01x02 - From Doubters to Believers

But, I grew up in a time and, erm,

it was typical to watch English football.

But like everybody who's in football,

I knew about Kenny Dalglish.

[crowd goes wild]

I always thought,

is the ball different in England,

because they score from such a distance?

I had so many… so many

Liverpool moments without… having any…

erm, kind of idea…

that this could be my story.

your earliest memories of Liverpool

- and winning…

- No, no, no, that's not my story,

that's the story of a friend…

My first and foremost love

was Liverpool Football Club.

When I was about ten years old,

I still can remember

er, Kevin Keegan being involved

in a fist fight.

- [crowd going wild]

- [commentator] And that looked

very much like

a right hook by Johnny Giles.

[Campino] And, er…

that was when

I fell in love with Liverpool.

[commentator] And Kevin Keegan having

words with the referee and he's off here.

And he's absolutely livid about it.

And my feeling

is that Johnny Giles should have gone

in the first place,

and there might then not have been

a second case.

When the news was on,

Jürgen Klopp is going to be

the new manager…

I sent him a message, you know?

Like, like… 'Welcome, Jürgen, yeah, do me…

uh, to Liverpool, my favourite club.

Do me a favour, don't mess it up.'

Then I said, ah, maybe a bit impolite,

he never heard of you.

So, I changed the last words and just said

'Welcome, Jürgen,' you know,

'it's my favourite club

since I'm a young boy,

I wish you all the best'.

Liverpool are on the hunt

for a new manager tonight,

after ending Brendan Rodgers

three-year spell in charge.

The club says the search

for a new manager is underway,

but already tonight

the German, Jürgen Klopp,

is the odds-on favourite to take over.

There's a big bear

wearing a giant Dortmund top

in the front garden of the house

opposite Jürgen Klopp's German home

and on a big day for Klopp

and for Liverpool

there were a few bear hugs as well.

Here, for example,

is Klopp's agent, Marc Kosicke,

celebrating the deal being done

with an assistant.

Moments earlier, I managed

a quick word with Klopp himself

who confirmed his future at Anfield.

[Klopp] From tomorrow on, I'm 24/7,

erm, Liverpool man,

but now we have to do some private things

and that's no time for media, OK?

With friends and family

he left for Liverpool.

is one of the most complicated jobs

in world football.

You need to be a politician,

a social worker,

a psychologist,

historian.

with all these crazy things

that people track the plane

and stuff like that. You don't… have this…

idea of yourself

This is where the staff get changed.

For you, and your staff,

depends on a match day.

Obviously, this will be cleared before…

I was really disappointed

because I realised,

'Oh, my god, yeah, I forgot

that the dressing rooms are really bad'.

It's time to restart, that's for sure.

You have to change from doubter

to believer. It's a very important thing.

I don't want to say we have to wait

the next 20 years and I'm sit here again.

I know, when I'm sit here in four years,

I think, we won one title in this time.

I… I'm pretty sure.

The famous atmosphere

wasn't there for a long, long time.

at his first press conference declares

that he's gonna bring a title

I'm not sure everyone believed him.

Fantastic to see the new manager here.

Jürgen did when he came to the club

was actually go and visit the academy.

And straight away, you know this is a guy

who's gonna be invested

in bringin' young players through.

There's a huge passion

for the game within the city,

and it's vitally important Liverpool have

local players in their team.

[Pep Lijnders] When I came to Liverpool

my dream was to be able

to bring young players to the first team.

And one of them was Trent.

I fell in love with the Scouser.

There's nobody wants

to be more decisive in games than him.

[reporter] So the first question,

Trent, is gonna be what--

what kind of player are you?

If you have to describe it, yeah?

[Pep] And then Jürgen came in,

and I tried to immediately sell him.

[Klopp] And I think on day one,

Pep told me about Trent.

It was pretty much… on… on the first day.

'That one… but if you see him… wow'.

So, that's how that started.

[reporter] Okay,

so this is the gettin' to know you bit.

Trent, describe what kind of player

you are for people that don't know you.

Erm…

I'd say I was athletic,

erm… passionate,

and…

a winner.

off the field, away from football.

quite shy,

not the loudest in the room.

where do you see yourself?

Hopefully playin' for the first team.

The unknown was exciting to me, you know?

Am I gonna be able to survive?

The dream was always to play football.

A few weeks after the Crystal Palace game,

the team play West Brom at home.

And yet again,

they find themselves 2-1 down

with the game being almost over.

but when we are together

we can conquer the whole world,

and that's what we want to do,

there's so much riding on it.

but I didn't expect that.

Me tryna get myself prepared. I only lived

about ten, fifteen minutes away,

but I couldn't hold it in. I had to call

me mum, me brothers, and that…

me dad and say 'Yeah, I'm playing.'

We as coaches have no idea how to deal

with the amount of injuries we have.

You don't go outside and say, 'By the way,

You always have to pretend

Necessity is the mother of invention.

I try to find solutions.

We'd never want anybody to get injured

to provide a chance for someone

within the academy,

but it is a truism that when availability

is low then opportunity is high.

We're quite sure about the part

the academy has to play within the club

and that's to support…

the first team in any way it can.

The easiest way to support the first team

is to provide them with players

who are capable of not only…

playing in the first team,

but also winning with the first team.

But you never really know

whether a player's ready

until they actually… until they're there.

I struggled a little bit with that.

I think, there's only me

and one other lad from the academy

under sevens who have stayed.

I remember, I think

he would've been about two or three

and I was doin' half-volleys

and he kept gettin' 'em back in me hands,

and I was just, like, was that a fluke or…

we might have a little footballer here.

Then within the academy

a lot of people recognised pretty quickly

that he might have something

a little bit different.

Erm, and he's worked hard.

He's always had that mentality,

even from such a young age, hasn't he?

- Yeah.

- That he wanted to be different

and wanted to stand out.

By the end of Jürgen's second season,

and that was absolutely massive.

In 2016, he had signed Sadio Mané

and he had a huge run of Liverpool success

in the future and this was the first time

we ever seen him combine

with Bobby Firmino.

And in 2017, he added

another key player to that forward line.

and I saw a lot of videos of Mo

and we say like this, he was not

the finishing monster we see now.

It's crazy to think now,

a hell of a deal there.

I still remember feeling

we were in that game.

When Sadio scored,

I remember thinking 'we're in this game'.

And then out of nowhere,

nowhere…

Wonderful goal.

Ooh, he's gone for it.

And it's gone

straight through the goalkeeper's hands.

Another nightmare moment

for Loris Karius.

[Klopp] After we lose a game,

you wouldn't think that this mood

can be created by… a football game.

It is physical pain.

We create a world…

where it means that much.

[Lallana] In that dark moment

just to see how proud

he was of the group,

he knew that there was, er…

brighter times ahead… he knew

that was just the start, I suppose.

We were building something.

[Campino] It was right after the game,

we went to the airport

and, er, flew back to Liverpool.

It was the aeroplane

with friends and family

and the team, they left a little earlier

so when we landed in Liverpool

the door opened and there was Jürgen

saying goodbye to all of us who came

down the stairs from the aeroplane.

That was… amazing and it was more like…

he was there for us,

than we were for him, you know?

He… he tried to help us

over our disappointment.

It was a… classic Jürgen moment.

He is a caretaker through and through.

We drove home, it must have been four

or five in the morning or so,

and nobody of us could go to sleep,

so I went down to the kitchen to have…

to get myself another beer. I was

so winded up, I couldn't sleep anyways.

So there sat Jürgen

having a beer,

and said, 'I can't sleep, also,'

and then one after each other

we all gathered in the kitchen again

and sat there

and drunk our sorrows away and… and… er…

and we started having a careful laugh,

and then it got louder, and…

and then, kind of, the…

the atmosphere

completely changed,

and we were going crazy.

We had a kind of…

'If you think we're finished,

we're gonna prove

it's the other way round.

This is just the beginning'.

And within a few hours

after that defeat, that was amazing.

And we recorded this ridiculous song.

We saw the European Cup ♪

Madrid had all the f*cking luck ♪

We swear we'll keep on being cool ♪

We'll bring it back to Liverpool ♪

If you expect the perfect life,

you will get upset and… and disappointed

all the time.

that some things will not go your way

and you can still take something from it,

then you probably have

a good chance to get through it…

through this crazy jungle somehow and…

and if it's true, and it probably is true,

then I learned a lot.
