We already have our question.
What materials are good at soundproofing?

Next, we should research sound
to find out what could make it quieter.

Let's see.

My notes say sound is made of
vibrations that travel through the air.

That's called sound waves.

I'd surf music sound waves any day.

Well, surf over here,
'cause I've got a hypothesis.

If we find a material
that stops the vibrations,

-it'll stop the sound.
-Rockin' hypothesis, Benny B.

Let's grab some materials to test.

[upbeat music playing]

Got it, denim.

It stops me from being cold,
so maybe it'll stop sound.

My bet's on bubble wrap.

It stops things from breaking,
so it might stop noises too.

In Comet Quest, tinfoil blocks aliens
from reading your mind,

so maybe it'll block sound waves.

And I've got goo,
'cause it's super sticky,

so, hopefully the sound will stick to it.
Come on, let's test.

[liquid explodes]

-[sighs]
-Nope!

Hmm…

We've tried so many materials,

but none of them were
good at soundproofing.

Maybe there's more info
in here about soundproofing.

Yep, soundproofing materials work
by trapping or soaking up sound energy.

-Like how sponges soak up liquid?
-Thumbs up emoji. That means yeah.

Hmm. Wait! What if sponges
can also soak up sound?

Yeah, that might work.
If the sponges soak up the sound waves,

the noise wouldn't bounce
all over the room, so it'd be quieter.

Sounds like we've got a new hypnosis.

I mean, hy-po-the-sis.

-[laughing]

[normally] Soundproofing for the win!

-We did it!
-We've got our conclusion.

Sponges are good
at making sounds sound less loud.

That means we can use them
to soundproof the garage.

Uh, first, we're gonna need approximately
a lot more sponges.

[upbeat music playing]

-Wait. We didn't do it.

-I can still hear the music.
-Five more minutes, Ada.

But if the music's still this loud,

-we'll tell them practice is over.
-I don't get it.

The sponges worked
in our lab tests, so why not now?

Hmm. Architects leave gaps
in buildings to let air out.

-So maybe the sound is leaking out.
-[Benny] You're right.

The sponges helped soak up
some of the sound waves,

but lots are still getting out.

We can't fix that many holes, though.
Most are too hard to reach.

Ugh! If only we could make
a fortress so sturdy and tough

-that no sound could escape.
-That's it!

What if we build the band
their very own practice booth,

like the one we used for tests?

And if we make the walls super thick,

-it could help trap the sound waves.
-I love it.

Let's make a special
practice space for Dad to the Bone.

That means a little more time to play.

Thanks, Mom, you rock! Bye!

[laughing]

[upbeat music playing]

-Wow!
-Whoa, Nelly! What is this?

It's a soundproofed practice space.

The sponges soak up sound energy,
and the thick walls trap it inside.

and no one'll hear you.

Apparently some people think
your band practice is "too loud." Ugh!
