[thwack]
[whoosh]
[tense music playing]
[music fades out]
- [resonant clang]
- [screeching whoosh]
Hmm.
Aah!
Aah-aah-aah!
[grunts] Aah!
[grunts]
[Lancelot] Oh, that was incredible.
Where did your ball land?
On the green,
just like I told you I would.
- [Bilford gasps]
- Are you serious?
Didn't think I could do it, huh?
[Lancelot] Well, I...
I must admit, I am surprised.
So the one holding us back
isn't always me, I guess.
Maybe you oughta try trusting me a little.
I should.
In that case, we're good.
[cheerful music playing]
Let's do this.
He sure did grow up fast.
Hmm.
I'm feeling a little bit jealous
of those two.
[music fades out]
[descending squeak]
RISING IMPACT
[ethereal hum rising]
- [ball clatters]
- [hum fades out]
Awesome! We eagled!
- [grunts]
- [Lancelot chuckles]
Eagle for us.
[Gawain] Since we tied
the British school on that...
EP. 18: THE WAY TO VICTORY
...the point carries over to the 13th hole.
At last, we go one-on-one with the Brits.
[Gawain] With Platalissa's sister, Sfida.
Huh.
[grunts]
Hey, Quester,
you're not still bummed out, are ya?
You should try and cheer up.
Don't take everything so seriously.
It's no fun for anyone
if you're all pouty.
It's just a game. The way you're acting,
it's like Bilford's out here on his own.
Come on. There's only six holes left.
Gawain, please. I'm just fine.
This is Quester's issue.
Let him be, all right?
But it's not fair to you.
It's pairs. Remember that?
And you're dragging your partner down
by dragging him
into your own personal issues.
All because you lost to me.
[Quester] Did you just say I lost to you?
This was more than just a simple loss
for someone who has always been
unbeatable at distance.
No, I lost to a little kid.
A kid who was no match for me
until just a few days ago.
I lost to you! [inhales sharply]
[yelling] How could you possibly
understand how frustrated I am?
[stirring music plays]
Oh, Quester.
- Well, you're wrong! I do understand!
- [gasps]
I came here believing
I was unbeatable at driving too.
It was only my distance that got me
into the cup in the first place.
But the very first day,
you beat me, and with a 3-iron.
And you think you're the one
who was shocked?
I was gutted, but I kept right on hitting!
And I didn't stop
until I got my drive back!
[stirring music swells]
[Bilford] The way to relieve
your frustration is to beat him.
He was able to surpass you, turn the tide.
The goal you and I wanna achieve
is much greater than just this game.
Don't you agree... Quester Phoenix?
[music rises, fades out]
[birds chirping]
[Lancelot] You're being
far too sympathetic to Quester.
What if that kind of advice
helps the Americans regain their momentum?
That's exactly what I want.
I'd rather win
playing against guys who are serious
than guys who've lost their focus.
[chuckles softly]
THE 13TH HOLE
"ROUGH GATE"
[dramatic music playing]
Whoa! There it is!
The famous "Rough Gate."
[Lancelot] Indeed.
To reach the fairway,
you'll need to hit your tee shot
over 160 yards.
[Gawain] Whoa...
But then if you hit it too far,
you're going to wind up in that creek.
[laughs]
That's no problem, Lancelot.
I'll sh**t for the green
and just fly over all of it.
We're goin' long!
As if there was any doubt.
[Gawain] Hmm?
[thwack]
[Lancelot] Just as expected.
The Brits played it safe
and laid it up in front of the green.
Certainly the smart move.
[Gawain] That shot'll get 'em
onto the green in two strokes.
Bet I can get us there in one
if I just aim directly for the green.
But... what if the ball
doesn't stop on the green?
It could just keep rolling
since there's no upslope in front.
But I can't hit it too softly either
or it'll go into the rough and get lost.
[groans loudly]
[grunts]
This is for you, Grandpa.
[resonant clang]
Don't tell me he's going for the green.
Now grow some teeth!
[music fades]
Oops. Long.
Which means, now we're in
the dastardly bunker with the high lip.
But the good news is, I kept us
from going into the rough, right?
So it's all up to you now,
my little partner.
- What choice do I have?
- [chuckles]
[crackling]
[both gasp]
[pinging]
He's into the rough.
Right on target.
[Sfida] He hit into the rough on purpose,
to use it as a brake.
[Ice] That shot was bloody amazing.
Oh, wow!
That's exactly what I should have done.
- It's not as simple as you think.
- Oh?
Too close to the green
and the ball won't break.
Go too far and you're in the rough.
It takes power and technique
to hit it strong and low like that.
Only someone with supreme confidence
in his ability can hit that shot.
[Gawain gasps softly]
Someone who's like a hawk
searching for his prey in the field,
with his piercing eyes.
Gawain, just know, I intend to defeat you,
one-on-one, in flight distance,
and above all, in this game.
Yeah! That's the Quester
that I wanna play.
[chuckles]
[chuckles softly]
Bilford, sorry for all that moping around,
but I'll make it all up to you now.
That's what I wanna hear.
[clatter echoes]
Eagle, and the Americans win another hole.
And they get the point
for the 12th hole too.
That gives them six.
They were up the spout,
but they're hunky-dory now.
[Lancelot] Three-way tie, six all.
Now the competition has really begun.
All right.
[dramatic rock music plays]
THE 14TH HOLE
BRITAIN 4 STROKES
AMERICA 4 STROKES
JAPAN 5 STROKES
CARRIED OVER
THE 15TH HOLE
JAPAN 3 STROKES
AMERICA 3 STROKES
BRITAIN 5 STROKES
CARRIED OVER
THE 16TH HOLE
BRITAIN 2 STROKES
JAPAN 2 STROKES
AMERICA 2 STROKES
CARRIED OVER
THE 17TH HOLE
AMERICA 3 STROKES
BRITAIN 3 STROKES
JAPAN 4 STROKES
CARRIED OVER
So it all comes down to the 18th hole.
And we carry over the five points
from back on the 14th.
So whoever takes this hole is the winner.
[Gawain grunts]
We have to win, Lancelot, no matter what.
Our reputation hangs on us winning this.
And we will.
We just keep our focus and play our game.
We win this hole, we take out both of them
at the same time.
Right.
[Lancelot] My whole body
is shaking with excitement.
In all the games I've played,
I've never had as much fun as this.
[thrilling music plays]
THE 18TH HOLE
"KINGS ROAD"
Seems like we're back
at the starting point again.
Quester, I don't wanna even think about
letting this thing go to a playoff.
Let's win it here and put an end to it.
Hell yeah.
Whatever happened before means nothing.
Right now, the only thing that matters,
the only thing that exists, is this shot.
And so, for Bilford, for America,
I'm gonna make this one shot
perfect.
- [sharp clang]
- [crackling]
[blast]
[music continues]
Just like that. Utter perfection.
[Bilford] Great shot, Quester.
[Ice] He hits a drive like that
and doesn't even bat an eye, the tosser.
Don't worry about hitting for distance
against either of those two schools.
Just keep your focus on our game.
- That's the key.
- Whatever you say, love.
But, blimey, I never expected
we'd only be level, this late in the game.
What are we gonna tell Tristan
and the lot if we lose this?
Aah!
Oh yeah! That's what I'm talkin' about.
I got this. And with your ace putting,
we're a sure thing.
Sounds good to me.
[rousing music plays]
[ethereal hum]
[crackles]
[resonant clang]
- Yes.
- [music swells]
[music fades out]
[Sfida] I don't wanna admit it to Ice,
but our lack of distance
really does hurt us.
Two strokes,
and we couldn't even make the green.
This is us.
Bloody hell.
Are you having me on there, mate?
That's 420 yards, innit?
That's a right rocket, that is.
How d'you hit the ball so bleeding long?
And in the middle of the fairway, yeah?
Hmm?
Hmm?
Hey, check it out, Quester.
Looks like the shrimp out-drove you again.
I don't know which of you two
I hate the most.
[chuckles triumphantly]
[Quester scoffs] I'll wipe
that little smile off your face.
[Ice] Humph. He's a proper troll, in' he?
Sorry, Bilford.
I hit it as hard as I could,
but I came up short.
- [Bilford] What are you apologizing for?
- [gasps]
Your drive was perfect.
Couldn't have landed any better.
You put the ball 100 yards from the pin,
which is the perfect distance
for my best shot.
A full swing with my approach wedge.
Looks to me
like the goddess of Camelot herself
is smiling down on us.
[chuckles softly] Yeah.
Nasty spot o' luck here, Sfida dear.
We're already on our third shot,
and we've still got 60 yards
to reach the green,
while they both got there in one.
Knowin' 'em, they might both
eagle from there.
Lancelot, this is our big chance.
Bilford and Quester are 100 yards
away from the green, but it's 70 for us.
That's easy.
I wouldn't start feeling
too comfortable just yet.
Huh?
[Lancelot] Bilford is sh**ting next.
Yeah, good point.
[tense music plays]
[wind gusts]
[Bilford] The wind is blowing
left to right.
I need to focus all my attention.
Wind... stop blowing, please.
I was gonna say "great concentration,"
but if he keeps at it,
maybe he's thinking too much.
Could screw him up.
[Gawain] He's taking his time
to get comfortable
before he gets into his swinging position.
[Lancelot] No... he's waiting for something.
- [suspenseful music plays]
- [wind fades]
[Bilford] And there it is.
It's true. The goddess is on our side.
And she smiles on us.
[music fades out]
[gasps] Almost in.
He almost sank his approach shot.
Ahh, it's not many players
can hit an approach shot
that consistent every time.
His ability to focus
and concentrate is incredible.
And not a moment's hesitation
in his swing,
even with the whole game on the line.
You can see why he was the runner-up
in last year's competition.
That was awesome. Great shot.
Hard to believe a ball could fly 100 yards
and not roll a single inch.
That stuff is what makes golf so fun.
[chuckles]
What a great attitude he has.
Now I'm stuck.
Time to match Bilford somehow.
So the Japanese are in a bit of a pickle.
If they can't answer Bilford's shot,
they'll lose the game.
We need them to pull out a tie here.
Then there'll be a playoff,
and that keeps us alive.
Either Lancelot makes a miracle shot
or the Americans win and it's over.
Hey, listen, Lancelot.
Take some deep breaths and relax.
[Lancelot] Sounds like
you're the one who needs to relax.
Huh?
You're missing the problem.
It's getting as close
to the pin as Bilford,
given the state of my ability
at the moment.
That sounds bad.
Do you think you can at least get the ball
close enough for me to putt it in?
- [Lancelot] I'm going to do my best.
- [murmurs nervously]
- [wind gusts]
- [gasps]
The wind's picked up again,
stronger than before.
The wind had mercy on us... but not them.
[Gawain] We have to at least
stay even with them
so it goes to a playoff.
[Lancelot] I can't rely
on Gawain's putting,
so I need to make sure the ball ends up
no more than a yard from the pin.
If it stops any farther away than that,
we've lost.
[Lancelot laughs]
[gasps]
[Gawain] How can he laugh
at a time like this?
[Lancelot] This predicament
is a first for me.
Up against my toughest opponents,
and on the toughest course I've played.
If I make the shot, it'll be heaven,
and if I miss it, it'll be hell.
[euphonious music plays]
With the wind this strong,
I can't calculate how much
the ball will get swept off course.
So hitting it high would be suicidal.
But I don't have the skill
to hit a low approach from so far out.
I can't go high unless the wind stops,
like it did for Bilford.
[gasps]
[dramatic music plays]
What are you doing?
[gasps]
What? Are you crazy?
You can't use a putter
for a shot like this.
[both gasp]
- [Quester grunts]
- He's gotta be insane.
If I can't hit it high,
then I'll just let it roll.
[music swells]
I'll read it all.
The green
and the fairway too.
[mystical whir]
[ethereal humming]
[music builds, fades out]
Is it an impossible shot?
No... it is not.
So, for Gawain, who's fought alongside me
for these 17 holes,
and for Kurumi, and for Kajury,
who've supported me.
And of course...
Are you sure about giving me
your spot on the team?
[Kuromine] Yes.
But
if you lose
without putting up a good fight,
then you'll be dead to me.
[Lancelot] ...Kuromine.
[chuckles]
Why am I getting all weak in the knees?
There's no reason for it.
I'm going to stake my pride
on this 70-yard shot.
I'm going to read the line perfectly.
- [dramatic rock music playing]
- [ethereal humming]
Now I see it.
I've never even heard of anyone
putting from 70 yards away.
It's impossible at that distance.
How can he read the line?
[Lancelot] The hard part
is getting the touch right.
This is for ten yards.
This touch is for 20 yards.
So that means,
for 70 yards, it's like this.
No, wait. That's no good.
If I swing from this height,
I'll miss the core of the face.
I won't get off a proper putt.
To make sure I hit the core,
the maximum swing width is 20 yards.
[softly] Here we go.
He's finally ready to putt the ball now.
You can't putt 70 yards
with a swing that wide.
Go ball!
[Lancelot] Got it. It's on the line.
- [gasps]
- I get it.
He made up for the lack of power
in the swing
with the speed of his swing.
Go on! Get in there!
[music fades out]
[gasps] Whoa.
We're still alive.
Gah!
Where's that dang wind when we need it?
Did I really just see that?
He was 70 yards back on the fairway,
and he almost sank that putt.
[breeze gusts softly]
[clatter echoes]
[high-pitched ringing fading]
[sighs]
- [Gawain] Ah-ha-ha-ha!
- [cheerful music plays]
Holy moly! It went in!
It sure took its time,
but just when I thought it was stopped,
it dropped right in.
I knew it was going in
from the way it felt at impact.
You're one super-talented guy.
Maybe.
But the only reason I was able to do it
was because of the incredible tee shot
that you put 70 yards from the pin.
So we're a good team.
- [clapping]
- Huh? Huh?
You guys won. Excellent game.
And we all had the honor of witnessing
an albatross here on the final hole.
Maybe you didn't know,
but no one's ever made an albatross
on this hole before.
Uh, an alba-who?
Not "who." It's a term for a score.
An albatross is when you score
three strokes under par.
It's more difficult
than a hole-in-one on a par three.
You two had to really work together
to be able to pull that off.
This was a genuine team victory.
And, Gawain, you beat me fair and square.
Huh?
Hmm.
[Lancelot] You sure are full of surprises,
Gawain. I'll give you that.
[cheerful music continues]
[Gawain laughing]
[grunts softly]
But as great as my partner was,
it was an honor
to play with all you guys too.
Who'd have thought
there'd be so many talented players
on one course?
Quester, and Platalissa's sis,
and porcupine hair, and old Bilford.
[Bilford] I am not old.
[Ice] And I don't have porcupine hair.
And now it's on
to the individual competition tomorrow.
And you bet I plan on
being the big winner too.
Well, we'll see about that.
You talk like you drive.
[music ends]
They made an impressive team.
[scoffs] Yeah.
I'm already thinking about tomorrow.
[Bilford chuckles]
Yes, but don't forget that, tomorrow,
you and I are opponents too.
I know.
[Ice] Oi.
Right pickle we're in now, innit, love?
How are we going to spin this loss
when we have to go face the others?
- [Sfida] We'll just tell the truth.
- No way.
More important,
are you still gonna go out with me?
Ooh. Ice-cold, darlin'.
Yeah? Ten points?
Fantastic, considering who you played.
What'd you expect?
Lancelot and I are a top-notch team.
- And we knew right from the st...
- Oh, Lancelot, you're amazing!
Hey! What about me?
- How did your game end up?
- Huh?
- [Gawain grumbles]
- It was a close game.
But we tied at six points.
Yeah, that's right.
We scored six, but that's all
the Americans and Brits got too.
It was tough, but we finished all tied up.
Oh, is that so?
Then together, our pairs
have already collected 16 points.
We're already doing far better
than we'd even hoped.
I remember Ms. Aria said
we needed 28 to win.
So we just need Liebel and Todoin
to score at least, uh, eleven-teen.
- We still need 12 more points to win.
- [Gawain gasps]
[Yumiko gasps]
- Let's go!
- Let's go!
[Gawain] Hey, I know.
Let's all go cheer for Liebel and Todoin.
[all panting]
Huh? Looks like we're too late.
They finished already.
[Lancelot] What's with those two?
They look like they've seen a ghost.
Liebel and Todoin
must've annihilated everybody.
[Gawain chuckles]
Hey, Liebel!
How did it go?
How many points did you guys score?
None.
[Gawain] What?
We got none.
[gasps]
You're kidding! You didn't score at all?
[Todoin grunts]
[scoffs] But how's that even possible?
You're the Japanese team's
number one pair.
And we were no match for him at all.
Not even close.
For who?
- [mysterious music plays]
- Huh?
[Liebel] The champion
of last year's Camelot Cup.
[pulsing suspenseful music plays]
- [music builds]
- The ace of the British school.
Tristan.
[music fades out]
- [theme music plays]
