The first thought
That goes through my mind
Is hitting that button
As quickly as i can.
?do what you feel now
You have to hear accomplished.
You have to hear experience.
You have to hear conviction.
Literally, in a very
Short amount of time, you have to hear it all.
It's like lightning was striking
When you did certain things.
I want to win with you.
You get invested,
And you get excited
Because you're impacting
Someone else's life,
And it makes us care
That much more.
Please tell me
What i can do
To make you choose
Me as your coach.
You saying that to me --
That's enough.
What do you got?
It's important
To create a great team.
We're looking for really
Special things that move us,
And it's a really fun journey
To be on.
Welcome to "the voice."
With the blind auditions
More than halfway complete,
Each coach
Has a diverse team of artists
That reflect their taste.
Here's what happened last night.
I choose christina.
Whoo!
Christina landed four
Incredible artists for her team,
Bringing her total to eight.
This year, i'm just looking
For the "wow" factor.
Adam.
Adam picked up two artists,
Bringing his total to seven.
I'm waiting to hear something
That forces me
To push my button.
Cee lo.
Cee lo scored three artists,
Giving him seven overall.
I've got a team
Full of soldiers.
I most certainly think
I have the best team.
Blake!
Yes!
And blake grabbed three singers,
Also bringing his total
To seven.
What i'm looking for is
Someone who has a clear vision
Of who they want to be
As an artist.
This is "the voice"!
Tonight, their search continues.
?mind
For the artists,
It's a chance of a lifetime.
I'm gonna sing my heart out.
I'm hoping that all four
Of those chairs turn.
Being able to work with
One of these four heavy hitters
In the music industry
Could be a game changer.
And for one,
It's a shot at redemption.
The support that i got
From the people
Who watched the show
Was definitely a reason
To come back and try it again.
With only a few spots left,
The artists will have
To give it all they've got...
?bye-bye
I want you on my team!
Your voice
Just overtook the room.
Do you sing for a living?
You do now.
...because only one
Will win it all --
A recording contract
With universal music group
And be named the voice.
Aah!
I can't think of one thing that wasn't spectacular
About that performance.
I don't want to lose out
On something that i want.
I love you.
Oh, my god!
Can i get a turn to speak?
The blind auditions
Continue right now.
It's night 4
Of the blind auditions.
Blake shelton,
You're a dead man.
You're dead where you stand.
Somebody actually left
The door open for me here.
Ready to take my seat.
Get in that chair
And give it to the boys.
Captain, commander-in-chief
Of team cee lo green.
I'll show you
How to do this, son.
As our coaches get ready,
Let's go meet
Our first artist of the night.
I am
In sherman oaks, california,
On my way to meet
Our next artist, will champlin,
Who's hoping to follow in
His famous father's footsteps.
I'm over
At my dad's house right now.
He's got his studio set up.
He was a member of the
Legendary rock group chicago.
?hold me now
?it's hard for me
To say i'm sorry ?
He played organ,
Keys, guitar, and vocals
In a couple
Of their number-one hits.
?...to stay
How influenced
By your dad's career
Were you growing up?
Even though
I was an early age,
It was very inspiring
To be able to go backstage.
That probably contributed
To me
Having such a great ear
As a musician.
They didn't have "the voice"
When you were coming up.
How do you think
This opportunity is gonna be for will?
You got to look at the business
At this point in the game.
There's -- visibility
Has always been the thing
That you got to have
At some level,
And it's getting harder
And harder to get that.
I mean, some
Of the songs he's written
Are absolutely gorgeous.
And i'm really, really proud
Of him.
I think it's good timing
Right now, so...
It's definitely hard
To chase a dream like this.
I've always been
A working musician.
I've played cover gigs,
Corporate gigs, session work.
Now i have a wife and daughter,
And i really would like
To provide for them
In a much bigger way.
My wife, rosanne,
And our daughter, harper,
Mean the most to me.
Want to throw the ball?
Yay!
Yeah!
It means a lot for me
To succeed on a show like this,
Not only for my sake,
But for their sake.
And if it doesn't happen,
I mean, then it doesn't happen,
But we're keeping
Our hope alive.
Growing up,
Seeing my dad do his thing
While people were screaming
And cheering was incredible.
But i definitely went
My own path,
And i've tried to carve my own
Artistry and my own person here
Because it's important to me
To make it on my own.
Have a great show.
I take one good look
At my daughter,
I realize this is literally
The most important performance
Of my life.
This is a game changer.
I'm gonna do everything i can
To -- to make it a game changer.
Being able to work with one
Of these four heavy hitters
In the music industry...
Good luck.
...they will help me become the
Artist that i want to become.
Come on, will.
That's your dad,
Harper.
Say "hi, daddy."
Intro to "not over you"
?dreams,
That's where i have to go ?
?to see your beautiful face
Anymore ?
?i stare at a picture of you
And listen to the radio ?
?hope,
Hope there's a conversation ?
?we both admit we had it good
?'cause until then,
It's alienation ?
?i know
That much is understood ?
?and i realize
?if you ask me how i'm doin'
?i would say
I'm doin' just fine ?
?i would lie
Come on. come on, guys.
Come on, cee lo. oh, come on.
?you're not on my mind
?no
?but i go out, and i sit down
At a table set for two ?
?and finally i'm forced
To face the truth ?
?yeah
?no matter what i say,
I'm not over you ?
?if you ask me how i'm doing
Yeah, blake!
Blake shelton.
?i would say
I'm doing just fine ?
?i would lie
There's your dad.
?and say
That you're not on my mind ?
?but i go out, and i sit down
At a table set for two ?
Oh, man!
?and finally i'm forced
To face the truth ?
?yeah, no matter what i say,
I'm not over you ?
Thank you.
Whoo!
Yo!
What's up, man?
What's your name?
Will champlin.
Nice to meet you.
Will, what's happening?
I like those glasses.
Oh, thank you, man.
Appreciate it.
You have
A really incredible voice, bro.
Like, really good.
Thank you, man.
That means a lot
Coming from you.
Really good.
Appreciate it.
I can't think of one thing
That wasn't spectacular
About that performance.
That was incredible.
I agree.
And, dude, i don't know.
I have this really kind of
Amazing feeling about you.
AND IF THE GAVIN DeGRAW CHOICE
Reflects any sort of taste,
I know
About that kind of stuff.
Definitely.
And i would love
To help you out, man,
'cause i think
You're a real talented guy.
Thank you, man.
Appreciate it.
Will, how long
Have you been doing music?
All my life.
I grew up
In a musical family.
Where you guys from?
L.a.
Actually from here.
Okay. nice.
Me too.
Yeah. i lived a couple years
In nashville, too,
But i'm back here now,
So...
Only a couple years,
And most of your time in l.a.
Yeah, mostly here.
Not atlanta, not oklahoma --
L.a.
Exactly.
What i admire
Most importantly
Is a person and an artist
With a plan of their own,
And each turnaround
Signifies an interest in you,
And if that feeling
Is reciprocated, man,
And i'm speaking for myself,
I'd love to have you
On my team, as well.
Thank you, man.
Appreciate that.
Hey, will.
Hey, blake.
How you doing?
I love you.
Thank you, man.
Well...
Right back at you, man.
Man, i tell you what.
That was
Just some powerful singing
With a lot of passion
And great pocket
And great pitch.
And then turn around,
And you got a cool style,
Cool hairdo...
Thank you.
...cool glasses,
Got the suspenders on.
You sing your a*s off.
That's probably why you have
To wear suspenders --
To hold your jeans on.
Man, i tell you what.
I think you and i could --
Could win this thing together.
No question about it.
No, man.
It's a tough competition
Up here.
I saw him go,
Then i saw these two guys go,
And i was like, "man,
I'm just gonna let them
Duke it out on this one."
And so, you're in great hands
Either way you go.
All right.
This is a very tough choice.
I'm gonna go with my gut
On this.
First of all,
I think it's an honor
That you guys appreciate
What i'm doing here.
But i know
I got to make a choice
Just like you guys
Got to make a choice,
And it's a tough thing to do,
But...
Um...
Adam.
?i'm at pay phone
Trying to call home ?
?all of my change...
Ah! yes!
Yes, bro.
You're -- you're
A good guy, man,
And you're super-talented.
I can't wait to see
What we do together.
Right on, bro.
?where are
The plans we made... ?
Thank you.
That guy's good.
People are gonna love him.
Will's a bad-a*s.
As his performance progressed,
He just got
More and more intense
And in a really cool way,
So i'm very psyched
On this dude.
He reminds me
Of, like, a male version
Of, like,
Michelle chamuel. yeah. yeah, yeah.
Yay, daddy!
WHOO-HOO! Daly: CONGRATULATIONS, WILL.
Congratulations,
Rock star. oh!
Oh, there's your daddy.
That's a big hug.
Yeah.
Congratulations, man. congratulations.
And they both turned around.
What's up, brother?
Hey, carson.
What made you
Go with adam?
I just felt more
Of a connection with adam.
Doesn't that feel good? they
Did it just based on your --
They don't know anything
About your family.
No.
They just did it 'cause you just sang the hell
Out
OF THAT GAVIN DeGRAW SONG. YEAH.
Great job.
Coming up,
A young hip-hop artist...
I did write a rap
About coming on "the voice."
...surprises our coaches.
That rapping was good.
It sure was.
Yeah, that was hot.
And later...
The competition
Is just getting started... what?
...as the artists
Give everything they've got...
?inside of your eyes
...to make a team.
Aah!
Yes!
Welcome back to "the voice."¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿
Up next, an artist
Who's ready to make a change.
My name is macey estes.
I'm 18 years old,
And i'm from greenwood, indiana.
I've had music around me
My entire life.
My mom sings.
My sister sings.
But i was really shy,
So i would sing and dance
By myself in my room
Because i never felt like it was
Something that i was good at.
But my older sister
Was in show choir,
And i watched her,
During her four years
Of high school, perform,
And i decided
That it was something
That i would love doing,
As well.
In show choir, we sing and dance
At the same time,
But i never felt like
It was exactly who i was.
I have this other side that
Is just dying to come out of me.
I've always loved hip-hop
Dancing, and i want to sing pop.
I even like to rap.
I just graduated high school.
Show choir's over.
It's my time to do what i love.
We're gonna be backstage
Just like, "aah!"
I'm gonna be onstage,
"aah!"
My parents have been
Really supportive
In my decision
To not go to college yet,
So getting on a team
Would finally validate
That i am good at what i do
And that i have
A potential career.
You're gonna k*ll it
Out there.
"the voice"
Is the thing that i need
To jump-start my music career.
Being in the show choir
And doing musical theater,
It's not who i am.
But the hip-hop
And the pop and the rap side --
That's just me.
I'm really excited
To have the four originals back.
I think, for my voice style,
The best coach for me is christina.
She's my girl.
And i'm gonna go out there,
And i'm gonna show those coaches
That i'm different and i'm
Unique from anybody else here.
I have nothing to hold me back.
It's my time to do what i've
Wanted to do my entire life.
Ooh!
Look at her.
Right there. oh!
Look at her.
?what we're gonna do right here
Is go back ?
?back to the time
?i love the way
You make me feel ?
?love, love it
?i love the way
You make me feel ?
?oh
Let's go!
?you give me
That kind of something ?
?want it all the time,
Need it every day ?
?stay by your side,
I'll never leave ya ?
?and i ain't going nowhere
'cause you're a keeper ?
?ooh-ooh-ooh ooh-ooh
?i love the way
You make me feel ?
?i love the way
?baby, i love the way
?ooh, i love the way
Come on.
Hit it!
?you got my heart
?don't know how you did it
?and i don't care
Who sees it, babe ?
?i don't want to hide the way
I feel when you're next to me ? 422 00:18: 00:18:19,664 ?oh-oh oh-oh
?baby, i love the way
You make me feel ?
?ooh, i love it
?oh-oh-oh oh, oh, oh
Hey!
?ooh-hoo-hoo
?i lo-o-o-ve the way
You make me feel ?
?the way you love me
No!
Hi, darling.
Hi. how are you?
What's your name?
Macey.
Where you from,
Macey?
Greenwood, indiana.
How old are you?
I'm 18.
The first thing i told blake
When you started singing was,
"she's young," 'cause you
Could hear a youthfulness,
But a lot
Of potential, man.
Sometimes what keeps us
From pushing
Is hearing the potential,
But not feeling confident
Enough to move forward.
You know, i do agree.
I think
I was just looking
For
An extra-special moment.
Yes, you had those,
You know...
?ah, ah-ah, ah-ah
Those little dips
And stuff.
But there was one note
I really wanted you to hit.
?ah-ah-ah ha ah
That's the note i was really
Looking for, up there. that's good.
And that just takes time
To, like, just sort of...
She's good.
..."okay. how can i take it one step further?"
I think you can go there
If you push yourself
Just a little bit more.
Okay. thank you.
Yes.
What kind of artist
Do you see yourself as?
Like pop, r&b.
I rap a little bit.
Really?
I'd like to hear you rap.
Well, i did write a rap
About coming on "the voice."
Ooh.
Can we hear it?
Okay.
?n.y.c. to l.a.
?austin, a.t.l., chicago
?all these singers up in here
For the very same goal ?
?we got one shot,
One song, one rhyme ?
?these 90 seconds right here
?this is our one and only time,
Yeah ?
?so, i said,
"i want to be the voice" ?
?battle rounds, knockouts,
To america's choice ?
?this right here is my dream,
A great opportunity ?
?right here on "the voice"
?my time to finally be me
Whoo!
Aww!
That was awesome.
Keep rapping.
That rapping was good.
It sure was.
Yeah, that was hot. i like that.
The things that you're good at,
You're really good at,
And the reason
I didn't hit my button
Is because of that thing
That christina did
That you didn't do,
And those are gonna be
The ones
That break out of the pack.
Stay confident.
That's the most important thing.
Thank you guys so much.
You guys are awesome.
Keep rapping.
Aww.
I would so not sound
As cool as you.
I wish i could do that.
I really wanted
To be on the show.
I wanted to be on a team
And make it farther,
But i guess i just didn't have
What it takes this year.
I'm grateful that christina
Gave me a lot of good feedback
And that she hugged me
'cause i love her so much.
Macey had a really cool voice,
But maybe next time
I'm looking for a little bit
Less of a safe approach.
Whoo!
Sorry, babe.
It's okay, baby.
Proud of you.
You did great.
Mm.
I couldn't be
More prouder of you.
Coming up, christina
Gets her own pep talk from our coaches.
I don't play guitar.
You're
Christina freakin' aguilera.
Who gives a crap?
See? that's why i came back
To this show.
I love these boys.
Welcome back to night 4¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿
Of the blind auditions. ?this is "the voice"
Let's meet our next artist,
Stephanie anne johnson.
I was always singing
In the house when i was little.
My whole family was instrumental
In introducing me
To different styles of music.
A lot of soul music,
Classic rock.
My grandmother
Played blues on the weekdays
And then gospel on sundays.
Yep, that's my stephie.
She loves music.
And we're proud of her,
Too.
In high school
And through college,
I studied classical voice.
I studied opera.
The thing that i really,
Really love about classical voice
Is the freedom that it gives me.
I can relax and just sing.
But after college,
I had no idea what to do.
I was working at a daycare,
And i just wanted to sing,
So i got a job working
On a cruise ship in alaska.
That means i live and work
On cruise ships,
And i play guitar for about
Four or five hours a day.
Welcome to the lounge.
Please come up to me and tell me
What songs you like.
I love to take requests.
Playing music
Is my most favorite thing to do,
So getting to do it every night,
Make new friends,
You learn new songs,
And you grow as a musician
Quite a lot.
And it's really, really amazing.
But the thing is, i am at sea
Eight months out of the year.
So i miss everything.
I miss christmas, i miss
My friends getting married,
And i really do miss
My family a lot.
I miss being a part
Of their lives.
I'm ready to get back on land.
I just never dreamed
Of this.
My stephie
On "the voice"!
And the whole world
Is going to hear her.
Oh, how wonderful!
How wonderful!
I am so excited.
Mm-mm!
Oh, good luck.
Good luck.
Thank you.
Do it.
Okay.
In the last three years,
I've given
Over a thousand performances
In a bunch
Of different countries,
But none of them compare
To what's about to happen today.
The thing
I really love about "the voice"
Is that no one sees your face or
What your body might look like
Until they've
Already heard you sing,
So it really has more to do
With merit rather than looks.
This is about taking care
Of the people
Who did everything
In their power
To make sure that i got
To do what i wanted to do,
Which was sing.
This is my moment,
And i'm gonna go out there
And make the most of it.
There she is.
Here she comes. there she is.
Whoo-hoo!
Yay, stephie!
Yay!
Oh, yay, stephie!
Give it to 'em, baby.
Intro to "black horse
?well, my heart knows me better
Than i know myself ?
?so i'm gonna let it
Do all the talking ?
?well, i came across a place
In the middle of nowhere ?
?with a big black horse
And a cherry tree ?
Yeah.
?then that big black horse
Said, "look this way" ?
?i said, "hey, there, baby,
Will you marry me?" ?
?ooh-hoo-hoo
?ooh-hoo
?and i said, "no, no"
?no, no, no, no
?i said, "no, no"
?you're not the one for me
?and my heart hit a problem
In the early hours ?
?so i stopped it dead
For a beat or two ?
?ooh-ooh ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
?say, ooh-ooh ooh-ooh
?but i cut some chord,
And i shouldn't have done it ? 645 00:29: 00:29:04,342 ?and it won't forgive me after all these years ?
?ooh-ooh-ooh
Blake!
?say, ooh-ooh ooh-ooh
Come on.
?and i said, "no, no"
Yeah!
?no, no, no, no
?i said, "no, no"
?you're not the one
For me-e-e-e-e ?
?no, no
Whoo-hoo!
Yes! yes!
?no, no, no
?i said, "no, no"
?you're not the one for
?big black horse and a --
And a cherry tree ?
?said, but i can't
Quite get there ?
?'cause my heart's forsaken
?heart's forsaken me
Oww!
Yeah!
All right, girl.
Nice.
What's your name,
Sweetheart?
My name
Is stephanie anne johnson.
Stephanie anne johnson.
How you feeling?
I'm feeling real good.
You got to be feeling --
You got to be.
You could feel the attitude
All the way through the chairs,
Slapped me
Right in the face.
Yeah, man.
You're
Such a pleasant surprise.
I can't believe that that was
You singing that record.
Do you sing
Professional? i do.
I work on cruise ships.
I'm a lounge singer.
Really?
Oh!
Yeah.
What kind of artist
Do you want to be?
Indie soul music.
I want to make
Blues and soul music. okay.
When you say indie soul music,
It's like
I heard
Soul and conviction.
Yeah.
You know what i mean?
Thank you.
And it was -- yeah.
Thank you.
And it's like church,
If you will.
Yes.
Right?
Hello.
Okay.
So, i kind of saw
Vicci martinez from season one.
Yeah.
We went to high school together.
Really?
Yep.
That's what they call
Serendipity.
Oh, my gosh.
And we got her all the way to second place
That first season, so...
Stephanie Anne: YEAH.
Like, maybe we can take you all the way to number one
And win this thing.
Yeah.
Oh, my god!
Geez!
Can i get a turn to speak?
I was really taken
With the energy
That you put out there,
And it just moved me.
I looked over at cee lo,
He looked over at me,
And we were like,
"yeah, yeah,
Let's -- let's go in on it,"
So...
We both had that face
Like, "mm!"
I know! i know.
We were both feeling it.
You came alive,
You woke us up,
And we pushed our buttons,
And, you know, i...
I don't play guitar.
I'm not a musician
In that sense,
But i know
How to use my instrument. yes, you are.
You are definitely a musician.
You kidding me?
Oh, adam.
She's being modest, man.
I know.
You're making me bashful.
No, i wish
I knew how to play.
You're
Christina freakin' aguilera.
Who gives a crap?
Yeah.
Aww.
Yeah.
Thanks, guys.
See? that's why i came
Back to this show.
I love these boys.
Can i -- you mind
If i chime in here, though?
Can i say something?
Please.
You got to pick
A coach, girl.
All right.
Um...
You haven't had a winner yet.
And we're gonna fix that.
I want christina.
Oh!
Yes! yes!
I mean, christina aguilera,
Like, falls in the line
With people like whitney houston
And mariah carey.
I think we can both
Really learn some things
From each other.
I'm really, really excited
To see, like, what kind of magic
Happens with this.
Yeah!
Whoo!
That was fun.
Stephanie's very assured
Of herself.
She seemed to know
What she wanted to do.
She had
A very artistic perspective.
It took me by surprise.
That's gonna surprise
Everybody, that girl.
I'm telling you right now.
Look who i found.
Yay!
Mom!
I feel like i just got off
A roller coaster, you know?
It's really, really exciting.
It's the most
Exciting thing ever.
Yeah!
Christina!
Yes!
Coming up...
Whoo!
Oh, man!
...an artist brings out
Cee lo's competitive side.
I'm gonna fight you.
Are you mad at me?
I love you,
But i'm gonna fight you.
Welcome back¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿
To the blind auditions. ?this is "the voice"
Next up, a midwestern artist
With a heart of gold.
My name is sam cerniglia.
I live in chicago, illinois,
And i currently work
In customer service for groupon.
I also have my own band.
We do weddings, corporate
Events, private parties.
Doing our best to kind of
Make it doing what we love.
There was a period
Where i doubted
I could have a music career,
But my family is just amazing,
And they support me in that.
If i could, in one word,
Encapsulate my family,
It would be "love."
I have a couple sisters.
My younger sister sophia
And my older sister emmy
Have two very different
But both very serious diseases.
Sophia's afflicted
With a genetic disease
Called cystic fibrosis.
My older sister emmy,
She has batten's disease,
And basically,
Her brain is shrinking,
And they can't stop it.
This disease, for her,
Is just taking her abilities
Slowly, one by one.
Emmy was integral in encouraging
Me to keep pushing through.
She really believed in my voice

One day at a time.

To offer some support.
I got a little something
I want to show you, too.
Hi, sam.
It's mom and emmy.
We wanted to take
The opportunity
To wish you luck
On your audition
And to tell you
That we wish we could be there,
But you understand
Why we're not.
And just go out there
And do your very, very best.
We love you, son.
I love you, sam.
You're the best!

That was pretty awesome.
Thank you.
Get a chair to turn,
Will you?
Yes! absolutely.
All right. nice to meet you.
For me to win "the voice,"
It would mean
A musical future for me,
This dream that i've had.
It would mean the world

And encouraged me
To follow that.

To get to "the voice" stage.
My name is jennifer newberry.
I'm 32 years old.
I'm from sweden, but i'm
Currently living in seattle.
To make a long story short,
My dad was an exchange student
In sweden,
And that's where he met my mom.
And they separated, and
I moved with my mom to sweden.
I would go every summer
To visit my dad in the states,
And i always kind of felt like
I didn't really fit in anywhere.
I was kind of in the middle.
I was not quite swedish
And not quite american,
But i connected to america
Through music.
I remember listening
To mariah carey
And christina aguilera.
I thought,
"that's what i want to do."
So, when i was 21 years old,
I took $300 and moved
From sweden to seattle.
It was really,
Really, really tough.
I would sing in the casinos.
You sort of get lost in there
Because people are gambling,
People are drunk.
They're not really listening
To you.
That's definitely not rewarding,
And it gets really draining.
I came here

My name

Hi, jennifer.

An accent of some sort.
Where you from?
I'm originally from sweden.
Well, you're beautiful.
That's for damn sure.
Well, thank you.
Hey.
I was --
I was thinking to myself,
And i wasn't even

So critical about your voice
Because you sounded great.
I love your tone.
I like that -- that breathiness
In your voice.
She has a great voice.
She does.
You have a great voice.
You started off really strong.
There were some things with
Some of the notes, pitch-wise,
But i don't think
Anybody in this room

Whoo!
Thank you!
Thank you.
I'm excited about this!
It's gonna be so much fun.
That's what it's about,
You know?
She's like barbie.
I'm open to anything and
Everything that motivates me,
And this season,
I'm embracing a little country.
Attagirl.
Thank you.
You know,
When a country artist
Makes it
Onto someone else's team,
That's scary to me
Because i never want to be
The country guy on the show
That lets one get by me.
Those dimples
Are gonna win over america.
Aah!
Whoo!
Yeah!
This is the best contest
I've ever won.
Coming up,
A last-minute button push...
Oh!
What?!
...brings out the fight
In our coaches.
I don't want to lose out
On something that i want. you know what i mean?
That was cold-blooded!
Whoo-hoo!
And later,
An incredible performance
Gets all four coaches' chairs
To turn.
Your voice cuts like a razor
Through this entire place.
I mean, your pitch
Is amazing.
Like, you know, like,
It felt really good to me.
Go with your heart.
Welcome back¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿
To the blind auditions.
Let's take a look
At our next artist,
Who hopes to rock the coaches
Right out of their chairs.
My name's jason kertson.
I'm 16 years old, and
I'm from seattle, washington.
When i was 7 years old,
I got into some sort of trouble
At school,
And i got grounded
For three weeks,
And basically, with that time,
I just decided to have my dad
Teach me how to play guitar.
I became really obsessed,
Started realizing
That i loved to sing, as well,
And so doing both
Kind of became a huge passion.
I was bored, and i just decided
To experiment with playing
Two guitars at once.
I POSTED THE VIDEO ON YouTube,
And after i put it up,
It started getting
A lot of attention,
And i really did not expect that
To happen.
How did you start
To get your music out there?
I PUT UP YouTube VIDEOS.
How did that go?
Dave mustaine of megadeth,
He saw the video,
Reached out to me, and --
He did?
Yeah.
What did he say to you?
He just said that he was
Interested in working with me
And helping me kind of
Better myself as a musician. that's amazing.
I realized that jason
Was a really gifted musician
When he was 9
And he surpassed my abilities
On the guitar.
He has
A really deep and good voice,
And i'm just really proud
Of him.
He's -- he's a great kid.
I'm here
Because i'd love the opportunity
To be mentored
By one of those coaches.
Each of them
Have different techniques
That they themselves use,
So i think that they can
Help me expand my range
In my singing voice.
I'm more of a rock guy
With a little bit of a grittier
Voice than some people,
And so i hope
That they can hear that
And think
That they can work with it.
Let's do it.
I got 90 seconds
To make my dream come true,
So i'm gonna go out there
And sing my heart out.
There he is.
Ha ha!
Oh, go, honey.
Intro to "lips of an angel"
?honey,
Why you calling me so late? ?
?it's kind of hard
To talk right now ?
?well,
My girl's in the next room ?
?sometimes i wish she was you
?i guess
We never really moved on ?
?it's really good to hear
Your voice saying my name ?
?it sounds so sweet
Come on, adam.
?coming from the lips
Of an angel ?
?hearing those words,
It makes me weak ?
?and i
?never want to say goodbye
?but, girl, you make it hard
To be faithful ?
?with the lips of an angel
?oh, whoa, oh, whoa
?but, girl, you make it hard
To be faithful ?
?with the lips of an angel
?honey,
Why you calling me so late? ? 1830 01:25: 01:25:47,328
Oh, man.
That's not what i thought
You were gonna look like at all.
What's your name?
My name is jason kertson.
How old are you?
I'm 16 years old.
Whoa!
Man.
It makes me feel like less of a man
To know
That there's a 16-year-old
That sounds like more of a man
Than i ever will.
It was powerful singing
At the beginning,
And you got us all thinking
About pushing our buttons,
But you didn't give us
A good enough reason
To go on with that.
I think a lot of us
Are just looking for something
To just
Totally blow us away.
Yeah.
You're 16, dude.
You know, over the years,
I started off really
Out of control vocally,
And i'm still working on it
All the time,
So i think you just got
To take what we're gonna say
And go back
To the drawing board
And then come back here,
Man.
Thank you.
I appreciate it. yeah.
And, um...
Oh, christina.
I'm sorry. hi.
You're so beautiful.
Oh, honey.
Thank you.
You're so cute.
I knew
You were a cutie pie
'cause i saw
All the girls jump up.
But first of all,
I can't believe
You're that great of a singer
With that much maturity
And tone, and you're 16.
Like,
That is amazing to me.
Thank you.
And, yeah, no.
Because i was a very young
Singer starting out myself,
Always in competitions.
You win some,
And sometimes you lose some,
But you're a greater and
A better artist because of it.
Move forward from here
And come back
Stronger than before.
Thank you.
Jason's voice is so mature.
I thought
We were gonna turn around
And see this big, burly
Bearded guy up there singing,
Not that kid,
Which makes him even cooler.
There's something special
About that guy.
I really hope he comes back.
I'm a little
Disappointed, you know,
But i'm so grateful that i was
Able to even get to this point.
I love you, man.
That was awesome. thanks, dad.
I'm gonna keep working
On my voice
And take what they said
And, you know, roll with it.
Coming up, a family man...
This performance today
Is for my wife and my girls.
...delivers
An emotional performance.
?world's gonna know your name
Oh!
Whoo!
Welcome back to night 4¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿
Of the blind auditions.
Let's see if our next artist
Can grab the coaches' attention.
My name is r. anthony.
I'm 33 years old,
And i'm from tampa, florida.
I have two brothers
And three sisters,
And i was the quiet kid
Out of everybody.
I just felt like
I didn't fit in.
When i moved down to tampa
For college,
I moved in with my big brother.
Then my best friend moved down,
And we formed
This up-and-coming gospel trio.
We just gigged everywhere.
It was phenomenal.
But then i got married,
And eventually, my wife
Ended up getting pregnant.
With a baby on the way, i knew
I had to just close down shop.
I just needed
To focus on family.
He was singing with a group.
And he put that on hold...
To be with the family,
And i'm so very proud of him.
I got a real job.
I was working
At a customer-service position,
And i got promoted to trainer,
Which actually helped me
Speak professionally
In front of people.
And that's just what my life was
Until that one moment,
My wife was like,
"i think it's time for you
To get back out there."
I was like, "are you sure?
Can i go?"
I was like a kid
In a candy store.
I know that this is --
This is what he was sent here
To do --
To touch lives
Through singing.
And i just need somebody
To turn the chair around.
Just turn the chair around.
I love you, daddy, and do
The best you can on that stage.
Yeah.
Yes, i will.
This is it.
Are you excited?
Girls,
Are y'all excited?
This performance today
Is for my wife...
...and my girls.
Whether i get a chair turned
Or not,
I'm gonna be celebrated
By my family,
So i'm -- i'm going in,
And i'm not coming home a loser.
I am so pumped to have
These original coaches back.
To work
With any of these coaches
Would be
A phenomenal opportunity.
This is like
A once-in-a-lifetime deal,
And i'm stoked.
It's like my first major step
Towards just being out there --
You know, being open
And being a solo act,
And that's why today
Is so important.
Oh, there he goes.
There he goes.
Intro to "hall of fame"
?yeah,
You can be the greatest ?
?you can be the best
?you can be the king kong
Bangin' on your chest ?
?you can beat the world
?you could win the w*r
?you can talk to god,
Go bangin' on his door ?
?you can throw your hands up
?you can beat the clock
?you can move a mountain,
You can break rocks ?
Turn the chair around,
Somebody!
Come on, christina!
Turn it around!
Turn around, cee lo!
Turn around!
All right, blake.
?standing in the hall of fame
Whoo!
?oh-oh
?and the world
Is gonna know your name ?
?oh-oh-oh whoa
?'cause you burn
With the brightest flame ?
?oh, whoa-oh-oh
?and the world's
Gonna know your name ?
?and you'll be on the walls
Of the hall of fame ?
?be students, be teachers
?politicians,
Be preachers, yeah ?
?be believers, be leaders
?astronauts, be champions
?standing in the hall of fame
Whoo!
?oh, oh
?and the world's
Gonna know your name ?
?oh, whoa
?oh-oh-oh oh-oh-oh
?'cause you burn
With the brightest flame ?
?oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
?and the world's
Gonna know your name ?
?oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
?yeah
Oh!
What?!
Whoo!
That was cold-blooded!
Man!
What's your name?
My name is renard.
R. anthony is what i go by.
How long
Have you been singing?
Probably the last 10 years.
I was in a gospel trio.
Yeah,
Your gospel upbringing --
That must be that compelling
Quality in your voice.
Yeah. born and raised
In the church, man.
Still in the church.
Okay. first,
I'll -- i'll start
By saying
I believed in you.
You know,
I-i really listened, and...
I mean, you know.
I love soul,
And i love runs,
And when someone
Can do them really well,
I-i love it.
Wow.
I get into that.
I think you know that.
I mean,
I want you on my team!
I really, really do.
I loved
Your performance, man.
And i didn't wait
Till the last minute
Because i wasn't sure
Of that.
I just wanted
To experience it.
Know what i mean?
Like, you know, like,
It felt really good to me.
And i just don't want to --
I don't want to lose out
On something that i want.
Know what i mean?
Yeah.
You got a tough decision
To make.
Oh, my gosh.
Uh.
Um...
Uhh.
Go with your heart.
I am going to pick...
...my man, cee lo.
Good.
Wow.
Come on over!
Ha!
I hit my button
At the last minute.
I was compelled
Listening to r. anthony
Because his voice is dynamic,
And i'm glad he's on my team.
Yeah!
Cee lo packed a 1-2 punch on me
With that one.
He had a lot of conviction
In what he said to anthony,
And i knew that one was
Gonna slip through my fingers.
I've always felt
Like the underdog,
And now my daughters get to see
Me do something so amazing.
Oh, my boo, my boo.
Oh.
This is what i wanted!
Cee lo finally picked up
His first artist of the night
And continued his lucky streak
By also scoring
Smooth-sounding keaira lashae.
?strumming my pain
With his fingers ?
You're gonna do
Just fine here.
Welcome home.
Thank you so much.
But he wasn't the only
Coach to find great talent.
Christina went on
To claim 17-year-old r&b
Sensation amber nicole.
?you can see my heart beating
I get excited
About talent like you.
I'm a little envious
Of your range.
And blake scored
Singer emily randolph.
?every rose has its thorn
That was a rock song,
But she's country.
Coming up...
A cowboy from alabama
Lights up the stage.
He's more country
Than you are, man.
That's saying a lot.
I'm inbred and everything.
And later...
...all four coaches go in
On the performance of the night.
You need to pursue this dream,
No matter who you go with.
But i hope...
...that it's with me.
Welcome back¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿
To the blind auditions.
Let's see if this country artist
Has what it takes
To charm his way onto a team.
My name's justin chain.
I'm 23 years old, and i'm
From fort payne, alabama.
I grew up with my mom and dad
Singing all the time,
And it just kind of become a
Habit for me to sing with them.
I'd sing at talent shows
At school.
I had a little band, you know,
Me and my friend started.
That's what i wanted to do.
But you need a demo
To get started,
And that was
Just too much money.
That was kind of
Out of our budget at the time,
So i just focused on sports,
And it wasn't near as expensive
As trying to be
A famous music singer.
Tell me a little bit
About your music career.
Was music your first love?
I've been singing since
As far back as i can remember.
But it hadn't always been
My main focus.
Through middle school
And high school,
Sports were more my thing.
Thinking about going
To school or...
Yeah, actually.
My plan was to walk on
At alabama to play football.
Wow. what happened?
And i was involved
In a really bad
Motorcycle accident.
Oh, no.
And that kind of changed everything.
On october 4, 2008,
I was riding a motorcycle,
And i was involved in a head-on
Collision with an s.u.v.
Oh, justin,
That is no joke.
It was the equivalent
Of me riding 90 miles an hour
And her sitting still.
I flew 40 foot
From the place of impact
Before i landed.
Broke my back,
Broke my left pelvis,
Crushed my right pelvis,
Broke my right hip.
Almost 500 stitches and staples,
And i laid in bed from october
I mean, this is
A horrific accident
That, by all accounts,
Should have taken your life.
And look at you now.
I mean, you look fantastic.
Yeah. i'm back
Running and walking.
I mean,
You've defied the odds.
You must be so proud.
Oh, i am proud.
He's been an inspiration
To me.
It's been
A tough five years, and... i can imagine.
Did you have a special
Relationship with music
During this whole thing,
Though?
Yeah. music, to me,
Is one of the most powerful
Things there is anywhere.
Yeah.
So, i mean, while i was laid up,
I decided that that's
What i was supposed to do.
You know,
I could really inspire somebody.
Being able to work with any
Of the coaches on the show
Would be amazing.
They've been in it
For a long time.
Just being able
To learn that drive
And find that passion
That just keeps people going
Would just be awesome.
Because
Of what i've been through,
You know, the past four
Or five years of my life,
I take a lot of things
More serious than most people.
Had to live life
For a little while
Not knowing whether i'd wake up
The next morning.
I was given a second chance,
And i don't want to waste
The rest of my life.
Good luck.
Thank you.
Oh, he's
Got confidence.
This is good.
Oh, golly.

What's your name, man?
Justin chain.
Where you from?
Fort payne, alabama.
Well,
Congratulations, man.
Thank you.
You made it.
Yes, sir.
Idiots.
Uh, i mean,
Your pitch is amazing. thank you for that.
Do you think any one of us
Would have tried
To compete with you on that?
I almost did it.
I almost --
He's more country
Than you are, man.
We got the same shirt on.
I mean...
That's saying a lot.
I like your style.
That's nice.
I'm inbred and everything,
So that's saying a lot.
Oh, me too!
That's crazy.
We're probably related
Or something. i know. i know.
He's more country
Than you are. let's date.
Let me guess -- you
Were gonna pick blake anyway, though, right?
Unless somebody blew my mind,
Probably so.
I kind of have to.
Man...
Fort payne, huh?
That's where randy and all
The old boys are from, huh?
Yes, sir.
He's come from a good bloodline.
You ever heard
Of a band called alabama?
?oh, play me
Some mountain music ?
God, you are country.
Yeah. yeah.
Well, man, welcome.
Thank you so much.
Thank you. come shake my hand.
Oh, he's gonna shake
Blake's hand!
Congratulations, man.
Oh, thanks, brother.
All right, man.
All right.
This is probably
The biggest moment of my life.
I've been through a lot
The past few years,
And this just lets me know
That this is
What i'm supposed to be doing.
It's amazing.
I'm really surprised
I'm the only person
That turned around for justin
Because i really felt
Like he was a stud.
I think he's got a great pitch,
And he's got
Great passion and energy,
And i think
He can go a long way.
That was like
A match made in heaven.
Yeah!
Whoo!
When i saw blake's chair turn,
I about forgot
What song i was singing.
I had to really think about it
And just dig in,
And just knowing
He turned around,
That everything was okay
From that point.
It was just such a relief.
?if you ask me how i'm doin'
?i would say
I'm doin' just fine ?

Your voice

She's a great singer.

...leaving her with the biggest
Decision of her life.
It's up to you now.
Welcome back to "the voice."!¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿¡¾¡¿
As night 4 of the blind
Auditions comes to a close,
Here's how the teams
Are stacking up.
Blake added
Confident crooner sam cerniglia,
Emily randolph,
And inspirational country artist
Justin chain.
Christina won indie soul singer
Stephanie anne johnson,
Country artist olivia henken,
And 16-year-old r&b singer
Amber nicole.
Cee lo picked up
Gospel-group singer r. anthony
And soulful r&b vocalist
Keaira lashae...
While adam scored new father
And soul singer will champlin
And second-chance rock artist
James irwin.
Let's see if our final artist
Of the night,
Single mother ashley dubose,
Can land a spot
On one of our coaches' teams.
My name is ashley dubose,
And i'm 23 years old.
I live in st. paul, minnesota.
Music is my childhood dream.
My mother would make me sing
For relatives or her friends.
She was really proud of me,
So she wanted to share my gift
With the people that she knew.
Me and my three siblings
Were raised by my mother.
She did it on her own.
She set a great example.
Really taught us to work hard.
Right now, i work full time
As a programmer analyst.
Hello. corporate i.t.
This is ashley.
I spend the majority of my day
At my desk, on a computer.
I'm juggling a lot.
In addition
To working full time,
I've been a single parent
For three years.
In my sophomore year of college,
I found out i was pregnant,
And it turned out to be the
Greatest experience of my life.
Whee!
Let's do it again!
Eventually,
I finished school,
And i was able to pursue music.
Music and parenting
Is what i want to spend
The most energy and time doing,
But i'm constantly juggling
The responsibility
Of being a mother, a full-time
Worker, and a musician.
I definitely feel like
I am spreading myself thin.
Sometimes it gets hard.
And i just keep thinking,
Like, something's got to give.
Because i've been juggling
Everything for so long,
It's wearing on me.
That's why this opportunity
Is so huge.
?this is
"the voice" ?
Yeah.
You do it.
Feel like this is my time,
And i feel like i have so much
To offer through my music.
I love you.
I have to have a breakthrough
Because i don't want
To live a life
Of constantly wanting something
That's not gonna happen.
The coaches,
There's so much that they know
That i just want to
Soak up and learn
From each and every one of them.
Good luck.
I am doing this
For my daughter.
I want to be that model
So that i can show her
She can do
Whatever she puts her mind to.
?shine bright like a diamond

Whoo!
What's your name?
Ashley dubose.
Hi, ashley.
Hi.
Your voice cuts like a razor
Through this entire place.
Those are the voices that
Make it real far on the show,
So from a purely kind
Of genuine standpoint,
I can say that your voice
Just overtook the room.
It really did.
And that's why we --
That's why we turned around.
Do you --
Do you sing for a living?
No, i don't.
You do now.
What?!
No, i'm a -- a full-time
Programmer analyst.
Ooh,
And she's smart, too.
Rihanna, um...
I'm friends with her, too.
Don't say
You're friends with her. no, no, no.
At the end of the day,
She is truly
An accomplished vocalist.
She's a great singer.
And i believe that you met
Her bar on this song
And that you expounded
Upon it,
And i know
That when she does watch it,
That she will feel like,
You know, it was done a justice.
Rihanna songs
Are really challenging to do.
It's all about timing
And your tone
And making sure things don't go
Off the mark and pitch,
And i was waiting
For something to happen,
And nothing went wrong.
And i was like,
"oh, my gosh.
I'm stupid if i don't press
My button right now."
Hey,
Can i say something?
I may seem like
An unlikely choice,
But people have asked me
About winning "the voice,"
And it's a partnership,
Is all it is.
It's not about me
Forcing my agenda on anybody.
It's about making somebody
The best that they can be.
Clearly,
I've figured that out
Over the last few seasons.
Yeah, i'd like to say
One thing about that.
To -- to --
Do you mind?
Sure. go ahead.
Can i jump in?
I'm sorry.
I got to jump in for a second.
Blake has won
Three years in a row,
And i really, personally,
Would like to dethrone
Blake shelton,
And i think that you
Definitely could win.
I like that, adam.
What you did with a song
That can be really limiting
For a singer,
Didn't limit you at all,
And that blows me away,
So great job.
Oh, man.
My particular
Coaching style --
You know, it does bleed over
Into my personal life.
I have kept in contact
With almost everyone
That's ever been a part of me
Here on the show,
And so it wouldn't just be
About you being
A part of my team.
It would ultimately be you
Becoming a part of my life.
This is the beginning
Of a professional career for you.
I want to be there
At its inception
All the way down the line.
You know, rooting for you
Front row at the grammys.
I'll just say
One last thing.
I'm coming back
With the perspective
Of truly just wanting
To find someone
That had the same dreams
And the same passions
As i did
When i first started.
It's not about competitiveness
To me.
It's about doing
What you love to do.
And what a platform
For you.
Four buttons pushed.
You don't even sing
For a living.
You need to pursue this dream,
No matter who you go with.
But i hope
That it's with me.
It's up to you now.
Who do you pick
As your coach?
Well, first of all,
I thought i knew what i wanted
To do coming in here...
Uh, and...
But if i go with my gut...
I'm gonna go with adam.
?if this is a dream
Yes!
He's k*lling us!
Wow.
He's k*lling us.
?i'm alive
Thank you so, so much.
Oh.
Thank you so much.
Oh, i can't believe this.
I can't believe this.
Thank you so much.
I got another four-chair turn.
No big deal.
Ashley just forcefully took
Everyone's attention.
She's smart.
She's beautiful.
Who knew what was gonna happen
When i turned around?
But i am stoked.
?...that this is my life
I'm on "the voice,"
Team adam.
I cannot believe it.
I was thinking for sure adam,
And then a little voice
Came into my head
And said, "maybe cee lo,"
But i just went with what
I feel like was science for me,
And i chose adam.
We have the same taste in music.
Look who i found!
?whoa-oh oh-oh oh-oh
