that Adam was throwing.

Daly: Creating some tough decisions...

Who is the winner of this battle?

Oh, my God. I'm so torn.

Even as I talk right now,
I don't really know who won.

Blake: There's winners,
and there's losers,

and there's so much joy and heartbreak

involved in the battle rounds,

but nobody can argue
with what we end up with.

It's always the best
of the best of the best.

Daly: Tonight, the battle rounds continue

as our four superstar coaches
pair their artists

to face off in a vocal battle.

They'll be guided by some
of the biggest names in music...

...and get hands-on training
from their coaches.

There's one spot that's pitchy,

'cause that part is up there.

Daly: The artists will have to give
the performance of their lives.

Mackenzie: To come this far
and come up short would just...

it would hurt.

Daly: And our coaches will have to decide

whether to use their remaining steals.

It's a great way
to keep people in the game,

especially when you have to
choose between one or the other

and you know they're both talented.

Daly: In the end, only
one artist will win it all...

and be named "The Voice."

It's my goal every year

and so I gave Liz and Nicole

by my wife, Miranda Lambert.

We hooked up a couple of times.

Blake: I'm gonna have
my expectations set pretty high.

I mean, you got to have some attitude

when you perform that song

and a little bit of that "no, you didn't."

what you've been doing,

how old you are, all that stuff.

I'm 18 years old.

Okay. You're just a little kid.

Me and my family moved
to Nashville a couple years ago

so I could really kind of get my
career started and everything.

So you're... so you're pretty fresh.

- This is pretty new.
- Yeah.

And you?

I'm 25, and I live in Nashville.

Lived there since I was 18,
playing the h*nky-tonks

and did that whole thing.

- Oh, so you're doing the whole working it
and... - Oh, yeah.

I want to win this thing

because Blake knows the country routes.

He knows the people.

He's gonna help me get to the top,

and I believe in him.

I moved to Nashville when I was...

I turned 18 two weeks after I moved there.

- How old were you when you got signed?
- 23 or 22.

Liz is 25 years old.

She's been in Nashville
since she was 18, trying this.

She's had a hard, hard road.

She's at a point in her life

where, in the entertainment business,

this needs to happen now
if it's ever going to.

Nicole: I'm feeling like
the underdog right now

because Liz has so much more experience

and she's so comfortable with it.

So, this is one

where y'all really can look like
you're having a battle

and you're singing against each other

- and it's "screw you"... all that crap.

You know, as much as you can
be kind and say lovely things

about the next contestant,
listen... destroy them.

Do what you have to do.
You're fighting for your life.

Daly: The next day,
Liz and Nicole meet with Blake

for one final rehearsal
before their battle.

Blake: Liz, being as country as you are,

when you have a little bit
of a nasal sound,

which I have, too, what ends up happening

is sometimes it affects your diction.

When Nicole sings, every word is so clear,

and when you're singing next to
her, it makes it stand out more.

- No, absolutely.
- You know what I mean?

Liz: I think Nicole's voice
is very lovely,

and she is young,
and she is ready to fight,

but I'm definitely going to make sure

that I pronounce everything accurately.

And it's like this power,

and by the end of it, you just get soft.

Liz has got a lot
riding on this performance,

but she's gonna have to be
very clear with her words.

I got to be honest with you,
I'm gonna be listening for that.

Nicole, there's one spot
that... that's pitchy.

the key is too high for her.

Honestly, now that I've heard it
a few times,

I'll probably be listening
for that harmony.

So just promise me that's

because I think
you're way too good of a singer

for a pitch thing to be a problem.

can deliver this new-generation
female country attitude,

because, you know, at some point,

I know that she'll be like,

And she'll be so proud. I know she will.

That's the reason you are the two

that I wanted to do that song.

for Music and Performing Arts.

Daly: During the blind auditions,

performing-arts student Alessandra

impressed Adam and Cee Lo
with her polished technique.

Adam: There's just something
special about what you do.

It was very refined,
especially for your age.

Daly: Kayla sang through hardship

while dealing with
her father's liver disease.

Kayla: He can't work.

I mean, he rarely
gets out of bed every morning,

so I'm doing it for him.

Daly: Her performance turned three chairs.

She picked Adam as her coach.

Alessandra: I'm with Adam Levine

I was shocked. I was like,
"oh, my God. I had no idea."

Like, why did you pair us together?

Whenever people are gonna be
singing a song together,

you want them
to kind of be able to like...

connect with each other
to a certain degree.

So rather than think about strategy,

I thought more about

"let's just make
these incredible performances."

Love it.

See? I am the best coach ever, huh?

What we were gonna plan on doing, maybe,

was each person running it down.

Adam: Kayla's strength is in her power.

Alessandra... she's got
a lot of amazing precision.

She's got a wonderful sound to her voice.

"Wide Awake" allows Kayla and Alessandra

to have those big pop moments

and have those elongated notes,
really duke it out.

When you open up, it's like, "whoa."

by just being perfect,

like having to just do
everything right all the time.

But if she would
just stop thinking so much

about everything,

Kayla would be in trouble.

Your voice is amazing,

but you got to believe it
for us to believe it,

because people doubt you
when you're always thinking.

Be confident in what you're doing.

Adam: Kayla just naturally
has a certain way about her

where, when she sings, she's a natural,

whereas Alessandra's more studied.

I'm just looking to see
who can keep it all together

in a very high-pressure situation.

Daly: The next day, Alessandra
and Kayla meet with Adam

for a final rehearsal before their battle.

When you do "falling from cloud nine,"

it's always a little sharp.

- If you can flatten that up a little bit.

Just come underneath it a little bit,

'cause your tendency is to go sharp,

so if you're conscious of it,
you won't go sharp.

It's such a crucial moment, I just...

really, that's got to be [clicks tongue].

In the rehearsal,
Adam told me I was a bit sharp

on, like, the last note of the chorus,

so now I have to practice
and work really hard

and, you know, see what happens.

Daly: It's time for Alessandra
and Kayla to face off.

Only one will win and move on
in the competition.

Alessandra: I have voice lessons,

so I'm kind of always, like,
worrying about being too perfect.

They're telling me not to be
so perfect, just let loose,

and I really want to prove
to Adam that I took his advice.

First, Blake Shelton,
some thoughts on that.

Blake: Okay, Alessandra,
I really enjoy that...

when your voice gets that raspy,
gravely sound...

Yeah, the grit... yeah, yeah.

...yeah, way more than I like
your softer, vibrato sound,

which is the opposite of you, Kayla.

You have this really
sweet-sounding vibrato...

- Thank you.
- ...And it's cool when you do your runs

because it's just neat how it
lays in there with what you do.

Dang, Adam.

This is a sucky one for you
because there... this is a...

I mean, I really, truly believe
this was neck and neck.

Christina: I agree.

The one thing that I can't wait
for both of you to do...

and it does come with a little
bit of age and experience...

is really tap into exactly,
uniquely who you are.

Blake mentioned the gravel in your voice,

which I think is great.

I had to work a lot of years
to get a little bit of gravel

and little bit of roughness in my voice,

and that comes with kind of being unafraid

and being able to take risks
and not everything has to be

so clean or by the book.

Like, sometimes
it's the character in something

that makes it truly special.

Kayla, that soft side of your voice

is very, very endearing,
and it's precious,

but I don't know
if that'll be a winning quality.

You know what I mean? Like, you
know, going... going forward.

In comparison,
Alessandra had more attitude,

and I believe Alessandra showcased

that she could have a softer
side and be aggressive, too.

And if I had to go with someone,

I would say Alessandra could go forward.

Daly: Pretty even between all the coaches.

Now we go to Adam. Of course,
you have the final decision.

Adam: Alessandra, you know,
we talked a lot

about the things
that Christina picked up on...

being too caught up in...
in the precision of singing

and not letting it fly.

As far as the energy on stage
and your presence...

that was there...
but vocally, for some reason,

it still felt a little bit trained.

Kayla, those particular notes
and how they're extended...

really hard to hit them,

and it's almost impossible
to avoid being sharp

and, you know, sharpening
or Fl*ttening them, really.

You know, you have the audience
yelling and screaming

and you got a little bit of nerves.

So sometimes those weren't
right on the money,

and I know you know that

'cause I know you're hard on yourself.

You both had your issues, but we all do.

Who is the winner?

Um...

Alessandra, it seemed as though

that your belief in yourself
wasn't strong enough.

I felt an insecurity from you
that made me kind of just...

to be totally honest with you...
a little bit sad.

You know, 'cause I want you
to believe in yourself

and understand how good you are.

Kayla, I'll never forget this...

when I picked you
and turned my chair around

and I came up, you know, gave you a
hug when you were coming off stage,

you pulled me aside pretty aggressively,

and you looked at me dead in the eye,

and you're like, "now, we better
win this thing, now."

And, you know...

So, believe in yourself,
but also remember to be humble.

You know, it's always good
to keep those things in mind.

has been through so much,

and for me to be able to do this
for not only myself,

but for them, and for them to be

Emily: My senior year of high school

was when I really started
playing out in coffee shops,

and when high school ended,
I decided to move to New York.

I played in the subways

and saved up as much money
as I could to go to Nashville.

It definitely was difficult at times.

Being on "The Voice"...

it would just be
such an amazing opportunity

to grow and to learn as a musician.

Daly: During the blind auditions,

Emily's performance of "Ring Of Fire"

landed her a spot on team Cee Lo.

I was interested in seeing
who this brave individual was

I think what's really important
is that your identity remains.

incorporate her style of singing.

I always play guitar or piano,

start to get the idea

of being comfortable without that prop.

It's a big part of who I am as a musician,

Blake, what did you think?

I'll just say that, brother,
you have a really good ear,

and you have a...
and you have a strong voice.

When you do too many of those
breaks in your voice,

it has a tendency just to sound squeaky.

I don't feel like you have to do that

because you're a good singer without that.

And, Miss Earle,

you have a really authentic,
country voice.

And I think you just sounded

like I would have sounded
singing that song.

You know what I mean?

But being a country guy,

I still... I can see through that.

And, you know, I'm with... I'm with Adam.

I think I would have
probably gone with Miss Earle.

Christina: Mackenzie, I almost
pressed my button for you.

You came on the show,

you had a fun energy

Couldn't see you or anything,
but then I turned around

and, you know, you played your guitar,

and you're so multi-talented.

it. You know what I'm saying?

But for the most part, being that
it was awkward for the both of you,

and I noticed the nerves

trying to let go

and... and keep your composure
at the same time...

it was a lot of mixed emotions,

and I'm suffering from
the same ordeal at the moment...

about who I should choose.
