And so I feel like he's
gotten used to losing.

my name is Denisha Dalton.

I'm originally from Warwick,
New York,

but I currently live in McKinney,
Texas.

When it came to music,
I've just been

kind of a hustler
since I was little.

Growing up, I created
actually two different girl groups.

I would audition these girls and
have rehearsals during recess.

I even took it far enough
to ask the principal, like,

"Oh, can we have the concert
in the auditorium?" [ Laughs ]

I started auditioning
for things.

We had a couple talent
shows in high school.

When I went to college,
a lot of the confidence

that I had building those
girl groups had kind of faded,

especially, like,
going to a music school

in Nashville,
Tennessee... The biggest pond of musicians.

And I started to
get in my head a lot

about, like,
if I'm even good enough.

I've been singing
in a cappella groups.

I also have been
recording a bit.

But this is different.
This is the big stage.

So to turn a chair would
re-ignite little Denisha.

I'll be singing
"PILLOWTALK" by ZAYN.

One of the most beautiful
parts of being a human being

is being able to
love unconditionally.

And I feel like that's what
this song is really talking about.

My family stood behind me 100%,
especially my mom.

Mom's helping. Yeah.

She actually was asked to sign a
contract with PolyGram Records

back when she was


because she wanted to have a family,
so she just gave it up.

and just make my mom
proud and my family proud.

emotionally with it.

I'm Awari, I'm 35 years old,

from Virginia Beach, Virginia.

I'm a single dad of
two beautiful children.

I was married. I'm now
divorced. We are co-parenting.

The kids,
they are the driving force

behind everything
I do right now.

Sasha,
did you find a shell you were looking for?

We have a wonderful
relationship with each other.

Wow! And we just make
every moment count.

[ Laughter ]

Since my kids have been born,
all I ever wanted to do

was give them the
best life possible.

Because a lot of my
childhood was spent

on food stamps and welfare...

That's the spaghetti,
yes. That's what I want. This one? Oh.

...it was difficult, but my mom,

she really handled it well

and made the most
out of what we had.

A lot of things that I do now
would not have been possible

without her help.

I started singing at
about the age of six.

I was the neighborhood
entertainment.

Denise: He may want
to tell you something

and instead of telling you,
he'll sing it to you.

Oh, man! What happened to,

"Growing up Awari was...

He was a very musical
and gifted child"?

[ Laughs ]

I'll get to that part,
eventually.

[ Laughs ]

At 30,
I joined the United States Air Force.

I enlisted in the Air
Force as a boom operator.

A boom operator is someone
who flies in a tanker jet

and they give fuel to
other jets that are in the air.

The military has given
me endless opportunities.

One that is most notable

is when I sing the national
anthem for football teams.

People started kneeling,
crying out

on behalf of the nation.

It was a moving time.
It was just very surreal.

Just a few months ago,
I left the military

to focus on my kids.

I feel very excited.

He gets to sing to everyone

and it's kind of like joy.

I can't stop smiling sometimes.

[ Chuckles ]

Awari: I want to show my
kids that Daddy's determined

and that he is
pursuing his dreams.

And being here today is, uh...

I'm sorry.

Just means so much to
me because it's a sacrifice

that I'm making for my
family to give us a better life.

I really want the best for them.

events, some festivals.

My friends back home
are always telling me

Hi, I'm Keegan Ferrell,
and I'm 21 years old,

and I live in Nashville but
from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Well, Keegan,
my team is completely full,

which is why I
didn't turn around.

But I thought your tone
was really sweet and angelic.

kind of music you like to do.

And obviously,
you play the keyboard.

Do you play the keys, yes.

My mom forced me to
do piano against my will.

I would come into my
lessons and lay on the ground

and refuse to play sometimes.

But I'm really thankful
that she did now.

I come from a family of six.

It didn't take me long to
figure out I was adopted.

[ Laughs ]

I was born in 1999 in China.

There's a marketplace and
then there's an alley behind it

and I was found there as a baby.

The police took me to
the orphanage in China.

They did at that time have
a very strict one-child policy.

And so I was most
likely a second child

or maybe an illegitimate child.

So I was adopted when
I was six months old.

My brother, he was also adopted.

It sounds like a really sad story,
but it made the way

for me to be here
with the family

that I have and love so much.

We didn't like the idea that
a child didn't have a home.

It was very important to have
Keegan on board in our family.

I am so proud of him.

Just being there and giving it
a shot just does my heart good.

To look back and realize how
far I came from being abandoned

and then being given
opportunities like this one.

This has kind of been a
full-circle moment for me.

First of all,
I happen to be buddies with the guy

who wrote and sang that song.

And I want you to look for just
a second at this coaching panel.

Take note at who's missing
and... and who's in that chair.

Now, I'm not saying that
Kelly Clarkson got Adam fired.

'Cause I didn't!

I just would love to be that powerful.

Kelly: So far,
my team is very eclectic.

It's the most
interesting combination

not only of genres,
but personalities.

We have everything from indie,
kind of R&B

to singer-songwriter,
alternative.

We have pop. We have
soulful. We have country.

There's like a little bit of
everything. Season 20, y'all.

But this is the most
interesting team I've ever had.

Man: One minute, one minute.

I'm waiting for something
special right now.

My name is Conner Snow.

I'm 27, and I'm from Maui,
Hawaii.

Maui's a beautiful place.

And Hawaii as a culture is
just so warm and welcoming.

And I always grew
up around music,

particularly Hawaiian music.

It's definitely made
me who I am today.

I first started playing ukulele
at 12 and I was hooked.

Started playing it for my
family and they were shocked.

My mom's face, she was just like,
"Whose son are you?"

[ Laughs ]

That feeling of
connection through music

was unlike anything
that I had felt before.

I moved to L.A. when I was 20,

put out my first
full-length album.

It was a lot of blood, sweat,
and tears that went into it.

Following that, I remember

performing my own
show to a sold-out crowd.

It was an incredible moment.

I'm still working on my career,

but being in the music industry,
it's tough.

So "The Voice"... I'm
just grateful to be here.

experience being in L.A.

This city is so important,

where L.A. pushes me
out of my boundaries.

I'm Ainae. I am 21 years old,
and I'm from Washington, D.C.

because I was
just born into music.

I'm just blessed to come from
the family that I've come from.

This is my mom. She's working.

My mother worked
in music marketing.

She always was like,
"If you're gonna do this,

you need to know
the business side."

So now I'm a marketing
major at Howard University.

It's my senior year.

I'll let y'all
know if I survive.

My mom's mom came from
Ethiopia at 17 with her twin sister.

She started Twins Jazz,

one of the last jazz
listening rooms in D.C.

A lot of people who are big now

in the jazz world
started at Twins.

That's where I got my first job.

When you work in a family business,
you end up doing everything.

My dad is a songwriter,
rapper, audio engineer,

always helped me
with all my music.

When I was growing up,
we had a studio in our basement.

It was never quiet.

You could hear whoever
he was recording.

And my neighbors used to always,
like, knock on the walls

and be like,
please turn it down.

Growing up, my dad was trying
to make a name for himself.

Now I need to be the person
who he has inspired me to be.

Everything that
we've done together,

like all the hard
work that he's put in.

Um... oh, my God.

I'm about to cry.

like, my anchor.

that that's why I'm here,

because I want him to see
that everything he's done

in his life wasn't in vain.
