All That Remains (2024)

Post by bunniefuu »

(soft tense music)

(soft tense music continues)

(morse code beeping)

(dark tense music)

(alarm buzzing)

(tone blaring)

- [Radio Announcer] We

interrupt this broadcast with a

message from the Federal

Emergency Management System.

Local residents are

advised to immediately

tune into local news outlets.

(radio static buzzing)

- [Anchorwoman] We're

obviously looking at a very-

(g*nsh*t fires)

disturbing live shot here.

We're working on-

(radio static buzzing)

Can someone get a hold of Sean?

Okay.

We've got the

producer on the phone.

Sean, we're on the air now.

What can you tell us?

- [Sean] They're all

over my screens, Lynn.

They're-they're

all over the city.

They're, oh my god.

(glass shattering)

- [Anchorwoman] Sean?

(frequency buzzing)

- [Radio Announcer] Residents

of the United States

are strongly encouraged to

take the following precautions

to avoid detection.

Sanitize and cover

all open wounds.

Barricade all windows and doors.

Stay inside after dark,

and clean up any

traces of blood.

(creature snarling)

(tense eerie music)

- Joan?

(Sophie's Mom sobbing)

(footsteps clomping)

- [Woman Over Radio]

Red fire station.

(radio static buzzing)

Plenty of food, water-

(radio static buzzing)

(garbled audio playing)

Look for the barricade

in the high school parking lot.

All are welcome.

(static buzzing)

(footsteps approaching)

- Oh!

Okay. Drawing here.

- Sorry.

(Joan chuckles)

- You okay?

- Bad dream.

- Again?

(Joan sighs)

- You weren't there

when I woke up.

I panicked.

- I can't hover 24/7.

I have things to do.

- Like what?

All you do is sit there

and listen to the radio.

- Someone has to do it.

- Stupid.

- [Joan] Hmm?

- All you do is sit

and listen to the radio

so you can work on that.

- So?

- What's the point?

- I don't know.

Does there have to be a point?

It's something to do that

isn't totally meaningless.

- A tree?

- No, not the tree.

The drawing.

Why do you care?

- I don't.

Doesn't change anything.

- Go bother Mom.

- I can't.

She's sulking.

- Oh.

It's just a room, Soph.

- No, it's not.

- I was thinking

about her earlier.

While sketching.

- Mom?

- No.

Taylor.

You can almost see her

trying to dance under it.

Sophie!

- Why would you do that?

I don't,

can't.

- Soph.

(body crashing)

(tense eerie music)

- [Sophie] Joan.

- [Joan] Stay here.

- [Sophie] Joan!

- Stay put.

(footsteps clambering)

(tense eerie music continues)

Soph.

Soph.

Sophie?

Soph, you there?

Sophie?

- I'm here.

- [Joan] I-I need your help.

- Are you with Mom?

- [Joan] Upstairs.

Bathroom.

- Okay.

- [Joan] Get a bag.

- What?

- [Joan] A bag.

- Wait, why?

- [Joan] (sighs) I-

- No.

- Soph.

- No.

- [Joan] Sophie.

In the corner, under Dad's

duffel bag, there's another.

- It's better they

don't come out.

- [Joan] The bag, Soph.

The black one.

(dark tense music)

(bag rustling)

You got it?

- Yeah.

- [Joan] Grab some bleach.

(knocking on door)

- Joan?

(door slams)

(dark foreboding music)

Joan?

(birds and insects chirping)

(body thumping)

(bleach splashing)

(Sophie crying)

- Hey, hey.

We can clean up after

we clean inside.

We don't have a lot of time.

(water splashing)

She must have wanted

to see outside.

Before.

(Joan sighs)

(water splashing)

(hammering nails)

(tense eerie music)

(bag rustling)

(sneaker squeaks)

(body crashes)

(frequency humming)

(hammering wood)

(soft tense music)

You all done?

(water pouring)

(Sophie crying)

It'll go quicker if you help.

We don't have much time.

Come on.

Come on!

Just grab the corners.

- Okay.

(Sophie gasps)

- [Sophie] I can't!

- We have to.

Just grab the corners.

The sooner we go, the

sooner we'll get back.

- It's too late!

- Not if we're fast, okay?

Just come on.

- No!

Don't hurt her!

- Sophie.

- We can wait til tomorrow.

- Remember what happened to Dad?

- The fence, it'll keep us safe!

- It's just a deterrent.

It won't stop a hungry one.

- It will, it will!

Please let me turn it on!

Please.

Thank you.

What are you doing?

- I'll radio in when I'm

back and inside the fence.

Then you can turn it on.

- It's too late.

- I'll be quick.

Just keep your headset on.

(bag rustling)

- Come in, Joan.

Hello, Joan?

(crickets chirping)

- [Joan] Sophie, turn

the fence back on.

(soft tense music)

(footsteps rustling)

(Joan struggling)

- [Garbled Voice]

There, hold her down!

(Joan struggling)

- [Joan] Wait!

(tense eerie music)

- Joan?

I turned it back on.

(dark tense music)

Are you here yet?

Joan?

(birds chirping)

Joan?

(soft tense music)

(soft tense music continues)

(soft tense music continues)

Joan?

Is that you?

- [Joe] Infinite complacency,

men went to and fro

over this globe about

their little affairs.

(static buzzing)

- Hello?

- Joan?

Come in, Joan!

You there?

- [Rebecca] Can

someone come get me?

I won't complain

or slow you down.

Anyone?

- [Joe] No one gave a thought

to the older worlds of space

as sources-

- Joan?

Come in, Joan.

- [Joe] I was curious to recall

some of the members-

(static buzzing)

of those departed-

- Joan?

You there?

Joan, come in!

- [Woman] I-I can't.

No.

I won't.

I'm going to k*ll myself.

(woman laughing)

Ah.

There.

I said it.

(headphones crash)

(soft solemn music)

Go now to be reunited

with Barbara and Richard,

who was the first to go.

b*stard always

was the lucky one.

I can't think of anyone else

I'd wanna waste my breath on.

I buried what's left

of him in the backyard.

I just needed it to

stop following us,

but it never stops!

This isn't a cry for help.

I just need someone

to clean up the mess.

(g*nsh*t fires)

(creatures snarling)

(alarm sounding)

(alarm stops)

(birds chirping)

(creature chittering)

(stake squelches)

(bleach pouring)

(water pours)

- [Joe] I began to explain

my view of our position.

He listened at first,

but as I went on, the

interest dawning in his eyes

gave place to the former stare,

and his regard wandered from me.

"This must be the beginning

of the end," he said,

interrupting me.

"The end, the great and

terrible day of the Lord."

(Joe coughing)

"Be a man," said I.

"You're scared out of your wits.

"What good is religion if

it collapses under calamity?

"Do you think God has

exempted Waybridge?

"He is not an insurance agent."

For a time, he sat

in blank silence.

"But how can we escape?"

He asked suddenly.

"They are invulnerable.

"They are pitiless."

(radio static buzzing)

(static undulating)

Those in Redding,

Bricker, and Red County,

seek immediate shelter.

I ain't sh1tting you, kids.

This neighborhood

is under attack.

Anyone within 20 miles of

lat long 34 negative 92

is gonna get a mouthful.

They're dropping canisters.

The lat long is 34 negative 92.

Turn your songbooks

to 34 negative 92.

ETA is, well, right about now.

(planes whooshing)

(tense foreboding music)

I'm guessing H12 gas, so be

sure and seal up any cracks.

It's nasty stuff.

But a few gulps won't

k*ll you, I think.

Or was that H13?

Ah.

Either way, you're gonna

get one hell of a rash.

(door slams)

(gas hissing)

(tense foreboding

music continues)

(gas hissing)

(door creaking)

(door slams)

(Sophie coughing)

(Sophie retching)

(Sophie shrieking)

(Sophie coughs)

(soft solemn music)

(Sophie exhales)

(soft solemn music continues)

(birds chirping)

(door clangs)

All right.

Should be over now.

Anybody make it?

Any survivors in or around

Bricker, Red, or Redding?

This isn't a trick.

It's just nice to know

that someone's listening.

Fine.

Didn't wanna talk

to you anyways.

Sorry.

Just, uh, the only one.

And it gets old.

(Joe coughing)

It's currently 78

degrees, dewpoint of 72.

We had this storm the other day.

Looks like it'll be the

only one for a while.

(chuckles) What do I know?

My NOAA weather radio

went out years ago.

I just make this sh*t up.

(morse code beeping)

(Joe gasps)

F- a duck!

What-what, hold on.

I don't know that.

Just a sec.

Are you there?

Hello? Hello?

You still there?

Please.

This-this is Joe.

My name is Joe.

Are you there?

(morse code beeping)

Oh yes.

How are you still breathing?

(morse code beeping)

Oh, so you're military.

Anyone else with you?

You don't, you don't

gotta answer that.

Me, holed up in a library,

surrounded by moldy books.

That's probably why

I got this cough.

I assume you heard my reading.

What do you think?

(morse code beeping)

Oh.

Well.

I don't normally

take requests, but,

but I could make an exception.

So long as it's something

we both can enjoy.

Any suggestions?

(soft music)

"And so the prince traveled

from his father's kingdom,

"taking only his birthright

and his two hunting dogs.

"Now, El Misser, Miss,"

I'm just gonna call

the young prince

El Mariachi, or something.

I can't pronounce, I mean,

how's a kid supposed,

(clears throat).

"El Mariachi sang arrogant

songs of victories yet to be,

"and to ward off the

darkness, his dogs howled

"alongside him, but

their howling stopped

"once they neared

the gates of Loesch.

"The dark gates flashed with

fire and echoed thunder.

"El Mariachi shielded his eyes,

"and his dogs cowered low.

"Nearby, an old hermit, who

had watched the young prince

"approached and called

out, 'I would go no further

"'if I were you, El

Mariachi, for the land beyond

"'is the domain

of the Dark Ones.

"'You have not seen

them, but they see you.

"'They hunger for chaos

and pain, your pain.

"'Already, they are

perched upon the gates,

"their fangs dripping blood'-"

(radio beeping)

(dark tense music)

(tense music continues)

(Sophie grunts)

"To mash and grind

your furry friends

"into dogling soup."

(morse code beeping)

Did you miss something?

Don't you have a backup

generator or something?

(morse code beeping)

There you go then.

Now don't interrupt.

This is very therapeutic for me.

(Sophie groans)

"Withholding his anger, El

Mariachi reminded the old man,

"'Nothing you say

will dissuade me.'

"The hermit looked down

and said, 'Very well.

"'If you must go,

I shall bless you

"'with a gift.'

(morse code beeping)

(dark tense music)

What the hell does that mean?

(morse code beeping)

You have an electric fence?

Are you wanting me to

stop until you get back?

(Sophie groans)

I don't know what you want.

You have a generator, right?

(creature snarling outside)

I can wait until you come back.

(tense foreboding music)

Hello?

Okay.

I'm gonna keep reading, then.

(Joe clears throat)

"'What gift could you

bestow on a noble prince

"'as brave as I?'

"'Your birthright may

have brought you here,'

"the hermit spoke.

"'But common men beset by foes

"'need other tricks and powers.

"'If the dark ones catch

you, they will k*ll you.'

"The hermit pulled a

ringlet from his cloak

"and gave it to the prince.

"'But first, they

must catch you.'"

(radio static buzzing)

(crickets chirping)

(tense music)

(Sophie grunting)

(static buzzes)

"He gagged as the rancid

odor filled his nostrils."

- [Sophie] Joe?

- [Joe] A kid?

Hello?

- It's me.

- [Joe] The-the army guy?

- That's my dad.

- [Joe] Well, where's he?

- [Sophie] He's, I need your

help with this generator.

- [Joe] Oh, okay.

Sure, uh.

Um.

- What do I do first?

- [Joe] Is there a button?

- [Sophie] Yeah.

- [Joe] Push it

three or four times,

and then pull the cord.

(cord whirring)

(tense suspenseful music)

(Sophie screams)

Run, kid!

(tense dramatic music)

(Sophie shrieks)

(Sophie grunts)

- I'm bleeding.

- [Joe] Cover it up, quick.

(glass shattering)

(creature snarls)

- It's inside.

- [Joe] It'll find

you if you don't get

that bleeding stopped.

It-it can't be

anywhere near blood.

(footsteps clambering)

(creature snarling)

(footsteps approaching)

(door creaks)

(soft tense music)

(tense music continues)

(floorboard creaks)

(floorboard creaks)

(tense music continues)

(creature snuffling)

(bottle thumps)

(creature snarling)

You gotta cover the blood smell.

(creature snuffling)

(tense foreboding music)

(Sophie cries)

(creature snarling)

(creature rustling)

(creature snarls)

(creature roars)

(glass shattering)

(footsteps receding)

(creature shrieks)

You still there, kid?

- I think it's gone.

(tense music continues)

(Sophie panting)

- [Joe] All good?

- Yeah.

- [Joe] Damn, kid.

(alarm sounding)

- It's still out there.

It's trapped inside the fence.

What do I do?

- [Joe] I wouldn't turn it off.

Especially if it's

making a fuss.

(alarm stops)

You don't wanna attract more.

(Sophie whimpers)

Hey, hey.

Don't fret.

Come sunrise, it'll-it'll

hide out somewhere,

and you can, you can

board everything back up.

No trouble.

- What if it hides

inside the house?

- [Joe] It won't.

- How do you know?

- [Joe] It just won't, okay?

Joe knows things.

It's late, kid.

Best thing to do now,

just-just get some sleep.

(tense music)

(creature snarling outside)

(birds chirping)

(static buzzes)

You good, kid?

- Yeah, I'm fine.

- [Joe] Good.

So, uh, are you,

I mean, is there-is

there anyone with you?

Your-your dad, or a-

- No.

- [Joe] Oh.

Sorry, it's, it's just,

well, it's been a while

since I've talked to anyone.

I-I was hoping,

well, never mind.

Hey, you must be

pretty tough, huh?

- I don't know.

- [Joe] Well, if you're

making it on your own,

you're like El Mariachi.

- What?

- [Joe] The young prince, taking

on the Dark Ones of Loesch.

That's it.

You are a badass little prince.

- I'm a girl.

- [Joe] Irrelevant.

You, uh, cool with the story?

The-the book?

- What?

Yeah, I guess.

- [Joe] Big mess in there?

- Yeah.

- [Joe] Is it all right

if I stay on the air

while you fix things up?

- Sure.

(soft tense music)

(glass crunching)

(soft tense music continues)

(soft tense music continues)

(solemn music)

(solemn music continues)

(solemn music continues)

(solemn music continues)

(solemn music continues)

(eerie music)

(eerie music continues)

(soft solemn music)

(soft solemn music continues)

(book thumps)

(Sophie panting)

(Sophie screams)

(book thumps)

- [Joe] Uh, everything okay?

- Sorry.

- [Joe] You wanna talk about it.

- [Sophie] No, not really.

- [Joe] Okay.

I'm glad we switched the books.

In the other one, the ending,

it's a tad too convenient.

Not how real life works.

Don't know if he'll

make it in the end,

but El Mariachi seems to

be having a good time.

I mean, sure, he's

scared shitless,

but at least he's

got those dogs.

- We've got nobody.

- [Joe] You got me.

- I don't even know you.

- [Joe] Well, I got you.

How about that?

- Why do you even bother?

- [Joe] With what?

Talking to you?

- Reading.

- [Joe] Why do you listen?

- That's not an answer.

- [Joe] Maybe I

just like to read.

Does there have to be a reason?

- I don't know.

My sister said the same thing.

She likes to draw.

- [Joe] Hmm, so what do you do?

- What do you mean?

- [Joe] Well, you

don't read or draw,

so what do you do?

- I never said I

don't do those things.

- [Joe] Well, do you?

- Not anymore.

- [Joe] But you did?

- [Sophie] I guess.

- [Joe] Okay, so why?

- (scoffs) That's different.

That was before.

- [Joe] Then what's

wrong with now?

I like now.

- You're insane!

How can you say that?

We've got nobody.

We're just sitting

here waiting to die.

- [Joe] When has that

ever not been the case?

- What?

- [Joe] We're all dying, kid.

Whether it's here, 20 years ago,

or 100 years from now,

we're all waiting to die.

- It's not the same.

- [Joe] It's all relative.

The linchpin is how

we get through it.

I guess that's why I read.

You want me to start?

(soft music)

Kid?

- Sure.

- [Joe] Okay.

"They set up camp

near the cliff's edge.

"Even in the under lands,

the stars twinkled earnestly,

"lulling the prince to sleep."

(motor rumbling)

(motor sputters)

(gas swishing)

(gas pouring)

(objects clattering)

(creature snarling)

(Sophie sighs)

(creature rustling)

(Sophie panting)

- When they catch you,

they will k*ll you.

But first, they must catch you.

(dark tense music)

(creature rustling)

(dark tense music continues)

(creature rustling)

(objects clattering)

(object clangs)

(Sophie shrieks)

(creature snarling)

(creature growls)

(objects clattering)

(g*nsh*t fires)

(creature roars)

(g*nshots firing)

(creature shrieking)

(dark tense music)

(creature howling)

(soft solemn music)

(gas pouring)

(creature howling)

Joe, are you here?

Come in, Joe.

(clears throat) El Mariachi

calling in for Joe.

Joe, are you here?

(soup splatting)

(tense foreboding music)

(bowl clattering)

(Sophie panting)

(soft tense music)

- [Joe] Joe here.

Are you okay?

- Yeah.

- [Joe] Are you sure?

- No.

They're everywhere.

And I'm scared.

- [Joe] Hey, you're safe, kid.

You've got that fence.

- No.

Nothing can survive out there.

They k*ll everything.

- [Joe] What's going on?

Did something happen?

- They're everywhere.

There's no way she's alive.

They got her.

- [Joe] Whoa, hold on.

You-you don't know that.

- But I-

- [Joe] But you don't know that.

You're guessing.

Just breathe.

(tense emotional music)

- They must have.

They got everyone else.

- [Joe] Um, I'm sorry,

kid, but listen.

You've got your pal, Joe.

(chuckles) I'm here.

- I know.

- [Joe] No seriously.

You and me.

We're friends.

Right?

Right, kid?

- [Sophie] Yeah, of course.

- [Joe] Then you

shouldn't give up hope.

Never give up hope.

You got that?

- Yeah.

- [Joe] I mean, I had

to hope for a long time

that someone was

listening when I read.

And there you were.

Speaking of listening,

have I lost you?

- Does Redding have a library?

- [Joe] What?

I don't know.

Never been.

Probably.

- What about Bricker?

- [Joe] What are you getting at?

- We're friends, right Joe?

- [Joe] I just said that.

- Well, I need your help.

- [Joe] Okay, uh.

- The generator's almost out,

and I have no more gas.

- [Joe] You'll have to

set a few traps, then.

Not too hard.

You've got a few

days of power left.

No problem.

- [Sophie] Well, I

have another idea.

- [Joe] Oh?

- Well if you're in the

area, and I'm in the area,

then maybe-

- [Joe] Kid, uh, kid,

I don't have any gas.

And even if I did-

- Not gas, you.

- [Joe] I, I-

- My name's Sophie, and

I need you to get me

before the fence goes out.

- [Joe] I-

- North 35 degrees-

- [Joe] What are you doing?

- 42 minutes, 48.5 seconds.

West 91-

- [Joe] Stop, Sophie.

Don't!

- 44 minutes, 4.2 seconds.

There.

Now you have to come.

- [Joe] I-I could

be 1000 miles away

in another country.

- But you're not.

- [Joe] You can't just

give out your location.

Who knows who's listening in?

- You're listening!

Come on, Joe.

Come get me.

- [Joe] Sophie.

What you've got there is

better than I'll ever have.

You've gotta tough

it out on your own.

- Why?

Why won't you come?

- [Joe] I can't.

- You won't!

I thought you said

we were friends!

That we had each other's backs!

- [Joe] We do, but this

isn't one of our stories, kid

- What's that supposed to mean?

Joe?

Joe?

Don't leave me.

Joe?

- [Joe] Look, before all

this mess, I did stunts.

- Joe, I-

- [Joe] Don't talk over me, kid.

Don't talk.

You listen.

We were doing a biopic

on Evel Knievel.

It was a sh*t picture.

But I still had

10 buses to jump.

And I fudged it.

Tore a rotary cuff.

Slipped a disc.

Fractured my skull.

Nothing time couldn't mend,

and pills couldn't numb,

but I learned real quick,

I-I like my oxycodone.

A year or later, I

was hooked on smack.

When I lost a place

to ride out the high,

I'd sh**t up at the legal

injection site downtown.

Next thing I know,

crumpled in a corner,

dizzy as hell, and I

can't feel my legs.

And crammed into that

corner for 48 hours,

the blood in my

legs had poisoned.

(Joe sighs)

To save my life,

they had to, uh,

I'm a cr*pple.

Don't even have a wheelchair.

There's no way I'm

coming for you.

- You can't get me?

- [Joe] Kid.

What you've got

there is special.

You're better off than most.

- I can't do this.

No!

No, no, no!

This is too much!

I'm gonna die here!

They're gonna k*ll me!

They're all gonna-

- Hey, hey.

Don't go there.

You're gonna be fine.

Just take a breath.

- Once the generator's

out, they'll come.

In a couple of months,

I'll be out of food.

What happens then?

I can't hunt!

They're hunting me!

- [Joe] Whoa, whoa.

Slow down.

- They can't be stopped.

They'll follow me

forever and ever.

- [Joe] You're gonna

fudge the jump.

- [Sophie] What?

- [Joe] You gotta take

it one bus at a time.

That's where I screwed up.

Thought of it all

together and lost control.

Same with kicking the habit.

You get too far down the line,

and it's just too

many damn buses.

You gotta take it

a day at a time.

Don't line them up.

That kinda thinking

gets you k*lled.

- What should I do then?

- [Joe] Your dad was

in the Army, right?

- Marines.

- [Joe] I'm just a stuntman,

but I know my way

around expl*sives.

(tense determined music)

(tense determined

music continues)

(generator rumbling)

(birds chirping)

(generator rumbling)

(tense determined

music continues)

(birds chirping)

Down.

- [Sophie] Down.

- [Joe] Hold.

Up.

- Up.

- Down.

- Down.

- Hold.

- Hold.

(Sophie grunts)

- Up.

- Up.

- Down.

- Down.

- [Joe] You're not

doing them anymore.

"But as all men do, even

kings, El Mariachi grew

"long in years.

"His joints began to ache,

"and his vision blurred.

"Even on warm summer

nights, his teeth rattled,

"and his shoulders shook.

"And in his final time, he

whispered to those around him,

"'I am afraid, but undespairing.

"'I am weak, but more

prepared than ever I have been

"'in all my life.'

"Then El Mariachi

proclaimed, 'I see them

"'preparing my way, singing

songs we borrowed from them

"'long ago, and my dogs.

"'I see my dogs.'

"And when King El Mariachi

realized his time to come,

"he swiftly turned to

meet that unknown land

"of wonderful dangers."

- That's it?

- [Joe] That's it.

- That was good.

- [Joe] It was.

- Thanks, Joe.

- [Joe] Sure.

Tonight's the night?

- Yeah.

(chewing food)

(generator rumbling)

(generator cuts out)

(lighter flicking)

(soft tense music)

(soft tense music continues)

(radio static buzzing)

(soft tense music continues)

(soft tense music continues)

- [Joe] What's for dinner?

- Beans.

- [Joe] You're gonna be fine.

- I know.

Before all of this,

I didn't tell you, but

I had a little sister.

Her name was Taylor.

She loved to dance,

but she was horrible.

Always stumbling

around, for hours.

Eventually, she'd fall down,

totally exhausted,

and start wailing.

I'd get so mad at her

when she did that.

One time,

the last time,

I told her to give up.

That she'd never figure it out.

She was too clumsy and too slow.

If I'd known she'd be gone-

- [Joe] You couldn't have known.

- But she gave up

when it mattered most.

I told her to give up.

- [Joe] You can't

think like that.

- Well, it's true.

- [Joe] Even if it is,

you gotta let it go.

- I can't.

- [Joe] Why not?

- I just can't, okay?

- [Joe] It's a choice, you know?

Sophie, you're

choosing to suffer.

- You think I'm choosing to?

You think I'm choosing this?

You think I wanna

feel bad about this?

- [Joe] Yeah.

- Why?

(tense music)

- [Joan] Sophie!

- Joan?

(motor revving)

- [Joe] What's wrong?

- [Rick] Get out here,

and we'll play nice!

- [Joe] Sophie?

- [Sophie] They've got her.

- [Joe] They?

How many?

- [Sophie] At least three.

- [Joe] Bad guys?

- Yeah.

- [Joe] You need a plan.

- [Rick] I'ma count to three!

Three!

(g*nsh*t fires)

- [Joe] What did you do?

- It wasn't me!

(g*nshots firing)

(Sophie gasps)

(Sophie whimpering)

(expl*si*n booms)

(Sophie shrieks)

- [Joe] Shotgun.

Grab it.

(Sophie shrieking)

- [Rick] Don't let her escape!

(dark tense music)

(Shelly screams)

- They're inside.

- [Joe] Hiding place.

Go.

(Sophie panting)

- [Shelly] I'm gonna k*ll her!

(footsteps approaching)

- [Joe] Are you safe?

- Yeah.

I think we got one.

- [Joe] Okay.

If we wait for them

to clean up the mess-

- They've got Joan.

- [Joe] I know.

But we've got to-

- No, they locked her

in the storm cellar.

And I can get in the cellar and-

- [Jeff] Hey, we

know you're up there!

- I think there's only two left.

- [Joe] That's one too many.

We need to wait.

- I'm done hiding, Joe.

- [Joe] We've got

to play it safe.

It's dark.

And if the trap worked,

there's-there's

bound to be blood.

Lots of blood.

You know what that means.

(dark tense music)

- Hey!

Hey!

(Sophie shrieks)

(trap clatters)

sh*t!

- [Joe] What did you do?

You're gonna get

yourself k*lled!

(headset clatters)

- [Shelly] That trick

only works once-

- [Jeff] Whoa, stop!

- She k*lled Rick!

She k*lled him.

You k*lled him!

- Shelly, we've got

bigger fish to fry-

- Shut up!

- It's dark now, and

there's-there's a body.

- What's another blood bag-

- Stop!

(Sophie panting)

- [Joe] Don't touch her!

- No more blood.

(dark tense music)

(dark tense music continues)

(door creaking)

(door clangs)

(soft tense music)

(soft tense music continues)

- You gave away your position.

- [Sophie] Joan, I-

- [Joan] Oh come here.

(Sophie crying)

- [Sophie] Here, sit down.

(Joan sighs)

(Joan exhales)

- They found me at the fence.

(Joan chuckling)

Morons didn't

realize 50 more feet

would have led them here.

- I'm sorry I

didn't go with you.

- Either way.

(Joan gasps)

- [Sophie] Sorry.

- No, you're fine.

You're fine.

Just the soap stings.

- You're alive.

(bleach pours)

Here.

Come on.

- No.

- Joan.

- It's fine, it's fine.

- Give me your arm.

(Joan crying)

(Joan gasping)

- I never said a word.

I kept you safe.

Not even Rick could break me.

Then you went and

blabbed on the radio.

- I'm sorry.

- Save it.

What good is sketching anyway?

Still got my left.

(Joan crying)

- I hung your sketches up.

In Taylor's room.

- I didn't think you'd

ever step foot in there.

- Joe helped.

- [Joan] Who?

- Joe.

- Oh.

The jerk responsible for this?

No.

Not Joe.

You.

What were you thinking?

- I had to reach out

to somebody, Joan.

I can't do this on my own.

We're together now.

That's something, right?

- She always had a bump on

the left side of her head.

Remember? (laughs)

- It's not her fault.

- She was so upset when

her tap shoes came in,

'cause they were two

different colors,

and- (inhales sharply)

Easy!

(Joan sighs)

The UPS guy shows up,

and she comes screaming

at the front door.

Really freaked the guy out.

I mean, she opened the box

with her teeth. (laughs)

The-the left one, with

the orthopedic lift,

it was that nasty beige.

And the right one was-

- Pink.

She hated them.

- Yeah.

She almost gave up on dancing

right there on the front porch.

She never was very

good on her feet.

(Sophie crying)

Soph.

You gotta let her go.

- I know.

- [Joan] She's gone.

- No.

She's still running.

- Oh, Sophie.

(Sophie crying)

(Joan sighs)

Hey.

Come on.

(soft music continues)

You know, I used to think that

you and Mom were the same.

But I was wrong.

- What do you mean?

- Mom wasn't made

for this world.

She was a goner before

it even started.

Not you, though.

(soft music continues)

So, how many did you get?

- Hmm?

- Outside.

How many did you k*ll?

- One.

- Not bad.

- Joe helped.

So what happens next?

They gonna k*ll us?

- They won't touch

a hair on your head.

Do you understand?

I won't let them.

- Neither will I.

We're gonna get out of this.

You and me, together.

- You are so, so brave.

- Joan?

- Yeah?

- I love you.

- I love you, too.

(door clanging)

- [Shelly] Come on.

- [Sophie] Don't.

- [Shelly] Just her!

- Sophie.

Sophie, stay put!

(Shelly laughing)

Stay put.

(door clanging)

(dark tense music)

(g*nshots firing)

(Shelly screams)

- No!

(banging on door)

(g*nshots firing)

Joan!

(creature snarling)

(g*nshots firing)

Joan!

(creature roaring)

(tense foreboding music)

(Sophie shrieks)

(creature roars)

(creature snarling)

(Jeff whimpering)

(creature snarling)

(tense suspenseful music)

(Jeff shrieks)

Close that door!

(Sophie gasps)

(creature snarling)

(blood squelching)

(Sophie screaming)

(creature snarling)

Joan!

(creature roars)

(soft tense music)

Joan!

Joan!

Joan, no, no, no, no, no!

(Joan sputtering)

What am I supposed to do?

- Sophie.

(coughing) I'm scared.

- We can get away, come on!

- I'm scared.

(Sophie crying)

(creatures snarling)

Don't leave.

Don't-don't leave.

- I'm not gonna leave.

(creature snarling)

(Joan choking)

- [Joan] Don't leave me.

- I'm sorry.

(Joan choking)

(creature snarling)

(Sophie shrieking)

(creature growling)

(Sophie yelping)

(creature roars)

(glass shattering)

(grenade explodes)

(Sophie screams)

(creature roaring)

(Sophie screams)

(g*nshots firing)

(creature roaring)

(Sophie screams)

(Sophie yelping)

(g*nshots firing)

(creature roaring)

(Sophie roars)

(dark tense music)

(Sophie screaming)

(soft emotional music)

(high pitched frequency ringing)

(Sophie crying)

(Sophie crying)

I'm sorry, Joan.

You were wrong, I'm not brave.

(Sophie sobbing)

- [Joe] You there?

Sophie.

Hello?

- Joe?

- Hello?

- [Joe] Sophie?

- [Sophie] Joe,

I can't find you.

- [Joe] Hello?

- [Sophie] Joe?

- [Joe] Come on.

- Something happened.

- [Joe] Kid-kid.

You're alive.

- It just keeps

coming. (sobbing)

- [Joe] What's coming?

- Everything.

I can't run anymore.

Joe!

- [Joe] You're-you're

not making any sense.

- You just don't get it, Joe.

There's no reason

for any of this.

We were, we were so close.

And you had that leg,

and you couldn't run.

I couldn't slow down.

I was too afraid.

- [Joe] Kid.

- I should've done something!

They were too fast.

- [Joe] Sophie.

- I couldn't stop.

And they got her.

And Mom saw everything

that happened.

And I just ran.

I couldn't slow down.

And I heard them,

and I heard her.

Why do I keep running?

(Sophie sobbing)

Joe, I'm so tired.

I'm so tired, Joe.

What do I do?

- [Joe] You're strong, Sophie.

You're strong.

You're stronger

than all of them.

And maybe your sister

wasn't quick on her feet.

But you are.

- I loved her.

- [Joe] I know.

- I loved all of them.

I can't do this! (sobbing)

- [Joe] Sophie.

- Joan's dead!

- [Joe] Jesus.

- I just found her again,

and she's already gone forever!

First Taylor, then Mom.

And now, I don't

know how to do this.

- [Joe] Kid.

- I don't know how to do this!

- [Joe] Sophie.

- I don't know how.

- [Joe] What do you

not know how to do?

- I-

- [Joe] I'm here, kid.

- I don't know how

to live without them.

There's no point.

- [Joe] They aren't

around anymore.

But you are.

There's meaning in that.

- I'm scared.

- [Joe] It's scary out

there, and painful.

I should know.

But I'm here, and I'm alive.

And you are, too.

- I don't wanna be.

- [Joe] Sophie, I,

I can't make you believe

life's worth living.

That's up to you.

But I can choose to take

it one day at a time,

to make a life

worth waking up for,

and I-I can promise you this.

Whatever you decide, I'll

be here in the morning,

listening in.

(Sophie sniffles)

- [Sophie] Joe?

- [Joe] Yeah?

- Could you stay

with me tonight?

- [Joe] Sure, kiddo.

I'm here.

(soft emotional music)

(soft emotional music continues)

(soft emotional music continues)

(soft emotional music continues)

(emotional music mounting)

(zipper being zipped)

(birds chirping)

(door slams)

(emotional music continues)

- Hey, Joe?

- [Joe] Yeah, kid?

- I'm coming for you.

- [Joe] Be swift, little prince.

(emotional music continues)

(emotional music continues)

(emotional music continues)

(emotional music continues)

(emotional music continues)

(emotional music continues)

(emotional music continues)

(emotional music continues)

(emotional music continues)

(emotional music continues)

(emotional music continues)

(emotional music continues)

(emotional music continues)

(music fading)

(birds chirping)
