[magical music playing]
[Simone] These are
our medal containers from Rio.
They're wooden. Very beautiful.
But here's what they look like.
Oh, this one actually says "Women's Team."
So this is actually
the first gold medal that I ever won.
My first Olympics
was such a breeze, in Rio.
I had no anxiety.
Purely there for, like…
to have fun, make memories,
"Let's see what happens."
Like, look at this one video.
Me, Aly, and Laurie.
[girls squeal]
[Simone] That's when we found out
we just made the Olympic Team.
[Aly] Whoo!
[Simone] There's, like, pictures of us
in the Village.
Just, like, so funny.
And we look so young.
Like, so young.
I set very high expectations
for my very first Olympics.
Walking away with five medals,
four of them gold,
which I just now realized the other day,
how, like, rare that is.
[commentator]
We believed,
coming into Rio,
that Simone could win
five Olympic gold medals.
She stumbled yesterday on beam.
But that one? Just about perfect.
[Simone chuckles]
[Simone] To see how far
the journey has come
from Rio,
that's just wild.
But it is really exciting.
So these are from Tokyo.
They're a little bit different cases.
This is the silver medal.
[Simone] We did the best we could
with the circumstances we were given.
[commentator]
When they realized
Simone Biles was not going to compete
the rest of the way,
it went from shock to determination.
It just wasn't enough
to beat the Russians.
[cheering]
[zipper unzipping]
Okay, well this is
one of my favorite ones.
I think it's stunning.
I feel like we'll either wear this
for podium or qualifications.
[Simone] This time around, I'm feeling
significantly better than Tokyo.
I'm excited, and I'm in a good headspace,
so I don't have those doubts anymore.
This is all starting to feel so real.
Scary real
because I can't believe it's happening.
Good real 'cause I can't believe
it's happening
again.
Making my third Olympic Team,
I think the hard part is now
because the goal is different.
[producer] So what's the goal?
The goal is to win the Olympics.
I would like Team gold
and All-Around gold,
and then, after that, we'll see.
But sh 'cause I'm only telling you guys.

I'm not showing you mine.

This is wild.
It's crazy how we're right here.

The last time, we didn't get
the proper Olympics
that most people
would experience without COVID.
So I'm excited that it's basically
the same crew as last time.
[woman] Okay,
so these are your checklists.
We wanna make sure you have everything
on this list before you leave the building
so you get all your gear.
[Simone] I think I'm okay.
Yeah. Thank you.
[Simone] That Village experience
is something that's a huge part
of the Olympic process.
And being able to be in the village
with all of the athletes
is really, really special.
[laughs]
[Simone] Where's Hezly? I have
the cutest photo of her sleeping.
[chuckles]
Angel baby.
-So cute!
-No way!
[Simone] We were all feeling the pressure
of performing well.
First meal in the village!
[Simone] So now's our time
to bond with each other,
have some fun before the work starts.
[woman] Asher, Paul, and Brody,
you'll be with Ryan,
and Simone, Jordan, and Suni,
you will be with Leslie.
-You guys can go ahead.
-[woman ] Welcome in. How are you?
[woman] We're gonna start
with Opening Ceremony blazer. Navy blue.
-And then for Closing--
-[woman ] Closing's the white one.
-[woman] Okay?
-Yep.
-[woman] Okay, done.

[Simone] You know when you put on
an outfit and it's just really not it?
[mouthing]
I'm trying to see the vision.
Like, I'm trying to see it through.
[woman] It looks cute on all of you.
I promise!

Hair curled. Something…
Mm-mm.
I feel like I'm going to school in London.
[English accent] Let me get on me horse!
Let's try the Closing on.
-This is…
-[Simone] Yeah, thanks.
[woman ] The Prince of Bel Air!
-[Simone] These jackets are fire.
-[woman ] This one's definitely better.
You got a big head.
[Simone] At this point,
I feel like I'm in the best headspace
that I could possibly be
and physically feeling really strong
and ready.
So after Opening Ceremonies,
it's time to get pretty serious.
-[woman] Okay.
-[Simone] Thank you.
[cheering and applause]
[reporter]
It is official. The Summer
Olympic Games are now underway.
Let's turn to these summer events
ahead now.
We are featuring some
of the biggest US stars folks will know,
including gymnast Simone Biles.
[pundit]
This is the story
of the Olympics, at least for US fans,
for sure,
and I wouldn't be surprised at all
if she wins the gold
in the Individual All-Around,
the US gets that Team gold back,
and she's able to win gold
in several of the events.
[pundit ]
All eyes have been on her
as a redemption-type story.
[Simone] "Simone is
the greatest of all time."
"I cannot wait to see
Team USA women gymnasts."
"They got the best in the world."
"Looks like Simone Biles is ready
to flip her way to gold in Paris."
Apparently they only
give out golds at the Olympics.
I don't think anybody knows
of any other color.
[pundit ]
Simone is the first
Women's Olympic All-Around Champ
to compete in three consecutive Olympics
in years.
[Simone] No pictures. No pictures.
It would be ridiculous
to pretend that Simone Biles
is not the face of the Olympic Games.
[Simone] I have to get used
to people coming up to me again
and taking pictures,
so I'm actually kinda nervous.
For some reason, that always scares me.
[man] Simone, say hello to Korea.
[Simone] Hello, Korea.
[Hogben] She's Simone Biles,
and it is bigger than the sport.
[reporter] What are you
most looking forward to
either tonight or as the games begin?
-Simone.
-Simone Biles.
-Simone, we're excited.
-And Simone, who's…
-Yeah.
-Incredible.
It's not easy for her, 'cause she gets
recognized everywhere we go.
Oh, hi, how are you?
-Hi.
-[Simone] Good to see you.
[Simone] It's crazy,
but the expectations are there.
I just think
I have to keep a good headspace,
and I have to just do nothing more,
nothing less once we get out there.
And it always feels better
once we're in that atmosphere
and you know what to expect.
[brakes squeak]
[pundit]
It's going to be a really busy
set of medal rounds coming up
at the Olympic Games.
There were tense moments
during qualification last night,
when it looked like
Simone Biles had injured her calf.
[Simone] It was scary in the moment
because we weren't sure
exactly what it was.
[Simone] It hurts so bad.
Yeah, like, as soon as I took off,
I could feel it. I could feel the tear.
Like, it went "shhht."
I thought I tore my Achilles.
[Simone] Once we got here,
I got evaluated by medical.
Diagnosis is calf strain/tear, you know.
She had one couple of weeks ago.
[Simone] This one really hurts. Most
of the time, I can still walk normally
and do everything. I can just feel it.
I'm just nervous now.
When it's lower leg injuries, you know,
I'm just, like, so cautious, so it's just…
Yeah, she can stretch after, but, like,
mostly whatever she needs for that.
We knew the biggest thing
was keeping her movement,
her range of motion, her strength,
and then getting her pain under control.
But also mentally,
if she's focused on her injury,
she cannot focus on
the big gymnastics she's doing,
and that creates a dangerous position.
[Laurent] Maybe you can do
all the work after for the ankles.
Maybe that will help to… activate this.
[Simone] I thought, moving forward,
there's no way this is gonna get better,
especially since we have Team Final,
All-Around Final,
and then we have
two or three event final days.
So it is a toll on your body,
not just physically, but mentally.
We have a good game plan on, and she
has a compression sleeve to walk around.
And then, you know, we're gonna
take it easy at practice today.
[Simone] Yeah, that's better.
-[Cécile] You want it higher?
-[Simone] That's high enough.
And there's another
hours before you compete.
-So that should be even better.
-[Simone] Yeah.
We have other things, too,
if she really needs it.
If she tells you and doesn't tell me,
let me know.
-But…
-[Cécile] She'll tell you.
-[Cheryl] I think so.
-[Cécile] Now she'll tell you.
Four years ago, maybe not,
but now she'll tell you.
Good.
[Laurent] This is just a little hiccup
that hopefully won't affect her,
and I know when you have a pain,
you think about this first
and not about your performances.
So hopefully the pain can be managed,
and she's hopefully
not worried that it's gonna get worse.
And then she can actually try
to do her best.
[Simone] I feel like the more time
we have, the better it'll feel,
so just trying to put up the best scores
for Teams, focusing on that competition,
then we'll move on to the All-Around
and see how we feel,
see what needs to be done, um,
to remain healthy, and then that's it.
[classy music playing]
-[man] I'll take you to the room.
-[Jonathan] Yes, sir.
Please, Mr. Owens.
-Thank you.
-You're welcome to your room.
[Jonathan sighs]
Damn.
When in France, you do as the French do.
I'm eating French fries in France.
[chuckles]
The Bears gave me a few days off
the training camp so that I could be here
and support my wife and watch her
as she goes through the Finals
and her third Olympic Games.
I'll be excited. I'll be cheering her on.
Yep.
Someone made this shirt for us.
How does it look? Cool?
She's a freaking warrior, though, man.
Like, fighting through injuries.
All the outside effects and, you know,
like I said, not doing it for yourself,
that's when you
start to feel more pressure,
you know, and you're not as free mentally.
[line ringing]
-How are you? [laughs] You sayin'--
-[Simone]
I'm good. How are you?
This how you get the hair right. Mm-hmm.
-Do you wanna see my room?
-[Simone]

I'm, uh… I'm right by, like, the river.
I don't know.
-A lot of shopping--
-[Simone]
I saw your location.
Oh, you on me! Ah!
-Okay, how far am I from you?
-[Simone]
