My friends encouraged me
to take this chance
And to be on "the voice."
So i went to the first auditions
in omaha.
They liked what they heard.
Coming from a small town

When an opportunity this big

I'm 23 years old,
from tulsa, oklahoma.
My parents are originally
from zimbabwe, africa.
They came here in 1988
for further education.
Between my mom and dad,
they have 10 degrees.
They've always just been
big dreamers,
And i think i inherited that,
as well.
My parents make their living
traveling in ministry.
And i've been to africa
on 10 mission trips.
The hopelessness,
it's heartbreaking.
And so i sing for them.

I want to inspire
these young people
And let them know
that your dreams do matter.

And that's when music
started getting serious.
After high school, i went
to oral roberts university,
And i was one of the main
worship leaders there.
Here we go!
Since then, i decided
to launch out as a solo artist.
I've had the opportunity
to do almost 400 events.
I am a pop singer.
I love the catchy hooks
and melodies.
I think there's only so much
that you can do
As an independent artist,
And so i'm excited to have
this amazing opportunity.

I'm 29 years old, and i'm
from los angeles, california.
My grandfather,
he's a jazz musician.
He taught jazz piano.
My grandmother helen
owned this club in hollywood
Called the anti club.
We'd be in the office, tucked
away with, like, coloring books
While the chili peppers
are onstage.
It's kind of a weird way to grow
up, but that's how we did it.
In college,
i was always singing.
I was a vocal jazz studies
major,
And that's where i met
my husband, andy grammer.
Andy and i, we were just friends
for most of college.
We wrote songs together,
and i sang backup for him,
And he would come sing with me.
But then something
sort of shifted,
And all of a sudden
he became my dude.

So, andy's career is blowing up

He's always on the road.

I always dreamt of going
to school in the states.

of opportunity.
So, i ended up at berklee
college of music in boston,

by the end of college,
"i'm gonna move to nashville."
This is my little apartment,

It's a very peaceful place

Being far away from my family,

19-year-old malik heard,
who discovered music on his own.
My parents, they come from
a very athletic background.
My mom, she went to
arizona state for basketball.
My dad was all-american
in track.
So, my family was
very sports-oriented.

excited about having a son,
And "he's gonna play football,
he's gonna run track."
I'm thankful
that they put me into sports,
Because it showed me work ethic,
it showed me how not to give up.
But my sophomore year,
I decided to move on
to something else -- music.
It was new for us.
He was really good
and provided direction for us,
And we made sure
that we were there
And made sure he got
where he needed to go.
I continued to sing in church.
I was also in a youth group
in high school.
I got to sing r&b, pop music,
and rock music.
We started to realize
he was really good
When people would come up to us
all the time --
"oh, my god, your son
is so wonderful."
It's been awesome.
Once i graduated high school,
i got a partial scholarship.
But i put the scholarship
on hold
Because i feel
being at "the voice"
Could change my life big time.
For my blind audition, i'll be
singing "chains" by nick jonas.
It's a very cool
pop and r&b record
That shows who i am
as an artist.
It's a bit of a risk
singing a very popular song,
But i plan to make it my own.
I've been watching "the voice"
for so long,
So being able to stand in front
of all four of these coaches,
It's a dream come true.

Kennesaw is an awesome place
to grow up.
It's a very homey town.
My parents both worked
at a landscaping company
Until my dad retired
from that job.
I am very close with my parents.
Both of them are in probably
my top five favorite people.
Peyton decided when she was
in first grade
That she wanted to be
a cheerleader.
I was super passionate about it.
I was gonna try
and get a scholarship
And do it
for the rest of my life
And end up being a coach
at some point.
Peyton was on a level-five,
advanced team.
They won
national championships.
Top five in the country.
Unfortunately, i tore a bunch
of ligaments in my ankle,
Which ended
my cheerleading career.
She was lost.
That's when she picked up
the guitar.
Obviously
made us very happy,
Because she found
what her true calling was.
As much as i loved
living in georgia,
There wasn't much
of a music scene there.
So i asked my parents
to move to nashville.
It was terrifying
to leave family,
But the most important thing
for us is that she's happy.
They were actually
really supportive.
And my mom works with me
every single day
On my website
and my social media.
She's basically my manager,
but she doesn't get paid.

My dad, he had to find a job
as a landscaper to support us.
I try and help to contribute
to the bills as much as i can.
Sometimes i'll make 50 bucks,

My dad works six days a week,

My name's evan taylor jones.
I'm 25,
and i am from orlando, florida.
I was born
in inglewood, california.
It was very unsafe at the time,
And so we drove all the way
across the country
And landed in east orlando near
bithlo, and that's the country.
There wasn't a gas station
around for miles,
And it was just dirt roads
and a good amount of racism.
My mother, she went through that
in inglewood.
She would always tell us
that we're more than a color,
More than
what everybody calls you.
And, uh, that stuck with me.
That meant a lot to me.
When i was 13, my mother passed
of lymphatic cancer.
She died in three months
From the date that we found out
she had cancer.
It was an unreal experience.
Coming from mom,
i know she'd be proud of you.
Thank you.
I don't even know how else
to explain that.
The more and more
I got to dig through
my mother's collection of music,
That was when i got to grieve,
And i got to understand
who she really was.
And then my stepfather,
he bought me a $75 guitar.
That was history, man.
I never put it down.
Right now, i play up and down
the state of florida
Five nights a week,
But i'm certainly ready
to take this next step.

My name is nate butler.
I'm 19, and i'm from
shamong, new jersey.
I've been around music
since i was very young.
My dad would always play
dean martin,
Tony bennett, elvis.
And then i would start singing.
When i was 10, i auditioned for
the philadelphia boys' choir.
The boys' choir performs
all around philly, new york.
We travel around the world.
I thought
it was the coolest thing.
But, you know,
a lot of kids didn't.
You get called lame and loser.
And if you hear that a lot,
it hurts.
Kids are really mean.
But...
[ sighs ]
...You know, as i got older,
that changed.
When i got to high school,
i knew a lot of people
Who were going to audition
for the freshman musical.
I just auditioned just,
you know, to be with my friends.
And i did seven shows.
I was fortunate enough
to have a lead in every one.
It was like, "wow.
This is new."
Music was one
of the coolest things to do.
We couldn't be more proud
of you.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
Every time you've had
a big performance,
You've just gone out there
and nailed it.
So you're just gonna absolutely
do the same thing.

I just graduated high school.
I currently work as a bus boy.
So getting a chair turned
could change my life.

I got a gig on friday.
Currently, i'm living at home
with my whole family.

My dad's definitely the better
musician of the two of us.
He taught me just about
everything i know.
When i was 15,
i started my first band.
Started playing solo gigs
when i was 18.
I've always wanted to do music
full time,
But around here making,
you know, a real living
Doing it is almost impossible.
So i had to find a way
to support myself.
Currently, i'm lucky enough
to co-teach music classes
For children that have suffered
Varying degrees of trauma
in their lives.
I love this job because
I get to share my passion
with kids to try and help them.
Two years ago, i was diagnosed
with lyme disease.
I was 23,
and i felt like i was 65.
My doctor said it was
one of the most severe cases
He's ever seen.
It can give you
severe heart palpitations,
Neurological disorders.
I've had a rough few years,
but i'm 25 years old.
It's really now or never
for pursuing music.
If i were to win "the voice,"
It would help me begin
my music career.
Having the opportunity
to get such good advice
From these incredibly talented
coaches
Is a priceless experience.
The coach i would choose
