running time - 24mins 22secs
1. KENT’S CARAVAN
(Black boots step into the caravan, which belong to BRUCE, accompanied by a security guard. The DOCTOR looks at BRUCE with fear, breathing heavily. He’s taken the towel off and he wears SALAMANDER’s jacket.)
BRUCE: Stay where you are. I’ve been looking forward to meeting you again. Over there . . . . No, not you.
(He holds the DOCTOR back with his cane while KENT and ASTRID move to the other side of the room. The DOCTOR has acquired the complete SALAMANDER costume, but he wears the jacket closed while SALAMANDER wears it open.)
BRUCE: Sit down, all of you.
(The DOCTOR sits and BRUCE steps toward him, giving the guard behind him room to come inside.)
KENT: How did you find us?
BRUCE: (Turns.) Your last visitor was Salamander’s deputy Benik. When he left, he fixed this underneath your trailer. (Holding a small, round device in his glove.)
ASTRID: A radio tracking device.
KENT: On whose authority?
BRUCE: Mine.
(He studies the DOCTOR.)
BRUCE: It’s amazing how alike you and Salamander are. Incredible. You fooled me the first time we met, but now, even Salamander himself would think he was looking in a mirror. Why?
(The DOCTOR sighs.)
BRUCE: (Turns to KENT.) You want this man to impersonate Salamander, why?
(Neither of them respond.)
BRUCE: (Turns to the DOCTOR.) How much are they paying you?
DOCTOR: I beg your pardon?
BRUCE: They want you to assassinate Salamander, don’t they? Take his place?
DOCTOR: That’s ridiculous! I couldn’t possibly do that!
BRUCE: But you were preparing to impersonate him, weren’t you?
DOCTOR: (Breathing rapidly.) Well- well yes.
BRUCE: All right then, why?
DOCTOR: (Breathing rapidly.) Because Salamander holds my two friends prisoner and I was going to attempt to rescue them.
ASTRID: And at the same time get evidence that would expose Salamander as a traitor, blackmailer, and m*rder*r!
BRUCE: Quite an ambitious plan. How do you know such evidence exists?
KENT: It exists in Salamander’s records.
BRUCE: Oh, yes, I know why you want Salamander out of the way. You hate him because he exposed your profitable sideline of misusing public money.
ASTRID: (insistent) Oh, it was Salamander who was misusing the money.
KENT: And I was dismissed from my post and the evidence against Salamander concealed.
BRUCE: So you say. But you’ve no evidence at all against Salamander, have you?
KENT: I tell you the evidence is in Salamander’s records.
BRUCE: And I’m expected to take that from you?
DOCTOR: We do hold evidence that Salamander isn’t quite so pure and white as he’s painted. (Mouth goes crooked.)
BRUCE: No? What?
DOCTOR: A file, containing certain information about a gentleman called Fedorin.
ASTRID: Salamander was going to use this evidence against Fedorin. Blackmail him into submission. After he’d got rid of Denes, that is.
KENT: And so gain control of another zone.
BRUCE: Where is this file?
DOCTOR: Fariah has it, Salamander’s food taster.
(The DOCTOR quickly covers his mouth, pretending to be embarrassed for saying too much.)
BRUCE: Fariah? But she’s dead.
(The DOCTOR stands, shocked.)
DOCTOR: Dead? But how?
BRUCE: She was shot by one of Benik’s guards, escaping arrest.
DOCTOR: Oh, that’s . . . .
KENT: (Stands.) Escaping arrest? Benik had her k*lled, because she had evidence against Salamander.
ASTRID: And Benik will return the file to Salamander. We must get to the Research Station.
(She steps fearlessly toward the door, but BRUCE stops her.)
BRUCE: You’re not going anywhere or doing anything. As far as I’m concerned this story you’ve told me could be a pack of lies to cover your attempt to assassinate Salamander. Now I’m not saying I’m altogether satisfied with Salamander or his organisation, but I’ll investigate in my own way.
KENT: Meanwhile Salamander will have found a way to cover himself, and also a way of disposing of you. You’re digging your own grave, Bruce.
BRUCE: (Steps toward him.) That’s my affair. And I do things my own way.
(Suddenly ASTRID shoves the guard, causing him to fall out of the caravan, and takes his g*n, pointing it at BRUCE.)
ASTRID: And I do things my way. (Laughs.) Really, as Head of Security, you should have more reliable guards.
(BRUCE stares at the g*n in both fear and surprise.)
2. HALLWAY, RESEARCH STATION
BENIK: Leader Salamander?
GUARD: (Turns toward him.) Still inside, sir.
BENIK: Let me know the moment the doors are opened.
GUARD: Yes sir.
(More guards carry JAMIE and VICTORIA, unconscious on stretchers, past BENIK and the guard. The CAPTAIN approaches BENIK.)
BENIK: So you’ve brought them? Good. Any trouble?
CAPTAIN: No, a light drug saw to that.
BENIK: Let me know the moment they wake up.
CAPTAIN: Yes sir.
BENIK: I’m looking forward to questioning them. I have the feeling they’re going to be stubborn. So much more interesting when our prisoners are stubborn.
(BENIK follows the guards. The CAPTAIN looks glad to be away from BENIK, and sorry for BENIK’s prisoners.)
3. KENT’S CARAVAN
BRUCE: You’re only making trouble for yourself. k*lling me won’t get you anywhere.
(KENT keeps close behind ASTRID as she advances threateningly.)
ASTRID: We have to get to the Research Station, and you’re not going to stop us.
BRUCE: (Arms crossed.) But you’re completely surrounded. You don’t really believe I came here with just one guard, do you?
(The DOCTOR, KENT, and ASTRID look out the windows nervously. ASTRID’s confidence has vanished, but she keeps the weapon on him.)
BRUCE: You’d be very silly to try and fight your way out. I’d give you about . . . (Looks toward the ceiling, thinking.) thirty seconds to live if you try.
KENT: All right Bruce, we might have just thirty seconds but you’d have exactly half that time, if you were lucky!
DOCTOR: Please, Mister Kent! (Hands folded.) You’re forgetting one very important thing.
KENT: What?
DOCTOR: Me. Without me you haven’t got an earthly chance of getting in that control centre.
KENT: So?
DOCTOR: I told you before, I will not have anything to do with violence!
KENT: And what about your two friends? Are you going to leave them to the tender mercies of Salamander?
DOCTOR: No I am not! (Spreads his hands toward ASTRID.) May I?
ASTRID: What?
DOCTOR: Please? Just trust me.
(He carefully grabs the g*n and pushes it down. He suddenly takes it from ASTRID and points it at BRUCE.)
DOCTOR: Now then, I think you’ll agree that at this moment your life is in my hands.
(The DOCTOR approaches BRUCE threateningly. He suddenly turns the g*n around, handing it over. BRUCE takes his chance and grabs it back as the DOCTOR quickly steps back.)
KENT & ASTRID: What are you doing?
(BRUCE points the g*n at them.)
BRUCE: Hold it.
DOCTOR: It’s all right, Mister Bruce isn’t going to sh**t anyone, are you?
(BRUCE relaxes, but keeps the g*n on them, genuinely confused.)
BRUCE: Why? Why’d you do that?
DOCTOR: Because I think I know what sort of man you are - honest and reasonable.
BRUCE: Go on.
DOCTOR: I gave you back that g*n because I trust you. Now I want you to trust me.
BRUCE: You must be a . . . complete fool, or very clever.
DOCTOR: Well I’m afraid you will have to make up your mind to that right away.
BRUCE: What do you here hope to gain from this gesture?
DOCTOR: Your confidence.
BRUCE: Do you believe . . . Kent’s accusations against Salamander?
DOCTOR: I think there’s reasonable doubt about Salamander’s personal integrity, but there’s only one way to get proof.
BRUCE: By getting into Salamander’s Research Station?
DOCTOR: Yes. And my two young friends may have some information.
BRUCE: And if there isn’t any evidence?
DOCTOR: Then you’ll be perfectly free to arrest us and put us in prison, won’t you?
BRUCE: (Clears throat.) All right, I’ll do it. On one condition.
DOCTOR: And what’s that?
BRUCE: That you and I go alone, Kent and the girl stay here as hostages.
KENT: Now wait a minute, I must go with him.
BRUCE: No, Kent, you stay here. (to the DOCTOR) I must be mad to trust you. I only hope your impersonation of Salamander fools Benik. If it doesn’t, we’re in dead trouble. (Handing the g*n to the guard.) Here, take this. Keep those two in the caravan.
(The guard points the g*n firmly at KENT and ASTRID while BRUCE and the DOCTOR step toward the door. BRUCE stops and turns.)
BRUCE: Oh, and, um . . . watch the girl. (to the DOCTOR) Come on.
(They walk away. The guard keeps the g*n pointed at KENT and ASTRID as he steps outside and closes the door. KENT and ASTRID look at each other, wondering what to do.)
4. CONTROL ROOM, UNDERGROUND
(SALAMANDER, still in his dirty jumpsuit, enters and approaches the intercom on his desk as the door slides closed behind him.)
SALAMANDER: Swann, I’m back in the control room.
5. WORK ROOM, UNDERGROUND
(SWANN looks up as SALAMANDER’s voice comes over the intercom.)
SALAMANDER: I placed the new food cases on the conveyor.
(The other workers listen.)
SALAMANDER: Detail some men to unload them. Then make a report on schedule seven.
SWANN: (Turns to the group.) Jones, Morris, Hunt.
(He waves and they follow him away from the group.)
SWANN: Now remember, if there’s any contamination showing up at all on the register, you must tell me immediately.
(One nods and they turn to the food station. He turns some knobs and a door in the wall slides open revealing a box labeled “MILK” with a sticker reading “GLASS” slapped to the cardboard almost sideways. Two men pull it out of the alcove and hand it to the third, who takes it away as another box slides down the conveyor belt. All that is visible of the label is “CAN.” SWANN nods at their progress and turns away.)
COLIN: Swann?
(SWANN turns to face him.)
COLIN: Have you ever thought what would happen to us if Salamander didn’t come back from the surface one day?
SWANN: No. He always comes back. And talk like that isn’t healthy, I’ve told you about this before, Colin. (Looks at clipboard.)
COLIN: You can live in a dream world if you want to.
SWANN: Morale is important down here.
COLIN: Reality is important, too! Facing facts!
MARY: (Steps between them.) Colin . . . .
COLIN: Yes, all right.
(He returns to his station. MARY follows SWANN as he continues his rounds.)
MARY: I’m sorry, Swann.
SWANN: (Faces her.) He’s the best man I’ve got.
MARY: I know.
SWANN: If only he’d just accept the fact that everything will-
MARY: (interrupting) He never will!
SWANN: He must be more patient then. We’ll get out of here one day.
MARY: Will we?
SWANN: Of course we will. Salamander says so.
MARY: (softly) Yes . . . .
(SWANN walks away. COLIN approaches MARY.)
COLIN: Blind idiot. Why does he think everybody else has to be an idiot too?
MARY: We daren’t let people think, Colin. Swann’s all right.
COLIN: I don’t think it’s right. Just work, sleep, eat - if there’s enough to go round. Like worms under the earth, sightless worms wriggling about without hope. Without purpose.
MARY: It isn’t like that.
COLIN: Isn’t it? All this? Every day I ask myself what are we doing down here!
MARY: You’ve never doubted him before.
COLIN: I don’t know. I don’t say I doubt him . . . but just once Mary, just once I wanna see with my own eyes what’s going on up there! Me! Not hear about it from anybody else.
SWANN: Getting on with your work? Mustn’t fall behind, you know.
(COLIN pretends to be busy and MARY goes back to work.)
SWANN: Come on Colin, we all get depressed. I know how you feel.
(SWANN touches COLIN’s arm reassuringly, but COLIN pulls away harshly. He quickly calms down.)
COLIN: Sorry.
SWANN: That’s all right.
(He pauses awkwardly before approaching the workers at the food station.)
SWANN: Ah, how we getting on here, huh? Ah, all this? That’s a good haul.
(He approaches a pile of boxes, many of which are stamped “FRAGILE.” He lifts a box labeled “MEAT,” with “FRAGILE” stamped right across the center of the word, and examines it. A piece of paper appears to be stuck to the bottom of the box. SWANN looks up at SALAMANDER’s voice over the PA.)
SALAMANDER: Stand by to make your report, Swann.
(As he puts the box down, he notices the scrap of paper and pulls it off. His face is blank. He stares at it while he walks toward the Control Room in shock.)
MARY: Reaching full power here, Swann.
(She looks concerned and touches COLIN’s arm when SWANN doesn’t respond. SWANN pushes workers out of his way to reach the door. He shakes the handle, but it is locked. He pushes a button on the intercom on the wall.)
SWANN: Salamander, I must see you.
6. CONTROL ROOM, UNDERGROUND
SALAMANDER: (Presses the button on the intercom.) Not now, we are too busy.
SWANN: This is urgent.
SALAMANDER: (Presses the button.) Oh very well. (Clears throat.)
(He stands and walks to the Communicator. He flips a switch to open the door and flips more switches and knobs to look busy as SWANN enters. SALAMANDER approaches him.)
SALAMANDER: Now what’s the matter, huh?
SWANN: (in shock) What’s this? What is this?
SALAMANDER: What?
SWANN: Newspaper. It’s a piece of newspaper.
(SALAMANDER glances at it.)
SALAMANDER: So?
SWANN: Well go on, look at it. Read it. Last year’s date. (Pointing.) Look at the bit of headline there. (Suddenly loses it.) THERE!
(The headline reads “HOLIDAY LINER SINKS MANY FEARED LOST.”)
SALAMANDER: Control yourself, Swann, you’ve gone mad!
SWANN: "Holiday Liner Sinks!" You say there’s a global w*r. Radiation everywhere. How can there be holiday liners? Tell me how! You’ve lied to us, haven’t you? Haven’t you!?
(SALAMANDER slowly turns away and sits down.)
SALAMANDER: In a way, Swann, yes. I . . . I had to.
SWANN: Had to!? What do you mean had to?
SALAMANDER: Well it’s true that- that the w*r is over, but have you any idea what happens to people who’ve been involved in a nuclear w*r? Have you?
SWANN: Course I haven’t, I’ve been down here.
SALAMANDER: Those who are lucky enough to escape the annihilation have their bodies eaten away by radiation poisoning. They’re deformed in mind and body.
SWANN: But this- this- this newspaper?
SALAMANDER: They have a kind of society, but it’s- it’s evil! Corrupt! You don’t think I could expose you to- to that sort of thing? Think of Mary a- and the other women.
SWANN: You could have told me, at least!
SALAMANDER: (defensively) I decided not to.
SWANN: You should have told me!
SALAMANDER: (defensively) I thought it was best!
SWANN: And what about the natural disasters we’ve been organising? The volcanoes, earthquakes?
SALAMANDER: Swann . . . they’re not fit to live.
SWANN: (horrified) You’re murdering them. k*lling them off!
SALAMANDER: I want you and the others to inherit the Earth, make a new world.
SWANN: Yes, I know all about that, but not at the price of wholesale m*rder!
SALAMANDER: (Stands.) It’s not m*rder! If you could see you would understand. It’s an act of mercy!
SWANN: There must be some other way.
SALAMANDER: NO!
SWANN: I won’t take your word any more. I want to see for myself.
(SALAMANDER thinks fast, grasping at straws.)
SALAMANDER: You- you- you’d be horrified.
SWANN: Maybe.
SALAMANDER: The radiation would k*ll you!
SWANN: I’ll chance that.
SALAMANDER: (Sighs.) Very well. But- but promise me one thing. (Points with his thumb.) You won’t tell the others.
SWANN: Why shouldn’t I?
(SALAMANDER’s true colors show, frightened at his lack of control.)
SALAMANDER: Because I am right and you are wrong!!
(He breathes rapidly, gesturing and stuttering, struggling to think of something a benevolent leader would say.)
SALAMANDER: You- you wouldn’t want to- you wouldn’t want to hurt them like that, huh?
SWANN: And if you’re lying, and I want to tell when I get back?
SALAMANDER: Well . . . how can I stop you? (Slowly moving away from his chair.) You’d better, ah . . . tell them you’re coming with me. Say er . . . say you’ve persuaded me.
(SWANN puts his clipboard down and sits in SALAMANDER’s chair. SALAMANDER grabs his arm.)
SALAMANDER: Swann, trust me, don’t go ahead with this, huh?
SWANN: I have to.
(SWANN looks betrayed. He switches on the intercom.)
7. WORK ROOM, UNDERGROUND
(Everyone looks up at SWANN’s voice over the system.)
SWANN: This is Swann speaking. It’s nearly a year since anyone went on the surface with Salamander.
(COLIN’s face lights up with wonder.)
COLIN: Salamander’s changed his mind. He’s going to take me with him.
8. CONTROL ROOM, UNDERGROUND
SWANN: There are more stores to bring down too. Salamander can’t do it all on his own. We’ll both be back soon with good news I hope.
9. WORK ROOM, UNDERGROUND
(COLIN is shattered.)
COLIN: Why not me? Why? I asked him. He turned me down.
MARY: Colin . . . .
COLIN: Why not me?
(He throws his clipboard down and runs to the door.)
COLIN: (screams) WHY NOT ME??
(He stops at the door, considering banging on it, but goes and yells into the intercom.)
COLIN: Salamander, take me with you! (Yells at the closed door.) TAKE ME WITH YOU!!
(MARY runs to him.)
MARY: He’s gone, it’s no good! Please Colin.
(She turns him to face her.)
COLIN: (distressed) Why didn’t he take me? I’ve got to get out of here, Mary. Got to get out!
10. INTERROGATION ROOM, RESEARCH STATION
VICTORIA: (whispering) Jamie? Jamie?
JAMIE: What?
(He starts to sit up and groans. VICTORIA hands him a cup.)
VICTORIA: Here, drink this. The headache soon goes.
(He grunts as he takes it and quickly swallows it all. He gives the cup back to VICTORIA, who puts it down. JAMIE looks around.)
JAMIE: Where are we?
VICTORIA: I don’t know.
(JAMIE stands up and takes her hand.)
JAMIE: Ah, let’s find out.
(He opens the door to find himself face to face with BENIK. JAMIE and VICTORIA back away, tense, as BENIK and a guard enter.)
BENIK: Don’t leave us so soon. We can have a little talk.
(BENIK walks past them and the guard closes the door.)
JAMIE: Where are we?
BENIK: You’re in the Australasian zone. (Sits on the desk.) I had you brought here especially.
JAMIE: Why?
BENIK: So that Salamander could ask you some questions.
JAMIE: For all the answers he’s gonna get he might as well have left us there. (Sits casually.)
BENIK: (snaps) Stand up when you talk to me!
JAMIE: You’ll get nowhere by shouting.
BENIK: (pleasantly) On the contrary. I’m going to get everything I want from you two.
JAMIE: We’ll not tell you a thing.
BENIK: (Laughs.) That’s good. I like that.
JAMIE: What?
BENIK: Spirit. Resistance. And you’ve got plenty of both, haven’t you, boy? Well I wonder how long you will last. Five minutes? No, a little longer, maybe. Ten, perhaps?
JAMIE: (Stands slowly.) What do you mean?
BENIK: Come now, you don’t think I’m just going to sit here and ask questions, do you?
JAMIE: You must have been a nasty little boy.
BENIK: Oh I was. But I had a very enjoyable childhood.
(JAMIE suddenly punches the guard in the stomach and knocks him to the ground with a chop to the neck. He looks at BENIK, but BENIK just laughs, holding VICTORIA with a g*n to her head. VICTORIA is too frightened to move.)
BENIK: Yes, I thought so. Spirit, plenty of spirit.
(He throws VICTORIA back to JAMIE, but keeps the g*n on them.)
BENIK: Oh, we’re going to enjoy ourselves, aren’t we?
(JAMIE holds VICTORIA protectively. The guard has gotten back up and points his g*n at them as well.)
BENIK: Now then . . . .
VICTORIA: I . . . I thought you were going to take us to see Salamander?
BENIK: Yes I will. But he’d expect me to do my little best first.
JAMIE: You lay a finger on her, I’ll k*ll you.
BENIK: (Laughs.) Will you? (Chuckles.) How? No. I think the time’s come for you to answer my questions, don’t you? Come here, girl!
(VICTORIA leans into JAMIE’s protection and shakes her head, frightened.)
BENIK: If you don't, I shall have to sh**t one of you. Oh, not a mortal wound. (Angles the g*n down.) In the leg, perhaps?
(VICTORIA gasps in horror.)
JAMIE: (softly) Better go. Don’t worry.
(VICTORIA slowly moves toward him, as tense as can be.)
BENIK: There. That’s better. (Grabs VICTORIA’s hair.) Oh, such pretty hair, don’t you think?
(He yanks her head back and she shouts.)
JAMIE: All right, leave her alone! (defeated) What do you want to know?
BENIK: Quite a lot! And you’re going to tell me everything. Aren’t you?
(BENIK pulls again and VICTORIA gasps.)
JAMIE: All right, yes!
BENIK: Who’s behind you? Is it Giles Kent?
(Suddenly the door opens and SALAMANDER walks in, followed by BRUCE. He glances at JAMIE and VICTORIA before addressing BENIK.)
SALAMANDER: Ah, so they’re here, eh?
(JAMIE holds VICTORIA protectively.)
BENIK: Salamander, I- I thought you were in Records?
SALAMANDER: Have they told you anything yet?
BENIK: Not yet.
SALAMANDER: Very well. Bruce and I will take over. (Approaches BENIK.) You may go, and er . . . take your little puppy dog with you, hm?
(BENIK purses his lips, frustrated, and quickly strides out of the room, followed by his guard. BRUCE closes the door. SALAMANDER stands behind the desk, leaning on it.)
SALAMANDER: Now . . . .
JAMIE: (Playing innocent.) We can’t tell you anything.
SALAMANDER: Of course not. We know everything. (Sits.) We know about Giles Kent . . . we know about the girl called Astrid, and we know about your friend the Doctor. (Smiles.)
(VICTORIA and JAMIE look at each other in horror. VICTORIA walks to the desk and leans over it.)
VICTORIA: I don’t believe you.
SALAMANDER: A childish plan to impersonate me. Yes the truth, isn’t it?
JAMIE: (Points and approaches.) Ah but he didn’t agree to it.
SALAMANDER: But you two were sent to the Central European ro- zone to stir up trouble.
VICTORIA: If you want to know the truth, Giles Kent told us a story and we weren’t sure. Before the Doctor could do anything we had to come here and find out what person you’re like.
(BRUCE listens carefully, thoughtfully.)
JAMIE: Yeah, and we found that out right enough.
SALAMANDER: You see Bruce? They just t*rrorists. Not very big fry, either. All this nonsense about proof against me.
VICTORIA: If you’re doing so much good for the world, why are you so afraid for your own life?
JAMIE: Aye, and why do you have so many enemies?
VICTORIA: Personal guards?
JAMIE: Your own food taster?
VICTORIA: And why destroy the one man people trusted, Alexander Denes?
JAMIE: Aye.
BRUCE: What do you mean, destroy?
VICTORIA: One of your men shot him!
BRUCE: Trying to escape?
VICTORIA: He shot him deliberately!
JAMIE: (Pointing.) Aye, and that girl Fariah. (Approaches BRUCE.) Well she was close to Salamander, she’d speak against him, I know she would.
SALAMANDER: Fariah is dead.
VICTORIA: Dead?
JAMIE: (contemptuously) You’ve had her m*rder*d too, have you?
(They both advance on him, but VICTORIA gets there first and raises her arm.)
VICTORIA: Why you . . . !
(SALAMANDER raises his arm to protect his face.)
SALAMANDER: (in the DOCTOR’s voice) Oh, Victoria! Don’t hit me!
(He falls out of his chair in his haste to get away. VICTORIA pauses, confused by the sudden change. He clears his throat, looking up at them, and stands up nervously.)
DOCTOR: You wouldn’t hit your old friend the Doctor, would you? (Spreads hands and clasps them.) I- I wouldn’t leave you in the tender mercy of S-Salamander.
JAMIE: Doctor?
(The DOCTOR’s face falls.)
DOCTOR: You don’t believe me? Oh. Huh.
(He clears his throat and makes a show of reaching into his jacket and pretending to pull something out. He wiggles his fingers and whistles Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, miming so fabulously you wonder for a moment if he really has an invisible recorder. BRUCE looks on, completely befuddled. The DOCTOR puts a hand to his ear and JAMIE points at him, whistling “Shave and a Haircut.” The DOCTOR finishes with “Two Bits” and points at JAMIE.)
DOCTOR: Only, you made me leave it in the t*rd.
(JAMIE and VICTORIA cry out and jump with joy.)
JAMIE: It is him!
VICTORIA: Oh, Doctor!
(They jump on him and hug him while he waves his hand, frantically trying to shush them.)
BRUCE: (Steps toward them.) "t*rd?"
(They quickly calm down.)
BRUCE: "t*rd," what’s that?
DOCTOR: Oh well- well, it’s a little place that we three have in common.
(JAMIE reaches over VICTORIA to grab the DOCTOR’s shoulder, still excited to see him. They are both still smiling broadly.)
DOCTOR: You must admit they thought I was Salamander to begin with.
BRUCE: Yes. I concede that. But there’s still no proof.
DOCTOR: No, but there’s enough doubt in your mind to make you go on asking questions, isn’t there? That’s why we came here.
11. HALLWAY, RESEARCH STATION
(BENIK walks angrily down the hallway.)
BENIK: I told you to let me know when Salamander was out of Records.
GUARD: But no one’s come out, sir.
(BENIK stops beside him and stares at him.)
BENIK: What did you say?
GUARD: He hasn’t come out, sir.
(BENIK is confused.)
12. TUNNEL, UNDERGROUND
(SALAMANDER leads SWANN past the elevator. SWANN stops.)
SWANN: Wait. (Points up.) What happens up there?
SALAMANDER: Oh, it ends in a ruined building. This is where I bring the stores, er . . . you would be safer here.
SWANN: Safer?
SALAMANDER: Yes, the radiation, I- I don’t think it filters down here.
(SALAMANDER turns and they continue through the tunnels.)
SWANN: I still want to see the surface.
SALAMANDER: You will, you will.
13. KENT’S CARAVAN
(KENT snaps his fingers as he paces.)
KENT: I should have insisted on going with him. Bruce should have taken me.
(ASTRID pulls her ascot out of her jacket and re-zips it.)
ASTRID: You know he doesn’t trust you.
KENT: He wouldn’t trust his own grandmother.
ASTRID: (Straightening her ascot.) Oh, never mind, Giles. We’ve come a long way. Months ago, well a few weeks ago even, nobody would have even listened to you. (Sits.)
KENT: Oh, maybe.
ASTRID: There’s no maybe about it.
KENT: Yeah perhaps you’re right. Bruce listens to us at last. He’s even prepared to ask questions, that’s fine, but I know Salamander. He’d talk his way out of the quicksand.
ASTRID: Well what else can we do? The guard’s still outside.
(KENT sits across from her.)
KENT: I must get into the Research Centre. I’ve got to make sure that Bruce understands the evidence, understands it, Astrid. Don’t you realize, he mightn’t know what he’s looking for. I know.
ASTRID: But we can’t attack the guard. It would only make matters worse.
KENT: Not if I was to give Bruce real evidence.
ASTRID: Giles, how long would it take you to get to the Research Station?
KENT: Well just a few minutes, I’ve got a pass. It’s just a matter of getting there.
(ASTRID looks away, biting her lip. She stands with determination and steps away, thinking.)
ASTRID: All right, I think I can help you. I’ll draw the guard off and leave you alone.
KENT: (Approaches.) You think you can do it?
ASTRID: (Smiles.) Yes, I think so.
(KENT tries to hide his excitement at the prospect of rebelling.)
KENT: But I thought you said we weren’t going to attack the guard?
ASTRID: (Smiling.) Oh, we’re not going to attack the guard. But there is going to be an attack. A fatal one.
14. TUNNEL, UNDERGROUND
(SALAMANDER lightly touches the wall to keep his bearings as they go. SWANN is still suspicious.)
SWANN: Where does this lead?
SALAMANDER: It goes on up and comes out in a field.
SWANN: What about radiation?
SALAMANDER: Here it’s almost negligible.
SWANN: You mean you could have brought others here from below?
(SALAMANDER doesn’t respond.)
SWANN: I don’t understand you. Don’t you realise what a break it would be for them, just moving away from that underground tomb once in a while?
(SALAMANDER stops in front of three boxes piled against the wall.)
SALAMANDER: You seem to forget, Swann, I’ve brought people up here before! There’s always an element of risk!
SWANN: I still want to have a look at these people you say are living on the surface.
(He looks around and points to another tunnel.)
SWANN: Where does that lead?
SALAMANDER: Oh, that’s a dead end. It’s a place I sometimes rest. (Snaps.) It’s very hard work, you know, bringing all the-!
SWANN: (interrupts) Yes, I know that. (Nods.) This way, then?
SALAMANDER: You- you sure you . . . you won’t change your mind, huh?
(As he speaks, he reaches behind his back and grabs a piece of metal piping off the pile of boxes. SWANN shakes his head and walks past SALAMANDER. SALAMANDER raises the metal pipe to his chest and grips it with both hands before following SWANN.)
15. KENT’S CARAVAN
(ASTRID smashes the window with her fist and quickly steps away from it. A guard immediately opens the door and points his g*n at ASTRID.)
GUARD: What’s going on here?
(ASTRID gasps, breathing hard, and points across the room.)
ASTRID: He’s been shot! Through the window.
(KENT lies motionless on his back, draped over the couch, eyes staring. A splotch of viscous liquid stains his forehead. The guard motions ASTRID back with his g*n.)
GUARD: All right, stand back.
(He keeps his side to ASTRID, for once not turning his back, and kneels to examine KENT.)
GUARD: He’s finished.
(ASTRID quietly sneaks out the door and slips away.)
GUARD: Better get a doctor anyway, just in case.
(The guard notices ASTRID is gone and quickly looks out the door.)
GUARD: Hey! Come back!
(He runs after her. KENT lies motionless a second longer, then looks to make sure the guard is gone and stands. He touches the sticky substance on his forehead with two fingers and licks it off before creeping out.)
16. BRUSH ON THE EDGE OF A FIELD
(The guard runs down the field along the edge of the brush. ASTRID appears out of the bushes and watches him go. She turns and pushes through sticks, bushes, and small evergreen trees. She stops, hearing a faint voice.)
SWANN: (faintly) Hellllp! Somebody help me!
(ASTRID switches direction and creeps toward the voice. She pushes through a thick patch of evergreens and stops to listen again.)
SWANN: (faintly) Heeellllp!
(She continues maneuvering through bushes and briars. The voice is suddenly clearer.)
SWANN: Help . . . ! Somebody help me . . . .
(ASTRID crawls to SWANN, lying on the ground, and gives a small gasp of horror and pity. She takes his shoulders and helps him sit up. She looks at her hand now wet with blood and gasps in horror.)
ASTRID: (angrily) Who did this to you?
SWANN: (breathing heavily) A man named . . . Sssalamander.
(ASTRID looks up, her face full of horror.)
ASTRID: (whispers) Salamander?
