02x06 - The T-P Agent's Crime

Post by bunniefuu »

I don't know what to think.

Neither do I.

He called us and said to come right away.

He said he had something very rare
to show us.

We were totally excited
when we got there, but...

It's an alpine black swallowtail.

It flew into our yard.

I thought I'd show it to you
before I release it.

Well? Isn't it incredible?

This butterfly?

Is it that incredible?

I see it flying around everywhere.

You guys don't get it, do you?

Here.

It's rarely seen in this area.
The one you see often is...

this one,
the Japanese peacock swallowtail!

Oh yeah, it sure is.

Right! And this one here is...

Alpine. Black.

Swallowtail!

Unlike the Japanese peacock swallowtails,
they have white lines on their hindwings.

They're a completely different species!

Right.

There. Off you go.

I hope we'll get to see more of them
like we used to.

That was oddly exhausting.

Gayler?

How regrettable.

This is truly heartbreaking.

What?

I can't believe

one of our Time Patrol Rescue Unit members
is a criminal.

A criminal?!

I didn't do anything!

I was napping all this time!

No one said it's you.

In 1667,

a sailor was m*rder*d
at a port in England.

And the k*ller was a Time Patrol agent.

What?!
A Time Patrol agent committed m*rder?

Why would you let such a person
join Time Patrol?

There were no issues with him

neither before nor after
he became a Time Patrol agent.

Actually, this man had more courage
and sense of justice than most

and a kind soul.

Here's my order!

Yes, sir!

Head for the time and location
of the m*rder

and prevent the crime!

Understood!

Come on out!

We'll work with
the Criminal Investigation Unit this time.

You two are responsible
for preventing the sailor's m*rder.

Yes, sir!

THE T・P AGENT'S CRIME

I can't believe
a Rescue Unit agent k*lled someone.

Our job is to save people, you know.

You might as well arrest him.

That's the Criminal Unit's job.

It's gonna be hard.

We'll have to fight
a Time Patrol agent equipped like us

and protect the sailor from him.

This is Southampton.

It's 93 kilometers from London.

It's a historic port city.

Where's the criminal?

I don't know.

But I'm sure he's hiding
somewhere in this city.

His name is John Defoe, 23 years old.

He's British and has been
a Time Patrol agent for five years.

The victim is Zabrock, 38 years old.

He's a harpooner on a whaler.

Britain in this time period
did not engage in whaling though.

He gained experience in the Netherlands

and came back to this city
for incentives given by the poachers.

Wherever they are now,

they'll meet tonight,

at 10:30, in an alley,

and Time Patrol agent Defoe
will m*rder Zabrock.

I'm a harpooner

Second to no other

See you later.

Good night.

You've had too much, Zabrock.

Another one!

You've been drinking since noon.

So? Do you have a problem with that?

It's getting late.

How about you go home soon?

Don't tell me what to do!

Drunks are such a pain.

So this is Zabrock.

I wonder when Defoe will show up.

Here you go.

I've got plenty of money, you know.

Because the captain paid me in gold.

Do you know why he did that?

I do.

It was the reward for k*lling Leviathan.

That's right!

I'm surprised you knew it.

Well, then do you know
what that Leviathan is?

Oh yeah, I know it very well.

It's an enormous right whale, correct?

Exactly!

You keep talking about it
since you came back.

Let me tell you one more time.

I've heard it enough.

Just take my advice.

You should go home now.

No! I won't leave
until you listen to my story!

That story sounds interesting.

Please tell me about it in more detail.

What? You're interested?

Come here. Sit down!
You're more than welcome.

Regular right whales
are about 45 feet at most.

But this Leviathan
was far larger than that.

I swear to God, it was well over 80 feet.

For many years, he has been hunted

by every whaling ship in the world.

But that whale was smart.

It always managed to slip away skillfully.

Maybe it was even smarter than humans.

But that monster

was finally ended by me right here!

Yeah, whatever.

This isn't the safest place to relax.

But his story is way too long.

Bon!

On the stem of the boat
rocking left and right on a rough sea,

I rose to my feet like a divine guardian!

And I glared at Leviathan,
that crazy b*stard!

Come on, Bon. What are you doing?

Then I lifted my harpoon,
carefully took aim, and...

I hurled it!

What a tremendous feat.

Whoop!

How about another?

I won't say no to that.

By the way, there's something
that caught my attention.

That's one gorgeous headband
you're wearing.

It is, right?

I'm glad you noticed!

It's from Leviathan!

My trophy for k*lling that monster.

I see.

This flexibility.

This smooth texture.

-Do you get it?
-I get it!

So this is what turned out to be
the ruin of them all?!

What? Who's "them"?

What was that?

Bon, are you okay?

Ouch.

What? Yikes.

Meow.

Meow.

I guess it was just a cat.

Hey, I think I'll call it a night.

All right.

Take care.

Please wait.

What?

I'm sorry for getting upset back there.

Another drink on me to apologize?

What? No, I'm getting sleepy.

That man in the coat is suspicious.

Perhaps it's Defoe.

I'm a harpooner...

Zabrock, how about
we avoid going this way?

But why?
My house is just ahead of this road.

Please, Zabrock.

Let's change the route.

I will not!

I'm begging you.

I'm a harpooner
Second to no other

Zabrock,

if you keep going down this road,

you will fall into a pit.

And half an hour later,
you will be rescued by a man.

That encounter is very problematic.

Their dreadful and tragic fate

is to begin from that encounter.

Enough!

What do you keep babbling about...

Darn it.

How could he be so heavy?

The force of history is so strong.

It doesn't seem
to give me an easy way out.

If I take my time,

that encounter is sure to happen.

I'm doing this to save thousands,
or even millions of their lives.

Forgive me!

It's over, Agent Defoe.

Leave your weapon and surrender.

Time Patrol agents.

He vanished?

He must have used his Time Boat.

Oh no! Someone's coming.

Second to no other...
I'm a harpooner, you hear me?

Hey, you.

Why are you sleeping in here?

You'll catch cold.

Defoe was saying something
about an encounter.

I wonder what he meant.

Let's get back and report to Gayler first.

Come now, take my hand.

Thank you.

NAMIHIRA

You did a good job.

Your mission is complete.

The Investigation Unit
will take over from here.

But we stopped Agent Defoe
from committing a crime.

Well, m*rder wasn't his only crime.

He intended to change a part of history
by doing so.

But that's...

Right. It's a grave breach
of the Time Navigation Law.

He probably won't give up
until he reaches his goal.

But...

What exactly was it
that Defoe wanted to change in history?

It's unclear at this moment.

That's why we need to capture him
and inquire about it.

That's all. Terminating connection.

Please wait!

Please let us capture Agent Defoe
by ourselves.

Agent Bon.

If our colleague is committing a crime,

it's our duty to stop him!

Please!

Ream told me many times how important
it was to obey the Time Navigation Law.

That's why I want to prevent
a Time Patrol agent from breaking the law.

Please let us do it!

I see.

Very well.

What's this?

The pulses from Defoe's Time Boat
remain in space-time.

This device can track them.

I'm counting on you.

As his colleagues, stop Defoe in time!

Yes, sir!

Hey, guys! Tracking Defoe again?

We said we'd stop Defoe,

but how are we going to do that?

If possible, I want to talk him out of it.

If that's not an option...

I'm pretty good at sh**ting.

I've even had a duel
at the O.K. Corral once.

More like near the O.K. Corral.

He's hurrying farther back in time.

We passed that night in Southampton.

He wants to settle it
before that encounter.

Looks like this is where
Defoe left space-time.

Let's go.

What?

In the middle of the ocean?

What's he trying to do out here?

Look!

A ship!

It's disguised as a regular sailing ship,
but it's an ill*gal whaler.

Found them!

The whales!

The V-shaped blow is a right whale.

And that gigantic size...

It's Leviathan!

All right, boys, go and k*ll it!

Whoever strikes it first
will be rewarded in gold!

Whaling back then used smaller boats
to chase whales and harpoons to k*ll them.

Row as hard as you can!

I bet Zabrock will k*ll it
and receive the reward.

It changed direction!

I guess it noticed us.

It's trying to escape!

Once it dives,
it won't come back up for another hour.

What do we do?

All right. Head back at full speed!

Shouldn't we go forward?

Based on the tail fin movement...

It's Leviathan, you know.

If you think it's on the right, go left.
If forward, then backward.

That's how it plays us.

I bet an hour later, it'll show up
on the rear side of the main ship.

It's not coming.

No, there's no way it's not coming.

Here it comes.

It's gigantic!

Zabrock!

A right whale attacking a human?

And it looks like
it's targeting Zabrock alone.

It must be a bio controller.

So, Defoe is controlling it
from somewhere.

Where is he?

He's neither on the sea nor in the air.

Buyo!

Over there!

It's you again.

Stop that nonsense!

Stop getting in my way!

Don't do this, Defoe!

But this...

this is the only way left!

I don't have a choice. Hang on tight.

Way to go, expert gunslinger.

It was my first time underwater,
so I was nervous.

This is Bon.

We captured Agent Defoe.

Well done, Agent Bon.

Stand by on Jan Mayen Island

Yes, sir.

Look!

Leviathan is swimming away.

I'm so glad.

Everybody seems okay.

Could you please tell us

what you were trying to do?

In Southampton,

that man who found Zabrock,

he was a tailor.

A high-end dressmaker, to be precise.

He was a man with lots of ideas

and was popular among upper-class women.

He met Zabrock by chance
and took notice of his headband.

Baleen was a perfect material for corsets
worn by women to shape their bodies.

The tailor realized

that baleen had a greater worth
that no one had discovered before.

His new and improved corset
was called the baleen corset

and became a huge success.

Baleen instantly attracted
enormous attention.

Whalers began targeting right whales
for their abundant whale oil and baleen.

Then more time passed,

and an even newer model,
the hoop petticoat, was invented.

In 1718,

this was brought to France
and became the pannier.

The pannier was introduced
at the court of Philippe of Orléans

and became a hit.

Later, the baleen corsets and panniers
exploded in popularity,

and they became indispensable
for the ladies of Europe.

Baleen was always scarce,
no matter how many whales were k*lled.

In the end, some countries
even founded their own whaling companies.

The hunting continued on and on
until this year.

I mean "this year"
in the time period I come from.

In 1912, whalers couldn't even catch
a single right whale.

Right whales

became extinct!

What?

So Defoe, you're a Time Patrol agent
from the beginning of the 20th century.

Whales and humans,

we're both creations of God.

Causing a species to go extinct
just for fashion

is an unforgivable, cardinal sin.

But I don't think k*lling Zabrock
will save the whales either.

That's right.

It was only a matter of time
before someone thought of corsets

made from baleen.

Perhaps you're right.

Until we stop arrogantly believing
everything in nature exists for our sake,

many more animal and plant species
are likely going to die out.

How foolish of you.

My apologies.

What's going to happen to Agent Defoe?

I'm not sure.
It's up to the Court of Inquiry.

But he broke the Time Navigation Law
by abusing his position.

It's a serious crime.

Please wait.

Just one moment.

Right whales still haven't gone extinct
in the 21st century.

What?

In fact, they're slowly repopulating
in our time.

People finally became aware
in the late 20th century.

There are many
nature conservation movements,

and slowly but surely,

the world is shifting
toward a better future.

Thank you.

That's a relief to hear.

Well, I'd say you both did
quite well on this one.

Let's hope Defoe's punishment
will be lighter.

I'm sure the Court of Inquiry
will understand his sentiment.

This butterfly.

It has the white arching lines.

An alpine black swallowtail!
