'cause I do respect Tony so much, you
know, as a dude and as an artist,
and he's incredibly talented.

They're both such good singers,
and I think that the outcome

There was definitely a time when
there was maybe a fork in the road
where I decidedly went for an
independent approach to things.

What started out as an attempt
to maintain credibility...
Mm-hmm. ...Has just kind of
become some glass ceiling
that you just can't shatter.
You're either integrity-filled
or you're not. Sure.
And you're just using your gifts. Yeah.
There's something credible about that.
Totally.
I think right now what's happening
is this awesome convergence
of Tony being true to himself,
true to his artistry.
It's not as though you can only be
famous or credible, and I think
that he sees that now.

I hear you working way too hard.
It seems like you're really pushing.
Right.
With Tony, there's a raw quality to
his voice that's really special,
and if we can eliminate that
strain but still keep the urgency
of a real, raw, emotional
vocal, that'd be great.
Is there a range where
you're scared of going?
Knowing that there is a large chunk of
my voice that is not strong at all,
I think a lot of the effort that goes
into the way I sound and sing now
is trying to sing over and around that.
You don't have to avoid
it, I don't think.
Pulling back is good.
Yeah.
But sometimes even belting it can help.
There's a couple parts of the song I'm having trouble with.
It's just I've got to sing some
higher notes, and normally,
that's not my strong suit.
Yeah, man.

I got some really great
advice from Adam and alanis.
Finding little ways to focus
a little sharper and move on
to winning this thing.

My question for you guys is,
what is it, performance-wise,
that I need to work on to beat Tony?
I think, when I'm watching a
little bit of your body language,
your voice is going out and
forward, but your body language
is kind of tucking back.
And so when I hear...

like, just stand there and just offer it to the people.
And then I think the thing that
translates best is conveying emotion.
You know, all of his lyrics
mean something. Yeah.
So, like, you know, "you love this
town, even if it doesn't ring true,"
you can still say it with
more emotion. Right.
You don't have to toss it away
just 'cause it's low. Yeah.
Probably the most important thing for me to remember
is just to go out and perform.
I have a tendency to rely
on my vocals too much.
At the end of the day, we
have to be great performers.
It's the night of the first battle,
and as our coaches take their seats,
all eyes will be on Adam.
He'll have to pick either Tony or
Chris to move on to the live shows.
To beat Tony, I need to walk
out on stage so confident,
'cause at the end of the day, this is
a battle, and we're out for blood.
This performance could definitely
change my life for the better.

I knew that I needed to pull out everything

what intimidates me about adley
is, you know, she's a powerhouse.
I mean, I can sing high, but I
don't belt it like she does.
I have no idea what I can
do to compete with that.

Raelynn looks like, acts like, sounds

So coming in as an adviser -- it's a
good feeling to hopefully say something
to somebody that's gonna give them
that extra boost of confidence.
That kind of squeak -- I love that
you reeled that in, especially when
it's tender like that.
You know, raelynn is a stylist,
and a part of that is not
just being on 10 all the time.
You got to learn how to dial that back.
I know adley has her style and her sound,
and you do, too, so don't feel like
you're competing against her.
Concentrate on being solid and
just, basically, telling a story.
It's not about competing with her.
It's about competing with yourself
and you just doing the best you can.

It's not really about hitting a huge note
or having this amazing lung capacity.

My eyes were shut half the
time probably because I just
would start smiling so big if I was

I'm more starstruck than
I've ever been in my life.
Adley takes her nervous energy
and just turns it into this big,
loud vocal that comes out.
Why are you nervous?
You got a great voice.
And even if you're singing with raelynn,
if she's got a quieter voice,
prove to the frickin' world
that you can go soft,
as well, yeah. I can do that, too.
Harmonize with her and sound beautiful
and then nail it at the end.
I am scared to go home.
And raelynn definitely has a
very strong gift and a talent,
and she knows how to use that.
You know, if she brings it
full-throttle, I could be in trouble.

but I think, as far as just
being a little more confident
in your vocal ability, adley, you

Lionel has worked with
every genre of music.
He comes from the songwriting
background and being a singer himself.
You know, he's legendary.

good. How have you been feeling?
I'm kind of a head case, control freak.
You can trip yourself out,
but don't, you know.
I'm really good at that.
My perfectionist mind already psychs
me out, and it comes from years
of technical training
as a classical singer.
Because you're so trained, your
perfection level is off the scale.
And sometimes the imperfections are the
ones that we're really looking for.
Right. You follow me?
If you can get used to
that part of you... yeah.
...then that's the magic.
Get out of your own head and
just be in the moment. Yeah.
Because the audience is gonna
know if you're feeling it or not.

The thing that Monique has is
this passionate performance
that I don't necessarily
feel all the time.

genuine and comes from the heart.
She definitely can give
that rooted advice.

In this battle, I definitely consider
myself the underdog, compared to Chris.
That breath made you a
little pitchy there. Yeah.
I really have to be calm, and my breath
has to be steady and in control.
I want you to feel comfortable,
'cause when you feel comfortable,
everything's gonna
just flow from there.

Just relax, 'cause all you want to do
is give back to your parents, right?
Use the emotion and the love that
you feel and put that into the love
that you feel in the song when
you're looking into his eyes.
And that is really gonna work to
your advantage with somebody that's
as trained as Chris, 'cause sometimes
when people get that trained,
it's hard for them to get back in their
heart because they become so technical.
Doesn't always feel as

while not compromising the

sang the word "baby,"

In my mind, it did, anyway.
Because of that -- that was so cool

because, honestly, I've grown
