THE 2ND HOLE
"OASIS"
[tense music playing]
I never really liked playing this hole.
Since you and I had a tie
with Quester and Bilford on the last hole,
first tee goes to us on this hole.
- Right?
- Indeed.
I wonder how they're going to tackle this.
If you hit the ball long,
you drop it into the big bunker.
And if you try to force it over,
the creek is waiting.
The area in front of the bunker is safe,
but you can't reach the green
from that far away.
The only real chance for a birdie
is to hit that small fairway
floating in the middle of the big bunker.
Literally, an oasis in the desert.
Thing is, to hit a spot
only six yards wide and 11 yards long
requires an excellent sense of distance
and incredible ball control.
[Lancelot] The distance to that oasis
looks to be about 340 yards,
the perfect distance for Gawain's drive.
Can you hit it like you did the last one?
You better believe it!
You can count on me!
I'm going to pay you back, kid,
for showing me up on the first hole.
You'll see.
[gasps]
Just play your usual game,
and we'll win it.
You understand?
- Yeah.
- [music fades out]
[descending squeak]
RISING IMPACT
[tense music continues]
EPISODE 16: THE WAY TO VICTORY
[Lancelot] Looks like
he's still got his rhythm.
- [resonant clang]
- [whoosh]
Agh! Stop! Grow teeth!
Phew! I was worried for a sec there.
You're about 120 yards to the pin.
[Bilford] That was a perfect shot.
He parked it
right in the center of the oasis.
[Gawain] I wonder if Quester's
gonna use the spoon again.
[Quester] Bilford's right.
I just have to focus on winning this game.
Settling my score with you can wait
until tomorrow's individual competition.
[crackle]
[crackling]
Perfect shot.
He hit the front edge of the island
to put a brake on his golf ball.
I didn't know a spoon
could control a shot that much.
[Lancelot] I'm surprised too.
He played it as though
it was just a normal shot for him.
- [Bilford] Great shot, partner.
- Thanks.
[Ice grunts]
[Gawain grumbles]
We should be way ahead in this game.
Obviously, I need to practice harder
and keep on getting better.
What are you mumbling about now?
Ha! Oh, just talking to myself!
[groans]
Stop it, Gawain.
Keep your focus on the next hole,
and make sure we get the point.
[tense music continues]
[music fades out]
[Lancelot] She hit it
just over the bunker.
That's a safe strategy.
I'm going to go with the 9-iron.
Considering his putting ability,
I need to get it
as close to the pin as possible.
[tense music resumes]
Six and a half feet from the pin.
I would have liked it closer,
but that's about the best I'm capable of.
This should be an easy enough one-putt,
even for you, Gawain.
What do you mean, "even for you"?
That's insulting!
I do the best I can,
so have a little respect...
Oh? That so?
If you don't mind,
some of us are trying to play golf here.
Would you keep it down, please?
You're right. You're right. Sorry.
You think he's gonna try
and chip it right into the cup again
like he did on the first hole?
No chance.
That'd be impossible from 120 yards.
He's gonna lay up for a favorable lie
and get in position for an easy putt.
[Bilford] The lie is perfect.
One hundred nineteen yards to the pin.
And my swing is set.
[suspenseful music plays]
[gasps] He's aiming for the cup.
[thwack]
That shot's heading straight for the pin!
Of all the luck.
[Gawain] Whoa.
If it hadn't been for that random leaf,
it would've gone right in.
His swing had exactly the same mechanics
and form as his practice shot.
Does he not do anything besides practice?
Looks like we may have
underestimated the American team.
These guys might be too good for us.
[Ice grunts]
Scratch this hole. We should bail.
- I agree.
- Huh?
- Why would they give up?
- Common sense.
ENGLAND - USA
The Americans are only an inch away
from the cup, so that's a gimme.
And they did it in only two shots,
so they're sure to birdie.
But the English have already hit
their third shot, and they didn't sink it.
ENGLAND - JAPAN
So they can't do any better now than par,
which means they've lost.
But that means, if I fail to birdie,
then the Americans will get this point
and the point from the first hole too!
Guess you should putt it in.
Oh!
Oh.
[Lancelot] As expected,
the Americans made birdie.
[Gawain] Hmm.
I sink this and we'll birdie too.
Relax and you'll sink it easily.
The line's going to bend your ball
to the right.
So hit it to the left
by half the width of the cup,
and it'll go.
I've always wanted to know,
how can you read the lines so easily?
[Lancelot] I can just see 'em.
[Gawain] You just see... what?
I can't see anything at all.
What Lancelot sees here must be right.
- Half a cup to the left.
- [Lancelot] Hmm.
[gasps]
Damn.
- Too hard.
- [ethereal hum]
[Gawain] Agh! I missed it!
I'm so sorry. That was my fault.
It's okay.
That kind of putting line is the type
that can easily go either way.
And like I said, I don't expect much
from your putting.
Hey! Would you stop saying that?
And to tell you the truth,
I was thinking so hard
about the line you gave me
that I forgot to pay attention
to the distance to the cup.
[laughs sheepishly]
[Lancelot] I won't give you
any more tips then.
After all, I'm the reason
you missed the putt.
No, no, no!
That's not what I meant at all!
Don't stop!
I'm just feeling bad
because we let the Americans
get the two points,
and it was all my fault.
It's merely two points.
[Gawain gasps]
Do you mean it?
Yeah, I guess you're right.
[tense music plays]
THE 3RD HOLE
"THE END"
Oh boy.
This is the hole where everybody
kept hitting it out of bounds
over the green in practice.
That was only you.
Oh yeah. And thanks to me,
now the Americans have first tee.
This hole's got a serious downhill slope.
It's harder to control
flight distance here
than it is on a shot
that's parallel to the ground.
[Gawain] Yeah, and if we're not careful,
the ball will fly
into the valley behind the pin.
We have to aim carefully.
No hesitation at all.
He had total confidence
in his calculations
of the flight distance.
[gasps]
Amazing! He landed that
right next to the pin again.
[Quester] Nice approach, Bilford.
[Bilford] Thanks.
It really rattles me when I see
how his swing is so easy and smooth.
No. It only looks as though
it's smooth and easy.
He used the big height differential
to his advantage
and let the ball stop
by dropping down directly.
Also, he controlled
the direction perfectly.
He's quite the expert indeed.
And now it's my turn.
Huh?
I think an 8-iron sounds just right.
Is that an 8-iron?
Yeah, it'll probably work.
"Probably"?
[Gawain] I still haven't figured out
exactly how far I can hit with each iron,
but if I just hit the ball normally,
it should fly just like Bilford's did.
[tense music fades out]
[thunderous crash]
[Quester] Now I'm sure of it.
His flash is bigger than before,
and it's getting brighter.
Ha! Huh?
Agh! Out of bounds!
Nice shot, Gawain.
Regardless the club, you're quite capable
of hitting the ball great distances.
[whines] I'm sorry, Lancelot!
I shouldn't have taken the chance!
I still don't know the distance
of all the irons yet!
- I'm so, so sorry!
- Quiet now, please.
[chuckles] Pretty impressive,
hitting it that far with an eight.
He's powerful.
Hmm?
[wind gusting softly]
[thwack]
[Lancelot] That leaves the British school
with just a 20-foot putt.
With any luck, they can birdie.
And the Americans
will certainly make birdie.
- [Ice grunts]
- I pray they destroy each other.
[Gawain] What are you doing?
Hey! Where are you going?
I haven't hit it again yet!
Really?
Gawain, this will be our third shot
because of the penalty
for hitting out of bounds.
Even if we hit the green in one stroke
and putt it out, we'd still bogey.
We don't have any chance to win.
We should just concede the hole and just...
If I hit a hole-in-one,
we'll make par in three strokes.
And then what if the other guys
take three putts to hole out?
Then they'd both bogey, and we'd win.
A lot of times, it takes me
three or four putts. It could happen.
Where do you get off
comparing yourself to us?
- Quiet.
- [grunts]
[chuckles] Go ahead and hit again.
[Gawain] Hmm!
[thrilling rock music plays]
I'm gonna go with my pitching wedge.
An 8-iron was a little too much,
so this oughta be just right.
Same direction as before.
[music builds]
[high-pitched whir]
[exclaims]
This time I'm too short!
No way. Was he aiming for the hole?
His original shot must have enabled him
to zero in on the distance.
What I think is more alarming
is the accuracy of his direction.
He's no more than an inch or two
offline of the cup.
As you said before, he seems to see
the same things that you do.
Yeah.
[music ends]
[Lancelot] That bogey
was a disappointment.
And since the Brits two-putted for par,
the Yanks got a valuable third point
for their birdie.
[Gawain] I'm sorry, Lancelot.
We don't have any points at all.
You were right. I should have given up
after I hit it out of bounds.
And that missed putt.
Seems like I've been causing you
nothing but trouble.
[Lancelot] What was it you said
about a hole-in-one?
"It could happen," right?
There was a chance,
and you wanted to gamble on it.
We may have lost in the end,
but you gave it your best shot
with the remaining odds.
[Gawain gasps]
I don't regret gambling on you.
Don't feel bad.
Oh.
[Lancelot] In this game,
we're not going to win
if we're not willing to take some chances,
no matter how long the odds are.
[murmurs gleefully]
Sounds good to me!
[pants]
THE 4TH HOLE
"METEOR CRATER"
This time, I'm gonna crush you
like a filthy bug
and shatter your confidence.
Whoa. Bring it on, big guy.
Quester, why so tense?
- It's not like you at all.
- [Quester grunts]
Makes no difference how good he is.
He's just a weird little kid.
He's no threat to you.
[Quester] Why am I tense?
Am I jealous?
[Gawain] This'll be the first time
we've gotten to see Bilford's drive.
We know how good he is with an iron.
Maybe he's one-dimensional
and he's good at that,
but not so great with a driver.
Kind of like you, yes?
Poor at everything but driving.
Ow! Do you have to be so mean about it?
- Come on!
- Sh.
Smack in the middle of the fairway.
He set up their second shot perfectly.
It was a 300-yard fade.
I'll bet he landed that no more than
ten yards off from where he was aiming.
[Gawain] I'm starting to see
why he's the top player
from the American school.
- By the way...
- Whoa.
...have you decided
how you're going to deal with this hole?
Huh?
[Lancelot] As the name
"Meteor Crater" implies,
there are open bunkers
more than six feet deep waiting for us.
If you hit into one of those,
it's almost impossible
to aim for the green.
And there's deep rough on the left side.
The only choice is to go to the fairway
just in front of the bunkers and lay up,
instead of sh**ting for the green.
Well, that's not gonna work,
'cause I haven't learned
how to hit a slice on purpose.
So the only hope for me
is to just aim straight for the green.
It's 430 yards to the green though.
You'd have to gain
more than 400 yards of carry.
Even when Todoin hits 400 yards,
he only carries about 380.
But... [murmurs anxiously]
[Ice] All righty then.
[yawning]
[Bilford grumbles]
- [Ice grunts]
- [thwack]
[Ice] Hmm. Bad break, innit?
I'm in the bloody rough.
[Bilford] His skills and lack
of professionalism are disappointing.
But then, he is only
in the British school's third pairing.
[Ice yawns] So tired.
Enough with the sleepy-time routine!
Wake up, stop fooling around, and play!
Yes.
If you're not feeling well,
drop out of the game.
If not, go splash your face,
and let's get a move on.
What's that?
Why don't you mind
your own business there, yank?
- Quiet.
- [Ice grunts]
[grumbles] Whatever.
[Gawain] It's 430 yards to the pin.
I'm gonna take Lancelot's advice
and aim for the fairway.
[gasps]
[crackling]
[gasps]
What? What's the matter, Gawain?
[Gawain] What in the world was that?
There were two flashes,
and they were attracting each other.
[grunts quizzically]
Hmm.
Oh no, please.
You're not actually thinking about
going for the green, are you?
[sighs]
This is just madness.
It's not even a gamble
when you know for a fact
your drive can't go that far.
[Quester scoffs]
[grip crunches]
You're right. It is mad.
But I just know if I drive this...
[gasps]
...the current is gonna get me to the green
in one stroke.
I can just feel it.
[both gasp]
He's out of his mind.
His maximum distance on a drive
is only 380 yards, right?
Don't do it. You can't.
I can.
[sighs]
You're not about to listen to me anyway.
[chuckles] Quite the partner
they've given me.
But, Gawain,
forget about winning this hole.
Just hit the ball as hard as you can.
Ha. Thanks. You can count on it.
[Quester] Are they seriously gonna
throw in the towel on this game?
Or is something else happening here?
Why do I feel so uneasy about him?
Did I cause this?
Did that shot of mine the other day
awaken some power
that was laying dormant inside him?
- [crackling]
- [suspenseful music plays]
[Gawain] There they are. I knew it.
I was right. I don't need to
strike flash-to-flash anymore.
The club itself is attracting the ball,
like a magnet!
[resonant clang]
[hissing whoosh]
[thunderous crash]
[high-pitched hum]
[pinging]
[grunts]
[suspenseful music continues]
[Bilford] He missed.
But that was really close.
That ball carried almost 380 yards.
If that had hit the fairway and rolled,
the distance could've been more than 420.
[Quester gasps]
Fantastic shot. Really close.
Gawain?
[Gawain] I...
I don't know...
I don't know what's happening to me.
I have this overwhelming feeling
I can hit the next shot even farther.
And I can. I know I can!
The flashes keep getting
stronger and stronger.
It feels almost like...
almost like the power
inside me is overflowing!
[Quester gasps]
What'd he just say?
This is... rather strange.
[Bilford] Huh?
Definitely.
[music fades out]
[Lancelot] The bunker cost us
a double bogey back there.
Luckily, the Brits had trouble
with the rough and made a triple bogey.
But the Americans nailed a birdie
and took the fourth point.
We really can't afford
to let them win any more holes.
- Are you listening, Gawain?
- Huh? Oh, yeah.
You're unfocused. What's wrong?
[Gawain] Ha-ha! Nothing. Nothing at all.
[laughs sheepishly] I'm good to go.
Mm.
[murmurs nervously]
- [glove crunches]
- [grunts]
[Bilford] We got the point for the hole,
but I can't stop thinking
about that kid's shot.
That was incredible.
Quester, don't worry about that kid, man.
With your abil... Huh?
Quester, you're shaking.
It's just from all the exertion.
THE 5TH HOLE
"TWILIGHT ROCK"
[dramatic rock music playing]
Driver.
He's finally using it.
[boy] I can see flashes when I hit.
[crackling]
- [gasps]
- That's wild.
How can a kid his age
hit a ball over 300 yards?
[clang]
No way. How does this guy
hit the ball like that?
No kidding. His distance
and his power are unbelievable.
[Quester] I create flashes of light
when I hit.
[Bridget] You're a rock star, Quester!
[Quester] No one can beat me
at driving for distance.
When it comes to power,
I'm better than anyone in this game.
[dramatic rock music continues]
But now, I've finally met someone
who can challenge me.
So it's time to settle this,
once and for all,
by putting everything on the line!
[crackling]
[blast]
[sonic whoosh]
[music swells]
[music crescendoes, ends]
- [dramatic sting]
- [Lancelot gasps]
He hit a 440-yard green in one?
[whistles]
[Bilford] Impressive.
His drive still blows me away
every time I see it.
Gawain, you might have
just made a big mistake,
getting Quester so worked up.
His carry was over 410 yards.
That's unbelievable.
Gawain, don't let that
get under your skin.
[soft music plays]
[Bilford] Hmm?
[Gawain] Quester,
you're an incredible hitter.
Your power is amazing.
- But with the way I feel now...
- Hmm?
...I can defeat you.
He can't.
[dramatic music plays]
[Gawain] The flashes
are attracting each other even more now.
I feel so strong, I'm even scaring myself.
[gasps]
Aah!
[music swells]
[grunts]
No. Four hundred forty, right on the pin.
How is that possible?
[dramatic music continues]
[music crescendoes]
