and I use a wheelchair oh um gee I'm

sorry Kyle well that's okay I just like

to say I use a wheelchair cuz if I were

just in a wheelchair could I do

something like

my Treads have super traction you can

really go when you want them to stylish

yet

practical boy using a wheelchair must be

terrific exercise I bet you're really

strong can you show us how it works Kyle

well sure no problem I just put my hands

on the wheels here I let my arms do the

pushing yeah my wheelchair is built to

be safe fast and

flexible my wheelchair is an amazing

[Music]

thing it took me a while to learn how to

use my

wheelchair pushing the wheels is hard

work so your arms really get strong

once you get the hang of it it's easy to

turn and

[Music]

stop sometimes I get tired but I keep on

going that's the best part going

especially going

[Applause]

I love to play tag with my friends can't

catch

me uhoh

uhoh when you want to stop in one place

just put on the brakes

my wheelchair takes me wherever I want

to

go it's a great way to get

around yeah so you know it takes a

little practice but once you learn how

to work a wheelchair you can really move

hey Kyle SK say You're really good with

a basketball and I sure could use some

help on my free throw could you give me

some tips oh I'd love to here let me

help you oh no that's okay Jody I can do

this

myself okay here goes

nothing well that's pretty good jod but

you're pushing it try um popping it a

little and giving it some spin with your

fingers okay pushing it oh yeah you're

was good you should see some of my

oh and there's the tip and the white

team has the ball now they're trying to

around and number 15 picks up the loose

ball and brings it down court for the

layup yes that was a great

play

number 14 passes to his teammate who

puts it in off the glass and the fans

love it blue team with the ball

now number seven gets the pass at the

top of the key he drives the

lane and puts it in for two points what

a

shot K the white team puts the ball in

play and they bring it up Court

as they come across half court number

seven gets into

position here's a baseline pass and she

throlls it in off the rim oh that was a

great pass across the

[Applause]

lane way to

go wow oh you're going to be as good a

player as they are aren't you oh well

yeah think how great you're going to

feel why you get back on your feet again

Kyle and get uh out of this wheelchair

um um Ben Ben uh can I talk to you for a

better better yeah well I mean uh once

you get out of this

wheelchair um that's not going to happen

Ben well you know I can dance too but

not in the same way you just did but um

you will be able to walk again someday

anything anything uh H in that case

hey Ben oh hi Kyle do you mind my asking

what's bothering you oh I don't know I

just um well I guess that

uh well I feel sorry for

what for you I feel sorry that that you

have to use a

wheelchair whoa you make it sound bad

isn't

it sometimes it is but look people who

use wheelchairs have lives that aren't

so different from everybody else's

really

mhm people who use wheelchairs take

trains to where they want to

go shop in their favorite

stores and work in all kinds of places

and at many different kinds of

jobs a lot of us love

sports like

bowling pingpong

bike

riding and even

[Music]

tennis this wheelchair has a

[Music]

motor it's great for getting around the

city

and especially hiking on a

[Music]

hill see people who use wheelchairs swim

and Ski and guess what what when I'm 16

I'll even be able to drive a car me too

yeah

yeah yeah we do most of the things

everyone enjoys we just do them sitting

down you know Kyle I never realized how

many things people who use wheelchairs

can

do I'm sorry I guess I just didn't

understand well a lot of people mean

well but they still say things that hurt

my feelings yeah but doesn't that bug

you sure it does it bugs a lot of

kids sometimes people stare at me

because I use a wheelchair and that

bothers me sometimes kids make fun of me

cousin I'm in a wheelchair and it makes

me feel sad and I Cry Sometimes if they

just come up to me and start pushing me

when I don't want them to that's very

impolite people shouldn't keep asking

why I use my wheelchair I would like to

be treated like anyone

else uh Kyle

mhm I kind of feel bad why well remember

before when I asked you when you were

going to get better yeah well I feel bad

about that hey don't sweat it really mhm

a thanks Kyle you're a real pal it's

just that I've never met someone who

uses a wheelchair before you have now

yeah hey is there any kind of stuff I

can do to make it easier for you to get

around hey there are lots of ways to

make getting around in a wheelchair

easier and fun

some Vans have a special lift to help

you get in and

out it's like an

[Music]

elevator this park was designed for all

kids see the table has a bench just on

one side so someone using a wheelchair

can roll up and play too

ramps are a lot better than stairs so

ramps make getting in and out of

buildings easy and

fun

[Music]

woohoo check it out this play area has

ramps too so everyone can use it

[Music]

Dess I'm caling down

restrooms that have wide doorways let

someone using a wheelchair go right in

[Music]

a handle like this one makes turning on

the water a lot easier and look the

mirror is tilted so you can see

yourself just remember be considerate

and let everyone know how important

these ideas

are all that stuff is important but

mainly Ben just must treat me the way

you would treat someone who can

walk hey even though I can't walk I'm

still the same as

you yeah you know Kyle you're right

could just use this ladder it's it's

just a a different way of doing the same

thing

my hands on the wheels here and start

grooving
