02x01 - Worthy New Opponents

Post by bunniefuu »

[thwack]

[whoosh]

[suspenseful music playing]

[boy 1] The fact is,
even the top-ranked golfers

in the Japanese school are no match
for the American players, little dude.

There's really no reason for us
to even play a match against you.

You don't have a chance.

- [tense music plays]
- [Gawain grumbles]

Then how else are we supposed to compete?

We could do closest to the pin
or a putting challenge, I guess.

Pick any club you like.

[Gawain] Hmm.

Well, you're gonna be sorry you said that,
because I pick the driver.

[boy 1] Hmm?

You picked a driver?

You kiddin'? You're a little shrimp.
We're gonna mop the floor with you.

Well, you've got guts.
I'll give you that, little man.

So, the four of us
will each hit a ball as far as we can.

As long as you do better
than fourth place, you win.

Fine.

[music fades out]

[descending squeak]

RISING IMPACT

EPISODE 13: WORTHY NEW OPPONENTS

[Yumiko] Hey! Little squirt?

Gawain?

Oh. Yumiko.

- Did you find Gawain?
- No.

Ugh. I've looked everywhere,
but it's like he vanished into thin air.

Ms. Aria said he was talking about

going to hang out
with those American golfers.

I hope he's not getting himself
into any trouble.

Yeah.

Especially considering
we just got to the UK.

[chuckles] He wouldn't do that.

- [rousing music plays]
- I bet he won't even hit it ten yards.

Ha. I bet he whiffs it
and misses the whole ball.

I mean, what's a Japanese school squirt
even doing in the Camelot Cup?

[Gawain] These guys are not very nice,
but I'll show 'em!

Fairway's getting pretty narrow,

but I can hit for accuracy
and still give it a ride.

[music swells]

- [whoosh]
- [resonant clang]

Huh?

[both gasp]

Yes.

Did you see what I just saw?
That shot was huge!

Yeah, you got that right.

The little shrimp airmailed
that freaking ball 300 yards.

And his head speed was super-fast!

So now whatta we do?

We gotta find some way outta this contest.

Aw, man, we are stuck.

Who'd have thought the Japanese school
had a little weirdo for a ringer?

- All right then, you're up. Huh?
- [music crescendoes]

[music fades out]

I'll go next.

Wait. What are you doing with that?

That's a 3-iron!
Why... why aren't you using the driver?

Because, like I said,

I'm going to show you
there's no reason to play against us.

Why are you so mean?

And if you're so much better,
then why are you even challenging me?

To show you that I don't need a driver,
not against someone like you.

That shot of yours was okay,
but it wasn't all that great.

[grumbles]

Does he really mean
all this stuff he says?

Now a 3-iron?

Liebel and I can only hit it

- [tense music plays]
- [boy 1] Hmm...

Strange... how much
he reminds me of that other guy.

[chuckles]

That's impossible though.

- [grunts]
- [ethereal thrum]

[gasps]

[crackling]

[murmurs nervously]

Whoo! That's an awesome shot, man!

That's the American team's
number one hitter right there, bro!

Oh, that was some serious power.

I got goosebumps just watching.

But what... what was that flash of light
when he hit the ball?

- It looked like lightning or something.
- Hmm? Lightning?

Sounds like the shrimp's
startin' to hallucinate.

[boy 1 grumbles]

[Gawain] It looked like the flash
I see when I really connect,

when my club hits the ball.

Only his was way brighter
than mine ever is.

- [tense music continues]
- [footsteps]

Oh, good. There's my ball. Huh?

Ha-ha! In your face! USA! USA!

[boy 2] Three hundred thirty yards,
and with a 3-iron too!

Way to go, Quester!

He not only beat him,
he beat him using a lighter club,

just to show how much better
the American team is.

It's so freaking obvious.

The troll might as well just hang it up
and head back to Japan.

- [Quester] Do you really think so?
- [both] Huh?

He dropped his shot right in the middle
of the fairway in a perfect spot,

while I landed mine here in the rough.

I struck with full force,
mostly ignoring direction,

while he probably factored in
the narrow fairway

and unconsciously backed off the power.

Wh... what are you saying?

[Quester] I'm saying, he didn't
hit the ball as far as he could have.

[boy 3] Hmm?

But... if I use a driver next time,

there's no way
he could beat me on distance.

Hey, get ready.

- You've still got these two to take on.
- [both gasp]

Are you giving up already?

Man, if he beats either one of us,

then he wins
and all three of us are losers.

Yeah. You go first.

Don't worry about it, guys.

This is why I used the 3-iron.

- [downcast music plays]
- [whimpering]

[sobs] No. I lost.
I don't deserve to continue.

[both sigh]

I understand.

But I take back those things
I said about you earlier.

[Gawain sobs]

I didn't expect a player
from the Japanese school

to be half as good as you are.

So... I'm sorry for making fun of you.

I'm looking forward to the match.

- [whimpers]
- [boy 3] Ha-ha! Loser!

- [laughing snidely]
- [music continues]

[Quester] The power of his drive though.

What was that flash of light
when he hit the ball?

It looked like lightning or something.

[Quester] And what he said
about the flash... can he see them?

Could it be that he too has... the gift?

[music fades out]

[Liebel] Lancelot, come on.
Can you please help us look for Gawain?

Do you have to polish your clubs now?

[exhales]

He'll show up eventually.

He wanders off.
It's pretty typical of him, really.

You're acting pretty cold-hearted
towards Gawain.

And you're not being
very trusting of him, are you?

[Liebel grunts]

Clinging to someone
is not the same as friendship.

I'm not clinging. I just...

- [door opens]
- [both] Huh?

- [Liebel] Gawain, is that you?
- [Gawain sobbing, sniffling]

[Liebel] Gawain...

[boy 2 laughing heartily]

[boy 3] Then the little shrimp
broke down on the fairway

and started crying.

[boy 2] We got nothing to worry about
from those Japanese school losers.

We're gonna crush 'em!

Proof that an empty barrel
makes the most noise.

Or maybe just what he wanted you to think.

- [boy 2] What's that supposed to mean?
- Huh? Yo!

Quester!

How come you didn't bother
taking your girlfriend

on this practice round?

It wasn't really much of a practice.

We were just out
taking a few swings after lunch.

That's not what James
and Charles are saying.

What are you trying to cover up?

We heard you just destroyed
some kid from the Japanese school.

You make it sound like
I beat him up or something.

He and I just hit
a couple of drives for distance.

And? How was he? Could he play?

I don't really know about that.
We'd have to play an actual game.

But Bilford... I did learn
an interesting thing about him,

something I definitely didn't expect.

He may have a gift
that's very special indeed.

[both] Hmm?

- [James] Huh?
- [Charles] What?

What? That's impossible!

How could the Japan school
have someone like that?

- [Bilford] I wouldn't be so sure.
- [Quester] Hmm?

On the official tournament rosters,
when you look at the Japanese team,

every single one, except for Todoin,
was recently replaced with someone new.

But listen, it doesn't make any difference
who's on the Japanese team.

Bridget.

- James.
- Hmm.

- Charles.
- [snickers]

Kate.

And Raydil.

The only real enemy for all of us here
is the Brits, and don't anyone forget it.

Little squirt, where are you?

[Gawain sobbing]

Ah, here's where everybody is.
But what are you guys... Huh?

[Gawain crying]

What's he crying about?

Aw. Dry those tears, little squirt.
What's this all about, huh? Come on.

He's still too upset
to tell us what happened.

Maybe he's nervous about the competition.

[Gawain sobbing]

How can I admit that I lost?

That he beat my drive with only an iron.

It's... it's just too humiliating.

[Lancelot sighs]

Just leave him alone for a while.

If he doesn't want to talk,
he doesn't want to talk.

Are you serious?
How can you be so insensitive?

Exactly! Just look at the poor kid!

Ugh!

That's no way
to treat your teammate, Lancelot!

Have a heart!

- So harsh.
- [Gawain sobbing]

Hey. Listen here.

It's okay to show your feelings.

[Gawain] Yeah?

[breathes shakily]

- [whimpers]
- Yeah. Think about it.

The other day, you listened to me whine.
This is just like that.

[whimpering softly]

Are you sure?

- [sobs]
- [Liebel] Mm-hmm.

[sobbing] The thing is, I was so sure
that no one could ever beat me at driving.

[sobs]

So... so when these three guys
from the American school

started making fun of me,
I accepted their challenge.

[sniffles] But I lost, and it was so...
so embarrassing, and...

- [sniffles] Oh, I'm just so frustrated.
- Oh, little squirt.

[Liebel] Aren't you getting
a little ahead of yourself?

[sniffles] Huh?

- [stirring music plays]
- The games haven't started yet, after all.

You've still got plenty of chances
to beat them out on the course.

Don't let yourself get upset
about one little setback.

- [Gawain whimpers]
- You'll get 'em next time. Okay?

[sobs] Yeah. Okay.

[Yumiko] Wow. Liebel is such a nice guy.

You and I will play a round tomorrow.

So go cheer up, and be ready.

Huh?

[sniffles]

Okay.

[music fades out]

[birds chirping]

[Gawain groans]

- Aah!
- Ow!

- Ahh.
- [Liebel whimpers]

Wake up! Wake up, everybody!

- Time for practice! Let's get going!
- [snores]

Come on! Up and at 'em!

- Let's go! Let's go! Let's go!
- [Platalissa] Uh.

Huh?

[Liebel] Slow down.

Glad to see you're back
to your old self again.

I'm always my old self, Liebel.

Ha-ha-ha!

[chuckles]

[Gawain] Let's go!

I'm gonna hit a shot as good
as that American kid did yesterday.

No. I'm gonna hit one even better.

But can I really do that?

Well... all I can do is try
and use every bit of my strength.

- [dull clack]
- [murmurs nervously]

Huh.

Oh.

Gawain?

[laughs sheepishly]

Whoa. I really messed that up.

Oh, I guess I was a little too tense
on the backswing, huh?

Yeah, a little bit.

I've never seen you
top the ball like that.

[Gawain] Well, it's something
a little bit new

I just thought I'd try out.

It's weird.
I thought I hit the core so hard.

All right, let's try that again.

[dull clack]

[murmurs nervously]

[gasps]

[groans anxiously]

Gawain, are you okay?

Huh. I'm fine,
just not all the way woken up yet.

You know how it is. [chuckles]

[murmurs in surprise]

- Why?
- [thwack]

- Why?
- [thwack]

- Why?
- [thwack]

[Charles] Hey, look.
It's the shrimp again.

[Kate] Oh, is that the Japanese kid
you creamed yesterday?

Yeah, bro. The one who cried
like a baby after we beat him.

[Charles laughs]

[Raydil] From what I heard,
you two didn't beat anyone.

[Gawain panting heavily]

[Liebel] Gawain, what in the world
is going on with you?

I don't know. Something's not right.

It's like I've never swung
a golf club before.

- [James] Ah-ha-ha-ha!
- Huh?

Poor baby's got the yips, huh?

Off the course, losers! Time for the pros!

We've got company. I'm guessing
these are our American friends.

[Gawain] This is bad.
I can't stop shaking.

I'm gonna get myself kicked off the team
if I don't snap out of it.

- [whimpers]
- That's not gonna happen.

We can fix this.

[Gawain] But driving
is the only thing I'm good at doing.

If I can't drive... then...

then what good am I?

[whimpers]

- [cries]
- [Liebel grunts]

Gawain! Uh... [grunts]

- Gawain, wait up!
- [Kate chuckles]

When Quester said this kid had a gift

and he had to break out the 3-iron
to humiliate him,

I figured he must be something special.

But now that I've seen him,
I don't get what the fuss was about.

- Huh? Hang on. Who's this?
- [boys] Huh?

Judging by your loud voices,
you must be the Americans.

We know who we are, bro.

My name is Lancelot, from Japan.

Well, whatta ya know? Another one.

Huh?

Isn't that interesting?

I know. How would you like
to practice with us?

Kate, have you lost your mind?

We don't want an outsider spyin' on us.

[Kate] But think
of the psychological advantage.

We'll have destroyed two of their players
before the games even start.

[both grunt, snicker]

- [Kate] So whatta ya say?
- [chuckles] Take it easy on me.

All right, let's go do it.

Just follow us.

[James] Yeah! And don't go
and chicken out on us now either.

[wind gusts]

[Lancelot] I won't.

[Raydil] We'll play the tenth.
It's a short hole.

[Kate] And let's have the players
be Lancelot, along with me and Raydil.

Hey. What about...

- Just do what I tell you.
- [groans]

[softly] We're gonna show this guy
just how outmatched he is here.

But just in case,

we'll have you two to put in the fix,
so go wait on the green.

- Oh, yeah, right.
- [Charles] Oh, okay.

[Raydil] How do we decide
the order of play?

- [Lancelot] You guys can have the honors.
- [Kate] Okay.

In that case, I'll go first.

One hundred and fifty yards.

Tailwind is negligible.

Raydil was a semi-pro baseball player
back in his younger days.

He was a home run hitter,
and with that kind of power,

he can hit it 150 yards
with just a sand wedge.

[Lancelot] Cool.

[grunts]

[clang]

Yes, indeed, that was well hit.

All right, I'm next. Just watch this.

By the way, my strength
as far as golf shots has always been...

I don't need your life story. Please hit.

[Kate growls]

All right then. Fine.

Wow. This guy sure has some nerve
talking to me like that.

Ha!

Hmm.

Well, good luck beating that.

You're gonna need a pretty amazing shot
if you think you... [gasps]

- Uh. What?
- [Raydil] A putter?

[Kate] You can't tee off from here
with a putter.

[Lancelot] Hmm.

I only came out here
to practice my putting,

so it's all I brought.

This guy can't be for real.

Everybody knows a putter only has
maybe four degrees of loft at best.

There's no way you can reach the green
from here with that club.

[Lancelot] There you go again
with all the talking.

[Kate grumbles]

[Lancelot] Whatever loft
the situation requires, you must create.

[thunderous thwack]

[grunts] That's impossible.

[both murmur in shock]

Wha...

He dropped that even closer
than Kate or Raydil.

What are we gonna do?
We can't let that guy win.

- [James] Huh?
- Hmm?

[both snicker menacingly]

[Kate] I gotta admit,
this Lancelot guy's pretty good,

despite the arrogant attitude
and the spoiled-brat name.

But with a putter, there's no way
he could've kept it on the green.

Oh. Looks like me and Raydil
are right at the cup.

I don't see yours though, Lancelot.
Where's your ball?

- [James] Yo! Lancelot's over here!
- [all] Hmm?

[Charles] Tough break, pal! [laughs]

[Kate] I knew it.

He couldn't put backspin on it
with the putter, and his shot went long.

[chuckles]

[Charles] Your turn, Lancelot.
Take your second shot.

[Lancelot] Fresh footprints.

Could they have been
any more obvious about it?

[Charles chuckles] The idiot doesn't even
realize we moved his ball.

[Kate] Raydil and I can both
one-putt this from here.

There's no way we can lose.

[Lancelot] The elevation difference
is ten feet.

Distance to the hole is 26 feet.

I can sink this with one putt.

[suspenseful music plays]

But for Gawain's sake, it's best
that I teach these bulls a lesson.

[ethereal humming]

[hum fades]

Right.

[music intensifies]

Did he turn his putter
sideways to the ball?

[Lancelot grunts]

Ha. What a loser.
That ding-dong hit the ball way too hard.

At that speed,
he'll roll right past the cup.

What a beginner mistake, right?

It makes you wonder

what these Japanese school kids
are even doing here.

- [whizzing]
- [music swells]

[Charles] What the heck?

Now the ball's rolling back
toward the cup!

How the heck did he do that?

That ball had to have
some serious spin on it.

But even if he managed that with a putter,

he still would have had to calculate
the distance and the direction

and the angle of turn
in order to putt it in.

How is all that even humanly possible?

What's the holdup? You two are next.

Well, obviously. I know that.

He must have just got lucky
with that ridiculous shot.

Anyway, as long as I one-putt this,
we'll still be tied with a birdie.

Just keep your cool now, Katie girl.

[Raydil grunts]

Kate don't putt yet!

What's the big idea
of yelling at me when I'm putting?

[grunts]

Aah!

What happened?

[Raydil] The spin on Lancelot's putt
must have changed the grain of the grass.

[Kate] I should have checked the grain.
I can't believe I didn't notice that.

Currently, birdie versus par.

Let's see what you've got, Raydil.

You better drain this putt, Raydil,

'cause there's no way I'm losing
to some Japanese school snob

with a weird name!

The American school's reputation
is on the line!

- [Raydil] Shut up already.
- Huh?

[Raydil] Anyway, I'm not going to miss.

Distance is only five and a half feet,

but I need to hit it harder in order
to get through that change in the grain.

[suspenseful music continues]

Go in!

[all] Aah!

How can that be?

I... I hit it plenty hard enough

to carry the ball
right through a change in the grain.

What in the world?

This isn't just a change
in the grain of the grass.

This is a groove. It's a deep groove.

No way. You mean he spun it so hard,
it dug a trench in the green?

That's right. On purpose.

- [Lancelot] Do you still want to continue?
- [both murmur]

I'm game if you are.

[music ends]

[Bridget] What are you guys doing
back so soon? Done practicing already?

- What's up?
- [Americans sigh]

What is it? What happened, Raydil?

We played against this guy
who was just too much.

Wait. Who?

[gasps] Too much?
What's this with other schools?

Hang on a sec, Bridge.

Who was it, this guy you played?

He was good?
Bet it was Tristan from the Brits.

[Raydil] Mm-mm.

- The Japanese school.
- [Quester scoffs]

[Raydil] His name is... Lancelot.

You wanted to talk?

I want to ask you about little squirt.
Do you know why he was crying?

Yes. He was defeated
by the American students, rather badly.

If that's the case, why'd you give him
the cold shoulder yesterday?

Aren't you his friend?

[Lancelot sighs softly]

Would a friend listen to his whining?

Can't a friend watch quietly
over him instead?

Because, after all,

it's his problem to solve.

[Yumiko] Hmm...

[sighs]

Which is the better friend, I wonder.

Oh, hang on.

You think it's okay
for the American school guys

to brag about being better than us?

[chuckles] I wouldn't worry.

They won't be bragging
for the next little while.

Oh?

[chuckles softly]

[pants] Where is he?

Hey!

Hey, Gawain!

Gawain, where are you?

[melancholy music plays]

I have no clue how to fix this.

What now? What am I going to do?
