Three black churches
in three weeks?

What the hell is going on?

It's called racism, lieutenant.

The b*mb squad
says all three fires

have been ignited with
a homemade b*mb.

- Were they identical?
- Unconfirmed.

Well, here's a stupid
question that I have to ask.

Any witnesses?

Everyone from the

The b*mb squad has confirmed

Other than that,

You know, I got to split. So,

So basically, what
you're telling me is that

Excuse me.

Hey, reverend, what's going on?

- Sorry to barge in on you.
- Oh, no problem.

Always have time for the lord.

Um...

- Can we take a walk?
- Sure.

Yo, Eddie, five minutes.

Harris: The ministers of
Harlem have elected me

to be the leader of the protest.

Protest against who?

The police department.

We want to embarrass the
commissioner and the mayor

into using every
possible resource.

Reverend, if you do that,

then you may take
this case away from me.

If that happens, I'm sorry.

- This isn't personal.
- Well, it's personal to me.

What do you suggest?

I suggest you
be a little patient.

After three churches have been
burned and two people dead?

Are you serious?

I am not sleeping on
this case, reverend.

Now, you have my word on that.

Dexter and Mrs. Sammuels'
funeral is tomorrow

at my church.

If you want Patience, brother,

you'll have to look
at the loved ones.

Look at the
community in the eyes...

And ask for it.

Anybody ever hear of the
free Christian right coalition?

Doesn't ring a bell.

It's your average
r*cist militia.

A*F's been watching
for a long time

anyway, so far, they
haven't been able to infiltrate.

I'll give it a shot.

I don't wanna do that to you. I
don't wanna put you on the spot.

It's no problem, but I think
there's another suspect

we should look into first.

- Oh, yeah? Who's that?
- Greg Thomas.

Greg Thomas, the artist.

I've talked to him.
He didn't see anything.

No offense, j.C.,
but I'm not buying it.

When the church was
burning, he was the only one

that wasn't inside.

Come on, man. That's not
good enough to bring him in.

I also found out
he painted a mural

at the house of worship ame

that was burnt down
three weeks ago

and he painted windows

at flock of the lord, the
other church that went up.

- Does he even have a record?
- No.

Just one hell of a connection
with three burned churches.

Lieutenant, listen,
I talked to the guy.

He's feeling really messed up
about these people that died.

I don't think we should
press him unnecessarily.

I understand, j.C.,
and I sympathize,

however we really need
to cover our bases here.

So let's see how
this artist pans out

and then we'll check
the militia, alright?

Thomas: So, you
think I had something

to do with those burnings?

Torres: Well, then, how do
you explain the coincidence?

Easy. It... it's a coincidence.

Nah, that's a little too
easy, don't you think?

I ain't got to explain
a damn thing to you.

McNamara: You
don't have to explain

'cause we got it figured out.

See, Greg, you
got hired to do work

in all the churches that burned.

I... I did work in
libraries and hospitals

and none of those
ever burned down.

Well, did those
churches pay you yet?

No, no... not yet.

Torres: So, once your paintings
are on a wall or a window

you... you can't take it back.

So, if they don't pay
you, then what do you do?

I don't do the
paintings for the money.

I... I do them for
the glory of god.

Come on, Greg.
You were pissed off!

"Glory of god" like that matters
when you can't pay the rent.

God is the only
thing that matters.

And if I can't provide
for myself, then he will.

So maybe god burned the
churches in order to provide for you?

Or better yet maybe god
made you burn the churches.

Those people practically
died in front of me.

Then who was it that
made you k*ll them?

No one.

So, if no one made
you do it, then it was you.

No. No. That's not what I said!

You're trying to twist
my words around!

You're trying to twist
my words around!

Hey!

Detective McNamara, can I
have a word with you, please?

What the hell was that about?

You're bordering on harassment.

What am I supposed to do? Hold
his hand and sing him a lullaby?

Say please and thank you?

Come on, you shoved
the man in his seat,

you treat him like he's
some... some filthy-a*s dog.

Is this a black thing, Williams?

No, is that a white
thing, McNamara?

You forget about that
kid died in your arms.

I thought you wanted to
find the jerk that k*lled him?

You think I can forget
about the kid that died?

I can't.

But the man that k*lled
him is not in that room.

Oh, I see, so, this is like
psychic police work, huh?

No, it's about
community sensitivity.

Look, I may be the new
kid on this block, but I've had

a gold shield as
long as you, okay?

So if you think you
can intimidate me

you're only kidding yourself.

- Just so you know.
- Yeah.

[Intense music]

Williams: So, how was
school today, little man?

That place is wack.

Why do you say
that? What happened?

Nothing happened. Just those
white kids act stupid sometimes.

Alright. So you want
to give me an example?

Like today.

We were supposed to
break into our study groups

for the science test,

but nobody picks me
to be in their group.

Ah, so they hurt
my baby's feelings.

Oh, come on, dad.

Those honkies don't
faze me no more.

- What'd you call them?
- Honkies.

Oh, so I see, so,
because your classmates

decide they're
going to be ignorant

you figure you'll stoop down
to their level, is that right?

Look, dad, I'm not on the "I
have a dream" trip anymore.

I don't like white people
any more than they like me.

So, really, I don't
care how they treat me.

- I don't think you mean that.
- I do mean it.

And you know it's not fair.

White cops beat on us, so
we don't do anything about it.

So, now, they get to burn
our churches that we don't do

anything about it.

So, what do you
suggest that we do?

Burn some of their churches.

Oh, well, that is a good idea.

We burn their churches,
they burn another one of ours.

It goes back and forth.
That make sense to you?

I just don't think
it's right that

they get away with everything.

He was an eight year old kid.

I tried really hard

to save his life.

But I couldn't.

I even get nightmares about it.

Do you have any idea
what that's like, Mr. Davis?

To watch an eight-year-old child

die in your arms?

- Hmm?
- No.

Williams: Of course not.

'Cause you just throw your
bombs and then you run.

You don't want to get
close to those that you hurt.

Sign this confession and
make it easy on yourself.

Look, detective, these
things you're talking about,

I could never do.

You damn coward.

Look, if you're going
to be a r*cist b*stard,

you might as well
be open about it.

What in the hell
makes you think I did it?

The last b*mb was
made with pyrodex.

What is pyrodex?

The stuff that you
ordered on your credit card

and had delivered to your house.

- Are you sure?
- You know damn right I'm sure.

Now sign this confession!

[Instrumental music]

Moreno: So he
confessed to all four fires?

Yep. But if he's got any
accomplices he's not talking.

[Scoffs] Well, it sounds
like you guys are close.

- Aye!
- Oh, hey.

- Bruto.
- I know.

Listen, can we talk
about something else?

I heard the doctor said you
might be getting out soon.

Yeah, in a week or two.

Well, I want you to
come home with me.

Excuse me?

What, all of a sudden
you can't hear?

You want me to move in with you?

Yeah. I mean, I...

I thought about it and I
think this is for the best.

What do you mean
you thought about it?

Look, Eddie, I don't
want you doing anything

because you feel sorry for me.

No.

I mean...

I love you.

Look, you could think
about it all you want.

There's just one thing.

"No" is not an option.

[Chuckles]

Come on.

Like I said

we're going to go through
this together, okay?

Come here. Now, give me a hug.

I don't care if you've spend
all week, I need the information.

- What is wrong with you?
- Dad.

I have practice
in a half an hour.

Excuse me, g, don't you
see me on the phone?

Now, have a seat. I'll
be with you in a minute.

Alright, as soon as
you get it. Thank you.

Jeez.

No offense, j.C.,
but you look like hell.

Oh, I haven't been
getting much sleep lately

and this is the reason why.

What's this?

Davis got a job at a coffee shop

like three weeks ago.

- Those are the days he had off.
- Uh-huh.

Now check this out.

- No, no, come here.
- Now, what's going on here?

Where's my father?

What the hell are you
doing running in here?

- I want to see him!
- Excuse me! Shut your mouth!

Carter, do me a favor, take
this kid up to interrogation room

number one, I will
get your father for you.

Mac, can you get
Mr. Davis, please?

- Yeah.
- Thank you.

What the hell is goin' on here?

People running in here
like they own the place!

[Williams sighs]

Is that the son of that h*nky

that burned them churches?

Is that the man's son?

- Come here.
- Where we going?

- Come here.
- Where are we going?

Come here.

Shut your mouth, alright?

Alex, this is my son g, okay?

He can't stand white people.

G, this is Alex. His father
burns black churches.

Think y'all have
a lot to talk about.

- Thanks, Mac.
- What's going on?

You want to see what
the future looks like?

G: If my father was
that dumb I'd hate him.

Alex: He's not dumb. G:
That's right. He's stupid.

Alex: So what would you do,
if you had to choose between

all the black people dying
first and all the white people?

Who would you pick?

That's why he's
burning the churches?

Look, my dad used
to be happy, alright?

Man, you trippin'.

My dad once told me that
y'all blame us for everything.

So, now, pops ain't
happy is all our fault?

That's right. And you
blame us for everything too.

- We have a reason to.
- So do we.

Maybe if I started burnin'
some of your churches,

you'd have more of a reason.

Yeah, like you'd know how.

Fertilizer and fuel oil.

Try pyrodex, idiot!

I guess I do see your point.

I guess I'd want all the
white people to die first.

Yeah, that's what I figured.

[Instrumental music]

- Would you come here a second?
- Yeah.

Would you take Mr. Davis in
there and take the cuffs off?

Thank you.

Cooper: I just need
those reports as soon as

you can get them to my
desk, alright? What's up?

Well, looks like we've been
looking at the wrong man.

It's his son that's
burning those churches.

Get outta here. Are you sure?

Sure as I can be.

You're saying that kid's
hooked up with the militia?

Let the kid do their
dirty work for them?

I wanna put a
pass to those guys.

McNamara, you
arrested those militia jerks.

Why don't you go down there and
see what they cough up, alright?

No, j.C., wait.

Let torres do it, alright?

That kid's gonna
give you nothin'.

- Take a look at these.
- Wow.

Davis: So he knows
about pyrodex.

That doesn't mean he burned
down any of those churches.

Look, I've already
confessed to you.

- What more do you want?
- The truth.

You know what this is?

This is your work schedule.

And on the day that stuff was
ordered from your home phone,

you were out busing tables.

And this is a copy of
your son's school records.

Guess who was absent that day?

Davis: This doesn't
prove anything.

Eddie: What do you think, Alex?

You think your dad could be
in two places at the same time?

- Don't say anything.
- Yeah.

Don't say anything, Alex.

I mean, it's bad
enough that your...

Mom passed away a few years ago.

Now, your dad's going
to be on death row.

And he's certainly going to die.

What's the matter with you?
Don't you have a conscience?

Don't you? Two people
are dead because of him.

He didn't have anything to
do with those other churches.

Just... just the one
from two days ago.

Eddie: How do you know that?

Alex: 'Cause he...
Torres: How do you know?

'Cause I rode the
bus to Harlem and...

And I got off and I
saw this church and I...

Threw a b*mb inside.

Torres: Who taught
you how to build a b*mb?

I...

From the Internet. I...

Mr. Davis: Alex, how?

How could you do
something like that?

'Cause n*gg*r*s are taking over.

- Huh, what?
- Remember, dad?

You said you lost
your job because

because of affirmative action

and that the n*gg*r*s
were taking over.

Alex, when I said that, I...

I was angry.

Well, I was angry too!

I was angry too.
