for you fiction fans.

My bookstore is hosting
its first ever Kid Storyteller contest.

If you wanna participate,
you've got 24 hours to write a story.

Tomorrow, you'll read it in front of
our special judge, Alex Acarelli,

and she'll pick the winner.

-[Ada] What?

She's one of my favorite writers!
I've read all of her books.

[gasps] We're gonna read
our stories for her tomorrow.

We've gotta make them amazing! Come on!

-[Amari] Whoa!
-[kids cheering]

Just one tiny problem.
I don't know what to write yet.

-Yeah, me neither.

Hm. Looks like we need
to write up ideas in a brainstorm.

I've got a story idea.

It's an epic tale
about a brave rock monster

who goes on a quest
to rescue the prince from the evil queen.

-That's exciting!
-It sounds kinda scary.

I think I'll write something
with a little less danger.

The Statue of Liberty is
lonely on her island,

so she goes on a trip around the world

to visit other landmarks,

and they become best friends, like us.

-[Ada] Aw, clever!
-I love it!

And I've got an out-of-this-world
story idea for a comic book.

It's about a UFO that crashes to Earth,

and aliens ask four kids
to help fix their ship.

I'd love to see what's
under the hood of an alien spaceship!

Me too! And I'm gonna write…

Well… I guess I don't
have any ideas right now.

Maybe you could write about
a horse who thinks she's a unicorn.

Or a young architect who designs
the neatest skyscraper ever.

Or a robo-puppy who fights
evil smog monsters all over the planet.

I don't know.
None of those ideas feel like me.

But that's okay.

Scientists don't always know the answer
when they start working on a problem,

so I'm sure I'll figure my story out.

Come on. Let's write.

[all] Yeah!

-[meows]
-[laughs]

-[grunts]

That was phenomenal.

-And finito!
-[Rosie] Yeah!

-[Ada] Terrible.

I can't think of any good ideas.

-[sighs]

I'm a great scientist,
but not a good writer.

I wish something science-y

could help me
come up with the perfect story.

Like a computer program?

Yes! Do you think I could
make one to write my story?

Only one way to find out.

Computer scientists have
programmed AI to write stories.

So, maybe you can too.

AI? You mean artificial intelligence.
Isn't that what DadBot has?

Yep. That's how machines think and learn.

And now, I'm gonna make
an AI to write the best story ever.

Okay, for science. And for you, Ada.

First things first,
we need to build our storytelling bot.

[upbeat music playing]

-[shrieks]
-[laughs]

-Boom!
-It's adorable!

-It doesn't look evil.
-It's perfect!

I'll call it Book Bot.

Okay, Book Bot, it's storytime.

Oops. Kind of forgot
I have to program the AI first.

Yeah. If we want Book Bot
to be a great writer,

we need to give it some rhythm.
An algorithm, that is.

Ooh! I remember algorithms.

They're sets of instructions
that tells you how to do something.

Ding-ding-ding, Iggy.

We need to give Book Bot instructions
about what makes a good story.

Well, I think a good story should
have problems that need solving.

So, I'll add that to the algorithm.

-And the best stories have lots of action.
-In beautiful settings.

And totally evil villains.

-[laughs evil laugh]
-[shrieks]

-Sorry, got a little carried away there.
-[laughs]

There! Our algorithm is
ready to rock and write.

-Now what?
-Now, we let it learn on its own.

But I don't know how we do that.

Mmm. Let's see.

How can we teach Book Bot
to learn about stories?

[gasps] I have an idea. Come on!

[meows]

I've learned approximately…

a lot from reading, and so will Book Bot.

Now that Book Bot knows
what makes a good story,

it's ready to write its own.

Yay! Get ready to hear
the best story ever.

-Let's go!
-Yeah!

"The little Dust Bunny tumbled
into quicksand."

"Then, the earth burped
and launched her into a clown"?

-[all laugh]

That's so silly.

Yeah, that doesn't make any sense.

Maybe Book Bot just needed to warm up.

Yeah!

Let's try again.

"A goblin goofy waterslide
upside down the slobber of pumpkins"?

Huh? That doesn't make sense either.

Okay, I'll make some changes
to Book Bot's algorithm and try again.

"The cha-cha turtle flew
to the rainbow school bus beach"?

Aw, test tubes! This is gibberish.
Gotta try again.

"A fuzzy-wuzzy dinosaur eats
the wibbly-wobbly cloud for class." Ugh!

Okay, I'll try one more time.

No!

This one isn't even a story.

It's just a bunch of words
that rhyme with "stinky boot." Ugh…

This isn't working.

Kids, it's time for dinner.

I've gotta face it.

I won't have a good enough story
to read for Alex Acarelli tomorrow.

[sighs deeply]

♪ I can't do it, gonna quit ♪

♪ Can't get through it, hit a wall
It's impossible ♪

♪ When all I see are obstacles
Afraid I'm gonna fail and so I quit ♪

My brain and my Book Bot both failed,

and now I don't
have a story for the contest.

[sighs] Maybe I'm not a good writer
like you or Alex Acarelli.

Hey, now, you don't need fancy AI
to come up with great stories.

They come from your imagination
and you've got a great one of those.

-[Benny] Yeah.
-True.

Dad's right. You always come up
with imaginative questions.

And your brainstorms are super creative.
Weird, but creative.

Your brain blows my mind.

when I'm doing science.

Maybe I just need to
loosen up and have fun writing

like I do with my experiments.

to get silly with it. Dad never is.

It doesn't have to be perfect.

maybe that's how you'll find inspiration.

These stories don't any sense,

but maybe I can use
some of Book Bot's silly ideas

to inspire me.

My AI couldn't write the perfect story,

but it can spark my creativity.

It's combining science and art.

Let's see, a dinosaur,
a rainbow school bus, a stinky boot.

[squeals] I think I have
some good ideas now!

"And after their long journey,
the ladybug and the dinosaur

returned the stinky boot to the pirate,

then rode home on the rainbow school bus
and became heroes of the lab."

Okay, writers, you all did
such a great job with your stories,
