her.

I hadn't thought about it
until this moment,

but not knowing Taylor's ethnicity
doesn't concern me.

It's as if this experiment forces us to do
exactly what marriage is intended for.

It's for us to marry one another for
the people that we are, not how we look.

And I believe that

my love for Taylor

is so strong that it won't matter
what she looks like.
