01x02 - Sweating the Technique

Post by bunniefuu »

- [dramatic music playing]

[reporter 1] Former heavyweight
boxing champion Mike Tyson

had a brief medical scare earlier today
during a cross-country flight

from Miami to Los Angeles.

[reporter 2]
The 57-year-old boxer experienced

an ulcer flare-up

that made him nauseated and dizzy.

Paramedics had to tend to Tyson
while he was onboard the plane.

[reporter 3] Mike Tyson's return
to the ring will have to wait.

Organizers announced his match
against YouTuber Jake Paul

has been postponed due to medical issues.

[Mike] A week and a half ago,
I was training, and I was doing great.

And then all of a sudden,
I started feeling tired.

And I was explaining to my trainer,
I don't know what's wrong with me.

Coming here from Miami on the plane,

I went to the bathroom,
and I threw up blood.

The next thing I know, I'm on the floor.
I was defecating tar.

Thank you.

[doctor 1] Not feeling
any tenderness there?

- No way.
- [doctor 1] Wonderful.

[Mike] So, I came here,
they found out I had a big ulcer,

two-and-a-half inches, it was bleeding.

All my friends are calling me
like I'm dying.

[doctor 2]
Thanks for being patient with us.

I know it's frustrating
being in the hospital.

[Mike] I asked the doctor,
"Am I gonna die?"

And she didn't say no.
She said we have options, though.

That's when I got nervous.

[doctor 1] Exercise-wise,
I would take it slow at the beginning.

[Mike] I can't wait to get out
of this m*therf*cker, man.

God, I want to fight and start training.

I don't wanna die in a hospital bedroom.
I wanna die in the ring.

[Jake] I'm the type of person
that likes a schedule

and likes to know what I'm doing,

and this just, like,
threw a wrench in all that.

There's nothing I can do.
It's out of my control.

You know, no one tells
Mike Tyson what to do.

And if he wants to fight me,
of course I'm gonna say yes.

This is the opportunity of a lifetime

to fight one of the two most famous boxers
to ever live.

Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson.

I look at Mike Tyson as a k*ller,

so I never really expected
something like this.

[music concludes]

[car engine rumbling]

[car door closing]

[reporter] The highly anticipated fight

between Jake Paul
and Mike Tyson has a new date.

They'll face off in AT&T Stadium
on November 15th.

That fight was originally scheduled
for July,

but Tyson recently suffered
a flare-up of an ulcer

- that impacted his training schedule.
- [buzzer beeping]

[suspenseful music playing]

[Jake] I have to stay locked in,
and that's why we're here today.

Jab, jab. One, two.

[Jake] Didn't take any days off,
didn't miss any practices.

I've only been doing this for four years.
I'm playing catch-up

to these boxers who have been doing it
their whole entire lives.

[trainers] Whoo!

[Jake] Any local retirement homes
anyone know about?

[chuckles] Anyone in there want to fight?

[Ice T] The fight was six weeks out

from its original date
when it was postponed.

For any pro fighter, every day
of training camp is carefully planned.

Ultimately,
it all led to a decision pretty quickly,

to still fight on July 20th,

but against bare-knuckle MMA champion
Mike Perry.

[huffs]

At the end of the day,
the Mike Tyson fight's great,

but I have the goal
to become world champion,

and I'm not slowing
that down for anyone.

[music concludes]

I'm kind of glad it's rescheduled
because I don't want any excuses.

I want both men at 100%.

And I got a feeling this is going to be
the fight of the century, brothers.

This is gonna be a good one.

[Carl] Mike Tyson's health,
that would be the biggest issue for me.

The main problem I've got is
if Mike Tyson gets injured.

I'm going to pray for Mike Tyson
because I love Mike Tyson.

It's a dangerous fight.
Mike Tyson, be careful, please.

[tense music playing]

[Ice T] The doctor ordered him
to take it easy.

So, for a few weeks after his ulcer scare,
Mike Tyson did cut back on his training.

But hearing Jake
was still going full throttle

to prep for his summertime fight
stoked his competitiveness,

and Mike got back to work.

Four, five, six, seven,
eight, nine, 100. Good work.

[Mike] You wouldn't believe
what I endured from my ulcer.

I lost 26 pounds. Can you imagine that?

It look faster today than yesterday?

- [Billy] Very fast. A lot faster.
- [exclaims]

[Mike] I was so pissed off
because I peaked.

I was good, talking sh*t, ready.

You know, eventually I got to start
chasing you around the ring.

- [Rafael] That's it.
- I think I'll be running and sh*t.

[Rafael] Every day we add something more.
Every day.

[Mike] We're on our way.

That's what life is about.
k*lling yourself.

[yelling]

And then making room for a new beginning,
a new life, a new person.

[music concludes]

[Mike groaning]

How's the back feel?

Everything feel...
At the last round, start asking...

- Okay. Progress.
- ...but a lot of progress.

Good. Good, good, good.

[Billy] He was so fast today on one move,
he was too fast for his own good.

He got there before...

setting your weight and launching.
Remember that one?

- [Mike] Yeah. I remember that. [chuckles]
- Yeah. Well, it happened.

But that's beautiful.
Controlled fury, man.

That's the key.

[tense music playing]

[Ice T] Controlling his fury was always
Mike Tyson's biggest advantage

in besting his opponents.

But as the decade turned in 1990,

Tyson would face
his toughest challenge. Success.

The truth was he'd begun losing his way
with the death of his trainer,

Cus D'Amato, in the mid '80s.
His training tapered off,

trumped by the thrills of life
as a celebrity.

[reporter] He's even been seen partying
in Las Vegas night spots.

[Ice T] Leading up to his first fight
of the new decade,

he was actually knocked down in sparring.

The armor he'd worn for so long
was about to be stripped away.

On February 11, 1990,

James "Buster" Douglas
entered the ring in Tokyo, Japan,

a 42-to-one underdog to Tyson.

Douglas was knocked down
in the eighth round but got up.

And a few rounds later,
he shocked the world.

- [crowd cheering]
- [tense music playing]

Two, three, four, five, six,

seven, eight, nine...

[crowd cheering]

[brooding music playing]

[Barak] Upsets is a big part of boxing,

but the benchmark is when Mike Tyson lost
to Buster Douglas.

[Wallace] The loss to Buster Douglas
was everything. I mean,

real legitimate fighters
were no longer afraid of him

because they saw this guy's a human being.
He's made of the same stuff I am.

That stripped the cloak
of invincibility off him.

[Ice T] Over the next several years,
Tyson's life continued to spiral downward,

but he kept getting chances
to come back,

including a shot at reclaiming
the heavyweight title in 1997,

- in a rematch with Evander Holyfield...
- [announcer]...Mike Tyson!

[Ice T] ...where he ended up
shocking the world again,

only this time
in even more staggering fashion.

[commentator] Oh, my goodness,
he's got a bloody right ear.

Holyfield bit by a dirty Mike Tyson.

It's over, I think
they've just about had enough.

It is complete devilment.

Tyson is just taking swipes

- at anybody in front of him.
- [crowd clamoring]

It is what it is. You know?

Life is more about forgiving yourself.

It's what I've had.
I beat myself up a lot.

I didn't forgive myself
for things that I had done.

Sixteen, slow. Four more.

Seventeen, slow. Eighteen, slow.

- Nineteen, head up. Twenty, good.
- [trainer] Looks good. What a good set.

Done, Mike.

I have a lot of regrets.

You know, people always say,
"I have no regrets. No regrets."

- But I have...
- [man] I hate that sh*t.

- Yeah. It's a f*cking lie.
- [man] They're f*ck' liars.

You're not a human being.

[trainer] I think the key is not to have
a lot of regrets.

No, the key is to be able to handle
your regrets.

Gotta handle them.
It's all about handling your situation,

- dealing with it. Yeah.
- [man] Learn, move forward.

And continue going, keep it moving.

You know? In boxing, they always say
a moving target's hard to hit.

But that's... that's something
you could use in life as well.

Just keep it moving, man.

Don't stop.
Don't let nothing put you in a standstill.

Just keep it moving.

[man] Do you think
you've done that pretty well?

Yeah. Big wheels keep rolling.
They don't stop for no one or no thing.

[Ice T] It's now exactly 119 days out
from Mike Tyson, Jake Paul.

But that means it's July 20th,
the original fight date.

And Jake is facing
the MMA champion Mike Perry.

In the world of bare-knuckle,
they call Perry "the king of violence,"

but it still feels like a tune-up,
with Jake carrying himself

with the confidence of a fighter
worthy of one.

[Jake] You take life,
and you roll with the punches.

We were supposed to be with Tyson tonight,
but we move on to the next Mike.

I'm staying active because my goal
is to be world champion,

and I'm not slowing down for anyone, and...

I'm gonna finish this guy,
put on a performance,

get more experience under the lights
against a guy who comes forward,

who throws big shots like Tyson,

and it's just gonna make me better
for November 15th.

[Nakisa] Absolutely there was
a risk involved in it,

but that's the game that we're in.
No risk, no reward.

And it wasn't like the Tyson fight
was just a month later.

We were talking close
to five months after the fact.

Five months in the fight game
is a lifetime,

and we couldn't see ourselves waiting
to see what would happen from there.

[Logan] Do you have a game plan
or you just gonna...

- [Jake] For the fight?
- [Logan] Yeah.

I'm going to test him really early.

- You... Oh, really?
- Yeah.

I feel like he's going
to do the same to you.

- Yeah, but my jab will win that battle.
- Yeah, for sure.

And I'll get off to the side
and just load the f*ck up on some sh*t.

- Punch, punch, punch, punch, punch.
- [indistinct chatter]

- Let's f*cking go.
- Let's go.

I feel the vibes. Dude, you're...

- I'm locked in.
- You got a good vibe right now.

- I'm absolutely dialed.
- Let's go.

[announcer] From the sold-out Amalie Arena
here in Tampa, Florida, USA,

this is the moment
we've all been waiting for.

The main event of the evening.

[rousing music playing]

I thought it was a wrestling event.
I thought it was WWE.

And they said, "No, that's Jake Paul."

I said, "Oh, I had no idea
that it was happening."

- [commentator] Here we go!
- [bell ringing]

[crowd cheering]

[Ice T] It's both another test of the idea
that Jake Paul can take a beating

and more evidence that he can.

But to plenty of observers,
a victory isn't enough

to convince them Jake's for real.

And the skeptics include some friends
watching from Las Vegas,

looking for a ch*nk in the armor
or a weakness below the surface.

- His head is up when he's punching.
- Exactly.

[commentator]
How much more can Mike Perry take?

This may be it! Right hand!
And he's down for a third time!

[referee speaking indistinctly]

[commentator] And they'll wave it off!

There is a new King of Violence,
and his name is Jake Paul!

[pundit] It was probably a lot tougher
than Jake thought it would be,

but in the end, his boxing experience,
that people love to knock,

won him the fight.

And now he gets to punch his ticket
to fight Mike Tyson.

Final thing, I presume that Mike Tyson
is watching this right now.

Is there anything you want to say to him?

[chuckles] Mike, I love you,
but this is my sport now.

It's an honor to get in the ring with you.
I'm so, so honored.

You're a legend, but I'm going
to take your throne, brother.

[chuckles]

There's a fundamental difference
between me and Jake.

He's a manufactured k*ller.

Television and papers made him a k*ller.

He's manufactured.
I'm a natural born k*ller.

[producer] What was the problem?

Fundamentals.

[Ice T] Theo "Third" Chambers, like most,

was unconvinced that the YouTuber
he watched on the internet

had what it took to be a pro.

But he quickly had a change of heart
once he met with Jake.

Nevertheless,
tearing down the old foundation,

the only way to build something new,
can be a daunting endeavor.

[Theo] It's almost like a tree, right?

And if something is a bit wrong
with the tree,

but then you take the scissors
and make the tree look good.

And you, like...
But I see that the roots are f*cked up.

You get comfortable doing it
like this shadowboxing.

It's the same thing when you fight.
You get comfortable doing it.

That's why shadowboxing is so important.

[Jake] It was like
I had never boxed before.

All the details, all the flaws
and things he was pointing out,

I was like starting from day one.

And he was like, "Dude,
we're not even going to throw punches."

"You need to, like,
work from the ground up."

Boom, badum, a little rock.

Bam, bam!

[J'Leon] Angles, foot placement, distance,

little things that were just missed
that he's picking up now.

I see what you're doing. That's good.

We learn how to process
that sh*t perfectly

to where the kid gets it.

Break that line.

You break the line,
then you can hit with the counterpunch.

[Jake] Today was a big focus
on keeping my jab hand high.

Jab. Same thing.

- Jab. One, two. There you go.
- [bell ringing]

[Jake] And keeping my weight farther back

versus sometimes I have
a tendency to lean forward.

[Theo] Yeah, we find that balance. Good.

[Jake] Working on some inside game,
turning my hips with each punch,

then smothering them on the inside.

There you go.

[Theo] Back down his chest.

[speaks indistinctly]
...came through like this.

[Jake] Staying in a rhythm off of the jab
so that I can continue punching

with certain combinations.

- [grunts]
- Good.

After the Tommy Fury fight, the loss,

I felt like he questioned everything.
He questioned himself, his preparation.

I felt like we didn't protect him.

Now where we are, the way we train,
we leave no stone unturned.

We know, without a doubt in our mind,
Jake is 1000% ready.

I'll bet the house.

[Larry] Y'all stretch out good now.
We're going a little quicker today.

[music concludes]

[Jake] I don't like track work,
but it is what it is.

Gotta...

dig deep.

It's mental training, too, all these days.

[grunts]

Set, hup!

Chin down. Good.
Good job, fellas. Good job.

Good job, Jake. Quick, quick, quick,
quick, quick, quick, quick, quick, quick.

[Ice T] When strength coach Larry Wade
began game-planning for this fight,

- he added a cardio regiment...
- [Larry] Let's work!

- Let's work!
- [Ice T] ...to Jake's already substantial

daily routines.

Shadowbox. We got eight
of those total, which is four laps.

[Ice T] The idea is that if Jake
can build his stamina and conditioning

higher than it's ever been,
it'll be a critical edge against Tyson.

[Larry] You looking good.

[Jake] After a short period of time,
I wasn't getting tired in fights.

Not that you don't already know this.
Our job ain't easy.

Sometimes it gets harder to do
this stuff than other days, right?

The integrity of what we do,

- from the very beginning...
- Yeah.

- ...is what matters the most. All right?
- Facts.

- Set, hup!
- [Jake] Larry brought that championship

highest level experience to me.

When you get to this point in training,
you know what it's about.

You're getting a step closer
to that fight,

and it doesn't matter.
My mindset remains the same.

[Jake] Mike is the greatest heavyweight
of all time, in my opinion.

That not only excites me,
but it keeps me on edge.

It builds some insecurities,
doubt, and fear.

The beautiful thing is having the courage
to go into the fight with those things,

to push me every single day
in training to make me better.

[J'Leon] You know, this is a gamble.
f*ck it, you know?

If Mike Tyson can knock out Jake Paul,
that moment would be so major for him.

What a f*cking story to tell, right?

But f*ck that. [chuckles]

The legend must fall.
We gotta do what we gotta do.

[Larry clapping]
