I started performing
at age four,

and I haven't stopped.

I grew up in the circus,

and I am the third
generation of magicians.

Magic is in my DNA.

My husband, Arkadio,
is a magician too.

We have great chemistry when
we perform illusions together.

I also love to sing.

And I have recorded
many of my songs.

One of them is even
called "Magic."

how to do that?

- Alone.

a big dream of yours,

that quick change has really
come into magic so much.

It used to be for years
and years and years,

quick-change stuff
was just the same.

It was stagnant.

And there's this whole new wave

of quick-change acts like this
that are just amazing.

And you put all this incredible
manipulations you do...

Every single move
that can be done with cards.

You do them all,
and you do them beautifully.

And it's wonderful
to see a woman

do serious manipulation stuff.

And the principles
you're using here,

we could say where
the principles came from.

And the genius
of this act is that

no one would recognize it.

You do a torn-and-restored
newspaper,

but no one would know that.

You do a goodnight banner,
and no one would know that.

It's all this stuff
that's been repurposed,

so it's totally new.

Plus speaking of totally new,
the thing with the clear bag,

where the dress pops
out of it onto you

is a brand-new thing
and just beautiful.

of a magic trio

When I was 19, I was
a c*ck young magician

who thought card magic
was boring.

Then I met a legend
of magic, Juan Tamariz.

He taught me cards
are like people.

Inside each one,
there's a story,

and it's yearning to be told.

One day, Juan challenged me
to take a classic card effect

and do it in a way that
no one had done before.

And somehow, I figured it out.

I'm doing it tonight because
I love card magic now.

And I'll love it just
a little bit more

if I fool Penn and Teller.

in our profession.

Because the more and more
we know,

the less and less we get
to experience

this wonderful feeling
of impossibility.

Well, I'm going to try
to perform something today

that hopefully will re-create
that emotion in you.

A little presumptuous of me,
I guess, or a little special

is the fact that I'm
going to try to amaze you

with a routine that
you guys know,

I mean, from in to out...

The triumph.

- Hmm.

- So let's start
where everyone starts

and end with a big finish.

All right, Brooke.
- I'm excited.

- I'm going to ask you
to reach in

and just take one playing card.

- Ready?
- Yes.

Don't be greedy, just one.
- Just one.

- All right,
and I'll give you a pen.

So I'll let you please
sign it on the face.

- OK.

- You might want to
try to hide it from me

because even I know myself.

If I have a chance,
I'm going to look.

And I've seen this trick before.

All right, show it to

In the meantime,
what I'm doing is

I'm turning half
of the cards face up,

the other cards face down.

So we're going to shuffle these
two halves face up, face down.

It's going to be a mess.
- OK.

- But before that,
we need to replace

your card into the deck.

Now, I never want
to see the card,

so it's going to
always be face down.

You get to choose.

Do you want it in the face up
pile or the face down pile?

It doesn't matter because
they'll get shuffled.

- Face up, please.
- Then you put it face up.

But keep it face down.
- I will.

- Just slide it where you want.
Yeah, just like this.

- All done.
- Good.

- More? OK.
- Square it up into a pile.

Yeah, perfect.

So I'm going to shuffle
these two piles that

are facing a different way.

I'm going to try to do it
as well as I possibly can.

Now, if you don't remember
the card, don't worry.

- So sometimes people
think that maybe

I didn't shuffle well.

So I want to show you.

How do you feel?

Do you think that the
cards are shuffled

- Looks good to me.

- Well, maybe if I want
to be a perfectionist,

I might put one more there.

All right, and we magicians...
Especially maybe the gentlemen

Penn and Teller...
Might be curious on, well,

they're shuffled on this side.

But what about the other side?

It's because we magicians,
we're a strange breed.

- I know.

I'm learning that.
- Yeah. [chuckles]

So I'll show

And you get to see that.

So in this instance, I just want

to be absolutely sure that

It's like a little baby of mine.

So I love it.

And I... as I love it,
I wanted to perform it

for two
of my favorite magicians.

- There's a lot of perusing

like this ever go wrong?

- Oh, yes, it does.
I mean, we're...

- And then what do you do?

- I pray.

just because triumph

is a standard trick
and a trick we've done

and a trick that almost any
serious magician has done.

And there's only one moment
in this whole trick

that a magician cares about,

and that's when you show
the other side.

You can show one side with
some face up and face down,

but you can't show the other
side face up and face down.

So that's the only instant
in that trick we cared about.

And we asked to do something
we haven't done in years.

But we thought
you were up to it.

Antonio Martínez,

and I'm from a small city
near Barcelona.

Growing up, my parents supported

my passion for magic.

But my mom wanted to make sure
that I had a backup plan,

just in case.

Since I like science a lot,
I got a degree

to be a laboratory technician.

Thankfully, I've never had
to use it because of my magic.

Spain is very well known
for card magic.

Tonight, I would like
to show that there

is so much more to magic
in Spain than just cards.

This has been a very
bittersweet time for me.

I've been on TV twice
in Europe this past year.

And now, I'm doing my first
international show

on "Fool Us."

However, my mom passed
away three years ago,

and she is not here
to enjoy it with me.

Before we lost her, I showed
my mom the original concept

of my trick tonight,
and she loved it.

Now, I get to perform it
for Penn and Teller.

And I know she will be watching.

[cheers and applause]

- Give it up for Barcelona

- I know the point
of this show is to fool

Penn and Teller
with a magic trick.

But I have something far more
amazing to show you tonight.

I have created the first
teleportation device

in the world.

If this works,
I don't want a trophy.

I want a Nobel Prize.

[laughter]

How did I come up with this
life-changing invention?

Well, the truth is,
I'm very absent minded,

and I'm always forgetting
things when I leave

the house, for example, cash.

These may look like
ordinary paper boxes,

but they are actually
the first prototype

of my invention, the portal.

Here is how it works.

Say, I'm out with my friends,
and I need money.

I go home, and my mother
just has to take a bill,

fold it,

and magically send it
to me using the portal.

[gentle guitar music]

[applause]
Amazing, right?

♪ ♪

I know some of you are
thinking that the money

is still in the first box.

But as you can see,
it really is gone.

But I realized this
prototype would

only work for small objects.

So I created a bigger one.

♪ ♪

So if I'm out on a date,

and I want some chewing gum
for my breath,

not that I need it, but...

[exhales]
[sniffs]

[coughs]

[laughter]

Anyway, the crazy thing
I discovered was

when my mom put in a pack
of gum that was almost empty.

♪ ♪

it came to me through
the portal full of gum.

I told you this was more
than just a magic trick.

[applause]

♪ ♪

But my ambition was very big,

and my portal was still
too small.

So I created...

an extra-large portal.

Yes, this came in
handy just last week

when I was coming here and
I left my passport at home.

I have already told you
how absent minded I am.

You know, if I could
really do magic,

I'd have a better
passport photo.

[laughter]

Anyway, I made it here,
thanks to my Passportal.

[laughter]

[audience exclaims]

A miracle.

[applause]

Of course, I continued
to experiment.

I wondered, what would
happen if I combined

boxes of different sizes?

Let's try it.

[gentle guitar music]

The boxes must be carefully
placed and perfectly aligned.

Otherwise,
the space-time continuum

could be disrupt when
traveling through the portal.

And the Earth could explode.

[laughter]

For this next part
of my experiment,

I brought some
of my travel photos.

I have a ton of
pictures from my trips.

And my final portal does
an amazing thing with them.

- I grew up in Connecticut,
a middle child.

I may or may not
have liked attention.

When I was about 10 years old,
I taught myself to juggle.

The only place to buy
juggling equipment

was at the magic store.

An employee there
showed me a trick.

I was like, whoa.

I taught myself more magic,
but I didn't consider

doing it professionally.

I'd never known anyone who did.

So I studied engineering
and got a normal job

in project management
at theme parks.

OK, so not everyone might
consider that a normal job.

During COVID,
like so many other workers,

I got laid off.

But it was just
the catalyst I needed

to finally take the leap
into magic full time,

a natural transition.

After all, magic tricks are
kind of like theme park rides.

Done well, they can both
leave you breathless.

Penn and Teller, watch out

So how long have
you been a magician?

- So I've been doing magic
full time for about two years.

- Two years as a pro, and
you're already on "Fool Us."

This has to be a
magnificent night for you.

- Yeah, it's very exciting.

Just seven years ago,
I saw Penn and Teller perform

right here in this theater.

And that actually
kind of reignited

my love for magic at the time.

- And then here you are tonight.

- Yeah.
- That's got to be surreal.

- I know, full circle.

- And you were an engineer
at an amusement park.

- That's right.

- So are there any
similarities between that

and being a magician?
- There are.

They both require technology.

And then they both have
a storytelling aspect.

And it's finding that perfect
marriage of the storytelling

and of the technology
that makes a trick

or makes a ride
really unforgettable.

- All right, Ari,
let's see if you've

won yourself a "Fool Us" trophy.

- Hey, Ari.

Boy, you know, I'm carny trash,

as people are very fond
of pointing out.

So we're watching this as
magicians but also as carnies.

And we were thinking, you know,

you could have rigged
the bottles to see

how many rings would go on.

There are ways to do that.

But as a carny, I would say that

that's just plain too much work.

So we think you had
another way of doing it.

It's a wonderful plot,
wonderful idea.

Does Brooke get to
keep the plump panda?

- Absolutely.

that a good carny would know

the right people to bribe.
