NARRATOR: On this episode
of Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks...
NICK GOWITZKA: See this, Reed?
[Nick laughing]
NARRATOR: ...as Southern rivals
battle to dominate...
GREG MAYER: Oh, there he is, there he is!
REED MEREDITH: I pray to God
we get this fish.
NARRATOR: ...a Northern boat
fights for survival.
DAVE MARCIANO: If we don't
get a fish today,
the Hard Merch is gonna
head back to Gloucester.
NARRATOR: In a highly regulated fishery
that's trying to stay sustainable...
[laughter]
MARCIANO: Here we go.
NARRATOR: ...every bluefin caught
takes a bite out of the quota...
REED: Tighten her down.
NARRATOR: ...and every fisherman
has to battle
for his fair share.
This is Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks.
JAY MUENZNER: Dave. We got company!
MARCIANO [off screen]: Let me see.
Wait a minute.
-JAY: Out there.
-MARCIANO [off screen]: Let me see.
JAY: Right over there, Dave.
REED: So you Yankees think
you can just come down here
and invade our little quota?
MARCIANO: If we could have
caught more up there,
I'd have no desire to be down here.
We didn't have the best season back home,
but I've got a family to feed
and bills to pay.
So Jay and I made this 550-mile trek
to the Outer Banks,
'cause we heard this
is where the bite is on.
REED: Don't think you're going
to take any food off my plate.
MARCIANO: We need a few fish, too,
so we're going to have to do
what we got to do.
REED: I'm really not happy with the fact
that these Yankee boats are down here,
trying to take away
from our little 23-ton quota.
This isn't a game for us.
This is our livelihood.
We'll do what whatever we have to do
to keep them out of our circle,
the perimeter around any area
where we locate fish.
The only hard merchandise
you're gonna catch out here
is going to be an eight-foot wave
breaking right on the bow
of that rust bucket.
Stay out of the Wahoo's circle.
MARCIANO: Must be a small circle.
[bleep]
If this is Southern hospitality,
it ain't all that it's cracked up to be.
Just get a sprinkle going.
JAY: I just put a little bit
in the water.
MARCIANO [off screen]: Yeah, yeah.
We made a huge financial gamble
just bringing the boat down here.
The bills are piling up,
and so far, we haven't caught a thing.
If we don't catch a tuna
in the next 48 hours,
I have no choice
but to head home to Gloucester.
JAY [off screen]:
It should be bent by now.
MARCIANO: Here in the Outer Banks,
the boats are constantly on the move,
and they troll lines.
But I'm still not comfortable
with that greenstick
that everybody down here
says you got to use.
Apparently, we haven't been able
to figure it out yet.
So we're sitting here at anchor,
chumming and using a rod,
just like back home.
JAY: Stupid tuna.
[beeping]
MARCIANO [off screen]:
There's a mark, Jay.
There they are, Jay.
-JAY [off screen]: Where? How far?
-MARCIANO [off screen]: 20.
Chum's disappearing,
we're starting to get one or two feeding.
[reel slowly unspooling]
JAY: We're on! We're on! We're on!
MARCIANO [off screen]: Yeah, there we go.
JAY: We're on. We're on a fish.
MARCIANO: Bobber down,
bobber down on the chunks.
JAY: We're on a fish, Dave.
-MARCIANO [off screen]: There we go.
-JAY: Yeah!
MARCIANO [off screen]: Just let him
go down, Jay, just gonna go down.
JAY: Let's go. It's a nice screamer.
-MARCIANO: Yep.
-JAY: A screamer!
MARCIANO: Come on, Jay.
This fish here's got to be worth
at least six grand.
Sunset tuna bite.
Old school on the chunks.
I'll switch with you, Jay.
Get my gloves on.
The harpoon's ready, tail strap ready.
Standard operating procedure, Jay.
We got one on the line.
We did it old-school style.
Got him up in the chum.
Ah! Gone.
-JAY [off screen]: He's gone?
-MARCIANO: Yeah.
[bleep]
Pulled the hook.
[bleep, bleep]
JAY: Sucks.
MARCIANO: All right,
we're gonna wrap this up.
Well, and just like that, it's over.
Welcome to the game of tuna fishing.
This isn't good.
I'm starting to run out
of money, time and patience.
I need to master that greenstick,
and that needs to happen before
Jay and I waste another day
out here on the water.
JAY: Just like that, pulled the hook.
NARRATOR: At the start of day five,
20% of the quota is already filled.
Southern boat Fishin' Frenzy
is in the lead.
And Northern boat Hard Merchandise
has yet to catch.
-[phone ringing]
-TJ OTT: Marciano.
Hey, what's up?
MARCIANO [over radio]: You think you can
help me out a little,
rigging up this greenstick?
TJ [over phone]: All right, all right.
Give me a couple of minutes. I'll come by.
I'll help you with whatever
you need, all right?
MARCIANO: All right. Thanks a lot, man.
TJ: You got it.
MARCIANO: My closest ally down here
is gonna be TJ on the Hot Tuna.
We steamed down here together.
And he's got a lot of experience
fishing with a greenstick.
TJ: What's up? How you doing?
MARCIANO: Now we got to get
to the fishing stage of the game.
TJ: I have a lot of respect for Dave.
I mean, I got to know Dave a lot
more fishing up north this year.
He provides for his family
through fishing,
and I'm here to help him.
All right, you get a good mark...
-MARCIANO: Yeah?
-JAY: Yeah?
TJ: ...you want to come out
and grab this line and jig it.
If you see a fish come up and hit it,
if you don't let go,
that snap will come down
and break your hand.
TIM OTT [off screen]:
Yeah. It's pretty violent.
It's a violent, it's a violent bite.
Yeah, you could lose fingers.
TJ: You know, this could decapitate you.
MARCIANO: I better get a box of Band-A*DS.
JAY: Yeah.
What TJ told us about
the greenstick is eye-opening.
If you don't use the greenstick
the right way,
it won't fish right,
and plus, you'll probably
get hurt doing it.
MARCIANO: The ball, I want to put
a clip on, so I can clip it on to the...
TJ: Yes.
MARCIANO: How far should the ball be
from the back of the bird?
TJ: 10, 12 feet.
MARCIANO: 10 to 12 feet. So that long?
I can't thank you enough,
you know, I'll tell you.
We get some fish,
we'll take you guys out to dinner.
TJ: It's crucial that Dave and Jay
know how this greenstick works.
They can't be afraid of it.
It's their friend, not their foe.
Once they get the hang of it,
it's gonna really be the weapon they need
to have a successful season
here in the Outer Banks.
-MARCIANO: We'll see you.
-TJ: See you guys, later.
TIM: Good luck!
JAY: All right.
Well, that was cool.
MARCIANO: Yup.
GREG MAYER [off screen]: All right, Nick.
Let's get out there and get them today.
NICK [off screen]: Yeah, man. Ready.
[screaming]
Frenzy, baby. Yeah!
GREG: Nick is fired up.
He's out there, hooting and hollering.
I know he's doing it to make
sure the fish can hear him.
And I don't think they like it.
NICK: We're on the Frenzy!
We're on the Frenzy, man.
This ain't the Wahoo. The Frenzy!
GREG: Reed on the Wahoo,
he's my toughest competition.
He and I are neck and neck.
Both of us, we got two fish
so far this season.
We got a friendly wager riding
on the most fish this year.
Make it a grand.
REED [over radio]:
Let's make it five grand.
GREG: Five? You're on.
NICK [off screen]: Go big or go home.
Love it.
Jacked up.
-GREG: Let's go.
-NICK [off screen]: Let's do it, brother.
GREG: You'll check out the leaderboard
at the end of this season,
and I guaran-damn-tee you
that the Fishin' Frenzy is gonna be
on top of the leaderboard,
ahead of that Wahoo.
REED: Bluefin season,
it's always been a bloodbath around here.
Now we've got these Northern boats
competing with us,
the pressure is really on.
My brother Banks and I,
we need to hit it,
we need to hit it hard today.
Let's get this show on the road.
BANKS MEREDITH: What's the deal today?
REED: I got a little inside info.
I'm gonna cruise up to check it out.
BANKS: Right now, we're neck and neck
with the Fishin' Frenzy.
Each of us have two fish apiece.
REED: Those guys are
both total egomaniacs.
My goal is just to bring them
down a notch or two.
We're getting a little late start today.
We're gonna head southeast
down to The Point,
see if the fish are down there.
BANKS: It's just a matter of time
before we kick Frenzy's a*s.
MARCIANO [off screen]: We're gonna start
rigging some rigs and catching fish here.
JAY [off screen]: All right.
This is our hydraulic bandit.
We're almost ready.
MARCIANO: And I hope having TJ
help me out a little
is gonna make all the difference
in the world.
I finally got that greenstick
set up and ready to go.
Okay, Jay, toss the ball over.
JAY [off screen]: Watch your feet.
MARCIANO: All right, have
your number one squid ready, Jay.
JAY: Okay.
MARCIANO: We got to drag
some squids around,
make them look like live squids
with this greenstick thing.
JAY [off screen]: It's a lot of line
we're gonna have out.
-MARCIANO: Yup.
-JAY [off screen]: All you.
MARCIANO: And that, supposedly,
is what drives these fish wild.
Of course, it's crucial that we hook up
to something real soon here.
If we don't catch on to this
by the end of the day tomorrow,
we're out of here.
-JAY [off screen]: She's fishing.
-MARCIANO [off screen]: Yup.
GREG: Here comes the Wahoo.
NICK: The Wahoo!
GREG: As I was working around
in here, I saw Reed,
you know, coming right in
on where we were fishing.
NICK: [bleep] the Wahoo.
GREG: How about it, Wahoo,
you standing by?
REED: Yeah, go ahead.
GREG: Oh, we got-- Look behind me.
Marciano's on his way in here.
He must have heard something.
REED: Yeah, he's sneaking
right in off my bow.
That Marciano guy clearly
didn't understand our message yesterday.
I think it's time to give him
the rebel yell.
How about you, Hard Merchandise?
MARCIANO: Standing by.
REED [over radio]: So what happened
up there this summer?
I mean, you guys had like six months
of pretty weather to fish,
and you couldn't get it done
in that amount of time?
You got to come all the way down here
and pick on our little 23-ton quota?
NICK: Old Reed trying to talk tough,
and he's trying to sound tough.
He ain't nothing.
He's nobody. Who's he?
MARCIANO: When I'd seen you
a little earlier,
I swear we were trying
to read the name of that boat.
What's it? The Yahoo or something?
NICK: Hard Merchandise, you there, Dave?
MARCIANO: Who's this?
NICK: Fishin' Frenzy.
MARCIANO: Oh, yeah, I got you.
NICK: You had it right.
Didn't you say it was the Yahoo?
That's what I call him, too.
MARCIANO: Yeah.
REED: Think Greg lost control
of his ship again.
Got his little kindergarten mate
grabbing the mic from him.
NICK: I'm just letting him know
what a prick you are.
And we're Southern gentlemen over here.
REED: Well, your captain's
from New Jersey,
so I don't know how much of
a Southern gentleman he is.
You? You're just a redneck.
GREG: Since I'm from New Jersey,
I guess I'm technically a Yankee.
But I've been living down here
long enough,
I'm as Southern as all these other boats.
Reed's always got to be
complaining about something.
REED: I'm not too worried
about that red boat.
We'll get ours.
MARCIANO: I'm just gonna let you
two guys sort this all out.
We're gonna start catching some fish here.
REED [over radio]: All right, so,
you know, just so we're clear around here,
you're gonna have to take
a good step back,
'cause we're in the front of the pack.
GREG: Usually second.
That's the difference between Reed and me.
The added competition
makes me fish harder.
All it does for Reed,
it makes him complain harder.
He's not gonna catch much
if he keeps focusing
on these Northern guys.
[laughs]
Here we go.
[beeping]
NICK [off screen]: Porpoise-sized.
Look at that mark.
We're under that bird, that ripply spot.
GREG [off screen]: Yep.
NICK: I thought I saw a splash over there.
GREG [off screen]: It could be a fish.
It's big enough.
GREG:
Put a bait out.
Get that left rigger out first.
Today we're fishing a pair of outriggers.
They're long, aluminum poles.
There's one on each side,
connected to rod and reels.
My two baits are probably 50 foot apart.
You can get a spread.
Good way to get a bite.
NICK: There he is!
GREG: Oh, there he is, there he is!
We've got him on right flat.
NICK: That's what we're talking about.
GREG: We got him on.
Okay, let's go to work.
NICK: Yeah!
NICK: There he is!
GREG: Oh, there he is, there he is!
We got him on.
Okay, let's go to work.
NICK [off screen]: Yeah!
GREG [off screen]:
That's what we're talking about.
NICK: I bet the Wahoo
just come right there.
He hasn't even set out this morning.
We already got one on.
GREG [off screen]:
That's what you get for sleeping in.
REED: Look. He is hooked up.
BANKS [off screen]:
You got to be kidding me.
GREG [off screen]: This is the one
we need, right here.
I mean, this is gonna definitely
put us ahead,
and it's even better that Reed
is right here watching us.
NICK: Yeah! Come on, fish!
See this, Reed?
[Nick laughing]
How do you like me now, boys?
Yeah, baby, there he goes!
Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
GREG: He's pulled the corner
of the boat around.
Nice fish.
NICK: Gonna be
a $10,000 fish right here.
GREG: I think Reed
is flipping out right now.
REED: Damn it.
BANKS: Fishin' Frenzy's
down and tight right now.
REED: If at the end of the season,
the Frenzy catches more fish than we do,
I'm gonna be pretty pissed about it.
GREG: All right, see if you can
get a little line on it here, Nick.
NICK: All right, Cap.
Getting lots of line now.
GREG: Oh, look at him up on top.
Look at him, look at him!
NICK: Yeah, baby!
Go ahead, Cap! Ahead, ahead, ahead, ahead!
There you go.
He's right under us, Greg!
Get your a*s over here and stick him!
There he is, right there!
Right there, Greg!
Woo! Yeah, baby!
GREG: Get the gaff.
Off the tail rope.
NICK: Right here beside me,
right side of me, Cap.
GREG: Okay, he's ours. He's ours.
NICK: Yeah, baby! Woo!
Way to start the day, Cap.
Pretty work. Yeah, baby!
How do you like that, Wahoo?
REED: He got one.
GREG [over radio]: How about it, Wahoo?
We got one more.
REED [over radio]: Pulled him right out
from under me.
Just like the carpet.
-GREG: Ready?
-NICK: Yeah.
GREG: One, two, three. Pull.
Look at that, 88-incher.
-NICK [off screen]: Yeah, man!
-GREG: Just right.
NICK: Perfect.
-GREG: That size don't get no bigger.
-NICK: Nope.
GREG: Stoked!
Frickin' stoked!
Let's go get another one.
PAUL: Look at that thing!
[laughs]
TYLER: Hey, Dave on
the Hard Merch in front of us,
I'm gonna go check out his rig.
I want to see how TJ rigged it
up for him, you know?
You know, I want to make sure
his baits are fishing right.
I heard TJ helped Marciano
with rigging up his greenstick.
And I thought that was whack.
And I'm not too confident
in the way that TJ helps out
other people fishing.
So I don't trust TJ
as far as I can throw him.
I see something.
He should have a hard ball
instead of that dog on his bird.
How about you, Hard Merch, pick me up?
MARCIANO: Yeah, go ahead. What's going on?
TYLER: Wanted to maybe check that rig out
that TJ did up for you.
You definitely want to switch
that dog up on the back end,
and try to get one
of those hard ba*ls in there.
Definitely tighten it up a lot better.
PAUL: He needs more tension
on the back end.
TYLER: If there's no tension on the line,
the baits won't jig,
and the jigging is what attracts
these bluefins,
because they think it's a school of fish.
So Marciano definitely needs to fix that.
You know, I'm glad, you know,
you got the rig all set up
and everything like that,
but definitely like
to just double check it,
make sure there's no sabotage
involved, you know.
MARCIANO [over radio]: Sure, yeah,
I appreciate that.
TYLER: Yeah, absolutely.
Sounds good, buddy. Good luck.
MARCIANO [on radio]: All right.
You, too, man. Good luck.
TJ: Why would I sabotage Dave?
Why would I not rig his stuff properly?
"I'll help you, Dave!
I'll fix your greenstick, ha ha!"
You know, the kid has screwed me
time after time over the years.
Back in Gloucester,
Tyler stole my numbers.
He's just a compulsive liar.
You know, I don't really want
anything to do with him.
Have fun lying.
Have fun running your mouth.
Call us if you're sinking.
That's about as much help
as you'll get from us.
GREG: There they are!
Right off the bow, watch.
Oh, man, they're going off.
We barely recovered from that first catch,
and now I see tunas breaching the surface.
I think this is our lucky day.
Wow, they're big boys, too!
NICK: We're gonna get him here, Cap.
GREG [off screen]: There we go!
Hook up! We got him on!
NICK [off screen]: Yeah, baby.
GREG [off screen]: There we go.
GREG:
Oh! Another long 'rigger bite!
NICK: Yeah! One on each 'rigger, baby!
Doubleheader!
GREG: We're legally allowed
to keep two bluefin a day.
We've already got one on deck.
With this doubleheader,
we're gonna try and catch the first one,
make sure he's big enough,
and cut the other one loose.
Damn, Nick!
Two bites right out of the gate!
Doubleheader.
REED: Oh, Greg got them.
Greg's already one fish ahead of us.
If he catches again,
we'll be that much further behind.
NICK: Oh, hoo-hoo-hoo!
We had two bites.
Right long and the left long,
and we're on.
GREG: You get two fish on
at the same time.
If those two lines come together,
we could very easily chafe
these fish off and lose them.
You need to get everything
out of the water
as quickly as possible.
NICK: We need this one bad, bud.
GREG: You good?
NICK: I didn't get
that long 'rigger in yet.
Uh-oh, Greg, them fish
is swimming towards each other.
NICK [off screen]: Oh, hoo-hoo-hoo!
We had two bites.
Right long and the left long,
and we're on.
We are on.
GREG: Here we go! Uh! In the meat, baby!
NICK: We need this one bad, bud.
GREG: We've got two fish on,
and they're swimming towards each other.
If the lines cross, they could break,
and we'd lose both of our fish.
That's 10 grand out the window.
Are you good?
NICK: I didn't get
that long 'rigger in yet.
GREG: If we get one
of these fish on board,
that puts us two ahead of the Wahoo!
Frenzy!
Ow!
Rudder's straight.
Bluefish up on top.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
[bleep]
We lost it.
We just had two long 'rigger bites.
The first one pulled off.
I mean, it didn't even mess up the bait.
And the second one,
Nick's got him on over there.
So we're gonna go to work.
We've got one on deck,
and we can get the one on the line.
So we need to focus on that.
Tail rope and everything ready to roll.
[laughs]
NICK: There you go. Crank on him now.
Show 'em how it's done, Cap!
GREG: He's got a lot of line,
so he really has not felt the drag.
He's getting ready to feel it here.
There we go. He's feeling it now.
REED: I can't get a bite.
Oh, my God.
[Nick laughs]
GREG: Wah! "I can't get a bite!
Wah! I got one on, I lost him! Wah!"
NICK: Yeah, some days, it's your day.
Some days, it ain't.
REED: Any minute.
That same herd of tuna
is popping off the Wahoo.
It just kills me
that they're not biting my lines.
GREG: Hey, Nick. This fish is coming up.
That looks great.
He's coming up just like we want him.
NICK: Coming up. Steady, steady, steady.
GREG:
We'll get a shot at him.
Oh, here we go.
We'll get him right here.
NICK: Here he comes, here he comes!
GREG: God damn it!
-GREG: I got him.
-NICK: Get your gaff.
-GREG: I got him right here.
-NICK: Yeah.
-GREG: [bleep] butterball.
-NICK: Oh!
GREG: Tail rope.
He's ours.
-He is ours!
-NICK: Yeah!
-GREG: Yes!
-NICK: Yeah!
GREG: Now we got a commanding lead!
One more fish up on the Wahoo.
One, two.
-NICK: Yeah, baby!
-GREG: Yeah, baby!
-NICK: Fat!
-GREG: Nice butterball.
NICK: 80-incher. Look at that!
GREG: This is the fish
that definitely puts us on top!
NICK: Yeah!
GREG [over radio]: Hey, Reed.
We got two fish ahead of you now.
Good luck to you catching up.
BANKS: That was terrible!
NICK: Frenzy strikes again!
TYLER: Yo, Paulie, I want to try
and work on my Southern accent.
PAUL: Yep!
TYLER: Start trying to talk
to these Southern boys on the radio.
[Paul laughs]
PAUL [imitating Southern accent]: Y'all!
TYLER: Hey there, Wahoo.
TYLER [on radio]:
Southern boat here.
REED: I recognize that voice.
And I know exactly who it belongs to.
His accent is about as Southern
as the Empire State Building.
TYLER: Y'all got the tunas on
or what, homie?
Fellow Southern boat.
I'm just one of your buddies.
REED: So far, I've had to tangle
with the Hard Merchandise,
and now this jackleg.
TYLER: Are you seeing any tunas?
REED [over radio]: No.
TYLER:
Oh, man!
[Paul laughs]
PAUL: They say we have the accent.
They got the accent!
[imitates Southern accent]
Y'all coming fishing?
[laughing]
TYLER [on radio]: I just want you
to put me on a big one.
I just wanna bend the pole.
I want the big stick to go pow.
REED: If we were fishing
for obnoxious Yankees,
we'd be doing just fine.
But we're not.
We need some bluefins.
[Tyler and Paul laughing]
LUCAS: Another good day
for the Frenzy, huh?
GREG: Yeah, we got a couple today.
LUCAS: Nice. Let's see what you got.
Wow.
Let's see what
the dressed weight is here, guys.
NICK: Oh, h*!
LUCAS: 233 pounds dressed.
-GREG: All right, we'll take it.
-NICK: Sounds good.
-GREG: Way to go.
-NICK: Yeah, man.
LUCAS: All right, let's see
how this one looks.
Oh, butterball.
GREG: Cool.
-LUCAS: Let's see how the quality is.
-GREG: Let's check it out.
The buyers are looking
for the quality in the meat.
They judge that from the color
of the meat and the fat content.
LUCAS: Let's see what the core looks like.
GREG [off screen]: The core's clear.
LUCAS: Yep. No fat, no oil.
NICK: How much you think?
LUCAS: The shape's kind of weak.
-I'd say 10 bucks a pound.
-NICK: $10?
GREG: Well...
They can't all be diamonds.
233 pounds dressed,
$10 a pound, 2300 bucks.
I'd like it to be better,
but we'll take it.
Now for the second one.
LUCAS: Let's check it out.
GREG: We need this fish to be big money.
-NICK: Not bad.
-GREG: A good, clear core.
LUCAS: You got a decent amount of fat.
Better fish than most I've seen today.
GREG: Per pound, what do you think about?
LUCAS: I would say $16 a pound.
-GREG: 16!
-NICK: 16! Yeah, baby. We'll take that.
-GREG: That was worth the steam.
-NICK: Yeah, buddy.
GREG: We came in with two fish today.
481 pounds dressed weight.
That's over six grand for the day.
That's six grand the Wahoo ain't getting.
-NICK: See you tomorrow.
-LUCAS: See you tomorrow.
GREG: I'm stoked for that.
We're really looking good right now.
NICK: Man, I'm jacked up.
MARCIANO [off screen]:
Looks like everybody else split.
A couple of the guys today,
some of them Southern boys had fish.
And we're going to camp out for the night
and be ready to go first thing
in the morning,
plus we're going to fish all night
and see if we can get lucky.
It's been five days of fishing,
and we haven't caught a thing.
We're hoping tonight changes our luck,
because, financially,
we can only last one more day
before we have to turn around
and head back home.
JAY: We're desperate for a bluefin tuna.
Dave's definitely getting
more frustrated than ever.
[beeping]
MARCIANO: There's a fish again,
but it's dark out.
Some guys say these rigs
don't work at night,
but at least now we're marking fish again.
There's some more, Jay!
There's another bunch up high!
Maybe we'll get lucky at night here.
Jay, let's change things up.
We'll go back to old school,
and we'll throw some baits out.
-JAY: Rig 'em proper?
-MARCIANO: Yep, yep.
JAY: Hide it.
MARCIANO: We're going
to maximize our chance of catching
by putting more lines in the water.
We're gonna greenstick,
we're gonna use rods.
We're gonna throw
every line we have off this boat.
[beeping]
What did you get, Jay?
[reel unspooling]
JAY: Oh, here we go! We're on!
MARCIANO: We need this fish.
MARCIANO: What did you get, Jay?
[beeping]
JAY: Oh, here we go! We're on!
MARCIANO: We need this fish.
JAY: Good fish.
MARCIANO: I was just gonna say,
something's coming up good.
JAY: Reel, Dave, reel! Reel, reel!
JAY: I'll spell you.
MARCIANO: Yeah, all right,
just take it easy with him.
JAY: Kick the boat a little.
He's going under the boat.
MARCIANO: I'm gonna go bump it up
a few RPMs.
JAY: Okay, Dave.
MARCIANO: We don't want
that line chafing against the hull
and breaking.
We need this fish.
JAY: Feels like a nice fish.
Giving us a good fight.
MARCIANO [off screen]:
I just hope we can keep it.
All right, here. I got you.
Here's our leader.
Ah, it's a [bleep] hammerhead.
JAY: Ah, peckerhead.
MARCIANO [off screen]:
T-heads. We got T-heads.
JAY: We really need
a bluefin tuna right now,
but all we catch is a stupid hammerhead.
MARCIANO: That's definitely not the fish
I'm pulling an all-nighter to catch.
I'm beginning to think
coming down here was a huge mistake.
JAY [off screen]: It sucks.
MARCIANO [off screen]: Same as back home.
TJ: Hey, Reba. Hey, good girl.
It's been six days,
we only caught one fish.
I thought we'd be doing way better,
but right now that's not the case.
It's taken a lot to get down here.
The expenses are almost double
what they normally would be.
So, if we don't catch fish,
it's going to be a failure.
And I see local boy running
right towards the direction I'm going.
He knows something.
I'm thinking, we might be
hitting up some fish this way.
In the past,
when I fished the Outer Banks,
I've caught a lot in this spot.
Here we go! We're on!
[Reba barking]
Jarrett, got to reel in that rod, now!
Those lines can't get tangled.
We're on, we're on, we're on!
[laughing]
[bleep]
Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
Look at that line go.
This one's a monster!
It's a big one. It's a big one, baby!
This could be a $10,000 fish
that could put us back in the game.
Jarrett, come here!
Put your hands on this.
Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo! Woo!
So, yeah, reel easy.
Don't stop, don't stop.
Don't stop.
Line going out, baby.
JARRETT PRZYBYSZEWSKI:
Can you turn the hydraulics on?
TJ: Huh?
JARRETT: He's stopped running.
Are the hydraulics on?
TJ [off screen]: Ah, damn,
there's no more tension on the line.
Is he gone?
TJ:
I hope he's not gone.
[bleep] that was a big fish.
That was definitely a big fish to dump it.
And he was smoking, then he stopped,
which leaves me to think
we had some kind of terminal error there,
tackle error.
He's gone bro, [bleep].
God damn it! What broke?
I'm leaning towards something broke.
[bleep]
Yep.
There's your culprit, right there.
Crotch broke.
Now we're just coming back with nothing.
God damn it.
Damn it!
Our line was right through
that clip right there.
It's gone. He crotch broke it.
I mean, that was 600-pound mono
for him to break that.
So you know it was no 80-inch fish.
It was definitely a 100-inch fish.
And it sucks right now. We're bumming.
[beeping]
REED: Marking 'em right here.
We're marking!
BANKS: Greg has two fish.
Pretty bummed about that.
But all we can do is stick
to our g*ns and keep on trucking.
REED: Pretty good chance
of catching a fish here, man.
Still biting.
There it is, we're on! We're on!
BANKS [off screen]: Get the hydros on,
get the hydros on.
-REED [off screen]: He's taking line?
-BANKS: Yep! Taking line.
REED: Let's go! Come on!
[beeping]
REED [off screen]: We're marking!
There he is, we're on! We're on!
-BANKS: Taking line.
-REED: Let's go! Come on!
All right, get your rods in,
and I'm going to keep going around.
BANKS: Get the hydros on,
get the hydros on!
REED: They're on.
All right, we got to come around.
JAY: Dave, something's going on
over there. Is that boat hooked up?
MARCIANO: Hang on.
Looks like the Wahoo there,
that Reed on the Wahoo.
JAY [off screen]: Aw, man!
REED: He's going nuts, man.
He's fighting hard.
Big time, line going out, LGO.
We are getting dumped.
JAY: He's backing down hard!
Look at him go.
MARCIANO: Must be a screamer, wow.
When you don't catch fish,
you wonder if you're doing
something wrong.
And you wonder
if it's ever going to change,
or if the tuna gods
are sending you a message.
REED [off screen]: I pray to God
we get this fish.
I'd love to get him.
Banks, turn the wheel to the left.
Right, keeping coming around left,
hard left.
Just leave it hard over.
Left. Left.
Go, go. Dude, you're not even turning.
Go hard over till it stops.
Turn the wheel left till it stops.
BANKS: That's it, I'm backed off
frickin' one...
REED: Don't back off at all!
That one turn off is going right.
Just leave it hard over.
BANKS: On a boat,
the captain's always in charge.
REED: [bleep] What's wrong
with this [bleep]?
Just keep her in gear.
To the port. Keep her in gear.
BANKS: But deep down,
he knows I'm the older brother.
REED [off screen]:
Seriously. Like now.
BANKS: And I think he knows
I'll beat his a*s.
REED: Nice and easy.
Slow the boat down, leave it in gear.
BANKS: I get yelled at either way,
I mean, whatever the [bleep] I do.
REED: Yeh, yeh, yeh, yeh.
Here he is, just keep it straight.
It's not a shark.
Bump her ahead.
BANKS [off screen]:
'Cause I cannot see [bleep].
REED: All right, in and out now.
Oh, [bleep]
Got him!
-BANKS [off screen]: What do you need?
-REED: Let's go, tail rope.
BANKS [off screen]: Hold on, hold on.
REED: Let's get it on him.
Tighten her down.
BANKS: Oh, [bleep]!
Man, that about broke my wrist.
REED: Let go, let go.
BANKS: We got one.
Yes!
-That's what I'm talking about.
-REED: Yes.
I'll take 'em all day long.
BANKS: That's the way we do it.
MARCIANO [off screen]: Yeah, the Wahoo.
You on there, Reed? Come in.
REED: Yeah, we're standing by. Go ahead.
MARCIANO: What, did you guys
have an accident or something
and actually hook one?
REED: There's no accident
on this rig, Cap.
MARCIANO: I got to admit,
though, I'm impressed.
I was right beside you,
and you did make us look to shame.
MARCIANO [on radio]:
But good going, nonetheless.
REED: Marciano seems like
a really decent guy.
But when it comes to business,
you could be a saint sent
from Heaven for all I care.
I'll still do everything I can
to drive them out of my backyard.
Good luck, Cap.
MARCIANO: We're a stone's throw
from the Wahoo,
but that fish didn't bite my line.
I hate to admit it,
but these Southern boats
are mopping the floor with me.
It's downright embarrassing.
Stupid tuna.
If we don't get a fish today,
the Hard Merch is going to turn tail
and head back to Gloucester.
MARCIANO:
Stupid greensticks.
They don’t ******* work.
JAY: We're on! We're on!
We're on! We're on!
I heard something get
real tight, looked back,
this thing was basically
touching the water!
MARCIANO: Watch the rope, Jay!
Tie off your rope. Tie it!
JAY: I couldn’t scream fast enough.
MARCIANO [off screen]: Whoa!
That's a fish!
Rods! Rods!
Yeah, Jay, here we go.
First one on the [bleep] greenstick!
Let me know if I need
to bump it ahead, okay?
JAY: Yep.
I'm not sure what the weight is.
All I heard was a big bang!
Smash! Boom, bada-bing b*mb!
And then I look over,
and the reel just starts spinning
as fast as it can go.
MARCIANO: Stay focused now.
We just got to get him in the boat.
Nice and easy.
Straighten the wheel.
[beeping]
JAY [off screen]: He's at 24!
MARCIANO: Yep! Straighten the wheel, boy.
Keep turning.
Good job. Let's get this one.
Give him a little bump, Jay.
Jay, here's our second snap.
I see color, I see color!
Get the harpoon, Jay!
I'm going to pull him up to you
to get a nice head shot.
He's going to come right around at you.
Jay! Jay!
Oh, my God, Jay!
JAY: Goodness! It broke!
MARCIANO [off screen]: Come on!
MARCIANO [off screen]:
I see color, I see color!
Get the harpoon, Jay.
I'm going to pull him up to you
to get a nice head shot.
He's going to come right around at you.
Jay! Jay!
Oh, my God, Jay!
JAY: Goodness! It broke!
MARCIANO [off screen]: Come on!
Get another harpoon! [bleep]
You need to go to harpoon school, son.
JAY: Dude, I don't know what happened.
MARCIANO: You hit it sideways.
Now, come on, get him!
We've got to get the rope on him!
Sweet. Yep, there you go.
JAY: We're about to...
We're about to seal the deal!
We sealed the deal, Dave!
-MARCIANO: All right.
-JAY: Yes!
MARCIANO: Tie him off, Jay.
-JAY: Yeah, Dave!
-MARCIANO: Nice.
First fish in the Outer Banks.
First fish on the greenstick.
And he looks like a nice one,
I'll say he's a respectable 300 pounds.
JAY: Money!
MARCIANO: All right, beginner's luck.
That's what we call that.
JAY: Yeah, buddy.
Over the rail, in the pail...
MARCIANO: Okay. That's his good side.
JAY: Back to the dock to make the sale.
REED [on radio]:
How about you, Hard Merchandise?
Standing by, Dave?
MARCIANO: Yeah, go ahead.
REED: I guess you did watch
that video on how to greenstick.
MARCIANO: Just keep in mind,
I might not know much about greensticking,
but I do know a little bit
about k*lling tuna.
REED: Don't get too used to this.
We're not gonna let this happen every day.
MARCIANO: We'll just have to see
how this game goes.
See who can stay ahead of this pack.
It's either us or them.
JAY: What's going on, guys?
LUCAS: How's it going, Jay?
First fish, huh? Nice job. Outer Banks.
JAY: Yeah, we popped our cherry,
what can I say?
-Check out this fish!
-LUCAS: Real nice.
-JAY: Not bad, huh?
-LUCAS: Nice job, nice job.
JAY: Not bad for
a couple greenstick googans.
LUCAS: Yeah.
JAY [off screen]: What do you think
she's going to weigh?
-MARCIANO: 268.
-JAY: 268?
-LUCAS: 268 pounds.
-JAY: Not bad.
MARCIANO: You'd almost think I knew
what I was talking about, huh?
MARCIANO: What do you need a scale for?
LUCAS: Let's check it out.
MARCIANO: Let's hope this one pays off,
we need money big time.
All right, let's see
what it looks like here.
JAY: Show me the money.
Aw, rose color all the way through.
MARCIANO: Oh, that's
a pretty decent-looking core.
LUCAS: Real nice.
I mean, you got nice oil here,
just the right amount of fat,
the color's right on.
MARCIANO: What are we talking?
What are we talking dollars?
LUCAS: The market right now,
you're looking at...
I'd say 24 bucks a pound.
MARCIANO: Nice. Well done.
All right, cool.
-MARCIANO: Thanks a lot.
-LUCAS: Thanks, guys.
MARCIANO: All right, we'll see you guys.
LUCAS: Pleasure doing business with you.
MARCIANO: That's a little over six grand.
That covers all my expenses
for coming down here.
We just got to keep this momentum up,
and the next fish is going
to be pure profit.
-STEVE: Got another one.
-REED: Yeah, man.
STEVE [off screen]: Awesome.
Nice, marketable fish.
-174 pounds.
-REED: Sweet!
-BANKS: There you go.
-REED: Nice, little fish.
That's why he's got the fat.
You can tell the difference.
STEVE: Let's check the quality.
BANKS [off screen]: Fingers crossed.
REED [off screen]: Hopefully, he has
a little fat and decent color.
STEVE: It's actually a nice fish.
Nice red, you can see some marbling.
Yup.
All right, guys, let's see
what the core looks like.
BANKS: Moment of truth.
REED: Hopefully, pretty clear.
Looks good to me.
STEVE: No yaki, nice red core,
nice skin fat, nice penetrating
into the major lobes.
And the fat will really come out
when this chills down, too.
REED [off screen]: Yes, it will.
STEVE: Nice, attractive, small fish.
REED: He is, huh?
So what's it going to fetch, Steve?
STEVE: $20 a pound.
-REED: Nice. Take that.
-BANKS: We'll take it. Psyched.
REED: Our fish was 174 pounds
dressed weight.
$20 a pound, we got for that fish.
And that's almost 3500 bucks.
We just need one more fish
to catch up to the Frenzy.
That feels pretty good. We're pumped up.
STEVE: Excellent job.
Thank you for your business.
-REED: Thank you.
-STEVE: Thanks a lot. Nice job.
NARRATOR: At the end of day six,
Wahoo's catch pushes them
into second place,
and Hard Merchandise
is finally on the board.
And after weigh-ins across the fishery,
now almost a third of the quota is filled.
MARCIANO: I got to say,
I was ready to throw in
the towel down here.
But I got lots of support
from TJ and Tyler,
my fellow Northerners.
REED: Marciano just caught his first fish.
He's all pumped up.
We know he's not going anywhere.
But when it comes to business,
he's trying to take food
right off my plate.
I'll do whatever it takes
to send him back up north.
