Singing and music is very much in my blood.
When I was about 14, I started
writing songs with my dad,
and we started performing
those at a coffee shop,
and eventually, we brought my uncle in.
We do some touring and things like that.
I get to see a totally different
side of both of them.
I don't think they're too worried
about losing their lead vocalist,
but I know that they wouldn't want to stand
in between me and a singing career.

around music your whole life,
you're writing it, you're touring.

and got a petroleum-engineering degree.

I am from Honolulu, Hawaii,
but I currently reside in
Los Angeles, California.
Growing up in Hawaii was
very simple and easy.
Everybody knew each other.
It was like family.
I was about 10 years old
when I started singing.
Music was really my passion,
what I wanted to pursue in life.
And my parents decided
that we would move to L.A.
And it was a struggle.
We moved into a house, and the
mortgage was way too expensive.
So my mom opened up
an elderly-care facility in our house,
so we gave up our rooms, and my
family moved into the garage.
I really
believe in cheesa's talent,
so I supported her all the way.
I know we've came through
financial struggles,
but if I have to do it again,
I will do it all over again.
For her.
I am very grateful for that.
My mom and dad gave up everything for me.
And, you know, even though
we struggle so much,
you really have to just do it.

And I am a counselor and teacher
at a program called girls rock camp.
I volunteer at this program
because it makes me feel like
the talents I have are kind of worthwhile.
It's a really exciting
kind of self-empowerment,
both for them and for myself.
The thought of the celebrity
coaches and cameras
and the giant live crowd
is really intimidating
and kind of terrifying.

I've worked so hard for what I do,

Well, there were times where
the pitch was a problem,
but surprisingly, the lower octaves
were very natural for you.

there was, like, this super --
and the whole audience kind of felt it --
like a sultry situation happening,
and I was really happy.
And I was really kind of just
waiting a little bit to feel it.
And he pushed his button,
and that kind of confirmed it for me.
I was like, "you know what? Yeah.
Of course," and I pressed it.
First of all, it's a
great Bonnie Raitt song,
and it's so funny because
Adele is so big right now,
and there are these little
things in your voice
that I hear, and I've heard a lot,
and I would like to kind of
steer you away from that.
'Cause I was kind of hearing, like, sade
or, like, some sort of
cool, subtle, simple thing
and not that big thing that Adele does
and hopefully kind of sculpt that.
I'm just gonna not waste
time arguing with them
and just start coaching you
as if I was your coach.
Yeah, you know,
I actually heard three different singers
through the course of that performance.
It was like a sultry, sexy
thing that you started with,
and then there was that note that you hit
that kind of sounded raw, and
then you did the run at the end.

that could do something
like that and sell it.

When I was around 13, my
mom left with my brother,
and it was me and my dad
fending for ourselves.
Me and my dad, we had our
differences when I was younger
'cause I used to get in a lot of trouble.
I've been partying since 13 years old,
and I didn't stop till I was about 23.
I was reckless, and eventually,
I landed myself in jail.
I got in a fight over
my girlfriend at a bar
and injured the guy pretty badly.
And they sentenced me to
a couple months in jail,
and the whole time, I was trying to write.
And I was singing a lot,
and that just rejuvenated me
as a person and as a musician.
Me and my dad started to get along,
and I know it's something that
we're gonna be able to do
for as long as he can, and
that'll make me happy
because he's done so much for me.
And so you guys play in the band together.
We do. I play tenor saxophone. You do.
It actually used to be my
band, once upon a time,
but he started playing the piano,
and he very quickly took
the whole thing over.
Is that true? That is true.
It's an absoluteto seeg
that I was going to do and
do it better than me.
That's the way it should be.
You might have to find a new
piano player for your old band.

too far into the future.
