02x29 - Trigger Point

Post by bunniefuu »

What do ya make of it?

Stack's gotten
rid of 'em all.

The money's his now.

Wait. He might be
in better shape than you.

That won't take
much doin'.

I'll stay outta range,
get his attention.

You surprise him.

All right, Scotty.

You two stay here.

[driver] Whoa.

We're gonna
water the horses.

Step out and stretch
your legs if you want.

If my sample case
is as shook up as I am,

there won't be
an unbroken bottle left in it.

A little shakin' up
might age that stuff you sell

so's a man can
enjoy drinkin' it.

Once a year, I make it
to Green River,

and I gotta pick a time
when the new road is closed.

Do you mind?

Why is everyone so rude,
so absolutely uncivilized?

A miserable ride
in a miserable coach.

I'm sorry, ma'am,
but there's nothing
we can do about it.

Regular road's blocked
by landslides.

That's why we're detoured
on this old one.

Well, this road will make
us even later.

Maybe so,
but it beats walking.

My husband
is a cavalry officer

at the Green River
garrison,

and he'll hear about this.

- Yes, ma'am.
I reckon he will.
- Sure, he will.

She'll whisper in his ear
all about her miserable ride.

Well!

The ride isn't as bad
as she makes it out.

In fact, it's got
its good points.

Well, I'm glad
everybody isn't mad at us.

Scotty and I
are doin' the best we can.

Oh, I rode with
Scotty before.

Now if he was
introducin' us,

why, he'd call me Lottie.

Jess Harper, ma'am.

You get to Green River
regular?

No, not very often.

Oh, that's too bad.

I'm gonna be workin' there.

[Scotty] Jess.

You better soak up some shade
while you can, Lottie.

Thanks, Jess.

They suspect anything?

The prissy one and Bender,
they're too mad to think
anything.

I guess Lottie's seen
rougher times than
this old road's givin' her.

Yeah, she's a nice gal
in her own way.

Never could get her
to favor me, though.

Takin' this old road
may throw off some hold-up men,

but this ain't no place
to be sittin' on top of
$30,000

in case they should
show up.

If the army wants
all that money in
the Green River bank,

why didn't they cart
it there themselves?

'Cause the garrison there
ain't that big.

Besides, look at
the commission's
the stage line's makin'.

It ain't boostin'
our salary none.

Just them vice-presidents
that get the gravy lick.

I sure hope word ain't
got around about what
we're carryin'.

Nobody's expectin' us
to take this old road
through the drylands.

so quit worryin',
will you, Scotty?

I've knowed you
too long, Jess.

You're as jumpy as
the back end of
a rattlesnake.

Well, I don't ride shotgun
on $30,000 every day either.

Better get them
some water, too.

Care for a sample?

No, thanks.
Scotty's bringin'
some water over.

I wondered if Mr. Bender
were in charge

of our liquid
refreshments.

Traveling on this, ma'am,
beats water any day.

Cushions the hard seat,
smooths the rough road,

and cuts time
in half.

It's the only way.

We'll be movin' out
in a few minutes.

That's the bucket
you watered the horses with.

You didn't expect them
to drink out of
the dipper, did you, ma'am?

Well, I never.

That little lady's
gonna be livin' in
Green River,

she's got a lot to learn...
the hard way.

Water, ma'am?

Thank you, Scotty.
Oops.

- We better load up.
- Yep.

You're workin'
too hard.

I'm sorry, ma'am.

Bad habit of mine.

Maybe when we get into town,
why, you can unwind a little.

I'm all for that.

Let's get there first.

Is anything wrong?

Not with you,
there isn't.

Giddyup, Mick.
Giddyup, Mick.

See anything?

See for yourself.

They're late.

Hope nothin' went wrong.

If it did,
you built yourself
a nice roadblock

for no reason.

That's what I don't
like about work.

Don't always pay off.

The work we did's
gonna pay off
right about now.

Hey, Link, Carr,
get up there.

Jojo, stay with me.

Whoa.

What's going on?

Oh, roadblock.

You thinkin' what
I'm thinkin', Scotty?

If somebody
wanted to stop us,
they sure did.

[man] Throw down
that g*n.

You heard him!

Looks like somebody
made sure

they was gonna
get that money.

- Over my dead body.
- Throw down that g*n,
hothead.

Won't have to be
over your dead body, Jess.

Do like the man says.
Put down that g*n.

Not you, too, Scotty.

I'm sorry about this.
Too good a chance for
me to miss.

Old man like me.
Throw that down.

You get off here.

[woman] What's
the meaning of this?

The meaning
is get outta
the coach, lady.

I will not.

You better do
as he says, ma'am.

Go ahead. This is
no time to argue.

We ain't fightin'
with you, mister.

Just take what you want
and leave us alone.

That's exactly what
we plan to do.

You got it, Scotty?

Right here.

Yeah.

How'd you
get to him?

We didn't.
He came to us.

Ain't I seen
you before, honey?

Ever been to
Albuquerque?

Not if you've been there.

Later, Jojo, later.

See what's in
back first.

I trusted you,
Scotty.

We all did.

You'd do the same, Jess,
if you was in my boots.

Hey, Carr, tie it
on my saddle.

We'll open it later.

Ooh, whee,
look at this.

Look at what
we got here.

We hit a liquid
gold mine.

Leave those alone.
Those are mine.

That's my business.

You sure are in
the right business.

Jojo, we ain't got
no time for that.

Who says?
What do you say, Carr?

We finish here,
what we do
is our business.

I'll go along
with that.

All right,
all right.

I guess there's
no harm in it.

No sense in ridin'
with empty saddle bags.

Hey, Scotty,
those horses,

get 'em ready
to travel.

You take those horses,
we'll never get out
of here alive.

Maybe.
That's your problem.

Now look here, Stack.

You said nobody'd
get hurt.

That was part of the deal.

Did I say that?

You sure did.

You leave 'em
stranded here,

I don't want
no part of that.

That's fine, Scotty.

I guess that
lets you out.

You ain't got much sense,
have you, boy?

All right, we were
just gonna take your horses.

But now,
we'll clean you out.

Hold on.
What do you mean?

Means your food,
your water,
everything you got.

I'm just beginning
to like you, Stack.

Take their hats,
their coats.

Put all that stuff
on the horses.

You can't leave
these women here.

That's worse
than m*rder.

Who's gonna
figure that out?

If they ever
find your bones,

they won't know
how it happened.

No. Please, no.

How about this one?

She won't give us
any trouble.

You wanna ride
with Jojo?

I'd rather be dead.

That's just what
you're gonna be.

Hey, Jojo, take
his coat and his hat.

About 50 miles from here
is folks that can help you.

Like I said,
that's your problem.

Nice meetin' up
with you.

And uh, Scotty,

thanks a lot.
[laughs]

I didn't know.

I just didn't know.

Well, now you know.

And thanks to you,
so do we.

I say k*ll him.
Now. Right here.

I didn't know
it'd be like this.

They told me nobody'd get hurt
once they got the money.

The important thing
is for us to stay
alive right now.

If for no other reason
than to see you get
what's comin' to ya.

He'll suffer right along
with the rest of us.

If we live,
his troubles will
just be startin'.

Was that outlaw right
about it being
so far to towns?

Yes, ma'am,
he was.

But we'll
never make it.

We'll never make it.

Hey, hey.

Hey.

Now we won't be
talkin' like that.

I'm sorry.

I'll be all right.

Sure, you will.

Where they
headed, Scotty?

I don't know.

We was all supposed
to go together after.

Well, they'll
steer clear of Laramie.

Green River, too,
for that matter.

Rawlins is closest.

Rawlins?
But that...

That's that way.

Across the worst
kind of country.

Well, you know what's
between here and Rawlins.

So do the outlaws.
If there's any waterholes,
they'll stick to 'em.

Are you saying
we follow them?

Well, has anybody
got a better idea?

But like this, with
nothing to protect us
from the sun?

And no food,
nothing to drink.

Ha!

I hid this
when they stopped us.

I'll take that.
That's all we got
to drink.

Besides, I could
use some for this.

Yeah.

Well, we need something
to cover us.

There's leather
in those seats,
and canvas.

That's good
thinkin', ma'am.

We can use that tarp
in back, too.

Anything that
comes loose.

Come with me,
Mr. Bender.

Jess.

Let me take care
of that for you.

Yeah.
Thanks, Lottie.

Hey. Wait up.

How's about puttin' up
these cayuses?

Well, take 'em up there
somewhere and get rid of 'em.

You're not gonna
turn 'em loose, are you?

They're worth something
to us.

What they gonna
live on, whiskey?

No, but we can.

The horses can have
my share of the water.

Me, too.

We got enough to last us
till we get to Rawlins.

Who wants water?

Yeah, maybe you're right.

We'll keep the horses.

I got no objection
to a little more money
in my pocket.

How come you ain't
drinkin', Stack?

We got somethin'
to celebrate.

I ain't thirsty yet.
I'll join you when I am.

Jojo, take one of
them teams.

Gotta rest.

All right,
just for a few minutes.

You better
sit down, Scotty.

You folks
go on and leave me.

You hear?

Don't make me come.

Hangin' for what I've done
is too good for me.

Too quick.

Let me suffer
or something.

Let me die of thirst.

I ain't worth it.

[stammering]
I ain't nothin'.

Look at 'em, Scotty.

We just started,
and look at 'em.

I figure
it's kinda unfair,

'cause they're gonna
suffer a whole lot more
than you,

whether we make it
out of this alive or not.

So just cut out
that kind of talk.

[Bender]
Yeah. Leave him here.

Him what
knows the country.

Just leave him here.

You know what?

I'll bet he knows
a way out.

We wouldn't be
leavin' him.

He'd be leavin' us.

No, sir.

I want to see
you hang.

Lucky thing for us
we tied the horses.

They'd be wantin'
to drink this stuff.

Sure glad we weren't
countin' on this waterhole.

I'll take the slow
poison in this.

Let me borrow
some of that, Jojo.

Hey.

Fool thing to do.

[laughter]

What's the matter, Link?

That ain't no place
to take a bath.

Shut up.
Give me a hand, will ya?

All right, you had
your little joke.

Now get me
outta here.

Come on now!

Stack!

Get me outta here
or I'll drill ya.

Stack! Please!

Stack!

[thunder crashing]

What is it?

Dust storm.

We better get
to them rocks quick.

Dear Lord.

[thunder crashes]

Come on.

You wanna choke to death?

Come on!

The horses.

The horses are gone.

Stack, there's only
two of 'em left. Look!

What are you
talkin' about?

What's the matter?

Jojo, you...

What's wrong?

The horses, Jojo.
That's what's wrong.

What happened to 'em?

You were supposed to
tie 'em up last night

while we made shelter
to keep outta the dust.

I did. I did
tie 'em up,
all of 'em.

How do you know,
drunk as you was?

- I did.
- Ah!

It's a good thing
I kept the strong box,

or you'd have
lost that, too, Jojo.

Them horses
gotta be around.

Maybe they just come loose.

Just come loose?

A horse don't just
come loose if it's
tied up right.

How far do you think
a horse can go in a dust storm?

He'd run scared
till he drop.

He'd choke,
he'd die, Jojo,

just like you
gonna die.

No, don't you try
nothin', Stack.

I tied up
them horses.

Look, there's
two of 'em.

The others can't be
far gone.

Yeah. I seen 'em, Jojo.

There's only two left.

And there's
three of us.

You got no call
to draw on me, Stack.

You got--

Here. What's the matter
with you?

Water.
It's water.

I know. I know there's
water out there.

[whimpering]

Let me see.

Come on, I only
wanna help.

Let me see.

Hey. Seen any tracks
this morning?

I don't know.

The wind took care
of most of 'em.

Could be we're
goin' in circles.

We better take
a look around.

Let them rest
for a while.

Lottie, we're goin'
up on that hill.

See where we are.
We'll be right back.

Why are you
doing this?

Well, when I was
a little kid,

I had a dog once.

Me and that dog,
we just never got along.

Guess he figured
he should've belonged

to a boy
instead of a girl.

Anyways, broke his leg
once and I fixed it.

Nursed him.

And he just looked at me.

Just like you're
lookin' at me.

After that, why,

we got along much better.

Not much, but...
better.

I'm sorry.

So sorry.

What for?

I don't blame you.

A real lady comin'
out here,

and gettin' into
all this.

At least you got
somethin' to hold onto.

What do you mean?

You got a man,
haven't you?

And you're gonna
meet him.

Well, that's more
than most.

Lottie,
where's Bender?

Well, he was just
here a moment ago.

He must've wandered off.

Didn't come up
our way.

Go on out that way.
Let's go.

There's water ahead.

That's what
he was sayin'.

Water.

A whole pool of it.

You can't drink that.

But I don't understand.

That's a seepage pool.

It'd k*ll you just like
it k*lled him.

It looks like there's
quicksand there, too.

At least Bender showed us
we're on the right trail.

That looks like
one of their hats.

Maybe one of 'em's
still under there.

I sure hope so.

If they'd have
drunk this water,

they'd still be here
like him.

Well, we can't leave him here
for the buzzards.

Take her over the ridge.

We'll be comin'.

You helped
k*ll him, Scotty.

I reckon you can
help bury him.

Quicksand'll do
most of it.

What's the matter?

Buzzards.

They've spotted
something.

Y'all stay here.

Scotty and I
will have a look.

We're on the right
trail, Scotty.

Yeah, I reckon.

Let's go back, Scotty.

Scotty!

I wonder
what's keepin' 'em.

[g*nsh*t]

I ain't gonna miss
next time, believe me.

Give me that g*n, Scotty.

No, Jess.
Now listen to me.
Give me a chance.

You go on your way
with the women, I'll go my way.

We won't never bother
each other no more.

I want that g*n, Scotty.

Don't make me
do it, Jess. Please.

You use all the b*ll*ts up
in that g*n, Scotty,

it ain't gonna
mean nothin' to us.

Don't make it any worse
on yourself than it is.

That g*n means
food for all of us.

I saw some rabbits
in them hills.

Come on.

More?

No.

I feel like I've
been to a party

or a banquet.

Go ahead, Scotty.

Scotty, when you
had the g*n,

when you had
your big chance,

why'd you pass it up?

Well, Jess and me,

we've known each other
for a long time.

Kinda friends,
I guess.

I ain't never done
nothin' but slap stage leather

all my life,

and I was gettin'
tired of it.

I wanted
to live a little

before my time
was up.

And I thought, with a piece
of that money, well...

I ain't never hurt
nobody or nothin'.

But what I was
doin' to you folks,

or helpin' to do,

I couldn't do
no more of that.

Jess here,
he got a right to live.

I don't.

It's gettin' cold.

- Let's get movin'.
- Tonight?

It's the best time.

Walkin' keeps you warm,
the sun ain't beatin' down.

But we've had food.
At least that's something.

Please let us rest.

All them whiskey bottles
we've been findin',

that means they're drinkin' some
and they're movin' slow.

You have to get
'em, don't you?

Yeah.

That's the way it is.

Rest.

Just a few minutes.

Easy.

Guess I've
given out, huh?

You're doin'
just fine.

No.

Each time,
as I go along,

it seems to get
harder for me.

You'll make it, Lottie.

No. That's not
what I mean.

I mean, each time,
as I move on,

go to another town,
hope,

each time,
nothing happens.

Guess a girl like me
wasn't meant to be anything

or to have anything.

How long can I just
keep smilin' and laughin'

when... when inside,
it just hurts...

'cause nobody cares?

Not even for the next day,
nobody cares.

Is this...

Is this all worth it?

To go back...

and keep bein'...
bein' what I am?

Lottie, some people
spend all their life

lookin' for somethin',

and never really know
what they're lookin' for.

But hope, that's somethin'
you can't give up.

See, there's a reason
for you bein' here.

Now findin' out
that reason, that's hope.

You'll see.

Someday,
it'll pay off.

You're strong inside,
and you're not afraid.

Those two things
won't let you down.

Not now, not ever.

I don't know what you're
talkin' about, Jess.

I only know that...

I want...

I want somebody to care.

Somebody does care.

I care a lot.

Oh. Oh, Jess.

What do you
make of it?

Stack's gotten
rid of 'em all.

The money's his now.

Wait.

He might be in
better shape than you are.

That wouldn't take
much doin'.

I'll stay outta range,
get his attention.

You surprise him.

All right, Scotty.

You two stay here.

Jess.

Yeah, Scotty?

I done
a terrible thing, Jess.

Did I make it up some?

Yeah, Scotty.

You made up for it good.

You mean that?

[Lottie] Jess!

Oh, Jess.

I don't know.
I don't know.

What do you mean,
you don't know?!

Where else
would he go?

We was haulin' it
for Rawlins.

Maybe he kept
goin' that way, maybe not.

He let the quicksand
take Link.

He shot Jojo.

Up and left me
out here to die.

We shoulda known,
we shoulda known.

All the time
we was drinkin',

he never touched it.

He was waitin'.

Waitin' until
he could get away
with the money.

All of it.

You ain't lost.

You see that over there?

That's the Sawtooth range.

Rawlins is right at
the bottom of that big one.

About ten miles.

That's where Stack'd be.

There's no place else
he'd go.

Ten miles!

I can't make it.

Sure, you can.

We can't... we can't
stay here and live.

You've got a man,
haven't you?

I thought you
wanted to see him.

All right, you first.

I'll never make it
with this shoulder. Never.

You want me
to leave you here?

Today.

It'll be today.

Carr.

Wake up.

Mister, you got
a doctor in this town?

Have him tend
to these women, huh?

Everybody, another drink!

Another drink!

Where's everybody goin'?

You couldn't have.

What's the matter, Stack?

Something go wrong?

Did it?

Huh?

Lottie's late.

- What time are we leaving?
- Couple of minutes.

Is Green River
like this?

Close. Um...

Smaller, maybe.

I think I'm
going to like it.

I'm sure you will.

Well, are you ready?

I didn't see you inside.
Where were you?

I was in the office
getting my ticket changed.

Aren't you going
to stay in Green River?

Just to change coaches.

Well, where
are you going?

I was thinkin' that,
well, when we passed
through Laramie,

why, it seemed like
such a nice town

that, well, I guess
I'll try my luck there.

Oh?

Oh.

It's been a lucky
place for me, Lottie.

I hope it'll be
the same for you.

Let's go, huh?

Let's roll, Johnson.
