a professional since he was 15 years old.

to win twice before the age of 21.

there's hardly ever been

[Tom] I always knew I belonged,

but there are always doubts.

My name is Tom Kim.

I'm 20 years old,

and I'm a professional golfer.

Oh...

Last year, I didn't have status at all
on tour until the end of the season.

[Tom] But this year for me, it's gonna be
important to show everyone what I can do

and compete at the best stage.

This is the funny thing with experience.

I feel like I don't know my way
around the clubhouse sometimes.

[chuckles]

I've always felt like,
"Man, I am the youngest out here."

Then, once I got on the PGA TOUR,
I started seeing all these guys.

You know, you see Rory hitting,
you know, 380-yard drives.

I play with Scottie a lot.
His ball-striking, it's unlike any other.

If I go for advice, I go to Jordan a lot.
JT, I've asked JT a lot of stuff.

I didn't have a lot of friends growing up,
so I'm excited to be around those guys.

-[Justin Thomas] You ever play this hole?
-[Tom] First time, first time.

-[Justin] Wow!
-[Tom] First time.

-Use a driver from this tee?
-A driver or 3-wood.

-You could hit either one.
-[tapping]

[Dan Rapaport] Tom has a lot to learn

about what it's really like
to be on the PGA TOUR.

-[Tom] Kind of, yeah.

[Dan] Golf is funny because you spend
all this time around your competitors.

These guys all play
practice rounds together,

and it's definitely friendly.

-You only do that sometimes.

-That is what you need to know.

[Dan] But when you spend this time,
it's like they're trying to suss you out.

What kind of competitor is he?

[Dan] Tom has to realize he is
really swimming with sharks out here.

[Justin] You have friendships
before the first tee time,

but as soon as that tournament starts,

it's just me versus you,

and I just...
I just wanna beat you. That's it.

I know that if I'm at my ceiling,

that I will beat anybody.

[Tom] I came to the course.

-[Jordan] Yeah.

Did you just go in

[Tom] Yeah. They had peanut butter
and, like, jam.

-[Jordan] Probably for the kids.
-[Tom chuckles]

-[Jordan] Which I guess includes you.

my 15-month-old, Rickie's 15-month-old,

and Tom Kim just sitting

There's a lot of jokes
about me being 12 years old,

and I just wanna be taken seriously,

and I need to prove
that I can beat these guys.

I've seen him do that
because he is very competitive.

He knows he can win
on any golf course in the world,

but I think those players
at the highest level,

they only respect winning a major,

and so Tom Kim has a lot to prove.

So, this is perfect. Obviously, you know,

[man] What's the, uh, story behind this?

[Tom] So, I got this as a gift.

I nicknamed myself Thomas, and my parents
always told me how much I loved the show.

I always had, you know,
Thomas in my hand, apparently,

when I was... when I was a young kid.

[soft piano music playing]

[Tom] I was born in Seoul, South Korea.

My dad and my brother
would go out to the golf course.

I loved riding the golf cart.

And then it transitioned to...
I started chipping and putting,

and naturally started to play golf.

This is my first World Golf Ranking win,
this small trophy right here.

I turned professional
at the age of 15 on the Asian Tour.

I never really had thoughts
of playing college golf.

The main goal was to play on the PGA TOUR.

I thought once I got to the PGA TOUR,
I'd succeeded in life. I'm done.

But it's actually once I got here,
it was like, "Man, I want more."

[Tom] I want to win a major championship,

and the Masters is my first chance to win.

[hip-hop music playing]

[Tom] This is a welcome to the Masters.

And we missed a turn.

Very good there, Tom. Lovely.

and can accomplish this feat.

it's easy to just think

that the next thing that's gonna happen
is major championship success.

You don't know any better.

All you've experienced
in your young career

is success and winning.

[Tom] I'm not gonna lie. It's so hard
not to get aggressive right now.

the wind's gonna move it,

it's gonna spin right,

and we're gonna have
six or eight feet from the left of it.

I think I have more of a clear picture

that I get enough practice
and I get ready for a tournament.

to a different life, a different world.

It's been hard learning managing my time,
managing my practice schedule.

He has so many different roles
and wears so many different hats,

But that's part of success

that suddenly has a lot of people
that want his time and attention...

It's also very tricky.

[Dan] There's more demands on your time,
and I think it's important,

when guys get all this attention,
to not be starry-eyed and wide-eyed

and say yes to every media opportunity
or every interview that you have.

-You have to keep the focus on golf.

[Tom] It's been a very big learning curve
for me. It's very, very frustrating.

this can go one of two ways.

He can be known
as the lovable, affable guy

who went frolicking in the mud
and gave everyone on the Internet a laugh,

or he can rededicate himself to becoming
one of the best golfers on the planet.

I haven't played in two days.

-[coach] How's the alignment feel?

So, if I'm aiming at the green pin,
it felt like I was aiming at the carton.

So, you go to the top and stop.

See, the big thing for you is to make sure
that this doesn't work up in transition.

[Tom] I've always had
a great understanding of my golf swing.

But focusing more on, like, trying
to score and trying to adjust,

like, you kind of get into,
like, bad spots.

And I reached out to Chris.

I felt like I kind of needed someone
to help me just understand it more.

I feel like this year, the golf course
has changed for me so much,

compared to where I've played before.

The short-side misses are way worse
than what it used to be.

If I would miss it left in a bunker,
it'd still be kind of doable.

You always had a good lie uphill.

Now it's like if you go in that bunker
on the PGA TOUR, you're dead.

-[Chris] Yeah.
-It's a bogey.

And I've been making so many mistakes.

[Chris] Golf's a tough game. It's fickle.
It's easy to get into these little funks.

And it can seem like you're going
to never get out of it.

Then you put more pressure on yourself
'cause you know what you're capable of,

and it's trying to unravel this knot
that's way more complicated

than just saying,
"Hey, man, you gotta believe in yourself."

It oftentimes becomes this little puzzle

that a player and their team
have to try to figure out.

It's a double-edged sword
because I think you're...

"The perfectionism" is part
of why you work so hard.

It's part of just the precision
you're seeking.

But you want to have the perfectionism
be more about, like, the process.

Yeah. I dunno.

It's like I feel like I don't really care
about the process sometimes.

I just want to hit it close.

-[Chris] The outcome?
-Yeah.

[Chris] This kid could be
number one player in the world.

He's got that game.

He's got the focus.
He's got the work ethic.

It just needs to, like, come out.

You know, I think getting away from such
a tied-to-the-outcome type of mindset

to more of that process,
that is part of the maturity.

You talk about Tiger.
I mean, he was so into the process.

Yeah.

No, that's...

that's why he's the best, right?

It can be baffling at times,
especially for the uninitiated.

his journey into the spotlight a year ago.

to prove that he has
what it takes to compete

against the best players
in the world on the biggest stages.

There's no doubt
that Tom has made an impact

with how he's played over the last year.

But his results in the major championship
have not been as good

as you might expect
for someone with that kind of ability.

a grind, so I am just mentally so drained.

hard work beats talent

I have dedicated everything
just to golf, and I still do.

And my foot got caught,
and it slipped, and it popped.

So, it will be helpful to have a look

I am just so frustrated.

I feel like I'm ready.

But I feel like if I just have
more rounds, I can play well.

I do not wanna go back to the US,
stay on my couch

and not be able to do anything.

to do now is it can be strapped up.

It's tough to tell a guy
who does this for a living,

and does it as his passion,
that he has to wait to do it.

and the movement and the demand

is just going to continue
to injure that place.

So you gotta be careful
how you're gonna really handle that.

because you're thinking so much about that
that you're not thinking as much

about what happens if I make bogey.

It can take the expectations
and the worries about the golf off.

When you play through an injury
and make the injury worse

where you're gonna miss time,

playing on such an injury.

Like, if I get a cold,

So to play through an ankle injury,
that's gotta earn you respect,

not only from the people watching,
but from your peers.

definitely a big learning curve.

I think dealing
with adversity, expectations

helped so much.

[Tom] Man, I've come so far
from day one, you know?

I... I was in a hundred-something place,

and now I'm, you know, inside the top ten
of a major championship.

-[man 1] He's goin' for it?
-[man 2] Yup.

-[Joe] Where are you aiming it?
-Hard.

[Joe] Yup. Perfect.

-It's the right one, bud.
-It's never more.

-It's just a comfortable stop, right?
-It's just a nice, solid stop, bud.

[spectators murmuring]

[announcer 1] Only the eighth major start
of his young career.

[announcer 3] He is really fun
to watch, isn't he?

He was in a tie for 89th,
and then look what he did.

to boosting his confidence.

Goin' to the stairs, signing my scorecard,
that was, for me, it's flashbacks

of working hard
late at night, early mornings.

All those long, long hours
that I've always enjoyed,

but at the same time were still hard.

-Thanks for grinding, Joey.
-Yeah, of course, bro. Nice playing.

We're in for a nice weekend, I hear.

Tom put on a... a heck of a performance,
and I think that that just solidified

that he believes
that he has that... that capability

to go out and, even at not 100%,

be able to contend
in the world's biggest tournaments.

[Tom groans]

[Tom] Having my best finish
in a major was just very, very satisfying.

It was just a lot of... a lot of relief.

I think I've done this
three times in the last... three days.

I'm pretty sure you guys have
enough footage of it. [laughs]

And I've learned more
about myself mentally

of where I need to be

to be one of the best players
in the world.

All the guys you see in the Hall of Fame,
they have gone through the same path.

They went through failures,
they went through tough times

to be able to achieve
what they want to achieve.

At the highest level of the game,

where only the fittest survive,

Tom Kim proved, playing with that injury,

he's really as good
as any player out there.

because I just think
that game recognizes game.

about his mindset
and what's important to him.

But one thing we do know is
we're going to get an insight into that,

because he's being himself out there,
and we love him for it.

and I'm living my dream
playing on the PGA TOUR.

I work really hard, and I just try
my best every day to get better.
