When i first started out,

I wish there would have been
A show like this one.

The world is full
Of talented people,

But not a lot of them
Have this enormous opportunity

To showcase their talent.

For many years

Now i get the opportunity

To help somebody else

And it started with me

How amazing your voice was

And convincing you
To be on my team.

And somebody that could make
A big difference in their life,

And that's pretty exciting.

Of the blind auditions...

I could really learn a lot

Has been so much fun.

Of the day.

Jeff: my name is Jeff Lewis,
I'm 28 years old,

And i'm from Dallas, Texas.

We are at wilson & harding golf
Course, and i'm a starter here.

I book tee times and make sure
Everybody's staying on track,

And if there's a problem
On the course,

I whip these golfers into shape.

You moved out here
From Dallas.

What was the goal
To come to L.A.?

When i first moved out here,

I was actually dancing
A lot more than i was singing.

How did the music thing
Come along?

I know
You had a record deal,

Which is
A pretty amazing thing.

Yeah,
I was playing some shows.

We went in and recorded
Some songs that i wrote,

And then we just started
Showcasing to different labels.

I was lucky enough to sign
With interscope records.

We had done a small radio tour.

It was an unbelievable time.
I met unbelievable people.

It was such
An exciting, high moment

Followed by such
A frustrating roller coaster.

I was signed for about
Two and a half years.

We had almost
Finished the record,

And then, all of a sudden, Everything
just got kind of Pulled out from under me.

I ended up
Getting put on the shelf.

We shot a couple videos.
They never really got released.

It was a terrible experience.

It was so much work
To get there,

And then everything
Just kind of stopped.

What song are you gonna do
In the blind audition?

I'm doing "U Got it Bad"
by Usher.

You know,
That's a dicey move.

It is a dicey --

It either works or it bombs.
There's no gray area.

But i think i'm gonna
Switch it up enough

To where he'll be able

As an opportunity

To share with people

That no matter
If i'm 15 or i'm 45,

It's never too late to do
What you're passionate about

Or what you're called to do.

I knew i really wanted
To be a performer

When i was 8 years old,

And my mom and dad forced me
To go see Elvis Presley.

And he did
The "Space Odyssey" song.

Unbelievable.

I mean, i'm 8 years old
And i have chills all over me,

And it changed my life.

It really made me
Want to be a performer.

After college,
I moved to Nashville

And found myself performing
With the muzik mafia.

They were a network
Of people who said,

"we're gonna support one another
And write songs together."

It birthed
Gretchen Wilson's career

And big and rich.

I had the opportunity to perform
with Kid Rock,

George clinton
And the funkadelic crew,

Which was amazing.

But at a certain point,
Big and Rich got a record deal,

Gretchen got a record deal,

And we all just kind of
Went our separate ways.

And that just completely
Threw me off balance.

You're one of our more
Experienced artists on the show.

That can be
Of great benefit to you.

That's what i'm hoping.

What have i got to lose?

Nothing,
And everything to gain.

To the music scene.

I haven't really done much
With it.

I've just kind of done
Coffeehouse open mikes.

I started in high school
When i got my first guitar,

And i found myself kind of drawn
To the indie-folk genre.

Writing is really important
To me

Because it's my way of getting
Out my feelings and emotions.

This is my first time
being in L.A.,

And i feel like
A total fish out of water.

It's my freshman year
At university of kansas.

I actually had to withdraw
This semester

My dad is a doctor,

And there's two doctors
On my mom's side of the family,

So education
Is really important,

But luckily they're being
Very supportive of my music.

I am so proud of her
For making it this far,

I never would have thought
In a million years

That we'd be doing this,
And it is just amazing.

This is the biggest thing that's
Ever happened with music for me.

On a good night, about 30 people
Showed up to the coffeehouse,

So this is nuts that i'm playing
For millions of people.

I know i'm kind of over my head

But i'm hoping the coaches

Will hear a unique sound
And be intrigued.

I will probably go to college,

But i'd be really disappointed

And i'm from Wayland, Iowa.

There's a lot of different
Things that i can do.

I can sing, dance, write music,

Acting, choreography,
And i produce.

What i do now is i work for

A residential treatment facility
For adolescent kids.

The only thing
They've really seen

Is domestic violence
And negativity,

So i really wanted
To let the kids know

That you have to
sh**t for your dreams.

They're all really excited

To hear that i was going out
To l.A. To do music.

I have, like, my little own
Fan base of 7-to-12-year-olds.

They think i'm kind of a, you
Know, a little mini celebrity,

So it is pretty cool.

My aunt is supporting me.

She came from michigan,

And so, i'm really excited
To have her here.

Bea: he's just always
Been a little clown,

But then he grew
Into this performer,

And it's just awesome to see him
To bloom like a rose.

I never had any children

What do you do for a living

I'm a deputy sheriff.

How'd you get into
That line of work?

My father was a deputy sheriff
For 28 years.

My grandfather was the same.

Being a deputy sheriff,

You put the badge and the g*n
On, it's game-on time.

I remember i responded
To a disturbance call.

I engaged the suspect.

We went out a sliding-glass
Window off a second story,

And the next thing i know,
I'm on my way to urgent care.

In this job,

And i know my heart

Is always gonna be willing
To take care of business,

But i don't know how much longer

My body is gonna be able
To take this.

You're a cop, but, you know,
You look like a rock star.

I've been with my band, austin
Law, about four years now,

And we've been performing
All over the place.

Now we're playing Vegas
At treasure island.

We're there about once a month.

Who juggles a busy family life

My daughter, who is 7 years old,

And i have my new baby,

And i have my fiancé, rob.

I put my career on hold

About the idea

It was very hard for me because
Kids would make fun of me,

Grace: my name is Grace Askew,
I'm 26 years old,

And i'm born and raised
In Memphis, Tennessee.

I would describe my genre
As "bluntry."

It's a mix of blues and country.

When i was 22 years old,
I realized that i had to get out

And discover the bigger world
Outside of Memphis,

So i turned to music.

I just ended up
Packing my whole life

Into the backseat of my car

And just hit the road
For my first-ever tour.

I've toured in about 40 states.

I was doing everything --
Booking the shows.

I was making the tour posters,
I was calling radio stations,

Waking up on a couch one morning

And i'm on the floor
Another morning.

And after all these years,

I've reached a plateau
In my career,

And i can only take it so far.

Jane: i remember being,
Like, 3 years old

And standing on, like,
The fireplace in our house,

Singing songs that i had,
Like, written in my head

About, like, bugs and spiders

And stuff that, like,
Were randomly crawling around.

My dad was a singer, too,

So it was kind of
Like our bonding moment.

Like,
That was what we did together.

How long
You been singing music?

Probably since i was,
Like, 5 or 6.

So, you're pretty serious
About music, huh?

Yeah.
What inspires you?

Definitely my dad.

I was 11 when i found out
My dad had cancer,

That it spread
To his brain and his lungs.

A week later,

My mom goes to the doctor
Just for her regular checkup,

And they tell her that
She has stage-two breast cancer.


He was first diagnosed,

He passed away.

I think when
My husband passed away,

Jane used her music
And her writing

To deal with that loss.

And she...

Aww.

My mom went into remission,
So she's healthy now,

And she's doing really well,

And i'm happy
That she's my best friend.

"the voice" is a lifesaver
For me.

If it wasn't for this show,

I'd still be at home with my
Part-time job, making no money.

I'd be worried about everything,
And with this show,

It gives me an opportunity
To actually become an artist.

If the chairs
Were to turn around,

I would know that this really is
What i've been called to do,

And this is what my dad
Would have wanted me to do.

I sing every song i ever sing
For my dad and my mom.

This performance is definitely
Going all to them,

And especially my dad.

Ryan: my name is Ryan Innes,

I'm 31 years old,
And i'm from Provo, Utah.

I grew up playing piano
Since i was 4 or 5 years old.

I sang in the boys' choir.

I did everything
You possibly could musically

In the little tiny town
That i grew up in.

But i never dreamed that i'd be
An actual professional singer.

Always wanted to be
A professional musician?

No. No, i actually
Wanted to be a doctor.

No kidding?
Yeah.

I had a whole different plan
For my life.

What took you
Off that path?

I was engaged to a girl,
Love of my life.

- Right.
- And we were Gonna get married,

And we actually broke it up
About three weeks before.

That's tough.

I had the love of my life,

I had a great career,
And everything was on track.

I feel like i got the rug
Pulled out from under me.

I'd lost everything i thought
That i was gonna have.

My life had just
Kind of crumbled,

And at that point,

I decided i wasn't gonna do
Medicine anymore.

I needed to take a step back

And start to think about
What i really wanted.

And i decided that, "you got
To try this music thing.

You're gonna regret it
If you never give it a shot."

That's totally different.
Totally.

From doctor to playing...
Yeah.

It's always not easy trying
To make a living of music.

How's that been?

It's been a struggle.

I'm a lounge singer,
And then i do corporate gigs.

I do weddings.

I do everything you can
With music to make money.

Looking for the next level.
Definitely.

I think you're at
The right place.

If i would have
Stuck with my plan,

Music wouldn't be
An essential part of my life.

The opportunities to have grown
