hey guys do you know what it's like to

be a rescue hero get set to learn come

on along because there goes a rescue

hero

there are so many different types of

rescue professionals that are highly

trained and always on duty to help us in

an emergency they're all rescue heroes

[Music]

oh hi hey it's Dave and you know me but

you don't know this guy this is my dog

Charlie and Charlie's gonna learn how to

be a rescue hero dog today aren't you

Charlie say hi you can always tell

Charlie because you got one here up in

one ear down just so you don't get us

confused you know now rescue heroes are

really cool they can be firefighters

police officers Coast Guard guys men

women even dogs can be rescue heroes so

if you're ready we're ready let's go

learn how to be a rescue hero Charlie

let's see now where did they tell us to

meet him let's try over

well Charlie we got to find those dog

trainers hey lose your nose that's what

it's for

that's Charlie this looks like the work

of the urban search-and-rescue team huh

and they must be getting close now yeah

come on hey I know you're excited about

learning to be a real rescue dog but you

know there's other kinds of rescue

heroes too have you ever heard of the

you SAR team

the urban search and rescue team

check out that cool patch huh national

you saw that's national urban

search-and-rescue team these guys are

real rescue heroes if there's an

earthquake or a hurricane or something

like that or maybe a building collapses

and they gotta go in and find somebody

these are the guys that you call you

want to meet a real one here is Don

Shellhammer he's one of the main guys

with the California task force done tell

me some of the things you do and some of

the neat tools that you used to do it

well we respond out to any type of

incident that involves large-scale

collapses floods earthquakes hurricanes

anything like that and then we take out

our specialized equipment and we're able

to extricate people out of those areas

where they could be trapped can you show

us how it works you bet okay come on

start off with the crowbar and a crowbar

is just like any almost digging bar that

we have at-at your basic hardware store

and we utilize that for getting a

purchase and lifting up heavy objects

with a mechanical advantage of the

leverage that you can get out of that

now this is a Jack this is a hydraulic

jack to reveal that the movie is

hydraulic jacks to go ahead and raise up

again

heavy heavy things that we just normally

couldn't lift up by herself

variety of jackhammers triple breakers

different tools like that

obviously they recognize talent they

gave me the leader hat hey one of the

most important tools that the urban

search-and-rescue guys use when they're

saving people from underneath having

stuff like this is one of these babies

these are called lift bags there's two

of them in there and they'll actually

lift 32 tons that's about as much weight

as two great big fire trucks put

together and the way they work is

there's compressed air in this yellow

tank here and it pumped out through here

and through this control mechanism here

when you push up it fills the bags up

then they take these wooden planks and

put them in there to hold it up so it

can't come back down again

the guys that put the wood in to keep it

propped up are called critters and this

wood is called cribbing it holds

everything up once they get it pumped up

with the airbags yeah pretty amazing

that these two little bags could lift

all that weight Wow

[Music]

the men and women of the u.s. Coast

Guard are rescue heroes to search and

rescue is one of the Coast Guard's most

important missions that use all sorts of

special equipment to perform the rescues

from helicopters and cutters to

inflatable boats all this equipment is

manned by some amazing rescue heroes

look at this rescue the boat is sinking

and the brave Coast Guard crew saves the

people on board just in the nick of time

police officers and sheriff's deputies

are also rescue heroes they are often

called upon and are the first to arrive

in an emergency some have very special

rescue skills

come on curly you and I'd be a good

rescue hero team I just know we would we

gotta find the dog trainers first could

those guys be well look how high up we

are

this is a fireman's practice now charlie

don't worry I won't make you fall they

come up here to practice I thought we

might find the dog training team up here

but I don't see them anywhere but you

know firemen can be rescue heroes too

you bet they can

big red fire truck you know

firefighters are another kind of rescue

hero in fact firefighters rescue heroes

almost every day that's right they risk

their lives to save other people's lives

and they use all kinds of cool equipment

like this big red fire truck hey what do

you say we meet a real firefighting

rescue hero come on captain Mike bonkers

of the North County Fire Department a

real-life firefighting rescue hero it's

Dave reporting for duty sir I want to

learn all about being a firefighting

rescue hero all right what's the most

important thing a firefighting rescue

hero has to remember well the most

important things you need to remember

when you come into the station not to

get your head on the mirror of the truck

that's the most important I shouldn't

have done that that's for sure but other

than that other than that day the most

important thing is to remember that we

have to be ready to go at a moment's

notice so that all of our equipment is

ready to go Dave how would you like to

go to a training exercise with us it's

really nice your size yes sir all right

but before we go I have to give you your

own turn out cause my own turn out coach

how do I look I'm going to be a real

firefighting rescue hero now let's go

look at this these are the tools right

right these are the tools we talked

about earlier remember I told you the

tools we use that to get cars open and

they've been in wrecks the first tool

here is our big scissors here on

hydraulic scissor big hydraulic scissors

roll through metal better you middle cut

the post thought from the roof to the

dash we can peel the whole look back on

the car there Dave

our second tool is our hydraulic

spreader and this is a sin works on the

same principle with the hydraulic tool

and we we make a purchase point in the

door and stick that in the door we open

it up and it spreads it open our third

tool is our hydraulic ram that we use if

somebody was trapped and the seam pushed

up and their feet were underneath the

gas pedal for the break then we use a

piece of cribbing a piece of wood up

against the firewall and we go ahead and

we open this up and one end pushes the

firewall in Heather and pushes that seat

that's like a big jack that just spreads

apart and spreads this big pieces of

metal apart see and get to people and

you got it and you've got it alright a

date you remember I told you had a

special job for you yes I'm ready sir

alrighty your special job is to go ahead

and get the power unit and get it out of

the unit and get it started so we can

get the work yes sir thank you sir okay

it's fireman Dave we'll get right on it

the power unit

what is the power yard where is

there you go the hydraulic power unit

these hoses here are used to pump the

hydraulic fluid and there they're hooked

on to the big tools like this you're

gonna I'm doing here and here and then

we'll come in here and and here then we

just started up and the hydraulic fluid

is powered by the six horsepower engine

through the pump on the bottom and over

to the scissors makes them very strong

because there's lots and lots of

pressure what do you say we start it up

I got turned on first

almost almost okay here we go

these are the hydraulic scissors

important

the hydraulic scissors go cut cut cut

my slice slice through the metal

this is a hydraulic ram it pushes things

apart look at the hydraulic spreader or

jaws of life Wow the hydraulic spreader

pulls the door off

it pulls and pulls and pulls and bam

puff comes the door

those guys are having all the fun I know

I can be a good rescue hero if I just

had the opportunity yes I could I can

see it now firemen came to the rescue

paramedics and EMTs are rescue heroes

too hi kids my name is Tammy and I'm a

paramedic part of my job is to take care

of you if you get hurt you might get

hurt in a car crash or falling out of a

tree my ambulance here has a lot of

equipment that'll help me do my job why

don't you come along and I'll show you

what I have what are the main pieces my

equipment is the gurney it comes right

out of my ambulance I pull it out the

wheels fall down and I go wherever

you're hurt this is a rescue basket if

you fall down a big hill

we're able to put you in this and bring

you up the hill this is called a rescue

scoop stretcher we're able to scoop you

up kind of like a little ice cream with

you in here put that underneath you and

bring you up this is also called a

rescue backboard if you get in a car

crash or fall out of a tree we put this

on your neck put you on here and take

you to the hospital that way

everybody likes to go to the pool or to

the beach to swim but sometimes they get

in trouble and they need help and that's

the job of the lifeguard

lifeguards are rescue heroes too

sometimes they use special inflatable

boats like these to rescue people caught

in the surf

heroes I know we could you and I be a

good team we can just find the trainers

where are they okay climb good boy very

Charlie reporting for duty sir we've

been all over the place looking for you

I'll be finally fine you were so good

glad to be here at rescue school I'm

glad you finally found your way here

every to me to some training and we'll

do something maybe really easy like

obedience training for starters okay

good idea okay Charlie okay this is

Billy and he's my disaster search dog

his job in life is to go out and find

people who are buried underneath the

rubble

jinke will go into the dark rooms and

buildings that are collapsed or

hurricanes or tornados and he'll find

them and bark for where they are and let

me know that somebody's buried

underneath the rubble they work for one

reason they worked for verbal praise or

someone we tell them a good boy and they

work for a toy the toy that we use is

this a little tug toy and the dog loves

if I tug with it and it's his reward so

he will go out and do things because

it's his reward he gets to have fun and

this is his playtime there's sometimes

dogs that people can't tolerate because

they are the rambunctious type of dog

and so they end up at the animal shelter

but will rescue them from the animal

shelter and turn them into rescuers by

teaching them how to go out and find

people all dogs have a very good ability

to smell so because their nose is maybe

a hundred times more sensitive than than

humans they're able to smell human scent

so that's the biggest tool they have on

their body is the fact they could smell

very good

another tool they have is the fact that

there varies their somewhat smaller than

humans and they have four legs which we

call four-wheel drive so they get into

areas that are not as easily accessible

for us so and they love to play so the

combination is smelling the ability to

walk on things

where we can't walk and the desire to

play but that's kind of rescue dogs are

the ones that love to play and love to

have fun because they're doing it for

the one reason and they think it's a

game all right Dave the first thing we

need to teach our dogs how to do is we

need to teach them some real basic

obedience okay all right so the first

thing we can do is teach them how to sit

so you could put your dog down charlie

this is search specialist and rescue

heroes Steve and his dog Sherman they

are also part of a new Santi get up sit

back yep sit good boy stay look yeah

he's a pretty dog huh now you can sit

there and take orders something you'll

be able to do that too

yes you will Furman specializes in

searching for people that are trapped or

missing and collapsed building well he

does he knows that if he finds somebody

he picks her scent up out of the air he

goes and finds them in barks and tells

me where they're at if someone's gonna

come and play with him he thinks it's a

big game we did go work New York at

Ground Zero when the towers collapsed he

then worked at the site for ten days

as far as Sherman is concerned he

doesn't know the difference between the

training or real missions because it's

all a game to him it's all played in

seriously Charlie if you're gonna be a

real rescue hero

an avalanche can catch you by surprise

sometimes burying people deep in the

snow here's another kind of rescue dog

specially trained to respond in the snow

they're trained to sniff the snow with

their powerful noses and find the people

buried beneath the snow

don't feel bad charlie not everybody can

be a rescue dog hi Dave

hey chief we're kind of bummed out over

here Charlie doesn't think he can do it

he's not too good at all these tricks

just yet that's okay don't worry it

takes thousands of hours to train a good

search dog hear that Charlie thousands

of hours I don't think we I think we'd

rather have lunch okay how about you can

help us out one other thing sure enough

you go hide for dogs and let our dogs

find you hey that sounds like fun

rescue heroes and rescue professionals

are highly trained and it's good to know

that they're there to help you if you

get into trouble of course the best

thing is if you don't get into trouble

in the first place
