[ music ]

Hey, I'll take
some of that.

Hey, what are you doing?

Take it easy,

I'm doing you a favor.

I'll have to get some
from the spring.

Well, I hope you fall in.

I just might do that.

[ music ]

Hap?

Hap, where are you?

[ music ]

[ music ]

[ music ]

[ music ]

[ g*n shot ]

[ music ]

Slim.

[ music ]

Slim.

[ music ]

Slim.

Uhh.

Just try to rest easy,
if you can.

Did you see who did it?

Hid--hid out in the wagon.

He was riding a pinto.

Yeah, I caught
a glimpse of him.

I'd go after him, but I got
to get you back to town.

Found Hap, in the water.

I don't guess Hap would
mind if we use his wagon.

It's gonna be rough going
though, and not much help.

Slim.

[ music ]

This is one ride
you'd be better off

not knowing about,
partner.

I reckon there's
nothing to do

but tote him off
to the undertakers.

Some of you fellas
might do that.

How about Slim?

He's gonna be all right.

Doc will tell him
where we're going.

I can't go nowhere.

Look, Wylie,
Hap Matthews is dead

and the Slim's been shot.

Just what does it take
to get you saddled up?

Sheriff told me
to stay in town

while he took that rest
over Buford.

He said he'd be back
in a couple of days.

Yeah, well the k*ller
ain't gonna wait,
and neither am I.

Jess.

You know if Hap
had any kin?

None that I know of.

I don't know who to notify.

There's a picture
in his wallet of Hap

and a little girl.

I'm sorry,
I can't help you.

Sure hard to figure.

Plenty of money in here,
and the cash box, too.

Nothing gone
from the wagon,

as far as we can tell.

Why did anybody do
such a thing, Jess,

if not to rob?

I don't know.

There's only one way
to find out.

[ music ]

What do you want with
that horse, mister?

Why? He belong to you?

Well, no,
but he may as well,

the way I look after him.

You see, I run
the livery stable.

Well then, you know
who owns him.

I sure do.

Well it's kind of important
for me to find out who.

You got business with him?

Mister, that's
putting it mild.

I'm gonna tell you
one thing--it's awful hard

to do business with him.

Look, if you don't tell me,
the local law will.

The law?

You're gonna call
the law in Rimrock

for Grant McClintock?

Is that his name,
McClintock?

Well, I reckon the law
would be interested

in anything you
got on him.

Do you know if he's been
in town all day?

He just got back from
visiting his brother.

Told me to take care
of his horse.

Well, thank you.

That ought to be enough
there to take care

of the feed
for my month.

Just tie it up over
at the marshal's office.

[ indistinct chatter ]

You looking or drinking?

Well, both, if it don't
cost too much.

Whisky.

Well, Rimrock's no place to be

when you're low on money.

I don't plan on staying
too long, if I can help it.

[ glass clanks ]

Which one's McClintock?

Well, he's here, ain't he?

He's the one in the jacket
over at that table.

[ indistinct chatter ]

[ coin clatters ]

HOLLY: How about another drink?

Well, I'd be pleased to
spend more time with you, miss.

The name's Holly.

Miss Holly.

But I got to see a man
about a horse.

[ indistinct chatter ]

Your name McClintock?

That's right.

That's your pinto outside?

Yup, but he's
not for sale.

Well, I ain't interested
in buying.

What are you doing,
cowpoke,

besides making a nuisance
out of yourself?

I want to know where
that horse was today

and who was riding him.

Who are you, mister,
and what's your business?

Jess Harper's the name.

I'm from Laramie.

A partner of mine
got himself shot today,

and a peddler named
Hap Matthews

got himself k*lled.

Old Hap got himself k*lled?

Yeah.

I saw the k*ller
ride off on a pinto horse

just like the one
tied up outside.

That's why I'm interested
in your horse, McClintock.

What are you trying to say?

Now, hold it, Rink.

Let's hear all the facts.

Where did all
of this happen?

The road, just
outside of Laramie.

My partner and I were
putting up some fence posts.

He went down the creek
to get some water.

Next thing I knew,
I heard a shot.

I got down there
and I saw the k*ller

riding off on a horse
I won't soon forget.

If he was so all-fired close,
why didn't you stop him?

Because he'd shot
my partner,

had to get him to a doc.

You trailed the k*ller
all the way to Rimrock?

No, just the river
south of town.

Took to the water.

It was too near
dark to pick up a trail,

so I came here for some help

and that's when I spotted
your horse.

You ever stop to figure

how many pintos there are

in Wyoming territory?

Not many marked
just like yours.

You got a real
good look at him.

Good enough to want
to know where your horse
was today, mister.

Hold it.

I got nothing to hide.

I was visiting my brother.

He's a sick man.

All right. If you got
nothing to hide,

you won't mind me having
a talk with your brother.

Yes, I would mind, Harper.

I told you, he's sick.

He's not interested
in talking

to every trail dr*fter
who comes along,

so maybe you'd
just better ease off.

Where does he live,
McClintock?

[ music ]

You're kind of stubborn,
aren't you?

Now, about that horse.

I've been real patient
with you.

You've as much has called me
a liar and a k*ller.

I'm looking for the man
who gunned down my partner.

Now, if I don't get
any answers from you,

I'll get them from
the local law.

Try that.

I wouldn't try anything

with a hot-headed
g*n slick like you.

I was just getting
the local law for you.

[ music ]

Now, let me get
this straight.

You're the marshal
of Rimrock?

That's right.

And that man you just
beat up, he's my deputy.

He's got a badge
under his vest.

Now, you don't seem
proud of your jobs,

hiding your tin stars.

Honest folks in town know us.

Only strangers
come looking for trouble

have ever complained.

Now, do you figure
you're in far enough,

or do you want to dig
that hole you're in

a little deeper?

I still want to know
about that horse.

MCCLINTOCK: He's mine, Harper,
that's all you got to know.

And now, I'm gonna
give you a choice.

Either you get out of this
town and don't come back,

or get locked up.

My deputy would like that.

Rink'd really enjoy having
you in jail for a spell.

What about the k*ller?

I'll watch for him.

We don't cotton
to his kind,

or yours much, either,
here in Rimrock.

When I look up again,
I expect to see you gone.

[ music ]

Don't do it.

Go on out.
I got to talk to you.

I'm not finished.

Well, you will be, if you
don't get out of here.

[ music ]

I know some things
about Hap Matthews.

But this ain't
the time or place.

So come to my room
after the saloon closes.

I want to know now.

Look, I can't.
It's too risky.

What's your stake
in this?

Hap Matthews was my pa.

Well, nobody
in Rimrock knows it,

so leave it that way.

My room's number ten
in the hotel.

Come around the back way
so as no one will see you.

Uh, you better get,

like the marshal said.

What are you doing
with him, Holly?

Oh...he didn't ante
up for a drink,

but I collected.

Go back inside.

You take a long time going,
mister.

Don't make me hurry along.

[ music ]

[ dog barking ]

[ music ]

HOLLY: Please. No,
please, don't!

No.

[ screams ]

[ music ]

JESS: Holly.

[ music ]

Holly? Holly!

RINK: What's going on here?

[ music ]

Hey, what happened to her?

Get the doc, quick.

Did he do this?Yeah,

I found him just backing out.
Get the doc.

Looks like you hit him
pretty hard.

Once we get him in jail,
he's all yours.

Take this along,
it's his.

Yeah, sure.

I knew that Jess
was something.

I just hope he lives long enough
so as I can pay him in kind.

Yeah, come on, hurry it up.
I want that doc here, quick.

Time you come out of it.

You've got an important
visitor coming.

[ door closes ]

Hey, what are you pulling?

Open up.

You ain't going nowhere.

[ groans ]

Who hit me?

Marshal.

Of course, me dragging
you over here

from Holly's room
didn't help much.

Yeah. Holly, what about her?

She'll be all right,
no thanks to you.

Me?

Well, you about choked her
to death.

I did?

Mister, you've got it
all wrong.

I was standing outside her door
and I heard her

fighting with somebody.

Had to bust in.

Time I got in there, whoever it
was had gone out the window.

Yeah, sure.

Grant figured you would say
something like that.

That's the way it was.

Well, we'll know
for sure pretty quick.

The marshal's bringing Holly
over to identify you.

That's fine.
She'll tell you.

How'd that marshal of yours
there so quick?

Not as fast as you.

How come you was
there, Harper?

I was gonna stay at the hotel.

Uh-huh, sure.

And you just forget to sign
the register, that it?

Ain't no use you making up
no excuses, Harper.

You just landed
on the wrong trail.

Now, you ain't willing
to get off peaceful-like,

we'll have to shove you.

Yeah, well,
the sheriff from Laramie'll

be looking for me soon.Let him look.

Long as you're
in Rimrock jail

for attacking one
of our citizens,

the law back in Laramie, Denver,

or even in Washington ain't
gonna do you any good.

Now, Holly, you take
a good look at this man.

This is important.

I made out a complaint on him
for attacking you last night.

You identify him, sign it...

and leave the rest of it
up to us.

Now, you've got to answer.

Is this the man?

Yes, it is.I told you.

She's lying,
and you both know it.

Come on. I'll take
you back now.

Funny how things work out,
ain't it, Harper?

You won't think it's funny
when I get out of here.

Yeah, when that time comes,

you won't feel much like
stirring up things no more.

We got busy work for them
that stays in Rimrock Jail.

Start you tomorrow.

You can't put a man
on hard labor until he's
had a trial.

Don't you worry none
about a trial.

The kind of evidence
we got on you,

you'll be looking out through
the bars for a long time.

[ music ]

How are things going?

Well, the prisoner
don't take to the work
we've given him, Marshal.

Oh?

He shouldn't complain.

That firewood will keep
the lockup nice and warm,
come winter.

Don't count on me being
around that long.

Why don't you try to leave?

You'd like it, wouldn't you?

So you could sh**t me in the
back while I'm trying to escape.

sh**ting you in the guts
would suit me fine.

You brought this
on yourself, Harper.

You got any complaints?

Yeah, how about some water?

That hard-nosed deputy of yours
says I can't have any.

I'm surprised at you, Rink.

That ain't hardly human. But you said...

I said you were to give him
a chance for a drink of water.

What are you waiting for?

[ g*nsh*t ]

Now, you give him a chance for
water anytime he likes it, Rink.

Be my pleasure, Grant.

Back to work, tough boy.

Real big man with a g*n,
McClintock.

He ain't gonna tame easy
like some of them others.

He'll come around.

Thought you had manacles
on him?

Did, couldn't do
any work with them on.

I'll lock him up before I bring
him in this evening.

Make it after dark.

I wanna be sure they're not
coming after him from Laramie.

Think he'll ever own up
to beating up Holly?

After we get through with him,

it'll be the easy way out.

[ music ]

Sure appreciate the
information, Marshal.

We think an awful lot
of Jess Harper down Laramie.

I wish I could've told you more.

Well, just as long as
we know he's all right.

Not much more we can do.

I was lucky to trail him
this far.

If he sends back word,
we'll sure let you know.

WYLIE: Good enough.

Ever in Laramie, come see me.

MCCLINTOCK: Sure thing.All right, Wylie.

Let's get started back.

Wylie, we're riding.

Yeah, sure, sure.

Just admiring
the local scenery.

What are you doing
out here?

I...I needed some air.

No law against that, is there?

Besides, the lock on my door
is still broken.

I'll have Tim fix it.

Meantime, you just stay
in your room like I told you.

I saw you eying that deputy.

You say that about me and every
man that comes to town.

Now, you get to your room
and stay there.

[ music ]

[ door closes ]

RINK: Where you been?

Been looking all over town
for you...finally gave up.

I was in my room.

In your room?

Then why didn't you answer
the door when I pounded on it?

Oh, not again,

I supposed you was locked up
with a bottle.

I got to get away
for a day or so.

Oh, don't worry about Harper.

RINK:
He's so bushed, he's been
sleeping like the dead.

You think you--you think
you'll never get him

to own up to
attacking Holly?

He didn't do it, Rink.

He what?

RINK: Now, don't tell me
brother Charlie

had a hand on this.Yeah.

And k*lling Hap Matthews too,
I suppose?

Oh, that's just great.

I thought you had them things
under control!

Well, what are we gonna do
about Harper now?

MCCLINTOCK: You're gonna have to
make it look like...

l-like it was an accident.

Like he was trying to escape out
in the woods.

RINK:
What about the Laramie law?

What if they come poking
around?

Sheriff was here today.

I told him--I-I told him
Harper'd ridden right on
through Rimrock.

We're clear now.

Uh-huh.

That still leaves Holly.

You keep away from her.

She's my concern.

Yeah. So's brother Charlie,

and you ain't handling that
so good.

Holly won't give us any trouble.
She's too scared.

You leave her alone.

You hear me?

You'd better get out of town

before you mess things up
for good.

I'll be all right...

in a day or so.

Can you handle Harper?

RINK: Sure.

Like I should've
in the first place.

I better get going.
It's near sun up.

[ music ]

Now, you know where I am
if you need me.

Roll out, bright eyes.

It's not even daylight yet.

Yeah, I thought we'd get
an early start...

just the two of us.

You got a big day
ahead of you.

[ music ]

[ thud ]

Just keep at it, Harper.

I'll give you a good,
long rest directly.

[ music ]

[ grunts ]

[ music ]

That ought to do it, Holly.

Now you'll feel safe
and sound again.

Thanks, Tim.
It's been worrying me.

Well, I don't blame you,
after what happened.

Hey, look. You ought
to get out in the sun.

You look as pale as paper.

The marshal thought
I better stay inside.

Get a little rest.

Well, the marshal won't know
if you take a little walk.

He's going up to visit
his brother again.

Are you sure?Sure, I'm sure.

I saddled his mount
this morning before dawn.

Where's Rink?

Well, Rink is out with
that Harper fellow

for some more
wood-chopping.

Now, you on get yourself
ready and go on out.

It'll do you good.

Tim, Tim,
has the stage come yet?

Well, it won't be in
for another hour.

I'm just going over to get a
fresh tin ready for him.

Why?I was just wondering.

Maybe I will see you
in a little bit.

Thanks.I'll be looking for you.

Bye.

[ music ]

[ footsteps ]

[ grunts ]

I'm ready to listen, if you're
ready to talk, Holly.

Nice and quiet.

H-how'd you get in here?

You got a bad habit of leaving
your windows open,

just like you did the night
McClintock caught me.

I didn't want to say
you did it,

but he was gonna beat me again
if I didn't sign the complaint.

You mean he's
hit you before?

Isn't the first time.

Look, he's crazy jealous.

It's like he's out
of his head sometimes.

I don't know
what to do.

Is that why you're trying
to leave town?

Yes.

With Grant and Rink gone, it...
where's Rink?

Don't worry about him.
He won't bother us for a while.

I got his wagon tied up outside.

Now, what were you gonna tell me
the other night?

Oh, I can't.
Not now.

You wanted to
tell me then.

The marshal know
Hap was your pa?

Nobody knows but you,
and it better stay that way.

Holly, he was your pa.
You owe him something.

I owe him nothing.

He never cared about me.

Boarded me out
with folks so mean

and strict,
I couldn't stand it.

I ran away
and I came out here.

And he followed you.

By the time he did,
it was too late

to do anything about it.

I wasn't using his name
so we left it that way.

Well, there's a deputy
in Laramie

that's got your
pa's money case.

It carried a picture
of you in it.

So he did care, Holly.

Any father would.

He had...my picture?

Yeah, when you were
still in pigtails.

Now do you wanna tell me?

He said he'd never forgive me
for living the way I do,

working in a saloon.

But he used to come see me
when he was in town.

He told me something once.

JESS: What?

I didn't think anything
of it then, but...

he said if anything
ever happened to him,

I was to look
for Grant's brother.

Is that what you wanted
to tell me?

That's all I need to know.

Let's go.Go where?

I want you to show me
where Grant's brother lives.

It must have been him riding
that pinto

and the marshal's covering up
for him.

Look, Grant's already out there.

That's fine. I got something
I wanna ask him, too.

No, I can't.

You heard your pa was dead,
you wanted to do something.

Know, running away ain't gonna
do you any good, Holly.

McClintock would only
follow you.

Him and Rink got this town
tied up so tight,

somebody's got to do
something about it.

All right.

I guess I might as well get it
over with now,

as to never know
when he'll show up.

Look, you will have to face
them...because I couldn't.

I'll do more than face him.

You just take me to him.

[ music ]

[ dog barking ]

How much further?

Oh, about a half hour.

Probably be dark
by the time we get there.

Well, from what I hear
about McClintock's brother,

it might be easier
to face him in the dark

than in the daylight.

Come, on. Get up.

Put some vinegar into it,
will you, Tim?

It won't be easy chasing
Harper after dark.

I'm doing the best
I can, Rink.

Say, did you say Holly
was with him?

She sure was.

As long as they stay
in that buckboard,

I'll know just where they went.

Now, come on, hurry it up.

[ music ]

[ thud ]

[ footsteps ]

[ thud ]

I've seen cleaner places
in a pig wallow.

Well, this can't be
Grant's room.

I--he sometimes wears gloves

just so as he won't
get his hands dirty.

[ crash ]

[ sighs ]

What is it?

Some kind of patent medicine.

He said his brother was sick.

If he drank everything
that's in these bottles,

he's bound to be sick.

Sure likes his whiskey, too.

I'd swear this was
Hap's writing.

It was sent through the mail,
addressed to Grant.

Is McClintock
a snuff user?

Not that I knew about.

Do you know what it is?No.

I thought I did,
but I guess I don't.

[ glass shatters ]

Oh...

[ laughter ]

Where'd that come from? It's hard to tell.

Come on.

MAN:
[ shouting indistinctly ]
... up here!

[ laughs ]

Well [ indistinct ]
go ahead and man up.

[ crash ]

[ laughter ]

[ glass shatters ]

[ bottles dropping ]

I didn't know McClintock
was a heavy drinker.

He's not...in town.

He told me once that he comes
out here to see his brother

and ease the pain
when it gets too bad.

The pain?Yeah.

Both he and his brother
were hurt during the w*r.

One of them burnt...Grant
with canister shots
still in him.

McClintock.

McClintock.

Not this time, Marshal.

How'd you get out here?

Rink got a little careless.

You shouldn't have come
here, Holly.

Hap Matthews was
my father, Grant.

I think you know who k*lled him.

We want to have a talk
with that brother of yours.

Is he around?

No.

No. He's gone.

HOLLY: That won't work, Grant,

because we heard him yelling
just a little while ago

from upstairs.

You might as well
admit it, McClintock.

Your brother k*lled
Hap Matthews and shot
my partner.

And he was riding your horse,
wasn't he?

Took my horse
before I could stop him.

Why didn't you do
something about it?

He doesn't know what he's doing.

I couldn't put him away.

Not my own brother.

That's--that's why I set him
up out here.

When did he get started
on narcotics?

During the w*r?

Yeah.

Doctors gave him the narcotics

for his wounds.

How did you know about that?

Couple of things.

All these patent
medicine bottles.

Put narcotics
in that stuff.

People drink it.
They don't know why
it's habit forming.

That's what in that package your
pa sent to McClintock, Holly.

I remember the smell from
a hospital during the w*r.

You mean...Hap was selling it?

It's about right,
ain't it, Marshal?

And Hap tried up the price
and your brother

followed him and k*lled him.

I told you,
he doesn't know what he's doing.

On your feet, McClintock.

Now!

I'm gonna take
a little look around.

No.

He must have hit his head.

If he comes to, or anything...

Where are you going?

Brother's bound to be
around some place.

I'm going to see
if I can find him.

Jess...Now, don't worry.

I'll be close by.

[ music ]

[ gasps ]

[ music ]

[ g*nshots ]

[ g*nshots ]

[ metal clanging ]

Is he dead?

No, but he's on his way.

I wouldn't look, Holly,

What I hear, it
ain't a pretty sight.

I guess I've been through
too much to care, Jess.

It's Grant I'm worried
about now.

HOLLY: Grant?

Yeah.But...

but why?

Why should he go
to all this trouble?

A man's addicted
to narcotics,

he usually tries
to live two lives.

In this case,
he had to go one step further.

Especially if he want to go
on being marshal.

I still don't understand.

He's coming around.

JESS: McClintock,
what about your brother?

Your brother!

He's a brave man.

k*lled no more.

That hero.

I was the one that Doc started
on the narcotics.

I tried to stop.

I couldn't.

You wanted folks to go on
believing that

your brother lived down here,

so you could come out anytime
you felt a need for it.

Right now, nobody else...

except Hap.

MCCLINTOCK: When he found out I
was hooked on the stuff,

he tried to...

up the price.

It was either k*ll him

or...die and...then...

[ exhales ]

[ music ]

JESS:
I sure hope things are going
to be better now for Holly

and the rest of the folks
in Rimrock.

Maybe it will.

I know it's going to be
a while before I forget

all the trouble I found there.

Day like this, though.

A man's riding easy

and feeling the sun
on his face.

It's hard to think about much
else except how good it is

to be getting home.

[ music ]
