14x05 - Episode 5

Post by bunniefuu »

It can't just be me shortlisted
for the co-deputy head role?

I've got the job? Yeah, you got it.
I've got...

I've got the job! Yeah!

I just don't agree with everything
you're doing. But I'm in charge,

and your role is to support me.
And if you can't, well...

Why didn't you tell me
that you knew him?

He said that you and him
go way back.

He knows that we knew each other.

He just doesn't know...
How well we knew each other?

Well, yeah.

They weren't just school mates.
He was her boyfriend.

Donte Charles, will you marry me?

She said get lost...
Billy, it's fine. ..so get lost.

You are dead.

Daddy's boy!

BIKE BELL TINGS

Nice bike, man. Cheers, bruv.

Wait...

Are you all right, mate?

THEY SHOUT

Stay down! Stay down!

Stay down!

Stay down!

Oi! Oi, stop!

Did you see them? No.
Did you see who they were?

Is everything in place
for the deaf kids? Absolutely.

Their teacher Gill has been

managing the transition
with their school closing,

and she'll run some sessions
with the staff and the pupils

to make sure they bed in. And
they're all ready for mainstream?

It'll be a change, but, erm,
they should cope fine with support.

That's what Gill's here for,

to help us welcome them
to Waterloo Road.

Fingerspelling alphabet
and basic signs. Joe. Thanks.

Oh, actually, I think
I remember...

J-O-E.

Fancy!

You'll be appearing in the corner
of our screens next.

What's sign language for
absolute superstar? Oh-oh-oh!

Oh, oh, can you keep me across
any, like, additional support

for the deaf kids?

I've already emailed the team
with all the details.

I've asked Coral to take the lead,
including the staff briefing.

I didn't want to overload you,
Joe.

You have enough on your plate
as it is.

Yeah, yeah, it's fine.

Oh, uh, Wendy, any sign of Gill?
Who?

Our specialist teacher of the deaf?

Oh, I've not seen her.

The communication support workers
are here, though.

I've just shown them where they can
go to the loo and have a cuppa.

Already? Well, they're early.
I know. They're very keen.

Particularly the one with
the twinkly eyes.

I'm sure he's very good
with his hands.

SHE LAUGHS

I meant... I meant for signing!

Yeah, we know what you meant.

Right, shall we?

It's a bit retro, mate.

Hearing school's going to be fun,
Luca, you'll see.

I care.

But it was small.

And after a year, I still wasn't
great at signing, was I?

I get you're sad.
It's time to move on.

You had no chance.
I had it one week.

So, what are you going to do?

Oh, I can't tell my mum my bike's
been nicked.

I mean, you'll have to sometime.

Mike. He'll know what to do.

Who? Sergeant Rutherford.
He used to be my foster dad.

So, we're going to have to, like,
talk to the police?

Mike's sound.

Right, yeah.

Cool.

The deaf pupils have different
levels of hearing,

and most of them use
British Sign Language,

so we've booked a team of
communication support workers

to interpret for them. Yeah, sorry.

Where do the communication support
workers go again?

At the front of the class
or opposite the deaf pupil,

so they can see them signing.

Is that not distracting
for the other pupils?

Well, with our lot,
I reckon anything that makes them

look towards the front of the class
is a bonus.

LAUGHTER

But, as I say,

Gill should be here any minute to go
through everything you need to know.

Sorry, Coral,
will this take much longer?

Cos I do have lesson prep.

Maybe whilst we're waiting,
we can practise some BSL.

Yeah? This is...thank you.

ALL: Thank you.

Thank you.

That's blowing a kiss, Neil.

Don't do that in class.
It's not even nine o'clock

and he's already got himself
on grievance procedures.

Oh, give over.
Hey. The council called -

Gill's sick,
and they can't find a replacement.

What? Better go. Places to be.

Hold on, can we just have a
minute to...?

Let's reconvene this later
when Gill is here, I think.

I know staff of your skill
and experience

will handle it admirably.
Isn't that right, Neil? Oh, yeah.

So, everything else is in place,
isn't it?

She was supposed to be running
the integration sessions

for our deaf pupils. Well, they've
got their CSWs,

so let's just throw them
in at the deep end. No.

I'm not sure that's a good idea.
Well, what should we do instead?

We could bring back
the buddy scheme?

What, put a load of deaf kids
with a load of hearing kids

that they've just met?
At this school?

Deaf children communicate best
one to one.

OK, let's try it.

You OK handling it? Of course.
OK. Great work, Coral.

Just keep hold. That's hot.

SHE EXHALES

Come on, Coral.

Steve, am I, um...
am I sensing a problem?

Someone's made a TikTok about me -
Mr Savage walks funny.

You seemed a bit down about
that idea until Coral mentioned it.

Doesn't matter who said it, does it,

as long as we make
the right decision?

Do I walk funny to you? It...
It's just I oversee SEN provision,

so I just thought I'd be taking
the lead with the deaf kids.

Well, Coral seemed keen on it,
and she's ran with the idea.

Yeah, well, I would have as well,
if I'd known.

Look, it's all in hand,
so don't worry about it.

Yeah... I just want to make sure

that we're not holding on to
any tension

because of the whole Val thing.

I'm not playing games,
if that's what you think.

That's not my style. You should know
that about me by now.

Yeah, course, course, but just to be
clear, right,

I'm still on the team?

You are,
you're still in my starting XI.

But sometimes
I need you to play on the wing,

other times more of
a holding midfielder role.

You're still on the team, Joe.

Occasionally, you need to let
someone else

be the star striker, though.
Do you think you can do that?

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's good.

I mean, that's just my head
on a millipede.

In your welcome packs, there's
a map of the school building

and your timetables.

And these are your
communication support workers -

Riley, Jess, Chris, Liz and Ragnee.

They'll work
with their assigned kids.

I'm sorry that your teacher
of the deaf, Gill, can't be here,

but any issues, grab a CSW
and ask a member of staff.

Remember...

..we're here to...

..help.

We're here to help.

Uh, yeah.
For those of you that use them...

..the radio A*DS are in
that box there.

Luca, it says here you use one.
Do you want to...

Do you want to grab yours?

I don't use those, miss,
the sound's not clear.

So I'll just use the CSW. OK, fine.

OK.

Uh... Jared?

You'll have Riley as your CSW.

Luca, you've got Jess.

I don't know her, miss.

I'm sure you'll soon
get to know each other.

Oh, you've still got
your old uniform on.

Well, we'll pop into lost property
on the way to your lessons.

I mean, I ran after them, but they
had a bike, didn't they?

These were men? No.
More like my age.

Smaller.

I should have just grabbed them.

Well, you might have made
things worse. Hmm.

What about their clothing?
School uniforms?

Couldn't tell. Hoodies, whatever.

Look, they jumped me, didn't they?
So I didn't get a proper look.

I mean, you should be asking him.

Billy, can you tell me what you saw?

Just, like, two lads in balaclavas.

Did you see their faces?

No.

Height? Build?

Did they speak to you?

Nothing?

Nothing.

Can you just think?
Cos I really need my bike.

Billy, there must be something.
If you were that close...

If he'd seen something, he'd say.

OK. Well, if you do think
of anything, Billy,

let me know. Great.
My mum's going to freak.

I'll call your mum, Dw...

Dwayne?!

Right, well, can I go?

Yeah, sure.

Thanks, Billy.

Mike, will you do a bike safety chat
with Year 11 and 12 at break time?

Sure. Thank you.

Billy! I'm late for my lesson.

Is there any more to this? No.

Is it anything to do with those lads
who gave you those bruises

last week? Just leave it, Dad.
But...

PHONE RINGS
Hold on.

Donte, what's up? Yeah, I just
wanted to talk to you

about my maths GCSE. They said at
the careers fair

that I've got to re-sit it
to become a teacher.

And the textbook... Bill...
..it's all gibberish.

Donte, this is hardly urgent.

We've got a maths department
upstairs.

Yeah, yeah. Um, sorry, mate. Um...

Speak to Nisha.
She'll sort a plan out for you.

Billy!

You were talking to police.

Yeah, I didn't say anything.

I mean, I could have given them
that, and I didn't.

I'm not a grass.

So, like, we're good now.

Yeah? We're mates?

You wouldn't have done that.

You would not have done that for me,
would you?

Maybe see you at break.

Come on!

BELL RINGS

He seems fine to me.

I see him at lunchtimes
coming in to play his guitar.

Have you seen anybody hassling him?

No. He seems fine, happy.

Are you worrying about him?

Well, I've been worrying about him
for 15 years, haven't I?

I'll still be worrying
when he's drawing his pension.

Well, I've not seen anything
that worries me.

Do you want me to speak to him?
Maybe?

No.

No. I'm sure it's nothing.

Thank you.

Is it true Dwayne got beaten
up for his bike, miss?

I heard he fell off his bike
and knocked his tooth out!

Shut up.

Come on, speculation doesn't do
anybody any favours.

So let's just focus.

KNOCK ON DOOR

Excuse me. Sorry to barge in.

You borrowed your big brother's
jumper?

PUPILS SNIGGER

This is Luca, joining us
from St Jude's School for the Deaf.

And, uh, Jess will be
supporting him.

Great. Hello, Luca.

Can you tell him -
welcome to my class?

He's saying talk to him,
not me.

PUPILS GIGGLE

Right. Yeah. Sorry, um...

Welcome, Luca!

We're looking for someone to be
Luca's buddy, help him settle in?

PUPILS MURMUR

I'll do it.

Thank you, Shola.

Right, this way, Luca.

Lex, would you mind
moving over there for now?

Let me know
if you need anything. Just ask.

Just ask me
if you want to know something.

Well, I think being a buddy
would be really good for you, Libby.

Sorry, but after all that stuff that
happened with Dean,

I just want to focus on my work.
Are you sure?

Yes.

Fine, I'll ask someone else.

No, I could do it if it helps.

Oh. Oh, thank you, Libby! Um, Jared,
this is Libby - your buddy.

Hey! Hiya.

Good luck, Jared.

So do you know, like...?

Signing?

I started when my hearing went down.

Been about a year now.

I'm not as good as the other
deaf kids.

It's their first language.

But, yeah, I'm all right.

That's so cool.

Cool.

Cool.

No, like this.

Cool. Mm-hm.

Why are you talking yourself
out of it?

I mean, what's maths got to do
with PE, anyway?

I don't know. Counting in

It's 15, actually.

Ah! There you go!
See, you're way ahead of me.

I was never good at maths at school,
I never got any of it.

All that hippopotenuse,
or whatever that was.

No-one gets it.

Not even them
that put the right answers.

I just don't know if I'm up to it.

Listen... No, look, I'm not the only
one, you know?

You should have heard Savage when
I told him I haven't got my maths.

Oh, come off it! Last week, he was
all over me becoming a teacher,

and today it's like I'm a bad smell.

I mean, if it's not because he
thinks I'm not capable,

then what is it?

You're overthinking it.

Now, the Treaty of Versailles was
seen as diktat by many Germans...

Can you lip-read as well?

Mm-hm. Anything I say?

Eyes on the screen, please, Jared.

Now, the terms of diktat fuelled
resentment

amongst the German population,

which gave rise to Hitler... My dad.
..and the n*zi Party,

shaped some of the events
of the 20th century.

He is!

Don't be. He is a prat.

Now, I, for one, cannot find one
thing even remotely funny

about that.

Libby?

Jared?

I would like you to write for me
a paragraph, just a short one,

on what the central message of
An Inspector Calls is.

So, what do YOU think it is,
do YOU think?

Oh, um, try not to copy, Luca.

Me?

BSL Level 1.

Is everything OK?

Yeah. It's fine.

I'm trying my best.

BELL RINGS

Oh! The homework! The homework is I
want you to write an essay

about the contrast between
the Inspector and Mr Birling, OK?

Great work today, guys.

Right, if you've got a beef with me,
then take it out on me.

Knocking - rubbish, innit?

You forget I know what you're like.

I know all your little games.
You what?

His confidence was
already at rock bottom,

and all you had to do was give him
a little bit of encouragement,

but, oh, no, no, because your pride
was hurt, weren't it?

What are you talking about?

Is this because I didn't give Donte
my full attention this morning?

Is that what it is?
You said you'd help. Yes.

But I've also got a school to run,
Nicky.

I've got a load of deaf kids
turning up, a bike theft.

It's not even lunchtime!
It's all just excuses.

I've got stuff going on, Nicky,

stuff that has got nothing to
do with you.

Believe it or not, I don't think
about you every second of every day.

And I'm sorry
if that hurts your pride.

DOOR CLOSES

Sorry, um...

Are you all right?

Are you all right?

Do you care? Yeah, I do.

Let me help.

Help?

You want to help me?

Mm-hm.

Look at you.

Slow down.

Don't cover my mouth,
so you can read my lips.

OK. What's wrong?

Jess, she can't sign...

Jess can't sign?

I don't know what
the teacher's saying.

Right, um,
we need to tell Ms Walker, then.

No. Yeah, we'll tell her together.
I'll come with you.

And then we'll go and get food.

Tell her...then we can get
some food.

Chips.

Oh, chip?

Chip, yeah. OK.

Anyone? Yeah, try not to shout out
all at once, guys.

Right, OK, number one.

To reduce the risk of having
your bike stolen... Div.

..avoid cycling alone... What? ..or
in quiet or secluded places.

I said div. Do you need me to spell
it out for you? Yeah. Yeah?

It's D-I...
Is everything OK there?

Yeah.

Number two -
always know your surroundings.

Are you OK, mate? And number three,
buy the best bike lock.

Yeah, I should have had those lads.

So, we are going to take a record
of your bike frame numbers.

Next time, eh?
That way, if they are stolen,

they can be traced. Right.

Thanks for coming, guys.

Where are you going? Why?

I've got a job for you.

No, cos I've got, like...

Mate, look at that bracelet.

Beautiful! Right back where it
belongs! Come on.

You stashed it at school?

Yeah. Need it moved before
Rutherford finds it,

looks for fingerprints.

No.

No, I've kept quiet, that's enough.

No, we're not done yet.

But I'll get caught.
What, you? The head's son?

You could get away with
armed robbery.

But we agreed - we're good now.

I didn't agree nothing with you.

You could have had me
out of the school.

Could have had me locked up,
never would've seen me again!

Yeah, but...
But you bottled it!

You came running back to me
with my bracelet

like a good little doggie
bringing the ball back.

Mate, I knew you were pathetic,

but I didn't know you were
THAT pathetic.

Stay, doggie.

I've got lessons... No, you don't.

Lupin Street, there's a back alley,
leave it at the end of there.

Good boy.

Good boy!

Come on.

He can't understand her, miss.

Really?

Leave it with me, OK?

Jess!

How's this morning been?

Yeah, great.

Only I've spoken to Luca and he says
he can't understand your signing.

Just takes kids a bit of time to get
used to us, that's all.

What level of BSL are you?

His EHCP says it should be
Level 3 minimum.

I'm studying for Level 2.

What?! I stated
the criteria on the booking.

Well, you booked me.

You should have checked.

You took a job you weren't
qualified for?

What, you're the experts?

You're letting him down.
He understands me.

He said he doesn't.

Fine, stuff your job, then.

This place is a shambles.

And you, you haven't got a clue!

There isn't a safe place.

No, it won't fit
through the letterbox.

It's a flat-pack coffee table.

Oh, could you?
Cos I'm snowed under here.

Hang on.
Hi. Is this bad timing? Always.

Yeah, well, it's just
my daughter Izzy.

She's really struggling
with maths at the minute

and so I downloaded this practice
paper, got her to fill it in and...

Look, I don't mean to be cheeky
but is there any chance that you

could take a look at it,
let me know how she's getting on?

Which tutor group is she in again?

Yeah, well, she doesn't actually
come to this school.

What, she's not one of ours?

No, not you, Mum.
I'm talking to someone. One sec.

Please?

Right, this is a one-off.

Thank you.

That was the head, Mum.

I've been summoned to
a crisis meeting.

Right. OK. Bye. Better go.

Oi! Unless you're drawing a circle,
put that compass down.

BELL RINGS

SHE MOUTHS

That's easy.

Butterfly. Mm-hm.

OK, I've got one.

HE MOUTHS

You what?

Wait, say it again.

Elephant juice.
It's the oldest trick in the book.

I knew that. Yeah, right.

LIVELY CHATTER

CHATTER FADES OUT

CHATTER RESUMES

So, uh, did you manage to mark
the paper? Hmm, I did.

And I don't know how to break
this to you, Donte,

but I think you need to get on
to Izzy's school.

They're failing her.

Does Izzy have concentration
problems?

Um...

Concentration problems?

No, not usually, no.

Cos there was a few questions on
algebra that she started and then...

..nothing.

Um...

Hey, look, you don't think
that I could, you know,

sit in on one or two of your
lessons, just so I could pass on...?

Oh, no. That'd just be
a bit awkward, wouldn't it?

A big kid surrounded by little kids.

Oh, I didn't mean to say,
like, you're...

No, it's fine.

You know, I get it.

Well, you missed
the start of maths, Billy.

Where were you
for that half an hour?

Look, whatever's going on,
you're not in trouble.

I just need you to tell me.

I've been in this situation
loads of times,

kids who think there's nothing
that can be done, but there is.

There always is.
I can make it go away.

No, you can't. I can. I just need
you to give me a name.

Let me investigate.
I'll have 'em out of here.

You can't, Dad.

Look, I can protect you,

whatever's going on in your life.

I am your dad, let me fix it.
I promise.

Did you make that promise to Mum
as well?

Billy?

You couldn't protect her,
could you?

You can't fix anything.

You can't promise me anything.

But you make out like you've got
all the solutions,

but you don't even realise
that you're the problem.

What, you think any of this would be
happening if you weren't the head?

If you didn't bring me
to this stupid school?

I'm trying to help you.

Well, you can't.

YOU are the problem, Dad!

Me? I'm the problem?

I'm doing everything I can here
to help you.

You won't tell me what's going on!

You think you can deal with it
yourself?

You think you don't need my help?
Fine! Fine!

YOU deal with it, but you'd better
start standing up for yourself,

otherwise they will never stop!

So, we meet at the towpath
after school,

and Tommo's giving us
cash at the lock-up.

And how much will I get?

That it? I'm nicking them as well.

Mate, I'm the brains, though,
aren't I?

Here y'are, look.

Look!

Rave!

Oi, this is my light. No, we found
that on the way to school.

Yeah, right.

Dwayne, what are you trying to say?

Look, just tell me where my bike is.

It's got nowt to do with us.

You little... Yo-yo-yo-yo.
Go back, go back.

What's going on? My light.
Loads of bikes have that light.

It's mine.

Prove it.

You stole our light!

Do one.

We'll have you for that.

Yeah, right.

You need to give up all these
nonsmoking breaks, you know.

All that fresh air is no
good for you.

Look, I messed up, OK?

I'm sorry.

Just not had that many jobs
with my current fella and my ex

at the same time.

Still learning.

Hey?

It's Billy.

He's being bullied and he won't
talk, he won't say anything.

Oh, Steve.

I was pushing him before,
just pushing and pushing,

and he had a go at me about his mum.

Said if I couldn't save her,
how could I help him.

Lost my temper, shouted at him,
told him to stand up for himself.

Yeah. We've all been there.

I just keep thinking

if I could get my hands on whoever's
doing that to my son...

I wouldn't even care what happened
to me. Oh, hey, now come on.

That's daft talk. Yeah. Maybe.

But if I can't protect him...

..what's the point of me?

Just tell him you love him
and you're there for him,

no matter what.

Yeah.

You all right? Afternoon.

DOOR CLOSES

Can't get enough of me today,
can you?

You all right? I was, uh,
just updating the anti-virus.

Right.

Is it...?

Bug free? Yeah.
Yeah, it's all sorted now.

Thank you.

Yeah, all right, see you.
Cool. See you.

Oh, what the...?

Skills. Learned it off Phil Foden.

Yeah!

Hey, um...
I heard about the bike light.

What actually happened, then?
Not much.

So, it wasn't nicked, then?

Look, whose idea was it?

Because I know it wasn't yours,
mate.

You know, actually,

I'm volunteering at
Oakley Youth Centre tonight.

Why don't you come down?

Youth centre? That's sad.

Uh, excuse me.

It's got a pool table, yeah?

Yeah.

DJ decks, yeah. Yeah.

It's got weights. Feel that!

Ooh...

Look, it might be a chance to meet
some new mates? Hmm?

Just think about it.

BELL RINGS

Thank you for your patience, Luca,

but we can't get another CSW
till tomorrow.

But how will I understand?

I know you haven't used
this radio aid for a while.

I thought you could.
If you sit at the front,

I've asked Mr Casey to speak
clearly,

and I'll stay here in case
you need anything.

It doesn't work.
It just makes it loud.

Just for this afternoon?

Culture, right, can be drawn...

DISTORTED SPEECH

WHINING

DISTORTED SPEECH CONTINUES

You all right, Shirls? I don't think
he's a lost cause.

Nah. Boz is a rat,
just like his mate.

You're such a downer, you are.

He's right, though.

Yeah? You're taking a chance
getting him down the youth centre.

Bolt down your stuff.

Or we could actually see
a different side to him.

You know what? You two should
come down as well.

Us?

Fat chance.

Well, it might cheer you up.

Been a while since Kai left, eh?

What are you saying?

I'm just saying come down and see
some new faces

at the youth centre.
You never know.

Have you not heard? It's closing.

What?

That was Shirley from Zumba.

She's just told me
that she's cancelled class,

because the youth centre's
getting closed. Wait... Why?

I don't know. Funding cuts.

But I've just become a volunteer.

Hmm.

Guess we won't be meeting
any new faces, then.

I'm really gutted,

because my bum was literally
just getting like an influencer's.

Mum, there's more important...

There's more important things
going on right now than your bum.

Shirley's tough
but she gets results.

So I'm actually very sad about it.

Mum, we...we can't do nothing.
It's closing?

Keep your eyes on the treble clefs.

What? I'm just doing my work.

Dirty...

Oh, it's sick, Donte.

Yeah. Um, what is?

Someone's been spying on me.
Yeah? How'd you work that one out?

I found this in my classroom!

A webcam! Oh, they're getting off
on my trigonometry.

I'm phoning the police. No.

No, don't do that.

Why not?

Because...

..it was me.

Ohh!

Look, I was trying to help Izzy out,
all right?

Oh, come off it, Donte.

Pull the other one.

Cos I'm thinking safeguarding,
GDPR,

human rights, cancel culture.

OK, all right.
Look, it was for me. Obviously!

Look, I needed maths to become
a teacher,

and you said that you
wouldn't help me out

so, you know, I thought, with the
webcam, I could watch your lessons.

It was stupid, OK? And I'm sorry.

But I just wanted to learn,
honestly.

Look, please, just don't tell
anyone.

Well...

..maybe...

..if you help me out?

Yeah. Yeah, sure.

My car keeps making coughing noises.

I was going to ask Amy for a refund
under consumer rights...

Whoa, hang on a minute...

Hey, if you want me to keep
shtoom about your dodgy spy cam...

Deal?

Deal.

Shola? We understand people's
differences more.

Yes, well done.
And what can it reduce?

Discrimination, sir.

Very good.

We become more tolerant
of one another.

Now, on the flip side,

who can tell me what the
challenges are?

Luca?

MUFFLED: Luca, what do you think?

DISTORTED: Luca? Luca?

TAPS RADIO
Luca?

PUPILS GASP

What?

Luca! Luca!

No! Luca, if you fall,
you're going to break something.

Luca, just stop! Please.

A tiny bit, but I'm rubbish.

It's dangerous. It's dangerous.
Just come down.

I don't care.

Well, you can't stay up there
for ever, can you? Just come down.

BANGING ON WINDOW

SHE SIGHS

Joe, you know what?
I've got this. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

OK. Thanks.

Oh...

When I was little,

I had a deaf cousin...

..Angela.

We were like peas in a pod.

Always up to mischief.

Her mum and my mum,

um, fell out

so I haven't seen her in years.

Such a waste.

But I still remember
some of the signs.

Why didn't I sign before?

I thought I'd get it wrong.

But that's daft, isn't it?

It must have been really hard
when St Jude's closed.

I don't know what that means.

A-S-K.

Oh.

Nobody asked you.

Now you've no-one to talk
to at school...

..or at home?

What about your, um, parents?

Mum and Dad...

They don't sign?

No talking.

St Jude's...

You loved it.

And here...

I feel alone.

BELL RINGS

Oh...

Your lucky day, Dwayne.

Where was it? Parked up behind
the hedge in the park.

Thank you so much. Seriously.

I'm just doing me job.

I'm pleased for you, mate.

You all right?

I reckon you owe us an apology.

Yeah.

Do you know? I would,

but it is funny how
there's no light on it, isn't it?

Billy boy.

With me.

Now.

Set that up, did you? No.

You were meant to leave it
in the alleyway. I did.

I don't know what happened.
This is down to you, anyway.

You owe me.

You're going to earn it back
in bikes.

Towpath after school tonight,
all right?

No...

HE GASPS

You do as you are told.

You can pick those up, an' all.

Come on, Boz.

Turning up in the wrong school
uniform, destroying equipment,

running out of school, climbing
the fence, putting yourself at risk

and forcing senior members of staff
out of lessons.

Heck of a first day, son.

Look, Luca had
trouble following lessons,

because his CSW was a Level 1.

Well, that's not justification,
is it?

I want a full explanation, Coral.

Mm-hm. And I'm trying to explain.

I want to speak for myself.
Of course, Luca.

I know I shouldn't have
done these things.

But I'm sitting in the class
and I'm trying to lip-read,

and I just can't understand what's
being said and it's so frustrating.

Could you do that?
Sit there in silence?

Be amongst a crowd
yet feel so lonely?

My old school was perfect.

Everyone signed, all my friends were
there, we were deaf together.

And I felt we were the same,
but here I just feel different.

And I'm sorry,
but we're not your last school.

I know that.

I'm trying to fit in,

but I just feel so isolated.

People think I'm quiet,
but I'm not!

I love talking.

I love learning.

I just need to communicate.

To be able to be myself.

That's what I want.

Thank you, Luca.

Could you just wait outside,
just for one minute?

Look, I understand all of that.

But his behaviour...
What about ours?

I'm sorry? We need to wake up.

We need to listen to what he's
telling us.

He was completely lost because we
didn't give him the right support

on his first day.

We thought we'd ticked all these
boxes but we didn't make sure.

We failed him today.

I failed him. But if Gill would have
turned up, then...

We can't depend on someone else.

We have to take responsibility
together, as a team.

He makes a compelling argument.

But what's the solution? We just
let him off scot-free?

We might as well write him off
if we punish him.

You got this.

HE TAPS ON PHONE

LINE RINGS

VOICEMAIL: Hi, this is Anya Savage.

Leave a message and I'll call you
back. Probably! Bye!

BEEP

I'm sorry, Mum.

HE SNIFFLES

I'm so sorry.

TOILET FLUSHES

I know Schuey can be
out of order sometimes,

but he'll move on eventually.

What, you think?

You're supposed to be
the smartarse.

Stop making it so easy for him.

If you leave now,
where will you go?

I don't know.

I've got no friends here anyway.

Oi! You've got one friend. Me.

Friends.

So, uh, teach me some signs, then.

It might be my only chance.

Which ones?

Do you know the swear words?

Only...all of them.

What did they say, miss?

Am I going to get kicked out? No.

You're not getting kicked out!

You can forget today,
that's what we'll do,

and we'll start again tomorrow.

We won't be perfect, mind.

We'll never give you
what St Jude's gave you.

But I promise we will be better

and we will keep getting better

if you give us...another chance.

Go on, Luca.

I'll stay.

I'm really pleased, Luca.

Me too.

Schuey, what's going on with Billy?
Stop acting like you care what I do.

Of course I care, I'm your sister.

Remembered that, have you?

Look, come round tonight,
meet my foster family.

They're really nice,
they'd like to meet you.

And I'd like to see you as well.
I miss you.

Don't know why.

I'm busy.

I mean, the signs just came
flying out of you.

You know, you're like a ninja.

Where did you learn to...?

Someone I knew once.

Oh.

I might just look 'em up.

Jared!

How was your first day?

You're learning quick, miss!
Yeah, it's, um...

It's cool here.

Brilliant. And is Libby
a good buddy?

The best.

Well done, Libby. Thanks, miss.

Hey, and well done, you,
for putting them two together.

Well, might just be
the making of her.

HE SPEAKS SOFTLY

Um...

Do me a favour
and don't mention this to Neil. No.

No.

That's it, lad. Go on, crack it.
Right, yeah, I've got it.

I've got it. Aw, beautiful.

Beautiful.

Oi! What's this?
What do you think you're doing?

Said don't mess.

What, so you do this?

WE didn't do anything, did we?

No. Yous taking the mick?

What are you going to do,
have a heart attack? Throw up?

Either of you two mess with me
again and I'll k*ll you.

Oh, come on.

Schuey?

Schuey?

Boz.

Boz.

Boz, it's me.

Come on, wake up.

Boz...

I'm sorry.

So, this new cat,
do you like the name Felix?

No!

No way.

PHONE RINGS

Billy?

Dad. Dad, you've got to help me,
please.

What's up, mate? What's wrong?

I don't know...
I don't know what to do.

OK. You've got to come.

OK. Calm down, calm down.
Just tell me where you are.

Uh... OK. Don't worry,

whatever it is, whatever it is,
we can sort.

OK?

Billy!

Hey, Billy!

Billy!

Wait there.

Oh, Billy.

Billy, are you OK?

God! Are you OK?

You all right? What's going on?
It was an accident.

What? Has someone hurt you?

I swear, if anyone's
laid their hands on you...

No, I just... I just wanted them
to leave me alone.

Who? Who?
What you talking about, mate?

Oh, my God.

Call an ambulance.

Hey, son! Boz, it's Mr Savage.

Can you hear me, son?

He's not breathing!
How long has he been like this?

Since I called you.

That's nearly 20 minutes ago!

He's dead, isn't he?

HE SOBS

Son, what...?

What... What the hell happened?

I told you, it was an accident.

Oh, so he just came off
his bike?

Tell me! You said I needed to stand
up for myself.

You did...you did this?

You said I needed to fight back.

Yeah, but, son, I...

I... I didn't mean...

I know it was a mistake.

A mistake?

Billy, he's dead! I know. I'm
sorry, I've ruined everything.

Mum would be so disappointed
with me.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry,
I've k*lled someone.

I've k*lled someone...
No, it's going to be OK.

It's going to be OK. I've k*lled
someone. No, no.

I've k*lled someone. No. No. No.
You haven't.

Because it was an accident.
That's what you just said, OK?

It was an accident.

So we're going to ring the police,

and we're just going to tell 'em
what happened,

explain what happened.
What if they don't believe me?

I'll go to prison. I'll make sure
that doesn't happen, won't I?

You can't stop them, Dad.
The police, the courts -

you're not in charge of them.

There's nothing you can do.

Everything's done. That's it.

BILLY GASPS

Did anyone see you come down here?

No.

And did you tell anybody?

Schuey's supposed to be
coming later.

But not yet?

OK.

What about the body?
Have you touched the body?

Yeah, I tried...I tried to help him.

And I tried to save him. Yeah.

Of course.

Get in the car.

What are you going to do?
Get your stuff and get in the car.

Now!

SPLASH

Let's go home, eh?

# Oh, I like it down here

# Below ground

# I can stow away till winter
warms up again

# Oh, I like it down here

# Below ground. #
