EXCITED CHATTER

Hello.

Big crowd for theoretical science.

Welcome.

I am Dr Alan Turing.

Good to have so many of you here,

I think.

I can never quite figure

if something is better

if it's bigger.

No sniggering during the lecture, please.

I've always thought, for example,

that if the Manchester Baby -

that is to say the small-scale

experimental machine -

which is to say the first electronic

stored-program computer -

I'm sorry, that's to say

the very first machine

which has had memory -

which my team and I

developed recently -

was 100 times bigger,

then of course it could do more.

But would it be better?

I mean, this is the biggest

chalkboard I've ever seen -

so let's say big is best today.

I say, "Good evening, students."

You say, "Good evening, Dr Turing."

Good evening, students.

AUDIENCE: Good evening, Dr Turing.

Well, it's a good job we're

all numbers people, isn't it?

Let us begin.

In the future, some might say

I helped bring

the Allies to victory.

But on this day in 1949,

they say,

"Yes, he may be a genius

codebreaking mathematician,

"but sadly he cannot be trusted

with much."

They say this because I have had

no marriage, as such,

and of course, winning a w*r

couldn't be done

without a wife and a family

to win for.

But still, I'm here in Manchester,

at the university.

Deputy Director of

the Computing Laboratory.

I feel incredibly lucky -

not for meteorological reasons,

I'm sure we can all agree -

but because Manchester is quite

simply the home of the machine.

The very first time

a hand skill was mechanised,

it was in Manchester in 1767

with the invention

of Arkwright's water frame.

The city quickly became

the global leader

of industrial machinery,

mass manufacturing.

The Jacquard loom,

with its punch card innovation,

allowing complicated textile

to be mass woven,

and, eventually, miraculously,

the first computers to be inspired

by that very same

punch card system.

The world has changed,

industrialised for evermore,

and you're now here to ask what will

the core of our future be.

Should we be worried about machines

being able to think?

The answer may seem to be

another question.

"Well, that depends

on what it is thinking,

"doesn't it, Dr Turing?"

I think if computers could think

they may one day think

better thoughts than us.

I doubt very much they'd care about

who we choose to love,

as a small example.

Now, if they could think,

would this make them real?

The "I think, therefore I am"

scenario?

Well, what makes

us humans real anyhow?

Our imaginary death is guaranteed

to one day become a real one,

then our real death leaves behind

an imaginary life.

So neither life nor death

can be the defining factor.

"We tell stories," people shout.

"That's what being human

rather than machine is about."

But are we born with

storytelling capability?

Don't we learn it

from everything around us?

I'll be so bold as to say,

"Are we not programmed

with the pieces

"as we grow, much like the looms

and the Manchester Baby?"

"No, no, Alan, we feel," you might

wish to argue with me.

"Pain and love

are what makes us real."

Pain and love are also

what can make it

too hard to exist.

It's a curious calculation

of cancellation.

Can the only things

that make you real

also be the things that crush you

into particles unseen?

If one day a machine can truly see,

perhaps that is what we will be

to them -

disappearing, lacking,

itself the only tangible thing.

Enough.

Stop!

I've said too much.

You came here for codes

and patterns and numbers,

mathematics light years ahead

of all of us.

The future encased in its equations.

Are you listening?

Zero, zero, zero, zero, zero, one,

zero, zero, one.

Really, truly listening?

PHONE RINGS

You can start at any point,

at three, four, five, six,

seven, eight.

One, two... You must pay attention!

All from the beginning.

One, two, three, four, five.

It's your responsibility

to know the steps.

PHONE RINGS

Is someone looking for me?

I can't answer,

I'm giving a lecture.

You can reverse it -

two, one, eight, seven, six,

five, four,

three, two, one.

Otherwise, how will you know

what happens next?

Learning it all

is just the basic duty.

It's just the incidents.

You have to really try

to understand.

More, you have to really try

to see.

Two, three, four.

Or not. Stop.

It's up to you.

PHONE RINGS

They're coming for me

and I'm not sure

what they're going to do.

PHONE RINGS

MORPHEUS: Hello, Neo.

I've been looking for you, Neo.

Let us begin.

I-I'm here in Manchester.

I'm here... I'm feeling...

Feeling very lucky.

A-And...

See our interests...

Oh, my.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

We can solve our problems...

And that makes them beautiful.

When I think of the future,

I think of the man and the machine.

Zero, zero, zero, zero, zero, one,

zero, zero, one.

seven, eight.

One, two...

AGENT SMITH: Its genius?

Billions of people

living out their lives.

Did you know

that the first Matrix

was designed to be

a perfect human world,

where none suffered,

where everyone would be happy?

It was a disaster.

No-one would accept the program.

Entire crops were lost.

Some believed that we lacked

the programming language

to describe your perfect world.

I believe that, as a species,

human beings define their reality

through misery and suffering.

So the perfect world was a dream

that your primitive cerebrum

kept trying to wake up from.

Redesigned...

I say "your civilisation",

because as soon as we started

thinking for you,

it became our civilisation,

which is, of course,

what this is all about.

Evolution, Morpheus.

Evolution.

Like the dinosaur.

Look out that window.

You had your time.

The future is our world.

I'd like to share a revelation

that I've had.

It came to me when I tried

to classify your species.

You're not actually mammals.

Every mammal on this planet

instinctively develops

a natural equilibrium

with the surrounding environment.

But you humans do not.

You move to an area and...

...m-m-m-multiply...

...multiply until every natural

resource is consumed.

The only way you can survive...

There is another organism

on this planet

that follows the same pattern.

Human beings are a disease,

a cancer of this planet.

You are a p-plague...

...and we are the cure.

Can you hear me, Morpheus?

I'm going to be honest.

I hate this zoo,

this prison,

this reality.

I can't stand it any longer.

It's the smell.

Taste your stink.

And every time I do,

I fear that I have somehow

been infected by it.

It's repulsive, isn't it?

I must get out of here.

I must get free.

And in this mind is the key,

my key.

Once Zion is destroyed,

there is no need for me to be here.

Do you understand?

I need the codes.

I have to get inside Zion.

And you have to tell me how.
