a crush on her in high school,

and she laughed in my face,

and all of her friends looked over at me

and so then I went
and ate lunch in the bathroom.

working, like, three jobs,

and then in the summer, I moved to Paris.

And then while I was in Paris,

I actually met this couple
who taught English

at a school in Jordan.

They were like, "You should totally come."

And so then the next summer,
I went and lived in the Middle East.

No way.

And, yeah, every morning,
I would go learn Arabic.

I'd come back, eat lunch, take a nap,

do my homework, whatever.

And then at night, I would teach English.

That is one of the coolest things
I've ever heard.

Do you like to travel?

I'd really love
seeing different ways of life,

so that is one
of my favorite things ever to do.

It's really important to me
that, like, people feel safe with me.

Yeah, so my parents
never got married, actually.

So they had me when they were 19.

My mom, she was
really surrounded by a lot of drugs,

and she was in kind of a rehab program
when she met my dad,

and they had me on accident. [chuckles]

Met my stepdad when I was two,

married him, and…

I also actually lost my stepdad when I was
in eighth grade to a drug overdose.

My relationship with my mother's tough.

I still talk to her… when I can.

Sometimes it gets
to be a bit much for me, um,

'cause I've just had to be,
like, a parent to her my whole life,

but I really love her.

I have a lot of compassion for her.

And I think there's a lot of, like,

generational curses
that I'm trying to break.

It's just so many things

that I don't wanna take
into, like, my family next.

-[Madison] I get upset about that.

But I have to remember,
like, the cards that she was dealt.

She didn't break
all the generational curses,

but she probably broke some.

So now I would say
I'm close with my brother and my sister.

Like, I just wanna be the person for them
that I never had.

[Alex] Yeah. First of all, I'm very sorry
to hear about all of that.

That's a lot, and I'm sure
it has changed you a lot

and turned you into the person
that you are.

For sure.

-[Alex] I've also had some family issues.

Not anywhere near yours.

-Well, I had a rough time in school.
-[Madison] Okay.

I was, like, relentlessly bullied.

I was beat up in the hallway.

I remember going into lunch,
and I'd try to sit down at a table,

and people would, like,
push my tray off the table.

What the f*ck?

And so I'd go eat alone in the bathroom
or, like, in the practice room.

-And play piano or something.
-[Madison] Yeah.

-[Alex] So that was brutal, for sure.
-That makes my heart hurt for you.

And I have really bad ADHD.

And so I just
failed high school, basically.

And my whole family's about,
like, school and academia,

and so they were
really disappointed in me.

And so I got kicked out of the house,

and I had to just
figure it out on my own, basically.

-Whoa.
-[Alex] And yeah, so it was really hard.

But I think, looking back,
I wouldn't change any of it.

Yeah.

But when I'm in a room now, I can sense,
like, who isn't being included,

and I really want to include them,
and it makes me happy to include them.

Yeah.

But, yeah, no, it was brutal.

-I was also bullied. [laughs]
-[Alex] Uh-huh.

Not as bad. I was…

I mean, I don't know if
it's different for, like, girls and guys.

Before I got braces and stuff,
like, just called the worst names.

And, yeah, just was
not very cool, like, in high school,

which is, you know,
why I kind of gravitated

a lot more towards art and academics.

I love that.
I like a little nerd, you know?

And, you know,
after school, had a glow-up.

And now not only am I cool,
funny, and smart,

So that actually introduced me
to cinematography.

I got a lot of offers
from some D1 schools.

to decline the D1 offers

and stay at home, go to college nearby.

-Because of my parents' divorce.

[Joey] And I had to, like, help my mom
and help my younger sister.

So I chose to stay,
basically, to help them.

and terrible with money.
