[Announcer] Here's Lucy,
starring Lucille Ball.
Co-starring Gale Gordon
and Lucie Arnaz.
Brought to you by;
Lever Bothers
makers of Lifebuoy.
The deodorant soap with
cool, clean, refreshing mint.
Boo!
Ahh! Ahh! Ahh! Ahh!
Lucille, It's only me.
Oh Harry, how could
you do that to me?
I can't take shocks like
that. I'm very delicate.
You're about as
delicate as John Wayne.
Alright Harry, are we gonna
start the day off like this?
No, no, I take it all back.
Now Lucille, I'm in much too good
a mood to bicker with you today.
Ray Veile has invited
me to his new ski lodge
in Snowmass, Colorado
for an entire week.
Oh, I can hardly wait
to get on those slopes.
Do you ski?
Do I ski?
I'll have you know that
I'm Borrego Springs
answer to Jean-Claude Killy.
I didn't know that.
Gee, you know I've
never been skiing.
Oh, lucky you.
Oh, a whole week up in
the snow and in Colorado.
Oh, how wonderful.
Oh, no you don't.
I wasn't hinting to go along.
You can't blame
me for being envious.
No, I suppose not.
Well, let's get
to work, shall we.
Gee, you know, I haven't
seen snow in so long.
When I was growing up in Jamestown
we used to have snow all the time.
I'd wake up in the morning
and see it coming
down outside the window
and I'd hurry and get
dressed and get my sled.
I had a little red sled
my grandfather made me,
and then I'd always try to
be the first kid out on the hill
to get onto that new snow.
Remember belly-whapping?
Ha-ha! Of course I do.
You know, my brother
and I had a toboggan.
Oh, we were the envy of
the entire neighborhood.
- Oh, I'll bet you were.
- Yeah.
- Remember making a snowman?
- Yeah!
And snow forts, yeah, and
then we'd have snow ball fights.
Oh yeah, I suppose you
put rocks in your snow ba*ls.
Certainly not.
A few stones maybe...
Ooh, I used to love
making snow angels.
Remember you'd lie
back in a big snow bank
and then you'd move
your arms to make wings.
I never did that.
Oh, you don't know
what you missed!
Oh and you know, we have
a big pond near our house
and it froze over all of the
time and I went ice skating there
every winter.
Gee, you now that's a
thrill you never forget,
the sound of your
skates on the ice.
Yeah.
Oh, and that crisp air.
Hmmm.
[Sings] When you are in love,
it's the loveliest
night of the year.
Stars twinkle upon
and you almost can
touch them from here.
Words fall into rhyme
anytime you are holding me near.
Get back to your desk
or get fired and
thrown out on your ear.
Lucille, Lucille, Lucille what
are you whimpering about!
I wish I could be
up in the snow.
I miss the snow!
Are you gonna be
like this all week?
Probably, yes!
Oh please, stop crying, Lucille.
Stop it!
I give up! I give up!
If you'll snap out of it so
we can get some work done.
I, I'll take you with me.
Oh, Harry!
Harry! You're the sweetest
brother-in-law anybody ever had,
and will you take Kim?
- And Kim.
- Oh!
And can we take Mary Jane?
Don't press your luck!
Oh, alright.
Now, I insist on
paying for half the gas.
And I insist on you
paying for all the gas.
- Oh well, whatever you say.
- Yeah, fine.
Now, can we get some work done?
Of course!
As soon as I get
my shopping done.
I have to get a whole
new ski wardrobe.
I haven't got a
thing to wear, Harry.
Hello.
Wrong number.
Come in!
Good heavens.
What time do they run
you up the flagpole?
Alright, never mind that.
What in the world are you doing!
I'm trying to get
used to my skis.
Well, where did
you get those things?
They don't use leather
bindings anymore.
- They don't?
- No.
Well, I spent all my money on ski
clothes I couldn't afford new skis.
I'm surprised the
museum lent them to you.
I borrowed them from
Mary Jane's uncle.
Well get them off, will you.
I wanna get some skiing in!
Oh, that's right, they
lower you at sundown.
Just get them off and hurry.
I'll meet you down in the lobby.
For heaven’s sake.
Took me an hour and
a half to get 'em on.
Albert, get in that shower.
- Here's your Lifebuoy.
- Oh, all right.
Scrub.
Hey, that's mint.
Oh boy, Lifebuoy's got mint!
I can scrub my nails with
it, clean my ears with it.
Go Lifebuoy with
minty mint, mint!
Now that wasn't so bad was it?
Oh, it was all right.
Lifebuoy deodorant
soap with mint.
Hysterically refreshing.
Ah, too bad. He-he.
You're a beginner, huh.
Uh no, sir. I'm
a ski instructor.
Well, those are the brakes.
- Good morning, Uncle Harry.
- Oh, uh, good morning.
Oh, it's so beautiful out there.
I've just been taking a
walk enjoying the scenery.
I've been enjoying
the scenery too.
Where's mamma?
She's late, as usual.
You know, I'm going to
give her about two minutes
then I'm going
skiing without her,
after all that's what
we came up to do is ski.
- Well, Uncle Harry.
- Huh!
- Here comes Dinah Shore!
- Where?
Oh, Uncle Harry what a
shame mom isn't her to see her.
Dinah Shore's her
very favorite singer!
She has every
record she ever made.
Well, that's your mother's
fault for being late.
I think I'll go over
and say hello to Dinah.
You know her!
Well of course.
My butcher's cousin's son's best
friend is engaged to her manicurist.
That close, huh.
Oh, listen Uncle Harry, I'm gonna
call mom on the house phone
and tell her to get right down
here. Don't let Dinah get away.
No no no.
Miss Shore, I hope you don't
think it presumptuous of me.
My name is Harry Carter
and we actually know
each other in a way.
We do?
Yes, you see, your manicurist
is engaged to the best friend
of the son of the
cousin of my butcher.
Oh, then we're
practically family.
Yes, I think we, oh, I
must tell you Ms. Shore,
I have admired
you for a long while.
I used to listen to you on
the Eddie Cantor radio show.
Could we let that
be our little secret?
Oh, yeah, yeah.
You know miss Shore, I have
every record you ever made.
Every one?
- Every one.
- Oh my.
Yes. Unfortunately I can't
play the 78's anymore.
I left them on the window sill and
the sun melted them all together.
- Oh, that's a shame.
- Yes.
Well, it was certainly nice
meeting you, Mr. Carter.
I do wanna go out
and get a little sun
and get on the
slopes and ski a little.
Oh, of course, I understand.
Ms. Shore, could you wait
just a couple of more minutes?
Wait for what?
Well, my sister-in-law,
she's upstairs.
She'll be coming right down
and she's even a
bigger fan than I am,
and her 78's aren't melted.
I just don't see how I could
turn down the sister-in-law
of a man whose
butcher's cousin's son
is the best friend of the man
who's engaged to my manicurist.
I just couldn't turn 'em down.
Oh yeah, of course I
wanna meet Dinah Shore!
Oh, please keep her there
so I could get her autograph.
Well, I'll be there
as soon as I can.
Yeah, I'm having
trouble getting my skis off.
Never mind what I'm doing
with my skis on in my room!
Uh well, when is the wedding?
What wedding?
Your manicurist.
Oh well, sometime
next month I guess.
Oh, that's nice.
Are you going to
sing at the wedding.
Yes.
Oh, what are you gonna sing?
Uh, I'm gonna sing, "Because".
Would you sing a
little of it for us now?
[Sings] Because-
I have to go.
Ahh!
Hi, Dinah! Hi!
That was my mother.
Oh gosh! It was
beautiful out there today.
I just feel great!
- My legs are k*lling me.
- Oh.
Where's your mother?
I don't know.
Every time I saw her on the
slope she was lying flat on her back.
Well, at least she got a
chance to make snow angels.
Ooh!
Hi, mom!
Did you have fun?
Fun, oh sure.
I'd have more fun if I'd stayed
home and laid down on the freeway.
Well, what went wrong?
Everything!
I ran into so many people the ski
patrol finally gave me my own slope.
Mom, what happened?
Oh, everybody made fun of me,
and worst of all I didn't get to
see Dinah Shore once all day long.
Well, you're not apt to
find her on the bunny run.
You know, she skis
with the grown-ups.
Yeah well, I can't help
it if I'm just learning.
- Everybody has to be
a beginner sometimes.
- Oh well.
You had to start
somewhere yourself.
- Lucille, there she is.
- What?
- There who is?
- Dinah Shore.
Where!
There is where she is!
- Oh!
- Ahh!
Oh-h*!
Oh!
Oh, Miss Shore, I'm so sorry.
Oh you, oh, but
now that you're here,
could I please have
your autograph?
I've been looking for
you all day, Miss Shore.
- I was all over the slopes.
- Get this person away from me!
Help!
Your shower is ready, sir.
Mm-hmm.
Your Lifebuoy, sir.
Thank you, Marchmont.
Mmm. Lifebuoy with mint.
Refreshing minty mint.
Rub it on my arms and my face!
Cool, refreshing Lifebuoy!
With mint, mint, mint!
Did you enjoy your shower, sir?
Same as usual, Marchmont.
Lifebuoy deodorant
soap with mint.
Hysterically refreshing.
Why are we stopping?
They sometimes have to let
people off and on, you know.
Oh.
My, wasn't it a lucky coincidence
that we got the same ski chair.
Oh, lucky.
You know I don't believe we
were ever properly introduced.
I'm Lucille Carter but
you can call me Lucy.
Thank you.
- I'm Dinah Shore.
- Oh I know, I know, I know.
You know actually, I'm very
glad to have this chance to chat.
I kind of wanted to apologize
for what happened yesterday.
Oh, that's alright.
I expected to take a few falls
up here but not in the lobby.
Gee, I wonder
what's taking so long.
Maybe there's a
mechanical failure.
A mechanical failure!
Well then, how do we get down?
Oh well, don't worry about it.
There's nothing wrong with a lift,
they'll send the ski patrol for me.
Us!
Us.
You know, I don't know if it makes
any difference to you or not but,
you have always
been my favorite singer.
Oh, thank you.
In fact I have every
record you ever made.
I know.
And your 78's aren't melted.
No.
Oh, my all-time favorites were
- uh, "Buttons and Bows", - Oh.
- "Blues in the Night".
- Oh, you like that?
Oh, yeah. "Dear Hearts
and Gentle People",
"Pen in Hand" and
"Man Around the House."
Uh, why didn't you like "Shoo
Fly Pie" and "Apple Pan Downy"?
Oh, I liked it but when it
came out I was on a diet.
Oh, that's funny.
Say, would you mind singing
something for me right now?
Here?
Yeah well, it would
help pass the time
and it would be such a
thrill for me, I can't tell you.
Oh no.
- I don't think so.
- Oh, please.
No, I really don't feel like it.
- I mean it... Well, alright
if you don't feel like
it I won't pester you.
What would you like to hear?
Oh, anything! Anything at all.
[Sings] Did you ever lie
and listen to the rainfall?
Did you ever eat a
homemade apple pie?
Did you ever watch a
child while he's praying?
Just don't let the
good life pass you by.
Did you ever hold a
hand to stop its trembling?
Did you ever watch
the sun desert the sky?
Did you ever hold a loved
on while he's sleeping?
Friend don't let the
good life pass by.
Man was made for
loving, not for buying.
Gold can't give you
things you really need.
Just look my friend
there's happiness in living.
Somewhere between
broke and being free.
Did you ever see the
funny side of losing?
Did you ever sit right
down and have a cry?
Did you ever take the
time to help your neighbors?
Just don't let the
good life pass you by.
Oh! Oh!
Oh, that was so beautiful!
Just imagine my very
own Dinah Shore concert!
Oh, how about
singing another one?
How about "Blues in the Night"?
Okay, uhm...
[Sings] My momma done told me.
Whap!
I was doing the orchestra.
Oh.
[Sings] When I was in pigtails.
Whap!
[Sings] My momma
done told me, hon.
A man's gonna sweet-talk.
Yeah.
[Sings] with your big eyes.
Yeah.
[Sings] But when that
sweet talkin' is done,
a man is a two-faced
a worrisome thing
who leave you to sing,
the blues in the night.
Come on, sing, sing.
[Sings] Now the rains a fallin'.
Hear the train a callin' Hooey.
- Wew, wew, wew, wew.
- My momma done told me.
That's a train whistle.
[Sings] Hear that
lonesome whistle.
Blowin' across the trestle.
Hooey, my momma done
told me, a-hooey, a-hooey.
Old clickety clack is
echoing back the blues
in the night.
I never thought I'd
wanna forget that song.
I loved it, I loved it.
[Sings] What a dance do they do!
Lordy how I'm telling you.
They don't need no band.
Do-wah, do-wah.
They keep time by
clappin' their hand...
Just as happy as a
cow chewin' on the cud
when the people beat their
feet on the Mississippi mud.
Got them without a shirt.
Without a shirt, without
a shirt, without a shirt!
Hear that echo?
Where is that ski patrol?
I don't know and I don't care!
Never had so much
fun in my whole life!
Just think I am singing
with Dinah Shore!
Oh, I wish my friend were
here. They wouldn’t believe it.
Mine wouldn't either.
Do you know, I'm getting cold.
Boy, me too.
Uh-oh.
Oh boy. That's all we need.
- Listen, you know something?
- Hmm.
With this snow, they're
gonna have trouble finding us?
Trouble finding us?
Yeah, with the way
it's coming down, we...
We're liable to
be here all night.
- All night?
- Well, maybe.
What do you mean all night?
I don't wanna be
up here all night!
Wait Lucy, now don't
cry. Please don't cry.
I don't wanna be
up here all night!
Please Lucy, you mustn't cry.
Oh, you're right, I mustn't
cry it'll make little icicles.
- That's right, and
crying doesn't do any good.
- No.
On the other hand, it
doesn't do any harm.
Oh yeah.
It'll give us something to
do before we freeze to death.
Listen Dinah, you
know something.
What?
I don't think they're ever
gonna come to get us.
Yes they are. You
just gotta believe.
They should've been here by now.
They're never gonna
come and get us.
Why are you taking
off your skis, Lucy?
'Cause I can't
stand it any longer.
I'm gonna jump and
ski back to the lodge.
You gotta be kidding!
That's a big jump down there.
I don't care.
Now, are you gonna jump with me?
Well, I would except for
one thing, I'm a coward.
That's a big jump!
Last one back to the ski
lodge is a frozen rotten egg!
Hey, they got it fixed.
Bye Lucy!
Your shower is ready, dear.
Here's your Lifebuoy.
Thank you, mother.
Lifebuoy with mint.
Mmm. You're what's happening.
Cool Lifebuoy with
mint, you're too much.
Groovy, refreshing
Lifebuoy with mint, mint, mint!
How was your shower, dear?
It was a shower, mother.
Lifebuoy deodorant
soap with mint,
hysterically refreshing.
Here's Lucy was
brought to you by;
Lever Brothers,
makers of Lifebuoy.
The deodorant soap with
cool, clean, refreshing mint.
