I really wanted to meet her.

When I asked them if
I could get therapy,

I received a notice
that I didn't qualify.

Why wouldn't they set up
all of these programs?

and there's no latch,

and you have to pull the
inside of the mechanics out.

So, I pulled them out like this and,
usually, I stop it with my hand,

but I pulled it really h-hard
and then Saint ran in with chips

and I'm like, "It's 8:30
at night, no chips!"

And then it went boom.
And I was like...

I fell... I literally looked at
my hand and I fell to the ground.

And I just, like, grabbed
the table and got on my knees

'cause I just saw all this blood

and it was, like, my bone
sticking out a little bit.

And I just was like,
[softly] "Get me help."

I was just like, "I need ice."

[greeting each other]

Like, I didn't scream,
I didn't anything.

I just was like,
[softly] "Help."

Two of 'em. Yeah,
they're both broken.

Like, I just literally couldn't
do anything but freeze.

And you can't even describe the pain,
but your, like, whole body goes in shock.

It was, like, more
painful than childbirth.

The, like, tip broke off.

So, it's, like, a
floating piece on both.

- I know. I w... I wanted to die.

And then he's like,
"And it's a possibility

your nail will never grow back."

And I was like, "Oh,
come on. Come on."

- I'm gonna invent a nail implant.

I think so. I did
four hours yesterday.

But how... Who has time?

pretty significant.

therapist again.

- About your fingers or in general?
- No, no, no. Just a general therapist.

- And she was like,

"You think calm is
your superpower.

"I think you are so
desensitized from trauma

that you literally are
frozen in fight or flight."

- I believe that.
- So, then she was like,

"One time in life something
happened, and you remained calm,

"and that worked for you.

So, you will always
choose calm."

Don't you think your robbery?
You weren't calm before.

- Really?
- You don't remember that?

Kim, you were a lunatic. If
someone touched your clothes,

"That was... I was
gonna wear that today!"

You were like...
You're fully dressed...

- Hm. I should tell the therapist...
- Like, you became calm.

...'cause she's trying to
go back to, like, childhood

- and I'm like...
- No, you on... You were never calm

as a teenager, in your 20s, you
were... cried about everything.

You were bratty,
you threw tantrums.

...after you got robbed because
you stayed calm in that situation.

And you even said, "My calmness
is what kept me alive."

That's when it started. It

to figure that one out.

dragged across... a hotel room,

and the guy, I remember him-him,

like, telling me just like,
"Stay calm and you'll live."

And I did that and, like, it
served me well at that time

and, and I think
it saved my life.

But I think I've
let it get too calm

to where people could take
advantage of my calmness

or I'm just turning into a full
robot with, like, no emotion.

But let me tell you something...

Kourtney was right.

"Why do you work so much?

And I looked at her
like, "Are you Kourtney?"

I don't know if you really
understand what's driving you

and if you don't understand
what's driving you,

master of your mind.

Knowing what drives you will lead
you to your happiness and joy.

I think we took Kourtney's question
on, "Why do you do what you do,"

in, like, a defensive
way at the time,

but I think she was just saying
like, "You should recognize,

I'm running from dealing
by staying busy."

She also said that she
started to watch our show

- to do a little bit of homework...
- Well, that's probably not a good idea.

She said we all need therapy.

- Especially you.
- Well, no sh*t.

- I don't doubt it.

I really think you should be on this
journey with me and do it with me.

I don't wanna be the new
Kourtney, but I always am.

But after going to
therapy, I kind of thought

Khloé might enjoy having
someone to help her navigate

through specific
situations in life.

Orleans and met with Gypsy Rose.

- Amazing.

Speaking of, like, therapy,
she talked to me about,

like, how the system works

and even someone with, like,
such a severe case as hers,

like, they told her that she wasn't
messed up enough to need therapy

and I just thought
that was so crazy.

But she seemed really strong.
She was, like, an open book.

[Khloé] I feel bad for her.

That was just her life
from the day she was born.

- [Kim] Yeah, yeah.
- Sad.

So, we are gonna go
visit the prison.

- Yeah.
- I think it would be really amazing

to be able to bring
our cameras in and...

- That's the cool part.

- I'm excited about that.

I've done a couple prison
visits with Kim already,

so I'm super happy that the cameras
are finally allowed into prison.

Just for people to have an
inside look into the prisons,

hear their stories, and maybe
humanize them a little bit.

I had to see a therapist
for Tatum's pregnancy,

but I've never connected.

"Every dark, demonic thing,

- She had nothing to say?

No, I never got any guidance.

Like, I... Just listening.

Yeah, then she's-she's definitely

So far, every therapist
I've seen has done that.

I was actually told by one
therapist that I didn't need therapy

because I just... I process
things so matter of fact...

I don't know, it was
a strange encounter.

And I was like, "Oh, my husband,

I found him at a
drug den in a motel,"

and, like, I was saying something, but
she's like, "So, do you get upset?"

I'm like, "No, I mean... Like,
I was, like, super calm."

She's like, "Do you feel
angry?" I was like, "No."

She's like... "I don't
really think you need me."

Like, I don't... And I was
like, "What? Is she firing me?"

Like, I couldn't really
understand what was ha...

"Are you breaking up with me?"

Like, I didn't understand
what was happening,

but... I think I got broken
up with by a therapist.

You've gone through
several traumatic events.

You need someone to help you
find your exit. That's it.

It's not that you need someone
to tell you how to be Khloé.

You need someone to tell you
how to see your way out of you

hibernating and behind
the gates for 25 years.

Like, this can't go on forever.

I'm sure I need therapy. I just
don't think I'm struggling.

And I'm like, "I can't find
my way. I need a therapist!"

I'm like, "Yeah, okay.
I'll try therapy."

Like, I do agree I need to be
a little bit more adult social,

like once a week.

I wanna go to dinners.

Not, not plural dinners,
like, let's not be crazy.

I'm not dating or
anything like that,

but I'm sure once I'm out, like,
then, like, that's step two.

State Prison in Chowchilla,

and I always have such, like,
a life-changing experience

every time I go and visit a
prison and meet new people.

And I think that my
family and my friends

would really benefit
from experiencing this.

I know Khloé has such a big heart
and I know that she would feel

such empathy for the people
inside and wanna help.

Simon and Savas are
Khloé's best friends

and I just knew that they
would love this experience

and I think we need as
many voices as we can.

they... lifers and they got
out and now work for Scott.

The back story is Governor Newsom
sent a delegation to Norway,

which is known as, like, the most
humane prison system in the world.

And then said, "How do
we create prisons here

to be the most humane prison
systems in California?"

And this was the
first one chosen.

So, are there lifers here?

There are a lotta lifers here
and there's life without parole.

- So, guys that were...
- Yeah.

...at this point, are
sentenced to die here.

It's a, it's a level two, so
that means it's a lower level

and so, you have a population
that is gonna be open to

trying new things.

So, we're trying to change
the environment of prisons

and change the
culture of a prison.

- Wow.
- Um, so, here we are.

You're gonna have to just show
them here your ID and your pass.

This is kinda where they make
sure people aren't escaping.

So, here's where we're goin'.
Building C1 is a dog training program

where they rescue dogs who are
about to be k*lled in the shelter.

They train 'em and
then they give them

to military veterans and
people that need service dogs.

And if you think it's
great for the dogs,

wait 'til you see what
it does for the guys...

- Yeah.
- ...who have never had

unconditional love
in their life.

- [Khloé] Mm.
- So, it's kinda beautiful.

Do they like when
people come and...

you guys come, we feel normal."

Like, "We don't feel
like we're locked up."

This prison system is set up to be like
the system that they have in Norway,

which is more of a
rehabilitation center.

Everyone comes into the system

and you want them to come
out better people, right?

So, wouldn't it make sense to get
to the root of their problems,

give them therapy,
give them education?

But most places don't
have any of that.

They are set up to fail.

So, why not really give them the
help that they need to succeed?

So, I'm really excited to see
what it's all about today.

- So, will you guys give us the overview?

Takes anywhere from 10 weeks
to six to nine months to train,

depending on their needs.

As you guys know these dogs come
from shelters, they come with trauma.

So, it's up to us to work
as a group and as a team

to build them up for them to ready
to get adopted and ready to go home.

And it also teaches us
responsibility, empathy, compassion.

Uh, these dogs that you see here have
a... are a big part of our community.

Some of these guys,
this is a level two,

but they come from level
fours, level threes.

Some of our guys haven't
pet a dog in 20, 30 years.

And you see the transformation.

As you can imagine, prison
culture tends to dictate that

you can't... there is no
spot for vulnerability

or for you to show any
type of emotions in prison.

We're tryna change that.

Because if we... if they
are aware of their emotions,

it allows for better
decision-making.

Can we go check out one of the rooms and
see, like, how you guys live in here?

'Cause you guys don't have to be in a
crowded room in this building, right?

- [inmates] No.
- The dogs have some space.

- [inmates] Absolutely.
- [Budnick] Awesome.

You know, I'm sure it can be
difficult for people to view these men

and not think about the
victims or the victim's family.

But what are we supposed to do?

Just throw everyone away if

Prison is painted as incredibly
violent and terrifying

and just everyone is painted
more in a negative light,

which I'm sure there's
all of those elements,

I'm not doubting that,

but I don't think we highlight a lot of
the creativity and the transformations.

and are now homed...

Like, that's what Kim does.

I'm just so glad that
the cameras are here

because we do these group
settings every time I come

because when you get to meet
people and hear what they're about,

really helps you just understand,
like, don't judge a book by its cover.

And even go a little
deeper to understand

where they came from and, and
why they made these decisions.

So, if anyone's willing to share
anything, I'd love to hear.

Hi, my name is Michael Freitas.

- How you doin'?
- [Kim] Good.

I've been incarcerated
since the age of 18

and I'm servin' life without
the possibility of parole.

I'm 42 years old today.

The judge told me
that I'm irredeemable,

that I would die in prison.

And, uh, um, they
never see no hope.

They never see nothin' that a
person can actually can change.

I can tell you today, that, uh,
um, I'm in the last semester,

I'm gonna get my bachelor's
degree out of Fresno State.

Um, I don't believe that
I deserve a second chance.

But if a second
chance ever does come,

then I'm well prepared, that
I know today that I'll never

harm another individual again.

I, I really hope you
get that second chance

'cause you are worthy of that.

You really are.

I think the hardest
part for me is hearing

how young everyone was.

Like, I don't think you went in
with the intent for that outcome,

but you're young.

And to not have the hope
of a second chance is...

insane to me.

Some of these people committed
these horrific crimes,

but they were teenagers.

And think about how
different you are

if you're in your forties
and fifties and sixties

than you were as a teenager.

And, of course, they're decisions
that they have to live with

and choices that they made

and those choices
should be punishable.

But I do believe some people
should have second chances.

[inmate] One of the things
we have in common is trauma.

All of us who've been locked up, we
all come from traumatic backgrounds

and the inability to cope
with trauma experiences

are what led us to act out.

A lot of us were taught
that violence is the option,

alcohol is the option,
usin' drugs is the option.

We always call it
a tool belt, right?

We were given the inappropriate tools
on how to deal with life's hurt.

But comin' to a prison like
this, you start learnin',

"Okay, that tool didn't work, this tool
didn't work, this tool didn't work,"

and you put new things in.

And next thing you know, we
start teaching each other

how to be better people.

My name is Oscar.
I'm extremely nervous

'cause my sister-in-law
loves your show,

- so if I blow it, she's gonna be mad.
- [scattered laughter]

But, uh, you know, just
hearing Mike talk right now,

it reminds me of somethin' I
think about every day is, uh,

what my victim's mother told
me when I was sentenced is,

"I hope you wake up every day
with nothin' to look forward to."

And I realized I was living like
that way before that even happened.

And I have to be better for myself
in order to be better for society.

Because even if I do not go home, I'm
encountering people that do go home.

I do understand that not everyone
feels the way that I feel,

but it still doesn't change
the empathy that I have

for someone wanting
to better their life.

Especially if you don't know
their background and their history

and what led them to make the choices
and decisions that they've made.

That's where, we as a
society, are not sympathetic

and don't take the time to understand
where the root of the problem is.

We just see maybe their rap
sheet and who they are on paper

and there's just so much
more to them than that.

Even though they say
I'm never goin' home,

I'm gonna prove I'm
worthy of a second chance.

So, what I do, in my spare time, is
I try to mentor people informally.

I know what it's like to hurt, to
feel, you know, broken, depressed, sad.

[Khloé] It's so important
what you're doing too

'cause that... it does so
much for people's morale

and you know it better
than anyone, so don't stop.

[inmate] Thank you.

I can really see that this
prison model is working.

These men are evolving,

and they're being taught
and given the tools

as to how to deal with so much of
the trauma they once experienced.

And if any of them
do ever get out,

you want them to be
equipped with these tools.

You don't want them to fall
back into the routine and habits

that they once lived,
and it, it can't be easy.

[Budnick] We have to go across
the street to the women's prison.

This is my first time working
at a women's facility.

Oh, I've never been to a women's
one, so this is my first women's.

It was really amazing
talking to the men.

Right across the street
is a women's prison.

- [Khloé] Hi, guys.

[Kim] I'm so grateful
just to be here.

The first person I
ever helped was a woman

and it was her first time
low-level drug offense.

I was like, "How does this woman

have the same exact
sentence as Charles Manson?"

And it just didn't
make sense to me.

I was super ignorant on...

I-I never knew anyone
that had been to prison

except for Khloé for
seven minutes for a DUI.

- [inmates laughing]
- [Simon] Khloé, you got so much cred now.

[Khloé] Oh, God,
seven minutes.

[Kim] And, um, sorry
to embarrass you.

- It was j...
- It's okay, that's what sisters do.

Oh, my God. But, like...

okay, that's not
gonna get me any cred

that I got thrown
in a drunk tank.

Like, I don't think they're gonna be like,
[clicks tongue] "Good for her." [laughs]

But thanks, Kim.

I'm just really grateful to be
here, so thank you for having me.

- One thing I am proud of?

Um, getting my education
while incarcerated.

[inmate] Getting my GED,
getting two degrees,

that set me up for a
future, a brighter future

- where I don't have to do this again.

[voice breaking] Um, it's just getting
my education and becoming the best me

because, at one point in time, I thought
violence was the only thing to do

and that's... I'm here for
being extremely violent.

But today, I'm not violent and,
like, I'm also most proud about

I'm gonna have my three degrees.

This is my last semester,
and I'm also a dog trainer.

I've been doin' it for
almost five and a half years.

- I've been in now 27 years.
- [Khloé] Mm.

Kim Kardashian, I appreciate

- I appreciate you for reframing,

for changing your course,
to have the courage to say,

"I'm gonna start working on
getting people out of prison."

What keeps me motivated
is remembering.

As long as I remember,
then I'll stay motivated.

I'll continue to go to school.

I'll continue to
gain my education

because I'm worth more
than what they said I am.

So, I appreciate you
for having the courage

to see us differently, and
whole Kim Kardashian came here.

- We are worth something y'all.

I am so incredibly proud
of Kim for all of the work

she's done for prison reform

and to show that she's not
just beauty, she's brains.

She has so much empathy and
compassion to other people.

I don't think anyone would've
imagined Kim doing prison reform,

Kim going to law school, and
she's doing so many things

that people probably
doubted her for,

and she is changing
people's lives.

She's changing laws, she's
making a difference in this world

and leaving an imprint on society that
she can be proud of for her children.

[Kim] I hear everyone's
stories and I'm truly inspired

by each and every one
of you and... thank you.

[Kim] What I'm hearing
from a lot of these women

is when they first got sentenced,
they had absolutely no hope.

But then coming here, to
this particular facility,

with a more rehabilitative
perspective,

they have a full
new-founded hope

and I think that's the
most important thing.

Should the shorter
people be in the front?

- I could be in the front.
- Yeah. Short people in the front.

The ultimate solution is to have
a place that resembles a prison,

but it just has all of these
rehabilitative components to it,

which I just think
is, like, the future

and is the only answer to our
overcrowded prison systems.

I mean, it's very clear that
the rehabilitation model works.

I couldn't imagine a
place where it wouldn't.
