And Jennifer stuck this jersey in my bag
with a little surprise saying,

to wear this for luck."

And I switched my jerseys out.
And there's a little video clip

before you run out for introductions,
standing next to a couple other guys,

and you can see
the difference in the sleeves easily.

[Ken] When I started Goldin,

one of the advantages I thought
I could have over everybody

is all of my relationships
with athletes over the years.

So getting in touch with these athletes
when they're ready to sell,

and working my old friendship
and relationship, is very important.

It was important when I started Goldin,
and it's gonna be more now as we grow.

To me, this is the most
significant item in the collection.

I'm very excited
to see what this one goes for.

So what that actually means is,
these are very rare cards.

He has 50.

[Ken] In the 1940s,
Timely Comics originated

many superhero characters
during its golden age.

Most importantly, Captain America,

whose biggest foe was Hitler
from n*zi Germany.

In the early 1960s,
writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby,

were instrumental
in reviving the superhero genre

and ushering in the silver age of comics.

With a new era comes a new name,

and Timely Comics transitioned
into the now-known moniker Marvel Comics.

Under Marvel, the creative duo introduced
lauded characters such as Spider-Man,

the Incredible Hulk,
Iron Man, and the X-Men.

Today, the Marvel Cinematic Universe
is a household name,

and has grown into the most
lucrative franchise in film history,

making this completed set
of the 2017 Fleer Ultra

Marvel Green Precious Metal Gem cards
a gold mine of their own.

How the heck did you get all 50 of them?

Time and patience.
Uh, and a lot... a lot of negotiation.

That one Spider-Man
was the hardest one to get.

Yeah, I mean, this card here, we've sold
similar Spider-Man's for 100 grand-plus.

And there's only ten of them.
How'd you get this one?

It took me a purple Spider-Man,
a purple Deadpool, purple Spider-Man 2099.

Completing the set.
That was the most important thing to me.

I think it's the only green Marvel set
on the registry any of the years.

It won the PSA Set of the Year
for non-sports this year.

-So that was pretty cool.
-There's a lot of value.

I think that's what
we really need to get into.

So you said no to a million dollars
for this set already?

Hindsight being 2020,

You know, where the market was,
you know, to where it is now.

I don't think we're out of the ballpark,
and I'm certainly gonna try.

You know, we just... We gotta be realistic.

Number seven Pirates.
Any idea what this is?

-That's an early Bonds jersey.
-[Ken] Yes, it is. So this is my jersey.

Number seven.

Barry Bonds. It is from 1986.

He was called up in May,
did poorly, and then, after a few games,

switched to number 24,
his godfather Willie Mays.

I actually picked up
Barry's number seven jersey

from his 1986 rookie season in a trade.

I've had the jersey ever since.

People remember Barry Bonds' 24
with the Pirates.

And, of course, 25 with the Giants,
because Mays was retired.

Yeah.

[Ken] I met Barry in 1987

and originally signed him
to an autograph agreement.

He used to come to my office,
sign autographs.

And then, over the years,
we got very close.

Hung out together.
Took vacations together.

He is probably, over the years,
my single best friend in this business.

We are friends first
and business associates second.

And I love Barry.

I was doing an interview
on my Instagram with Barry.

You knew how great you were,

and you knew
how great you were going to be,

so you started saving things
that were important.

Yeah, exactly.

[Ken] Barry Bonds has the reputation

of not being the easiest guy
to get close to,

but I followed him
around the country on numerous seasons,

including 2001, when he was chasing
the all-time home run record.

To this day, I've never approached him
about consigning his collection.

That's about to change.

Barry has been a real pain
with selling any of his great stuff,

but I think it's time.

I think it's time that he gives
some of that collection to Goldin.

It's good for him to start planning,

to start selling some of his bigger items
while the market is eager for it.

-Yeah.
-[Ken] So I think that'd be great.

Barry obviously made a ton of money,

but these players
need a good retirement plan.

-And the thing is, those guys lived it.

Let somebody else appreciate it.
People live through them, idolize them.

Barry, since he retired,
has been completely inaccessible.

He doesn't do card shows.
He doesn't do private signings.

So there's a lot of pent-up demand,

which makes all of his items
significantly more valuable.

After getting the Joe Montana collection,
I'm on a roll.

I'm gonna go after Barry.

You know, he's got
at least four Gold Gloves, but seven MVPs.

If I can come home with one of them
and he's happy with the jersey, wonderful.

You have to have the Spider-Man,
the Holy Grail of the set, for sure.

to hit Steve with full sets,

and sometimes he'll tell me straight up,
"Dave, I can piecemeal it together."

But this is an entirely PSA-graded set
and they're numbered to ten.

If Steve wants to spend six years
trying to put this together,

he's able to do that.

doing five shows a weekend,

so the convenience factor,
it's right in front of him.

And when you look at the set in person,
it sparkles, it shines, it is amazing.

It's not 2021, that's for sure.

the analytics, you know, their...
