- I was up all night because Yumiko snores.

I wonder what's going on
with the British team.

I haven't seen them,

and they didn't show up
for yesterday's joint practice.

Yeah, you're right.

The only one I saw from that team
was Platalissa's sister.

But this is the British team's
home course,

so maybe they feel like
they don't really need to practice here.

- Or perhaps it means...
- Huh?

...that they don't think
we're much of a threat.

- That's some pretty negative thinking.

[Todoin] Lancelot is right.

They're taking everyone else lightly.

- It's not just our team.

But can you blame them?

In ten Camelot Cups,

the Japanese have never won.

Not in the school competition
or in the individual.

And even the American team
has only won twice.

[gasps]

Meaning that...
the British team has won eight?

[Todoin] Correct.

And the previous year's winner
gets to host the next cup

on their home course.

Ahh. So I guess that would explain
why the cup is held in England this year.

Yeah.

Well then, shall we see to it
that they all visit Japan next year?

[Todoin chuckles]

EPISODE 15- CAMELOT CUP COMPETITION

[Yumiko] Starting to get exciting,
isn't it?

[Gawain] It sure is,

but... I don't really understand
how the tournament's all set up.

How does this whole cup competition work?

Well, this year, word is, the format
is going to be a six-player skins match.

What the heck is that?

[Liebel] I can explain it.

The Japanese, British,
and American schools

will each choose pairs within each team.

Then we play a round
with those three pairs of six people.

Each pair from each team uses
only one ball and hits it alternatingly.

That's a three-ball six-player match.

Ahh.

Where does the "skins" part
come in though?

Is it different from a usual golf game?

Yeah.

Usually we compete
for the lowest total score on 18 holes,

which we call "stroke play."

But when you're playing in a skins match,
each of the 18 holes is worth one point,

and the pair that shoots the best
or lowest score on a hole wins that point.

What if two pairs end up
with the same score on a hole?

Then that point gets carried over
to the next hole.

And what can happen, for example,

is if all the first four holes
end up tied,

the pair who scores better
on the fifth hole

gets all five points, all at once.

In skins play, it's possible
to turn the tables on your opponents

with just a single win.

Which means that,
even if we get a great score on a hole,

we only get a tie
if another team shoots the same.

So some serious gamesmanship
will be necessary.

In other words, we have to sh**t to win
and not just to tie,

because a dang tie won't get us anywhere.

I've thought long and hard about it,

and here are the pairs that will compete
in the Camelot Cup this morning.

You're both A-level players
and the best two from the Japanese school.

- [music stops]

Statistically, this pair has
a much better chance of success.

With your impressively precise
and solid style,

your opponents' pace won't be a factor.

But why Wanglian? [wailing]

Quit your whining. It's embarrassing.

- [murmuring anxiously]
- [Aria] And the third and final pair is...

- Lancelot and Gawain.
- [rousing music continues]

[gasps] Whoa! Awesome!

[grunts]

That's fantastic! Yay!

[Platalissa] What a relief.

Now I can focus
on the individual competition.

- [whispers] Platalissa.
- Huh?

Did you tell Ms. Aria your plans?

[whispers] No, I didn't.
Good thing you got picked.

Yeah.

[in baby voice] Wait a sec!
Why'd you pick Gawain, Ms. Aria?

He was last in the tryouts.

Aah! Why'd you have to rub it in?

The third pair was a difficult choice,
I'll be the first to admit.

I'm simply not aware
of their potential yet.

But what I liked about these two
was their opposite talents.

I know it's a risk,
but I do still like our chances.

Gawain showed
he has expl*sive potential for growth

by massively increasing his drive distance
in just a few days.

So I'd imagine
that by combining his ability

with Lancelot's immaculate putting,

the two of them might be a dark horse,

which could even surpass
the Todoin-Liebel pair.

Of course,
I can't rule out the possibility

that it might also backfire completely
and end in disaster.

It's true that Platalissa
outscored Gawain at the tryouts,

but I've decided to roll the dice
and bet it all on Gawain's potential.

- [Platalissa] I have no objection.
- Good to hear.

It's a plan.

But please make sure
not to drag me down with your short game.

Ha! You won't have to worry
about that, Lancelot.

I'm pumped and ready to win.

Obviously, our pairing choices
are important

in this high-level competition,

but the matchups with the other teams
are important too.

If our top team faces off
against other top teams,

mostly, all they do
is stop each other from scoring points.

It's better for us
if they face off against weak pairs,

where they can score a lot.

I've been looking at the records,

and the Americans
always place their top team

in the first or third group,
alternating by year.

Last year, it was the third group.

If the pattern holds,
this year, it will be the first.

The British team, on the other hand,
always goes in order of strength,

first to third.

In nine years,
that order has never changed.

That makes it easy then.

We know the other teams both have
their best pairs in the first group.

How do we respond?

For the first group, we're sending

Gawain-Lancelot, the dark horse.

- [gasps] That's awesome!
- [rousing music continues]

It's an honor.

Wh... what? You can't be serious!

Why aren't we sending our strongest
against their strongest? We'll lose!

As I explained,

the most important thing is that we ensure
we're able to score maximum points.

With the top American
and British pairs in the same group,

it will be difficult
for either one of them to get many points.

And it would be the same for you
and Liebel if you were up against them.

So, instead,
if we put these two in that group,

they may lose,

but we also have a chance
for a major upset.

Meanwhile, you two,

most probably facing
much weaker opponents,

have a chance
to get the full 18 points for 18 holes.

Yumiko and Wanglian,

you two should be able
to score six points with no trouble.

Your chances are good

if you just stick to
your solid golf style.

- Fine.
- Okay.

- Don't worry.

We'll get all 18 of those points for sure.

- [Aria] That probably won't happen.

The schools will field
three sets of pairs,

each playing 54 holes.

That means 54 points available.

As long as we get
more than half of those points,

then we'll be the champions.

[high-pitched hum]

I knew I remembered that face.

[Yumiko] This can't be right.

According to this,
the Brits' top pair is in the third group.

[Gawain] Then they'll be going
against Todoin and Liebel.

But why?

I thought the British school always put
their strongest pair in the first group.

It's my fault.

I assumed, and that was very wrong.

- [Todoin] It's actually a good thing.
- Huh?

For me, knowing I'm facing their best
is a motivator.

And if we can win all the holes,
it won't matter who we're playing.

if we're gonna win this thing.

[James chuckles] Oh, wow.
This oughta be good for a laugh.

They sent up that little wiener
to take their tee shot.

[snickers] Yeah.
Here's the little prince of heavy-hitting.

Serves that Lancelot right.

Getting paired with that half-pint

means neither of them
are gonna win a single point this cup.

[all laughing]

[all whistling, blowing raspberries]

And all you guys are just going to
say nothing and let him try this?

There are two ponds on this hole,
and they are 80 yards wide.

And the only ways to play it
are hitting the green in one stroke

or laying it up between the water hazards.

And hitting the green from here
in a single stroke

means launching a 380-yard tee shot!

There's only one golfer here
who can do that,

and it's Quester freakin' Phoenix!

[Lancelot] Hmm. He's using a 3-wood.

[suspenseful music plays]

How's it possible?

Three days ago,
the light when he hit was just a spark.

How could it have grown
so much so quickly?

Does this mean he has
the potential to surpass me?

[crackling]

And he did that with just a spoon.

[Quester scoffs]

Quester's drive went way longer.

Which is irrelevant,
because this isn't a distance competition.

What's important
is the score for the pair.

And considering the difficult lie
he's left for his partner,

that shot was obviously a mistake.

[grumbles]

Well, let's have the final tee shot
from the British team's first pair.

[Ice humming]

[tense music playing]

[Gawain] Finally, we get to see
if the British team is as good

as everyone says they are.

[grunts]

Looks like about 260 yards.

A good spot to place it.

Short, huh?

I was expecting
someone from the British school

to hit it way long.

He still might be really good.
Hitting it long isn't everything, Gawain.

That's right.
A great golfer needs a complete game.

There might be hope for you yet.

[gasps softly]

- [Charles snickers]

Platalissa's sister.

That's the British pair's
second shot already.

So they'd have to sink a long putt
from there just to make it in three.

That means,
a birdie's the best they can do.

And Quester's ball's in the rough,

so they can't do any better
than birdie either.

[chuckles]

But we have Lancelot,
who can putt us in in one stroke.

That'll give us an eagle and win the hole!

We're about to have our first point.
Talk about a good start!

[Gawains] It's an eagle.
Oh yeah. He's our hero.

It's not too bad of a lie, right?

- [Lancelot] Not bad at all.
- [both grunt]

Boy, they're in really deep rough
over there.

Isn't that gonna
make for kind of a hard shot?

I'd say more than a little.

When the cup
is on a steep slope like that,

the ball never comes to a stop
anywhere near it.

Plus that's deep rough,

so it's hard to put any kind of spin
on the ball at impact,

because the club gets tangled up
going through the grass.

Not to mention how difficult it is
to hit the ball with any kind of accuracy.

[Gawain] Oh well. Them's the breaks.

[Lancelot] If I were him,
I'd aim for below the slope and lie up,

rather than try for the cup.

Okay.

Quester, would you pull the flag?

Got it.

[gasps]

Oh my. He's going to try
and chip that straight in.

[Gawain] Quester didn't doubt him.
He must think he can do it.

Can this Bilford guy really be that good?

[grip crunches]

[electronic music building]

Oddly... sometimes it's good
to drop the ball in instead of rolling it,

because if you miss,
it'll stop closer to the cup.

taken him a lot of practice.

No wonder Quester trusted him to make it.

Well, we're not exactly slouches

when it comes
to trusting each other either.

What's even more impressive is that

he didn't seem to feel any pressure at all
after we'd scored our eagle.

We'd be wise not to underestimate
the Japanese school this year.

[Ice grumbles]

I wouldn't worry about it.
