and they made a bad decision
and went with another coach,

I'm giving them a chance

And I just see Reba just smiling at me,

and it was the craziest experience ever.

You did a great job on Carrie's song.

She'd be very proud.

I am gonna be learning
from the Queen of Country herself.

It's just everything I could have
hoped and dreamed for.

Honestly, just performing in front of you,

it was... Wow, just a
once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I felt completely out of my body.

How did you really connect to the song?

-I came from a man's world.
-Yeah.

I started professionally in the 70s.

Before me was Loretta and Tammy and Dolly...

-[whispers] My girls.
-...and they helped pave the way for me

and the females in my decade.

-Demanding respect is a huge part of it.
-Mmm.

-Mm-hmm.
-"Know that God gave me this gift."

-Mm-hmm.
-"God gave me this body..."

-[Elyscia] Yes.
-"...and you respect it."

-Absolutely.
-"I will respect you. You respect me."

-That's right, Ms. Reba.

that's what this song is about.

I personally connect to the song

because I would always look
for my confidence in other people,

especially guys.

I had one relationship where it had ended,
and my world was in shambles.

So I started singing,

and that's when I really found
the confidence on my own.

I grew up listening to Beyoncé.

Being around a lot of men,
in a male-dominated industry,

sometimes I even feel a little like,
"How do I maneuver here?"

My mom has always told me
make sure I stand my ground.

Be strong in who I am as a woman.

Continue to have that respect
for yourself.

Continue to work hard.

It's so, so, so important for me
to make it to the knockout rounds

because this is what I want.
I just don't back down.

How's the key for you?

-Uh, it's good.

Yeah. It gets a little low.

The reason why I'm such a stickler

is people in the audience, they're going,

And they're gonna miss

that I was very proud of her on.

I remember from the blind audition

and you telling us that you were

Well, you do a wonderful job singing.

A person, if they want to
make it in any business,

they've got to have
a drive and determination.

but it complemented each other,

and they bonded.

That was fire. First of all,
this is one of my favorite songs

-of all time.

just did it so much justice.

So it started off as, like,
a battle back and forth.

Have you ever seen when Mariah
and Whitney Houston did that thing,

-and they were like...

Elyscia, you exude this star quality,
just the way you carry yourself,

the way that you confidently go
for those notes and those big moments.

It is something that I was marveling at.

I would give the edge to Elyscia.

I thought that she carried

-this challenge of the song better...

...but I would say they're both forces
to be reckoned with.

Ashley, you showed a new side
of your voice, I thought,

in this performance with all the runs.
And I think you crushed it.

Elyscia, your control is just,
like, one of the best

-in this entire competition right now.

-You guys are really picking hard songs.

I was really impressed.

Elyscia, I think you just have
really cool stylistic choices,

and everything about you, it just says,

"This woman belongs on stage,

and people need to see her,
and people need to hear her."

And then, Ashley, you sang that song.

When you were hitting those big notes,

it was ringing through the room.

The way you sustained it,
it was brilliant, it was beautiful.

You are just a wonderful,

-wonderful singer.
-[exhales sharply]

I actually think Ashley gave the best
vocal performance of this song.

a lot of my tastes in music,

and so I love James Taylor.

music was not really

an interest of mine at all.

It was skateboarding.

There was a really cool loading dock
in the back of the church to skate off of.

So I went to church to skate.

But it turns out,
the more I went to church,

the more I fell in love with music.

When I first started singing,
I got in my closet,

shut the door, and prayed no one heard me.

[chuckles]

But my mom is my biggest supporter.

She wouldn't quit telling me to audition,
so I listened to her.

When I saw John turn around,
I was just so grateful, seriously.

Your performance was so subtle,

and you just ex*cuted it
with beauty and precision.

I mean, he's unbelievable as an artist,

and this has been the part of the process
that I've been most looking forward to

is the mentorship
and just getting to grow.

It sounds beautiful.

But there's one part
where I feel like you guys

are kind of stumbling over each other.

I really think of my friends

I went into this high school

Working with John has been incredible,

and he's bringing me
out of my comfort zone.

If I get to knockouts, my friends
are going to be glued to that TV,

I know for sure.

with the beautiful tone,
and that's a way to stand out.

You don't always have to be
the biggest vocalist

to stand out in this competition.

that breathy, airy tone,

and I felt like whenever
you were harmonizing with Mafe,

the texture of those two voices
were beautiful together.

[Shay] Your voice is just so present.

I feel like it was just
right here in front of me.

Maybe because these speakers
are right next to my head,

-it felt like you were there.

Mafe, your range is just everywhere.

that will help her to cut through.
