grandfather just made it this morning

except completely

different well I don't know it doesn't

really look like bread real bread is

square and white and it comes in a

plastic bag with colored dots on it Ben

specific it's great oh come on everybody

yum hey this is good yeah how did your

grandfather make it Skye yeah well first

he takes some flour yeah and then he

takes his magic wand yeah and stands on

his

head okay maybe I'd better let him tell

hi sadala don't tell me Sky your friends

didn't like the FR bread oh they love it

they want to know how you made it well

you call it the right time I was just

about to make another

batch making a paty FR

bread we start off with

flour and then use lukewarm

water I pour it in

uh the flour and trying to mix it until

you make complete ball big

one and if it's too wet then I even need

to put some more flow on

there like it be all even

everywhere and then after that you make

ball less than tennis ball

size I pour the oil in the frying

[Music]

pan and then you let your dough like

tortilla and then very gently you put it

into the oil when you know that it's

really hot and bubbly

and then you be turn it and begin to get

brown the

bottom a Pache fried bread we call in a

Pache is

p f is bread kaha means

grease FR bread is very popular in

everybody likes it

wow great so it's sort of fried like a

donut only in a pancakey sort of way

that's one way to put it I hope you like

it kids thanks Jala yeah thanks a lot

sir wait a minute when my mom makes

bread she puts the dough in a big pan

then she lets it sit in an oven now now

how come this Bread is made in a frying

pan this is a mystery Ben it it's made

in a pen for a special reason hm this is

not a mystery no no it it it has to do

with how the Apaches lived a 100 years

ago a long time ago my people the White

Mountain Apache lived in the western

part of the United States the Apaches

lived in homes made of branches covered

with bear grass they called their homes

wik UPS the Apache people moved around a

lot They carried everything in buck skin

bags slung over their shoulders they

moved from Lake to Spring to River

Building wik ups every place they stayed

now when you move around the lot and you

have to carry everything a stove is much

too heavy to bring along so instead of

using stoves the Apaches cooked over

campfires frying pans were perfect for

cooking over campfires and they were

easy to

carry so bread was cooked in a frying

pan into round golden brown loaves of

aache fry bread and it reminds us of who

we were back then which is part of who

we are today wow so

cool oh yeah we make fried bread for for

one other

reason it's

yeah you better hurry before it's all

oh well I'm not actually hungry right

now but I will be in um 8 days

yeah oh 8 days it'll be all stale by

the basket um well just the basket stuff

oh right well come on Jodie just have a

bite of fried bread yeah Jodie it's good

dog G it mhm dog oh dog yeah I don't

think anybody's fed nuzzle and Sizzle

yet so I better go feed them so they can

have like some uh

food bye yeah but what about my Fred

bread I'll take another piece yeah but

Ben oh wow these cans are really dented

I'll get you some some nice new

ones oh I wonder if Sky noticed that I

didn't try any of his grandfather's fry

worry I mean I have a perfectly good

reason for not trying it it all has to

do with what's in my

mean well if I had told everyone the

reason they would have all paid

attention to me instead of

okay and he was so proud of the fried

bread I didn't want to get in his

way I fear

understands oh but of course he doesn't

feelings you know Leon y this problem

between jod and sky is making me as

nervous as a mouse in a cat show I'm

going to fix this problem once and for

if I can get jod to try some of this

everything will be

bread sometimes new things can be sort

of scary or

strange have you ever had a hard time

trying something

new my mom yesterday made this fish that

I didn't really like but um but um my

but I ate the whole plate and was okay I

had a hard time trying to taste the

green beans Chinese food and was I ever

surprised when I liked it because it

tasted a lot different from food that I

usually have well my mom gave me some

corn and I liked it so much that I ate

my brother's all up and he got

mad see trying new things can be hard

let me see if I can make it easier for

Jodie hey Jody you know it is true that

trying new stuff can be hard but kids do

it all the time so come on be a pal have

a piece of Apache fried bread of course

I'll try

some I did it yes that's great in 8 days

that's small and the time and the place

minute oh Skye I know you have feelings

and I'm really sorry if I hurt

them Jody you know it's okay if you

don't like my grandfather's Fred bread

but you could at least try it I mean you

didn't even try it but Skye I can't I

can't try your grandfather's fry bread

because it's

Passover

okay hello Passover it's

what today's the first day of one of the

biggest and most important Jewish

holidays oh what do you mean is it like

Christmas oh no it's completely

different you see thousands of years ago

my great great great great great great

great great Jody Jody I get the idea the

story is about your

ancestors oh yeah

right thousands of years ago the Jewish

people were sl*ves in a place called

Egypt they had no freedom to live the

way they wanted they needed to be

free then a great leader named Moses

helped the Jewish people escape from

Egypt everyone was so busy packing they

had no time to bake regular bread for

the big Journey usually you let bread

dough sit around before you bake it so

that it rises and gets all

fluffy but the Jewish people were in a

hurry so they baked the dough while it

was still

flat they called it matza which means

bread that is flat for a long time after

that the Jewish people wandered through

the desert traveling from place to place

today we are grateful for being free and

we remember our escape from Egypt by

celebrating the holiday called Passover

and eating

matah Jody that's

amazing oh yeah I guess it is pretty

neat no don't you get it oh get what

your ancestors lived by wandering from

place to place and so did mine and Jody

you have a special bread because of that

and so do I that's right I have matah

and you have Fred bread that's amazing

yeah wow well so how do you celebrate

Passover well it's both serious and fun

we tell that story and we think about

how hard life was back then but everyone

has a great time just being

together I'm Lauren I love it when my

family gets together for

Passover we have a big meal called the

Seder Aunt Rifka lights candles to start

it off

grandpa says a prayer

in I love the way his voice

sounds bread is an important part of our

meal grandpa takes a piece and holds it

up it's flat and

crispy we call this bread matah and it

tastes great don't pat hand why is this

Knight distinguished from all their all

other nights any other my favorite part

is when I read the four

questions they ask about the meaning of

the bread and the Passover celebration

drink either sitting or but on this

night all of us

recline Uncle Jack answers my question

this is the bread of Affliction which

our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt

let us all those who are hungry enter

and eat their of and all who are in

distress come and celebrate the Passover

finally everyone sings the old songs in

Hebrew Passover is wonderful I can't

wait until we celebrate it again next

year one of the great things about

Passover is Jewish families are

celebrating at the same time all over

the world wow oh and Sky one more Thing

Once the holiday starts the only kind of

bread you can eat is

matah so guess how long Passover lasts

um 8 Days 8 days yes eight

days and that's why you couldn't try my

fried bread well that's fine but uh jod

can can I try some of your matah

that's why I brought this basket so

everyone can try some looks great

matah at the Seder it means blessed art

thou O Lord our god king of the universe

who brings forth bread from the earth
