American Zombie (2007)

Post by bunniefuu »

[Playful music]

[Slow instrumental music]

[Rock music]

[Helicopter whirring]

[Ivan] I like it here.

Try to live each moment
for what it is, you know?

I don't know when my body's gonna decay.

Carpe diem.

That means "seize the day."

If I can figure out where I came from

And who I am, then maybe I could start

Making some connections with people.

Got some brochures, got
some T-shirts for you.

[Joel] Well, I feel like
I can make a difference.

And ZAG, it gives me a purpose.

It's all about building a community.

Great, I can't wait.

Well, I'm just like anyone else.

I want a nice life, I want to be happy.

Right?

Isn't that what everyone wants?

Ooh, you look good.

Nothing scary here.

Are you sure you want me in your film?

I'm so completely boring.

Pretty good.

[Ivan] Everyone calls me Ivan.

I like it, I guess it's
a pretty good name.

It's definitely better than Earl.

That's a hick name.

Screw it.

We're at my job.

It's a convenience store, mini-mart.

It's a pretty good job.

Work the night shift,
see a lot of weirdos,

But they're mostly homeless.

John's a normal guy, though.

[John] Hey!

Hey.

How are you doing?

John.

I know his order by heart.

One mocha espresso, one chili cheese dog,

One box of Red Vines.

How do you feel about
being a movie star?

I don't know.

You don't know?

Yeah.

Are they being nice to you?

They're nice, kind of.

Wave.

Hi.

Hi.

Publish this little zine.

It's called "Ivan's American Zombie."

This issue is issue number three.

It's how we live today.

There's a copying machine in the corner,

So, you know, when it's
slow, I can just copy.

John thought it was a joke.

You thought zombies were
a f*cking joke, right?

I did.

Not anymore.

Not anymore.

What about you, Grace?

[Grace] I don't know yet.

You don't know yet?

Come on.

You don't believe me?

I sh**t educational trauma
videos for the university.

Sometimes it's pretty bloody,

But it doesn't really bother me.

I work a lot of night
shifts, and I see a lot of

Really interesting stuff at night.

I think nighttime sort of
brings out the worst in people.

I really like wearing scrubs.

You get a lot of respect
wearing the scrubs.

People often think that I'm a doctor.

I like being thought of as a doctor.

When I was a kid, I used to make

Little super-8 horror movies.

Nooo!

[g*nsh*t]

[Groaning]

[John] My friends and
I made a series of movies

Called "Nam Man."

Nam Man One, Two, and Three,

Which was about a crazed
Vietnam vet who would

Basically just arrive at a scene

And k*ll everyone.

[Screaming]

[g*nsh*t]

[Groaning]

[John] But sort of lately
I realized that real life

Is actually bloodier than any movie.

That saying is true,

Truth is stranger than fiction,

So that's why I got back
in touch with Grace.

We went to film school together.

She's a totally legitimate
documentary filmmaker.

People listen to her, she
screens in a lot of festivals,

She wins prizes.

Thank you very much.

I just wanted to...

[John] I think people kind of like

That socially conscious stuff.

[Upbeat music]

I thought that if Grace and I teamed up,

We could do something pretty interesting,

Pretty important.

I mean, this is zombies.

That's pretty f*cking important, I think.

Who are they?

Why are they here?

Where do they come from?

This whole thing I don't
think people know exists,

That there are actual real
dead people walking around.

That's crazy.

They go by different names.

Decedents, the non-living community,

Revenants, the living dead, zombies.

But whatever they are, they are real.

The condition is caused by
a virus of unknown origin.

It's been designated R-428,

And it effects the brain
and central nervous system.

Now, we don't know how it's contracted,

But we do know that it lies dormant until

The moment of death,
and then at that time,

The virus acts as a re-animating agent.

Some become very aggressive,

Some lose the capacity for speech,

Others retain a certain amount of reason,

But technically, they're dead.

[John] So we're making
this movie or what?

[Grace] Why do you want
to make a documentary

All of a sudden?

[John] I love documentaries.

No you don't.

[John] I love good documentaries.

And I think this is an awesome topic.

I know it's an awesome
topic, I just don't know

If we'd make an awesome team, you know?

You never finish anything, John.

[John] Well see, that's
the thing, is I think

I have good ideas but you get stuff done.

[Grace] I don't usually
work with other directors.

[John] Well, neither do I.

And I don't make monster movies.

[John] Well, I know that.

You make documentaries,
you make good documentaries,

And I think together we could
make a great documentary.

We're not gonna use that little camera.

[John] Okay.

[Indistinct voices]

Okay, I just want to make
sure it's really simple.

Oh yeah.

[Grace] Like I don't want

Any of this kind of flashy kind of crap.

[Matthias] Grace?

Who do I talk to about batteries?

How many do you have?

I don't know, I think
a couple of days...

[John] Grace, look at this.

That's night vision.

So we can sh**t stuff.

We can sh**t stuff at night
and we can totally see it.

This is normal.

[Grace] Right.

Here, I'll show you.

That's normal.

Yeah.

[John] You turn on
night shot you've got,

You know we can get it.

I don't know about that.

We're not making that
kind of a film, John.

Okay, I'm just saying this
is a good option to have.

Night shot.

This is like an idea for
a medium shot we could do.

Um.

Like a low angle.

We don't use storyboards
in documentaries.

Yeah, but we can.

I mean, it's like maybe we're making

A new kind of documentary.

Maybe this is more visual,
No, no, we're not.

Have you ever seen like
an Errol Morris documentary

Where it's like, visual design?

There's an idea.

[Grace] Yes, I've seen
Earl Morris documentaries.

[John] You go, "Oh, I have an idea."

John, we're not gonna do storyboards.

Sorry, it's not that kind of a film.

Okay.

I mean, all right, I'll
just hang on to these

And I'll just use them for my own.

Yeah, go ahead.

My ideas.

My name is Rodrigo Weiss.

I'm an expert in zombie history, culture.

Pretty much everything

You want to know about zombies, I know.

In my opinion, popular culture
has done a great disservice

By portraying them as these
mindless, flesh-eating monsters.

[Screaming]

But these representations are most likely

Reflections of our own fears and desires,

Rather than reflections
of actual historical fact.

The history of zombies is
one of mysterious appearances

And brief flourishes, and
then sudden disappearances.

So.

[Guitar strums]

Terry, these guys are
gonna film in here, okay?

I'll take that as a yes.

I'll show you my room.

This is it.

Prety cool, huh?

[John] Wait, so you sleep in here?

[Ivan] Nah, I don't sleep.

Sometimes I sit, though.

I draw, play guitar.

[Guitar strums]

[John] So, that guy
out there on the couch?

Is that the other zombie?

Terry?

No, he's not the zombie.

He's the loser human roommate.

[John] Oh, ok.

He's the only reason we have

This sh*thole apartment.

It's impossible to get credit as a zombie,

So you can't rent anything.

It's either this or the bus stop.

[John] Ivan, can we
see the other zombie?

Oh, you want to see the zombie?

[John] Yeah.

Okay, hold on.

[TV playing softly]

His name's Glen.

He's my roommate.

He's a little artistic
and he needs his space.

Just a warning.

[Techno music playing]

Hey Glen, what is that?

What does it look like?

It's a void.

A void?

Get the f*ck out.

I'm working.

[Laughs]

Oh, Glen.

So, you like it so far?

[John] It's nice.

I'm telling you.

It's like Cribs.

Bathroom.

Like Zombie Cribs.

Here's the kitchen.

Uh, that's not the kitchen, guys.

This is the kitchen.

Come in.

This is more of Glen's artwork.

Microwave.

Not everything's a void.

Tell Glen that,

Because some things are white swirls.

Some things are penguins.

[John] Hey, Ivan?

Can we see what's in your refrigerator?

Yeah, like on all those shows, right?

They show the fridge?

What does everyone eat?

That's one of the perks
of the job, free food.

I try to get as many preservatives

Into my body as possible.

You know, they give me
all the expired food

From the mini-mart.

Let me take it home.

Those foods have a shelf life
of at least 57 1/2 years,

So I figure that's what I'm after.

The beer is Kennedy's.

[Andrew] Whoa, what is that?

Mind your own f*cking business!

Sorry, Glen!

Do we have a revenant population
in Los Angeles County?

Well, that depends on how
you define "population."

Yes, there are revenants here.

How do we feel their
presence in our daily lives?

Well, that is a harder question to answer.

[Grace] So do you consider it a disease?

I mean, are you worried
about the virus spreading?

The situation is under control.

[Grace] How is it under control?

Are you working on a vaccine?

We're working on it.

The Center is officially part
of the Public Policy School

Here at California College of Science.

I am currently seeking
funding for a project called

The Greater Los Angeles
Revenant Count [or GLARC]

And we aim to provide a
reliable and accurate estimate

Of the county's revenant population

To increase public awareness,

But also, and I think more importantly,

To help the government better understand

The needs of this growing community.

Sorry, are you revenant?

I would say the current estimate

Of revenant population in the county

Is somewhere between 5,000 and 7,000.

We can't pretend they don't exist.

They exist.

They deserve our attention.

It's not a disease.

It's not a disability.

It's a new population

And a population that deserves our respect

And social services.

[John] So what's the bottom line?

Are zombies dangerous?

Well, I mean, they're as dangerous

As any situation that
they could be put in,

Just like humans.

But we've made three classifications

That define the revenant population.

The first classification
is the feral zombie,

Which are beings that seem
to function without reason.

The second is low-functioning zombies.

These are beings that have
limited mental capacity

But they're perfectly capable
of caring for themselves.

And the third is high-functioning zombies.

These beings have vast portions

Of their mental facilities intact

And it's not unusual for
them to pass as humans.

[Phone rings]

Healthful Bounty customer comment line!

This is Judy.

How may I help you?

Mmm hmm, yes.

Have a great day.

Bye.

I've been at Healthful Bounty

Would you like some samples?

When you see this, you know that

You're putting something
really good inside your body.

This is our breakroom, but I
can't go in there right now

Unless I'm meeting or eating.

It's a great environment.

I get to meet new people and help them.

It's really rewarding.

Not that I'm going to
stay here forever, though.

I'm doing another page in
my scrapbook right now.

It's not done yet, but I think
what most people don't know

Is that it's an art and it's awesome.

You can scrapbook about anything

That you want to remember.

And I'll look back at this and go,

"I remember that aisle!"

You know?

Like, I'll totally remember that aisle.

I'm doing one about this documentary.

This'll end up in the scrapbook.

'Kay, ready?

One, two, three.

Oh, good!

[Grace] Can I see?

Yeah.

See, you're making a documentary,

And I'm making a documentary, right?

This is my kitchen.

We're in my kitchen.

Let's see, this is Jezebel.

She's a cookie jar.

I like cats and I like kittens

But I can't have one 'cause I'm allergic.

So I just like to have, you know,

Anything that looks like a cat.

These are my worms.

Let's see if we can find some.

[Squishing]

Paper's in here just to keep it dry.

Ooh, they're there!

Can you see 'em?

[Grace] What is all that?

[Judy] Hi, worms!

There's one.

[Grace] What's that brown stuff?

[Judy] This is all organic.

I use this for the garden.

Here's some.

Hi, buddy!

I'll just let 'em sleep.

But you don't need to be
quiet while they're sleeping.

This guy's eating with his mouth full

But he's saying, "Put a smile on my face."

Feed me your waste!"

People have a lot of
misconceptions about me

But I'm just like everyone else.

I have hopes, and dreams, and um...

Hopes.

[John] Can we see
inside your refrigerator?

Yeah.

[John] Awesome, thank you.

[Judy] I follow a
vegan, organic lifestyle.

I believe in a healthy diet.

[Grace] You're vegan?

Mmm hmm!

[Grace] I didn't know that.

Is that 'cause your
flesh is kind of rotting,

Or why is that?

Sorry, like how does it all work?

Do you digest stuff?

Or do you eat regular food?

I don't eat any refined sugar.

I don't eat anything from animals.

[John] What about...

I go to farmers markets.

What about, like, human flesh?

Do you eat that?

You know what?

I have some soynut butter

And wheat-free crackers right here.

Do you guys want some?

[Grace] Yeah, I'd love some.

I can make it.

Do you have any
injectable stuff in here,

Like blue vials and stuff or [mumbles]?

What's an injectable?

[Grace] What are you doing?

Why are you trying to provoke her?

[John] I'm not trying to provoke her,

I'm just asking questions.

[Grace] Yeah, stupid questions.

They're not stupid questions.

They're good questions.

They're insightful.

[Grace] You're being totally insulting.

I'm not being insulting...

[Grace] We're supposed
to be gaining her trust.

Why is Matthias sh**ting this right now?

Why is he sh**ting us?

There's no reason to sh**t this.

We're sh**ting everything.

It's part of the process.

[John] Well, I don't
know why you get to decide

What the process is.

This is my movie, too.

[Grace] I thought you were interested

In capturing the truth?

I am interested in capturing the truth.

[Grace] Well, we are part of that truth.

[John] Well, not every
movie is about you, Grace.

Who said this movie was about me?

Well, you're acting like it's about you.

[Grace] No, I'm not.

Why do you have to be in it?

Why does there have to be shots of you?

I don't under...

[Grace] I don't want to
talk about it right now.

No one wants to see the
Grace Lee Project, too.

[Judy] I've been
collecting these for awhile.

I can't wait to get
married and settle down

And you know, have kids.

[Grace] I didn't know
zombies could have children.

Adopt kids.

I'm still looking for Mr. Right, though.

I'm definitely marrying a human.

[Grace] Why?

This is the dress
I'm getting married in.

It's pretty, right?

[Grace] Mmm hmm.

Mine's gonna have
longer sleeves, though.

[Grace] Are you ashamed
of being a zombie, Judy?

It's just not something
I like to advertise.

[Siren]

The people, united,
will never be defeated!

The people, united,
will never be defeated!

We're here!

We're dead!

Get used to it!

[Siren]

We're here!

We're dead!

Get used to it!

C'mon, c'mon, we're all part of one.

Zombies.

Every marginalized community

Goes through the same thing, where someone

Has to fight to enlighten the public.

Someone has to stand up

For something they believe in.

My name is Joel Hoelle,

As you already know,

And I run ZAG Zombie Advocacy Group.

We're here, we're dead, get used to it.

Hey.

And it's something I
started about a year ago.

We want to have the
right to vote, to marry,

To carry a driver's license,

To have better healthcare, better jobs.

Everyone has to start on the bottom.

Zombies have to start on the bottom

And I'm the one who's gonna
bring them to the top.

So this is our reception
area where zombies come.

If they're walk-ins, they come in

And make an appointment
to see a counselor,

A legal adviser.

How are you?

This is Bobby, he's one of our interns

And he's interviewing a possible,

How are you?

A new intern.

And this is Beverly Fitzpatton.

She's our legal counselor.

She actually takes care

Of all the legal issues we have at ZAG.

You know, if anyone needs legal counsel,

She's the person to see.

This is my workspace here

Where I do the overseeing

And these are some of our monitors here

I use for security.

You can see me on there.

A camera right there.

We're not just an outreach center.

We have a job placement program.

We have a crisis hotline.

We have a counseling
center and a legal clinic.

Being a zombie doesn't
exclude me being human, right?

I mean, we all...

I mean, what is a human, anyways?

We all have to live on this
planet together, right?

Right?

[Joel] Right.

I used to be an immigration lawyer

But the field go too
crowded here in Los Angeles.

I've always wanted to make a difference.

Help people.

And then, I met Hoelle
at an Earth Day rally

And I knew right then

That I had to be a part of his life.

[Phone rings]

I know what it's like to be marginalized,

To be unrepresented,

To be lost, alone,

Looked down upon, spit upon, sh*t upon.

[Grace] Really?

You're not gonna bleep that, are you?

'Cause they need to hear that.

It's sh*t, sometimes.

It is absolute sh*t that
they have to go through.

Well I feel like I've
truly found my calling

Because we do good work here.

We have a saying:

We're here.

We're dead.

Get used to it.

[Birds chirping]

This is a nice arrangement.

It's very fresh.

It's very creative.

I work better alone, by myself.

It suits me.

Back here it's nice and cool

And it's quiet.

It's kind of like a morgue.

[Laughs]

Funeral arrangements,
they're my specialty.

You know, I know a lot
of people would find that

To be really sad and depressing but I,

I find an enormous amount of joy in it.

I mean, they're dead.

They're lucky.

It should be a celebration.

Would you mind taking off your shoes?

I mean, welcome to my home,

But please take off your shoes.

[Grace] Oh, no problem.

Thank you.

Hi.

This is my house.

Well, my apartment.

I've been here for a few months.

As you can see, I've made it really nice.

I've decorated it very nicely.

[Grace] Was it easy to find this place?

[Lisa] I did not have a
problem finding a rental.

Not at all.

It's all about visualization,

Just like it says in my books.

String art is a passion of mine.

[Grace] String art?

[Lisa] Yes, see the pieces can be

Either abstract or representational,

And obviously I do work
that's all representational.

[Grace] What is it representing?

Me.

[John] They look like voids.

[Lisa] I never thought about that.

[Rock music]

Yes, okay, wow, interesting.

Oh, hang on one second.

[Knocks]

Could you please turn that down?

They'll do that, they'll turn it down.

[Music grows louder]

Turn it up!

[Knocks]

Could you please turn that down, please?

Neighbors, what are you gonna do?

I'm not mad.

I think I'm going to
make some relaxation tea.

Would you like to have
some relaxation tea?

Would you like to have
some relaxation tea?

[John] No, thank you.

What I would like is
to see what's in here...

No, no.

You know what, I didn't
get a really good chance

To clean that area of the apartment.

You'll even cut that out?

That I said that?

I'm gonna make some tea now

But you just stay in here.

Okay, guys.

Let's find a way to get back there.

[Matthias] What?

We gotta get back there.

[Grace] John?

Not now, not now, later.

[Scraping]

[Lisa] Sometimes I get
these terrible images.

I see terrible things.

[Grace] Like what?

One, somebody is banging my head

Against a table.

And in another, somebody
is banging my head

Against a dashboard.

In the one where the
person is banging my head

Against a table, we are in a steakhouse,

And a hand that feels very large

Is banging my head against the table

And calling me ungrateful.

[Grace] That's pretty violent.

And then, I have an image

Of a steak

Partially eaten around the edges,

Being placed in a bag.

And then I have an image
of giving the steak

To a border collie.

This is the person who bangs
my head against the table

In the coffee shop.

This is the person who bangs
my head against the car.

I realize this is Bob Woodward
and this is Robert Conrad,

But they're the closest
likenesses I could find

To these images from my dreams.

And I would really appreciate it

If you would take these clues.

Surely you can figure out how
these are all tied together.

If I give you this, would these be clues

That you could take with you?

Okay.

[Grace] I guess we could try.

There is a place were
zombies can go every year

And connect to one another,

Because isolation is a
problem in the community.

It's been definitely a problem.

Actually, hold on a second.

Bobby, could you hand me one of those?

Live Dead.

For three days and three nights,

It's a group of zombie philosophers,

Freethinkers, artists.

And they get together

And they just connect to one another.

It's one of the few times, you know,

That I can go to some kind of a gathering

And feel like I fit in.

It's a place to share ideas,

Strengthen bonds,

Tell stories, help organize.

f*cking crazy.

Last year, I don't even remember

How I got back home.

I just woke up in a f*cking
dumpster in Echo Park.

I don't participate in stuff like that.

I don't need any more drama in my life.

Live Dead is a rather modern inception

Of an ancient tradition.

Greek texts, such as

On the Early History of
the Hellenes by Thucydides,

Speak of zombies as nomads or wanderers.

Other sources reveal zombie populations

As sl*ves that eventually
revolted and dispersed.

References to a "great gathering"

Away from human populations

Date all the way back to 2000 BC.

Sometimes it was a celebration.

Sometimes it was a respite from exodus.

Sometimes it was a last-ditch
attempt at survival.

[John] How are you getting out there?

I gotta lift with a friend.

[John] Can we carpool
out there with you?

I told you, dude.

No humans allowed.

No way.

[John] But why?

Are we not all friends here, Ivan?

Sorry, I don't make the rules!

[John] Well, what's the big secret?

What's going on out there?

Serious sh*t.

[John] Like what?

Are you guys eating human
flesh out there or what?

[Laughing]

Every year I create an
installation for the festival.

[Grace] It's nice.

[Lisa] Yeah, thank you.

This year's piece is representational.

It's about the ties that bind.

It's threads of memory.

Lineage.

Do you see that?

[Grace] Mmm hmm.

[John] It's another void.

[Lisa] I'm just gonna nail

A couple more of these in there.

[John] What is that?

[Lisa] Oh, sh*t.

[Grace] Is everything okay?

[Lisa] Esperanza?

Hi.

Lisa!

It's oozing again.

Okay, all right.

Let me take a look.

All right, let's see.

Okay, it's okay.

Gently down.

Ow!

There you go.

This isn't fun for me.

I know, Lisa.

But when have I ever let you down?

Let's take a look.

Yeah, decaying flesh.

It's a hot zone for maggots

No matter how clean you keep it.

Well, don't worry, I have just the remedy.

[John] Do you have any medical training?

[Esperanza] Of course.

[John] You went to medical school or...?

I've been doing this a long time.

Maybe a little unorthodox

But it works.

[Chanting]

Western medicine is obviously controlled

And Eastern medicine has run its course.

I like to think of Botanica Myster

As a holistic fusion,

Combining the best of
Native American medicines

With Caribbean folk traditions.

Big, deep breath for me.

And out.

I do see a number of zombies, like Lisa,

Who come in here for
non-traditional treatments

For non-traditional ailments.

[Grace] Such as?

Well, there are certain breakdowns

In body functions that
we take for granted,

Such as hair loss or skin problems.

Things of that nature, you know.

[Grace] Do you know how it happened?

Nah, no.

I don't really think about it.

Sometimes I like to sketch it, though.

[Flipping pages]

[Grace] Which one do you
think is the most likely?

[Ivan] Right there.

But that's just my imagination.

You know, probably that's the most likely.

The virus is not only
activated by death.

It must be a violent death.

This is why you see
such severe open wounds

Among the population.

Don't!

Many revenants have an
instinctual desire to procreate.

This is probably a function of the virus.

They've developed a toxic
mucus in their salivary glands

Which then makes it possible
to transmit the virus

With a severe bite.

Ivan's not my first zombie.

I love zombies.

I don't even bother with humans anymore.

And they call us zombie chasers,

Which is interesting.

[Grace] Well, isn't it dangerous?

Yeah.

That's what makes it exciting.

They're, like, totally unpredictable.

Zombies suck at the sex thing

But the foreplay is awesome.

Like, biting and nipping

And anyway.

[Grace] What about human
guys who dates zombie girls?

Are there a lot of them?

Sure, you know, I mean...

[Ivan yelling]

Guys will stick it anywhere they can,

Dead or alive, right?

[John] Right.

Did you see me take a spill over there?

[Laughter]

It was awesome.

Did you get it on camera?

[Grace] Think so.

Yeah?

So then.

Here's your stuff.

Thanks.

Finish it?

[Grace] We're wrapping up.

All right.

[John] What do you guys do for fun?

I don't know, I mean, lots of stuff.

Yeah!

[Laughter]

Lots of stuff.

I help him with his zine.

[Ivan] She totally
helps me with my zine.

She's like the editor of the zine.

No, this one's too cartoony.

She wrote this super
nasty love poem for me once.

I put it in the zine.

It's erotic, not nasty.

I told you!

It's erotic.

Not nasty.

You know, sometimes I think you love me

Just 'cause I work in a pharmacy.

I get him his zombie speed...

Who said anything about love?

You know, f*ck you, you f*ck!

God!

[Laughing]

I love it when you talk dirty to me.

I was just kidding!

Momo...

[Joel] So you have any
questions about the work?

This one?

I do with a lot of pediatric
emergency medicine.

The emergence of
zombie art is singularly

The most important event to happen

On the Los Angeles art
scene in the last 25 years.

I mean, this is truly phenomenal.

These artists have such raw power,

Such emotional resonance.

They're gonna make a mint.

[Artist] Enter the void.

It's pretty much about being a zombie.

What it's like.

I don't like to tell
people exactly what it is.

You kinda sort just
watch it, you look at it,

And then you decide.

That issue right there?

That's gonna be super valuable someday.

[Man] I'm sure!

Very interesting.

Yes, I'd like to speak to someone

About sh**ting at Live Dead?

In half an hour?

Okay, I'll call you back.

Thanks.

What?

Why do you keep cutting me off?

We gotta find out if they're

Eating human flesh out there.

John, can you stop
essentializing zombies

To their bodily functions for once?

I'm not essentializing zombies
to their bodily functions.

Who care what they eat or how they sh*t?

People are gonna want
to know that stuff.

You know, we are not making

A nature documentary.

We are making a film about a community.

Remember?

There's a reason that they

Don't want humans at Live Dead,

And we need to find out what that is.

John, if you think
we're going to Live Dead

Because we're going to uncover something

Lurid or disgusting,

Maybe we shouldn't even go.

Well, maybe you're saying that because

You haven't gotten us
permission to sh**t there yet.

[Phone rings]

[Grace] I'm working on it.

What are you doing?

[John] I'm logging crappy footage.

Hello?

♫ I know we're half dead

♫ But when it's all done and said

♫ We're just like people,
trying to get ahead

♫ Just want to be equal

♫ But you look at us like
we're not real people

♫ I know you want to judge me as a fool

♫ Because from my mouth
is a constant drool ♫

The ZAG job placement program

Is something that I'm incredibly proud of.

We want employers to recognize

That zombies are an untapped labor pool.

These workers, they've learned how to

Overcome adversity and
learned how to solve problems.

They've learned how to be flexible.

They're an ideal workforce.

♫ Even though we are zombies

♫ We want equal rights ♫

[Machines whir]

[Joel] Hey, how you doing?

Hey?

How's it going?

You liking the work here?

You feeling good about yourselves?

Fine.

Yeah?

Are you working five eight-hour shifts

Or four ten-hour shifts?

We just work.

[Joel] What, you mean
you're working double shifts?

We just work always.

[Knocking]

[Joel] Mr. Lee?

We had a deal.

Fifty hours a week max,

Plus breaks and overtime.

This isn't sl*ve labor.

I pay them!

Okay, you know there are
labor laws in this country

And I can report you

To the state, local,
and federal government.

Is that what you want?

[Joel] Sometimes zombies are mistaken

For homeless citizens or the mentally ill.

When they first go through the transition,

They go through this
period of disorientation.

They don't know who they are

Or where they came from

Or where they're going,

And they just wander around,

Sort of dazed.

Can be kind of scary.

[John] For them or for us?

For the zombies.

[Grace] Is that what happened to you?

It's really not important
what happened to me.

What's important is
that we're reaching out.

[Gentle guitar music]

Take a right.

Glen!

Hold that.

Grab one of these.

[Metal clanking]

[Crickets]

Encampments like these,

They've sprung up all over the city.

Not all of us are high-functioning

With jobs, apartments.

Let's see if anybody, if
he needs anything else.

Zombies having trouble with the transition

Seem to cluster together,

So I come down here once a week

And I bring them supplies,
whatever they need.

[Tape stretches]

Are there dangerous zombies?

Sure.

Are there dangerous humans?

Oh, you bet.

[John] Are there flesh-eating zombies?

Are there flesh-eating zombies?

Well, let me ask you this:

Are there flesh-eating humans?

Did you read about the guy in Germany?

He's a cannibal.

A real sick individual.

You seen this guy before?

Did I ask you already?

I come looking for missing people here.

That's what people do.

They hire me to find their
loved ones or friends.

Ones they suspect have burned,

If you know what I mean.

Zombies don't remember who they are.

They're lost!

If I do find one, the
families usually regret it,

'Cause they got to take
responsibility for it.

Or they hire me to take
responsibility for it.

You know what I mean?

[Grace] No, what do you mean?

[Yelling]

That usually does a good job.

And I would do that on the head

But I wanna show you
something else on the head.

[Yelling]

Also, it's good because it
gives you a little distance

If you wanna hit 'em like that!

[g*nshots]

[Yelling]

You wanna try any of these things?

[John] Yeah!

All right!

Good!

Oh, man!

You're a pro!

[John] Grace?

No?

[Frank] Yeah, well, you know girls.

[John] I would go for the medulla.

Yeah?

There ya go!

Of course you could always roll
over their heads with a car,

But it should be something substantial.

[Crunching]

I love it!

Don't you?

You hear that crunch?

[John] Yeah.

Yeah, acting quickly and efficiently,

That's the key.

Those few seconds make all the difference.

Anyway, here's my card.

You need me, give me a call.

[Crunching]

[Judy] I think I finally found him.

Mr. Right, I mean.

I met him the other day
while I was volunteering.

You can do the banana.

[Mr. Right] Thank you!

I made a scrapbook for him.

See?

I'm still working on it.

It's gonna take me awhile.

But it's not work when you love, you know,

When you love what you do?

It's not work at all.

Sometimes I get suicidal thoughts.

You know, I've thought about it.

So I come here and talk to her.

I mean, it's just not that easy

To destroy your own head.

I mean, you really gotta smash it up

To get the job done, so...

[Grace] Have you ever tried it?

No, I'm just...

Trying to focus on my past right now.

Okay, who's next?

Me.

How are you doing today?

Well, not very good.

Oh.

And breath.

All right, let it go.

A little longer.

There you go

Past the steak.

Five, past Bob Woodward.

Four, and where are you now?

Where are you, Lisa?

I'm very angry.

Some revenants have been known to snap

But this is why counseling
is so very important

For everyone's sake.

And I always recommend to my clients

That they search for things to bring

A spiritual meaning into their lives.

Many of them feel that
they're just an empty shell.

I say to them, "Go!"

"Go fill that empty shell!"

♫ This is the day, this is the day

♫ That the Lord has made

♫ The Lord has made

♫ I will rejoice, I will rejoice

♫ Begladden, and begladden ♫

[Group] Give us this day our daily bread

And forgive us our trespasses

As we forgive those
who trespass against us

And lead us not into temptation.

[Reverend] It's not
much, but it's enough.

Spreading God's word
to the zombie community

Has really become my life's work.

People thought I was crazy

To leave my church back in Amarillo

But I couldn't be
happier with my decision.

These zombies,

They're an untapped market
for spiritual enlightenment.

Jesus loves zombies.

Jesus was the original zombie.

I'm sure, you know, some
really strict theologian

Would have some problems with that,

But I say it, you know,
I say it to kind of

Wake the zombies up, you know,

To let the zombies know that

Hey, you're not alone.

Jesus has been through this same thing.

Hi.

Obviously you can see
some kids or whatever

Came out here and they like
to mess with something.

I mean, this is meaningful to me.

ZAG means something

And it's a real, like, stamp

Of people that are hateful.

You guys wanna see something?

There we go.

Watch this.

[Grace] You call the police?

[Joel] No.

Even if I did, we're not a priority.

They don't care.

[Grace] I think the most important thing

For people to take away from this

Is someday I could be a zombie

And I think you'd better make sure,

Before you point a finger at somebody

And say, "They're not like me."

"They don't deserve the same rights"

"And privileges I have,"

You'd better be very careful about that

Because you never know if one day

You're going to be in that same position.

And if you do, you're
gonna need to come here.

But if you are here, we'll
be here waiting for you.

[Grace] You know we really wanna see

If we can film at Live Dead.

It would really mean a lot to us.

Okay, but I explained
to you that, you know,

This is not a place for humans

And the rules are in place for a reason.

Okay, yeah, but we think your story

Really deserves to be told

And we're hoping you can
maybe make an exception

Just this once, you know.

Okay again, I don't make
those kinds of decision.

My hands are tied.

You know, I'm a participant,
I'm not an organizer.

They want to come to Live Dead.

I know, what you want me to do?

They're doing a documentary on me.

[Grace] What do you
hope to find out there,

At Live Dead?

Good time.

Girls.

[Rock music]

[Joel] We're really
looking forward to selling

Some of the merchandise
at Live Dead this year

Because merchandising
keeps the cause going.

We have some examples right there.

When I see what I've created here,

I really can't help but think

That I must have been an
artist before I was m*rder*d.

Oh, thank you, thank you.

[Grace] Is that your fist?

Does it look familiar?

Ivan!

Ivan!

I f*cking want to go!

I don't make the rules.

Ivan!

[Grace] Looks pretty sharp.

I got something for you and your crew.

A shirt from ZAG.

Here you go.

You're a small, right?

Um, yeah.

Small.

Could I get a shirt?

[Joel] Bring the rest of that, yeah...

[Answering machine beep]

[Carl] Yeah, hi.

This is Carl from the
Live Dead organization.

We've agreed to let you and
your crew film at our event.

Now, your access is going to be limited

And we can't waive the registration fee

But otherwise you're good to go.

[Answering machine beep]

[Grace] Have you
changed your mind at all

About Live Dead?

Um, no.

[Grace] You can carpool with us.

That's cool, thank you.

[John] C'mon!

Forget it.

[John] It'll be fun.

No, that's okay.

You guys could tell me about it.

[John] We'll pay for your food.

[Laughing]

[Grace] Yeah, come
on, it's gonna be fun!

You guys'll have fun.

[John] Hey, is that your dude?

That's him!

That's my boyfriend!

Hi, honey!

[John] Did you hear it?

[Man] Okay, no no no no no.

We can go to lunch or something?

You know what?

Hey, do not touch me.

Okay, look, we never...

You've got to understand something.

We never went out on a date.

You know that, right?

We've met.

[Grace] That doesn't look good.

It was a date!

It was not a date!

Jesus!

It was totally a date.

[John] Did you hear that?

Okay, I have to go to a meeting.

Can I get a ride home with you guys?

[Grace] So what changed your mind?

I don't know.

I just changed it.

[Rock music]

Okay, ready?

Alphabet game.

A in sale.

I can see you.

I can see the back of your head, John.

[Grace] Are you sure
this is the right way?

Couldn't you get a regular map?

Um, I think we're lost.

[John] I don't think so.

This sucks.

How can you tell that
this is where we are?

'Cause this is where he said.

There's a steep turn off.

Okay.

You're the navigator.

[John] See, I told you!

We're not lost.

[Light pop music]

No, here.

Take it.

Hey!

Sup, cutie?

[Laughing]

Yo, Monique is gonna k*ll me!

[John] Saying you gonna fool around?

Hurry up, guys.

Let's go.

Grab as much stuff as you can.

Hurry up.

[Grace] Let's just do it all at once.

Okay, ready?

Andrew, you got that side?

Have you guys ever noticed

That all zombies have four-letter names?

Like "John?"

Yeah, a lot like "John."

[Laughing]

[John] I have one question.

Yeah?

Why are we so far away from the action?

[Grace] We have to stay objective.

Yes, absolutely.

All right.

All right.

I never drew that on paper.

It costs more, but yeah.

[Man] Do you want a plate of something?

We got plates over there.

Half-breeds.

It's half-breeds.

They're half-breeds.

Well, this is my seventh year.

It's been going for a little while now

But I think I've brought

More of the young element to it.

It used to be more of,
like, a meeting with elders.

It's amazing out here.

I mean, have you seen the art?

Have you seen the games?

Have you seen people coming together?

Everyone's truly alive.

It's a place where we can let go.

So many people think that

We're like these evil
creatures or something.

And look!

I'm just like you.

[Crickets]

[Grace] Well that
was pretty interesting.

[John] Ugh, no it wasn't.

That was boring.

It was like a company picnic.

[Grace] It wasn't that bad.

[John] I think we
should split up tomorrow.

[Grace] Why?

[John] 'Cause I think
we'll get better stuff.

[Grace] I think we
should stick together.

You know, we're a team.

[John] Goodnight, Matthias.

[John] It's 7:00 in the morning.

Ready for another day of zombies?

That's Matthias Diaz-Grunsky,
cinematographer.

Andrew Amondson, sound person.

Grace, time to wake up!

Grace, time to wake up!

It's, like, 7:00.

Let's go.

This is your video diary.

Can you stop sh**ting me?

[John] Say please.

Please.

[John] Say, "I love you, John."

[Laughing]

I love you, John.

[John] I love you, too.

[John] Hello!

Hey, no humans allowed!

[John] Oh, whoa whoa whoa whoa!

We're here...

No humans!

[John] We have permission.

We have permission to be here.

[Grace] Yeah.

We're sh**ting a...

No humans allowed!

[John] Hold on.

Just calm it down.

We got this, hold on one sec.

You don't have to point the g*n at us.

[Grace] How do you
amuse yourself out here?

That guy.

Keeps me pretty happy.

Kick him around.

Kick each other around.

Watch each other.

Knock, knock.

[John] [mumbles]

Knock, knock.

[John] Uh, who's there?

Nothing.

[John] Nothing?

Nothing who?

[Laughing]

Was that a joke?

What was that?

This is a really wonderful place.

You can envision yourself almost like

You're on another planet.

Why do you pause, dude?

Let's see 'em!

[Lisa] Free from all the violence,

And all the anger and the hatred

That we have in our society.

I stenciled the names and the dates of...

All of these people, they
died in the last year.

And I did flower arrangements

For every single one of those people.

[Grace] And does it have a title?

We Are All One.

That's it!

[Guitar strums]

♫ I was lost and full of doubt

♫ It was not long ago

♫ Stranded like a refugee

♫ From where I still don't know

♫ But I took a long hard look

♫ And knew I had to go and find a way

♫ Find a way

♫ Find a way

♫ Find a way

♫ Find a way to say that I'm a zombie too

♫ I know that you're down and out

♫ Because you have no clue

♫ Who you once were

♫ Why you're here

♫ Or when you will be through

♫ You only know

♫ Who you are now

♫ So all you need to do

♫ Is find a way

♫ Find a way

♫ Find a way

♫ Find a way

♫ Find a way to say that

♫ you're a zombie too

♫ Yeah ♫

Do you feel alone?

Why don't come by

And just talk to one of our counselors.

I think that would fit you nicely.

Buttons are a dollar.

These are five.

Put that on your wrist there.

See if that fits.

[Rock music]

Hi!

Did you come to look at my installation?

No?

Excuse me, all zombies!

There is beautiful, life-changing art

Happening right over here

If you would only pay attention.

[Cheering]

[Stag] Did we have
a fantastic day today?

[Cheering]

Are we having fun yet?

[Cheering]

Look at the moon!

Everyone, howl at the moon!

[Howling]

Can you feel it?

[Cheering]

Are we ready to party once again?

Can we keep it going all night long?

DJ Chad!

[Techno music]

[Zombies groaning]

[Grace] John?

John?

John?

John?

John?

John?

John!

John?

John!

[Door creaks]

[Grace] sh*t.

Something happened to our tent.

[Andrew] John?

[Grace] John?

[Andrew] Holy sh*t.

f*ck.

Maybe we didn't...

Hold back, hold back, hold back.

[Grace] f*ck!

What about the tapes?

You got those?

Yeah, yeah.

They're here.

Your jeans?

You have everything?

Hello?

Who is that?

Who's there?

Andy!

[Andrew] Get something, get something.

Jesus, grab something.

[Grace] John!

[Andrew] Whoa, wait.

Something's wrong with John.

John, you all right?

John, are you all right?

[John] Leave me alone.

Get that flashlight out of my face.

Oh my God, I'm gonna throw up.

[Groaning]

[Andrew] Grace!

Grace, wake up!

[Grace] What is that?

[Andrew] Think they're gone?

Shh!

[Groaning and scratching]

Who is that?

[Footsteps]

[Whimpering]

[Grace] John?

Hmm?

[Grace] What the hell
happened last night?

Where'd you go?

I drank some of that blue stuff.

[Grace] You drank it?

Yeah, they wanted me to inject it

But I wouldn't do it.

[Grace] That was really stupid,

Not to mention unethical.

Well, I didn't want to just sit there.

You're the one who said we
had to gain their trust.

[Grace] Yeah, but not by
putting your life in danger.

I saw some really
screwed up sh*t, Grace.

[Grace] Like what?

[Camera pings]

I don't see anything.

[John] Well, I shot it.

It should be on there.

[Grace] Well maybe you were
too high to press record.

[John] I pressed record.

[Grace] Someone tried to
get into our tent last night.

Whoa, like a coyote?

[Grace] No, not like a coyote.

You sure?

[Grace] I'm positive.

You know, it could've been the wind.

[Grace] Is there
something we should know?

Like what?

[Grace] Like, are we safe out here?

Safe?

Of course you're safe, Grace.

You know, wear your sunscreen

'Cause it's really strong today, okay?

What?

That guy is full of sh*t.

Should we even be here right now?

Yes, we should be here.

We have so much more to get.

Vote.

Who wants to stay and keep sh**ting?

Yeah, I mean, we've
been here for two days...

[Grace] Matthias?

Yes.

[Matthias] Yeah.

Okay, three against one.

It's not against one,

I just want to make sure
you guys are cool with this.

[Andrew] Wait, hold on,
hold on, hold on guys.

Check them out.

That's definitely not zombie.

[John] What?

Where?

[Grace] You're sh**ting this, right?

[John] Are you sh**ting this?

Is my mic on?

Is the camera on?

[Grace] Okay, John, it's good.

[John] My mic on?

Got my mic on?

[Grace] Yep.

Hey!

Hello.

Hi!

[John] You guys humans?

Yeah.

[John] We thought
humans weren't allowed?

But you're here?

[Grace] We're filmmakers.

I know.

[Grace] Are you guys filmmakers, too?

Nope.

[Grace] So what are you doing here?

Um, it's a long story.

[Grace] What's a long story?

We gotta go.

[Rock music]

[Grace] Wait a second!

[John] See how fast
that guy walked away?

♫ Time

♫ You're such a fantasy

♫ Why don't you stop for me

♫ Into the darkness

♫ Tell me

♫ You need to set me free

♫ You comfort and t*rture me

♫ Fall into ♫

[Stag] This is not the real world.

This is our world!

The end of time.

The end of space.

The end of death.

[Cheering]

By coming together,

We can truly set the wheels

In motion.

The wheels

Of a new world order!

[Cheering]

[John] Fellow humans!

What are you guys doing?

Grab the camera, grab the sound...

[Grace] I don't!

[Andrew] Whoa whoa whoa whoa!

[Joel] You guys can leave on your own,

Or we can help you guys outta here.

You have your stuff.

[Joel] Hold up.

Hold on a second, listen.

It's nothing personal.

It's just for your own safety.

[John] Well, you don't
need to worry about us.

Well we wouldn't want
you to get the wrong idea.

[Grace] About what?

About things.

It's a sensitivity issue.

I'm sure you can understand that.

[Grace] We didn't come all this way

To not film the final night.

[John] Yeah, we have an agreement.

We have a release form from...

My hands are tied.

I'm sorry.

[Grace] Well, maybe you
can talk to the organizer?

I'm sorry, it's impossible.

[John] We're not leaving.

I'm sorry.

[Grace] What about them?

Why do they get to stay?

[Andrew] He said he was sorry.

Let's go!

[John] Hey, they're humans too.

I thought you said no humans!

[Man] Let's go, guys.

[John] Get your hands off me!

[Man] Hey, is that running?

[John] Watch it!

I'm walking.

Hey, give me that camera!

What did I say about the camera?

Is that sound still going?

Is that sound still going?

Is it still working?

[Matthias] Yeah.

[John] Do you have a
knife or something, Andrew?

Do you have a knife, Matthias?

[Matthias] Should we get,
like, sticks or something?

[Andrew] Wasn't that that human girl?

[Grace] Shh.

What are they doing?

[Chanting]

[Guitar strums]

♫ Life and death

♫ And in between

♫ Wide awake

♫ Inside a dream

♫ The time is now

♫ And I won't hesitate

♫ No need to think

♫ That I have found my faith

♫ I am one of you

♫ I am one

♫ Of you ♫

[Crowd cheers]

[Gnawing]

[Screaming]

[John] Let's get out of here!

Get out of here!

Let's see.

This is the Live Dead
issue of American Zombie.

Yeah, it's kind of crooked.

I know.

Monique couldn't help me with the layout.

She kind of broke up with me.

She's dating Glen now.

Well anyway, they moved
to a nicer apartment

And so I'm stuck with Kennedy.

Yay for me.

[Grace] So what happened out there?

Where?

[Grace] At Live Dead.

We saw a woman die out there.

[John] We saw it, Ivan.

[Laughing]

You though that sounded real?

[John] Yeah.

That's sick!

That's sick, man.

You're a sick m*therf*cker.

That'd be awesome, though, if it was real.

That's like some real horror sh*t.

Not like that fake crap on television.

It was symbolic.

Haven't you ever heart of performance art?

Or special effects?

I mean, I knew you guys would get

The wrong impression.

You know what,

I want you to meet some
of our new interns.

Hey, Carl?

Jake?

[Grace] What happened
to Maude and her friends?

[Joel] What do you mean?

[Grace] What did you do to them?

We gave them $1,000 each

And we drove them off to Garden Grove.

Oh, have you ever been to Garden Grove?

It's a wasteland!

[Grace] Well, can I get
her contact information?

'Cause I'd really like to interview her

About her experiences.

You know, I don't have that
information on me right now.

[Grace] Can you get it?

Grace, it's Hoelle.

I mean, why are you being so hostile?

[Grace] I am not being hostile, Joel.

I just asked you a simple question:

What happened to her?

I answered your question.

[John] No, you haven't
answered that question.

You know, whatever.

I thought you guys were filmmakers.

[Grace] Yeah?

Don't you guys make a living
manipulating the truth...

[Grace] We are filmmakers.

Okay, I...

[Grace] We're just being responsible.

Okay, well, I gotta
get to work, so whatever.

Grow up.

What are you doing?

Zombie Advocacy Group?

What a pile of horseshit.

There's no paperwork on 'em,

They got no business license,

No checking records.

Even their lease is a forgery.

I mean, don't you do any g*dd*mn research?

Do you believe everything
anyone tells you?

Jesus.

[Grace] What about Maude?

Maude?

I couldn't dig up anything on the girl.

Maybe she was using a phony name, but...

I did manage to find,
though, a classified ad.

Subjects wanted to realize eternal life.

Five minutes later I had a
fax with a purchase order

With Joel's name, address,
and phone number on it.

I'd like to see him deny this.

[Grace] Can I see the ad?

Hey, have you guys made any progress?

[Grace] What do you mean?

You know, looking into my past?

Who I am?

You know, where I came from?

[Grace] Actually, no.

We haven't really been looking into that.

Well, you better get working on that.

I mean, you're not going
to have much footage.

I know it takes time, but
you're not going to have

Much of a film unless you get moving.

[John] We're sort of trying

To wrap up production right now.

[Grace] We pretty much have all we need.

[John] Yeah.

What does that mean?

[Grace] Um...

We're done sh**ting, so...

Yeah, but what about me?

Just because you promised me,

When we started this, you promised me

That you were gonna help me out.

[Grace] I don't know if I promised that.

Yeah, you did promise me.

Otherwise I would never be

In this shitty film in the first place.

[Grace] No, I think...

You think I have a lot
of free time on my hands?

Just to hang out with you guys?

[Grace] Actually, I thought you agreed

To be in the film
because you wanted people

To know about your story?

That's bullshit.

It's such bullshit, Grace,

And you know it's bullshit!

[Grace] It's not bullshit.

You guys have really missed
out on what's interesting,

Because I'll tell you what's interesting.

What's interesting is my past,

Is what's interesting.

And that's what you should
be interested in, Grace.

[Grace] Um, okay.

Yes.

[Grace] I am interested.

And you should be
interested in the future, too,

Not just the past, because I'll tell you,

Something's going to happen in the future.

[John] We hope great things for you.

Great things are going to happen.

You just wait and see.

Wait and see.

[Grace] Hold on, Lisa...

Wait and see.

[John] I think we should stop sh**ting.

I don't think this is worth it.

We just have a couple more interviews.

[John] Aren't you freaked out?

Aren't you disturbed?

I think we should stop.

You know what?

I knew you would do this.

[John] Grace, this is not about a movie.

This is about our safety.

This is about your safety.

I can take care of myself.

I'm not gonna let
you go out there alone.

[Singing]

[Crickets]

How long do you think
we have to sit here?

I don't know.

I have no idea.

I don't know what this guy's deal is.

[Grace] What are you
thinking about, John?

I'm thinking that I'm sorry

For getting you guys into this sh*t.

[Grace] Why are you sorry?

We did this together.

I know, I'm just...

You know, this is not a
safe situation, I think,

And I'm just sorry that
I got you guys into it.

Okay?

[John] Let's go, let's go

Hey!

[Grace] Hey, Joel!

[John] Stop!

Oh, hey guys.

I'm a little busy right now.

[Grace] We know what you did.

We know what you're doing.

We have proof.

Proof of what?

[Grace] You turned
that girl into a zombie.

You lied to us.

[Joel] Do you recognize this?

Realize internal life?

What is this?

This is f*cking ridiculous.

[John] Huh?

I open up my life to you guys

And this is how you treat me?

This is how you thank me?

[Grace] Yeah.

You know what, f*ck you.

f*ck you and your documentary.

Stick it up your a*s.

[John] Joel, we know what you're doing.

[Grace] What happened at Live Dead?

[Joel] We are calling the police.

You are not going to get away with this.

[Grace] What happened to Maude?

What did you do with her?

[John] Whoa, whoa, whoa.

I thought you people were different.

Especially you, Grace.

But you know what?

The day's gonna come.

We're gonna rise and we're gonna take over

And then you guys are gonna be f*cked.

[Andrew] f*ck you.

I just, I really wanted to apoligize

For my outburst the other day.

I absolutely did not want to frighten you,

It's just I get so overwhelmed

By this world sometimes.

[Grace] Well, that's okay.

Notice anything different?

It's quiet, right?

[Screaming]

[Woman] Somebody call 911!

Oh my God!

[John] Get back, get back.

Grace, get back, get back.

Matthias...

[Grace] Oh, God.

[John] You guys, you
guys, get back here.

[Grace] Andrew, please come back here.

[John] Hey, get away from her.

Get away from her.

No, no!

I did them a favor!

Really, really!

I smashed their heads
into little teeny pieces.

Now they'll never have to be zombies ever!

[Sirens]

I don't want a sympathetic jury.

Please.

Please make sure that they
give me the death penalty.

Please?

You f*cking crazy woman.

She k*lled...

Shut up, b*tch!

I'm not crazy.

I'm not crazy.

Please, Grace.

Please, you know...

Ma'am, excuse me.

I knew what I was doing.

Just come with us, ma'am.

Just tell them that they
can't lock me up forever.

Go with Officer Jones.

Go with the officer.

[Lisa] Please!

Turn that thing off!

[Lisa] They have to k*ll me!

Explain to them!

Grace!

Please, Grace!

I quit my job at Healthful Bounty.

I'm just trying to figure
out where to go from here.

I've just been, you
know, limiting my choices

All this time.

I've been hanging out
with a lot of zombies

And it's just nice.

It's just nice to be part
of a group, you know?

Be part of a community?

It's not done yet,

But here's a couple pages from Live Dead.

[Grace] Seems like you had
a really good time up there.

My life has changed.

I just feel like I can
change someone else's life.

I feel like I can make a difference.

[Grace] So I think
that's it for us, Judy.

Oh.

Oh, that's it?

[Grace] We got everything we needed.

Okay!

[Grace] Thanks a lot.

Thank you.

[Grace] Yeah.

Nice meeting you

Thank you guys, thanks a lot.

Thank you, John, especially you.

[Screaming]

[John] Get her off!

Get her off me!

Get her off of me!

[Thud]

Oh, f*ck!

[g*nshots]

[Groaning]

Oh my God!

Oh my God!

[Grace] Andrew, we have
to get him to a hospital.

Come on!

[Andrew] I don't know.

I don't think that's a good idea.

Just get your sh*t together and help me!

I'm sorry, you guys!

I'm sorry!

[Groaning]

[Grace] Oh sh*t.

[Andrew] Where am I going?

I don't know, just keep driving.

We have to get him to a hospital.

[Andrew] Yeah, okay, but where?

[Groaning]

What's going on back there?

[Grace] John?

sh*t!

[Grace] Are you okay?

John?

sh*t!

Oh sh*t, he's turning into one of them!

[Grace] No, he's not.

He's okay.

[Andrew] I'm gonna pull over, okay?

And you're gonna take care of this.

We have to get him to the hospital!

[Andrew] Grace.

Grace, you have to k*ll him.

Grace?

[Grace] Turn the camera off!

[Matthias] Grace, you have to do it.

We have to k*ll him.

John does not want to live like this.

[Grace] I can't...

[Matthias] He doesn't
want to live like this.

[Andrew] Do it!

I mean, you have to do it.

[Moaning]

[Grace] I can't.

I can't.

[Matthias] So now what do we do?

[Andrew] You're gonna
have to live with this.

You hear me, Grace?

You can finish this yourself.

[Turn signal clicks]

[Light rock music]
