week in, week out playing
professional golf.

You know, it just makes it feel
that… that bit more special.

been getting the most out of myself.

than any other year, um,

it's really showing
its importance to me.

[Rory] Shane and I
have known each other

from our junior days in Ireland,
growing up playing golf together.

We were on the same Irish team
and an Irish squad together.

Since '09, we've sort of
been on tour together,

and we live very
close to each other.

And, um, I'd say the
weeks that we're home,

we probably see each other

five times a week. Um…

It's nice to have someone like that
that you can pick the phone up,

tell him about anything, whether
it's about golf, whether it's about

stuff going on away from golf.

[Shane] Known each other probably
twenty… twenty-one or two years, I'd say.

When you're Rory McIlroy, who's the
greatest player of our generation,

you know, people are not
themselves around you.

So you meet people, and you
go hang out with people,

and they're not themselves.

But when I hang out,
I'm just myself.

And I think, yeah, I'm probably a breath
of fresh air to his life at times,

where, you know, he can just get away
and be himself and just be normal.

I feel like I'm good for him,
but he's also really good for me.

[indistinct chatter]

These are Netflix.

If it was up to me,
they would not be here.

- [chuckles]
- You were the one that asked me.

You were like, "Is it
okay if Netflix comes?"

I didn't say if it was okay
if they come. I was like…

Sorry, guys. You know,
it's nothing personal.

wanting to come and hang
out with us this evening?"

And I said, "I'm okay

them away from me for a while."

[Rory] What did you think
of that food last night?

[Shane] Very overrated.

me how great this place was.

I wasn't expecting,
like, it's fine.

[Dethier] Seems like as
Rory goes on in his career,

he's trying to tap into the things
that are important to him more.

And if you can go win with
Shane Lowry at the Zurich,

what better way to
go into the season?

To spend time with one of his
best friends in New Orleans.

Maybe jump-start his season
a little bit, find some mojo,

and get something that he
could really build off of.

[Zuël] Shane has often said that
he and Rory need each other,

and he isn't wrong.

You have to remember that Shane hasn't
won a PGA tournament in nearly five years,

and he has this incredible
goal to represent Ireland

alongside Rory McIlroy
at the Olympics.

He's desperate to make
that Olympic side.

And so this year, this
could be his last chance.

[indistinct chatter]

Should I go full out here and just
throw the golf shoes on too or what?

If you wanna nerd out,
that's definitely an option.

[Adam] So with as far as
the ball is going on this,

do we, like, lay up a little
bit? Is that the plan?

Let's see if it's
still doing the same.

I remember we stayed at a bed
and breakfast with you guys,

maybe at Dawson Creek.

- Yeah.
- [Nick] That maybe grade eight or nine.

[Adam] Nick and I grew up
together in Central Canada.

We played a lot of junior and
amateur golf across Canada together.

- [Nick] Remember the PNGA?
- Yeah.

And you were always beating me in all
the other amateur events we played.

I have nothing to
say that. [laughs]

[Adam] It's 'cause you can't
say anything. You know that.

When he turned pro in 2010,

we started living
together in Arizona.

Oh, that's in the
hazard. There you go.

It was always nice to have
somebody from the same hometown.

That's when our friendship
kind of took off.

[Nick] We have our
golf family out here.

It's just a small little circus
that travels around. [chuckles]

Adam and I play practice
rounds virtually every week.

Done a lot of golf stuff together and to
be able to celebrate good stuff together.

So it's been… it's
been quite the ride.

This week, being a team event, it
was a no-brainer to team up together.

[Adam chuckles] That's not
being played right now, is it?

Are you kidding me?

Glorious and free!

[commentator] The
RBC Canadian Open.

The story here that is
getting a lot of attention,

the Canadian story.

[pensive music playing]

[commentator] Taylor.

One putt to win, 72 feet.

[crowd cheering]

- [commentator] Oh my goodness!

Glorious and free!

Canada has a conquering hero.

[Balionis] Nick Taylor made
history winning the Canadian Open.

But in a close second

to that memorable eagle
putt heard around the world,

was Adam Hadwin. [chuckles]

[commentator] They're
storming the 18th green now.

They just tackled Adam Hadwin,

his friend, not knowing
that's exactly who it was.

[chuckling] I'd like to think it
wouldn't be one of my finer moments, but…

He took the sack like a champion and
didn't spill any of the champagne.

It was well done by him.

[Adam] You can't help but
compare yourself a little bit.

Certainly would like to put
another trophy on the mantel

to maybe not be known as
the guy that was tackled,

especially seeing Nick and what
he's done in the last 18 months.

Having Hadwin, especially in the
same sweatshirt that he wore.

He called it his Nick's good-luck
sweater. So that's why he wore it.

Just, you know, a testament
to friends and pretty special.

Everyone talked about the tackle,
but the amount of support and passion

that he showed, you know, being
right there, for how genuine it is

and really hoping me
to do as well as I can,

has… has been amazing.

[Adam] Genuinely happy for him.

Is there a little bit of a fire
in me that is annoyed that I'm

maybe not as good?

I never liked getting up.

As much as I don't like getting up
early, I don't like playing in rain.

Try and get as many holes

Rory always likes playing early, and
he likes playing 18 holes practice.

And I'm kind of the opposite.

Playing with someone like Rory,

uh, I feel the
pressure a little bit.

I love playing golf in the
UK and Ireland, to be honest.

I feel like golf is
more accessible here.

And me and Rory showed our…

all our upbringings or whatever, so, um…
I think that's what you get over here.

For an Irish kid growing
up playing the game,

I didn't see myself as the best.

I was quite a late
bloomer in golfing terms.

When I got the breakthrough
on the Irish national teams

when I was like 18.

I only got picked up on the Irish team
'cause Rory didn't wanna be on it.

There was 14 people on the
squad, and I was number 15.

[man] Did you ever thank
him for dropping out?

[chuckles] No. No.

No, we never actually never really
talked about it, so, uh… no.

Who knows if I would be here right
now if it wasn't for that, so…

In Ireland, we love
our sports people,

and we certainly put them on a high
pedestal when they're doing well.

[commentator] And now a massive
moment in Shane Lowry's golfing life.

[commentator 2] An
amateur, a 22-year-old,

teeing up with the pros
for the very first time.

Well-known in Ireland but unknown
to the rest of the golfing world.

[Shane] Rory is just someone that
I look up to as an amateur golfer.

You know, he was the level.

your best friends by your side is…

is probably the ultimate
place, uh, to be. Yeah.

time than, uh…

than living, trying… trying to
figure out pro golf with Adam.

I feel like you deserve a

[Joel] Any game we play,
he's hyper-competitive.

And he almost always wins.
The very frustrating thing.

He's the nicest guy,

With this being a Presidents Cup year,
a week like this at the Zurich Classic,

Nick and Adam can show
that they're a great team.

Presidents Cup is something that
I've always wanted to play on,

and it'd be incredible
to play with Adam.

[Wilson] Presidents Cup this
year, it's super important.

It's Team USA versus everybody,

minus Europe, so the
stakes are even higher.

[commentator] Tom Kim. Can't imagine what
he'll do if this one lands to win it.

[Balionis] This year, Presidents
Cup is being held in Canada.

And it's the first time there's ever
been a Canadian captain in Mike Weir.

All of Canada is going to be wanting as
many Canadians as possible on this team.

Mike Weir has said,

"I could have up to six
Canadians on this team,

but they have to
earn their way in."

"No one's just gonna
be handed a spot."

[Rapaport] Nick is a
proven quantity in golf.

Adam, not as much.

And now there's only four months
left until the Presidents Cup.

So if they could play
well at the Zurich,

that would send a clear
message to Captain Mike Weir

and maybe result in both of them making
the team and playing in Montreal.

[Shane] Post Ryder Cup, he texted me,
"Do you want to come for lunch tomorrow?"

And I'm like, "Yeah."

So we went over, and he said…
It was like twelve o'clock.

"A drink?" I'm like,
"Yeah. Why not?"

- [Shane] Okay, cool. Thank you.

So we sat there at the bar at his
house, drank a few bottles of wine.

I think I left his house about ten
o'clock that night in pretty bad shape.

But he had said, "Why don't we
play the Zurich Classic together?"

And I'm like,
"Yeah, absolutely."

Okay, see you.

[Rory] I just
threw it out there.

I've never played Zurich.
I'm sort of in this headspace

where I want to try to do some
things that I've never done before.

[Shane] He texts me around
Christmastime. I was back in Ireland.

"Are we still doing the Zurich Classic?"
I'm like, "Absolutely." [chuckles]

Ah, New Orleans, as
beautiful as ever.

It's nice. There's not as
much pressure, is there?

We had such a great time last
year, and we played well.

It was an enjoyable week. Did

He sat there and thought about
it, and he was like, "No."

So he's very driven to be one of the
best, and I think that's why he is.

of Rory in some ways?

No one's ever asked me that.

Now that you say it, I
probably would do. Yeah.

[Rory] I'm eating like an
American with one hand.

Like, Americans don't

of unnecessary criticism

from the general public, the

Stuff like that can
weigh heavily on people,

and I just feel like,
uh… like he gets a lot of

[Rory] Sometimes I've
struggled with the balance

of trying to be the best golfer,

trying to be the best husband
or the best dad or the best…

And sometimes I get overwhelmed, and
it can get all a bit too much for me.

And then, you know, I see

how Shane does it
with a lot of ease.

And sometimes you have to
focus on one or the other.

And, you know, he's
really good at that,

and I see him as, like, a good
role model for me in some ways.

And yeah, I can learn…

I can learn a lot from him and how
he handles everything in his life.

and competitors growing up,

And we've dreamed about,

that I play golf for a living.

I'm not trying to lose sight of the
fact of what's really important.

[Rory] I would be a pretty
miserable human being

if I judged myself
just on winning.

As much as golfers would say

that they try not to define themselves
by their job or by what they do,

I think it's hard for
me not to define myself

as trying to be one of the
best golfers in the world, so…

I've had a great career.

I feel like I'm playing just
as good of golf as I ever have,

and I still feel like I've
got a few more cracks at it.
