- I met Jason in Hueco Tanks
on a bouldering trip

about 25 years ago

when we were both kind of
just getting our start.

- [laughs]

It was my first rock climbing trip ever.

[indistinct chatter]

Chris was already
one of the best climbers

in the world.

And I remember seeing Chris climb stuff

that just opens your mind.

And that just, like,
fueled me and inspired me.

That's when everything
just, like, opened up.

I just wanted to travel the world.

I wanted to see more.

So from, you know, kid in Iowa,

getting to go all over the world

and meet new people
and you have this community,

I love everything about it.
I love living in the dirt.

♪ ♪

It's so rooted in my soul, climbing,

that good or not at it,
doing it, it's, like,

the thing that I love the most.

- I think most people that go climbing,

it fundamentally changes them
on a deep level.

And it changes how they view the world,

changes how they view life.

I'm a firm believer that...

the more people that are climbing,

the better the world's gonna be.

♪ ♪

So Jason and I decided
to start a competition

to inspire the next generation
of climbers.

- Yeah, come on!
- Yeah, come on.

- Ten amateur climbers with the dream

of becoming professionals

will go head-to-head

on some of nature's most incredible rock.

[people cheering]

[dramatic music]

- Oh, my God.

- Yahoo!

- This is a competition.

And if you have the ability to win,

then you need to take it.

[people cheering]

- This is one of the most serious

climbs we've done on this entire trip.

- [yells]

- You know, your life
is in your own hands.

- [screams]
- Oh!

- For me, this is about,
how am I gonna manage

the fear of getting hurt?

- Oh, f*ck, f*ck, f*ck, f*ck, f*ck.

- You okay?
- You okay?

- f*ck!

- This is some bucket list
sh*t that I didn't know

was on my bucket list.
- [chuckles]

- Whoo!

[people cheering]

- To pull off a competition
of this scale,

we've enlisted champion climber

and Olympic commentator Meagan Martin.

- Having Meagan, I can't say
enough good things.

It's like, you know,
Superman and Wonder Woman.

- She looks so scared.

I'm so excited.

I had heard that this might be happening,

but I never thought that I'd get a chance

to be a part of it.

- One of them will win a $100,000 prize

and a $100,000 sponsorship

with my lifelong clothing sponsor, prAna.

- Deep water soloing,
climbing above the water,

is something very unique to Mallorca.

I've seen really, really good climbers

that come here and get totally paralyzed

by the fear of falling into the ocean.

- I think why this is gonna be
so special,

like, why it should start
the competition here

is because I don't think
that many people have done it.

Deep water soloing
isn't just, like, this is

in my backyard, and I feel like this is

such a... an amazing aesthetic
to kick it off here together.

Even if you're a great climber,
it's scary.

- Without a doubt, deep water soloing

is my favorite form of climbing.

We climb ropeless above the water.

If you fall, you fall into the ocean.

♪ ♪

- What's dangerous
is that anytime you fall

in the water, you have to make sure

you're entering into the water
in a safe way.

But honestly, it's...

for me, I've always thought

it was such a cool discipline.

- I think it's gonna blow their minds.

I think this will be the perfect spot

to, you know, start
this competition, right?

- Starting in a place
like Mallorca, it's incredible.

[laughs]
- Where it starts.

- Meagan.
- Mallorca.

- Mallorca.
- Mallorca.

- Morning, guys. Let's load up over here.

♪ ♪

[people cheering]

- Yeah.

- When I was in my early 20s,

I was the best woman climber in Scotland.

I want to, I suppose, prove to myself

that I've still got it
when it comes to competition.

- Whoo! Yeah.

Dude, look at those caves.

- Oh, man, it's so cool.

Getting close, getting close.

I've been trying to be
a professional climber

for a long time.

But my anxiety has impacted
my climbing a lot.

I had a reputation for qualifying,

like, first or second

and then getting last, like,
in the finals

nine times out of ten, like, honestly.

There must be something
that I need to learn,

because I just...
I can't handle the pressure.

- We're going over there?
- Yup.

- So just around that corner?
- Yeah.

- Chris is one
of the few climbers that lives

on the climbing Mount Olympus.

It's not every once in a while
you get to meet

the gods of rock climbing.

- We're probably headed
to that cliff up there.

- Don't say that.

- I love climbing with all of my heart.

I kind of have a background
in a lot of different types

of climbing, and so I think

whatever's kind of thrown at me,

I'll be able to adapt to it.

- It's gotta be that line right there.

- It has to be.
- It has to be this line.

- No.
- Let's go. Let's do this.

- With rock climbing, we're
competing against this rock.

The wall's not gonna get tired
in the middle of a game.

You're gonna get tired,

and it's about how you overcome that.

- Here we go, baby!

- Oh, my God.
- Whoo!

I consider myself a very,
like, powerful climber.

I have the advantage of, like, having

really good upper-body strength.

But going into this competition,

I'm very curious to see
how I handle it mentally.

- That's a bit... is that it there?

- That's gotta be it.

- Yes! We get to climb rocks!

- All right, everybody,

welcome to the first main climb

of this competition.

- Whoa, that's a little overwhelming.

- Oh, my God.

- I love how they chose a wall

that has a lot of texture to it.

It just builds over
more, more, more, more.

- I liking that this is

just a little bit closer to the water.

- It is a clean fall, though.

It is a clean fall into the water.

- Welcome.

This is deep water soloing.

It's just you, the rock, and the water.

So the name of this route
is called Golden Shower.

A friend of mine was climbing

while another friend
decided to play a prank

and peed on him while he was climbing.

- Oh!
- No!

- This is one of the first places

that I ever deep water soloed.

It was also the first place
I brought Jason.

And it totally blew his mind.
- Yeah.

- It's gonna challenge you,
but there's a chance

you'll be able to get to the top.

- The route you will be attempting

is 45 feet high.

The vertical bottom section
is a combination of ten moves

on small edges and rounded holds.

The hardest point, the crux,

is a slight overhang
30 feet above the water.

To get over it, you have to reach

over the bulge to a small pocket

and then regain your balance

on the small footholds below.

To navigate the final section,

you'll need to pay close attention

because the holds aren't that obvious.

- The goal is to get
to the top of the climb.

The two climbers who complete

the two shortest distances
will have to face off

in an elimination climb.

- Most rock climbers
know what it feels like

to fall on a rope
and to fall on a boulder.

To fall in water is
a completely different story.

Water feels like concrete fairly quickly.

The higher you get,
the higher the consequences.

- When it comes to a competition

where you can watch people climb,

your order is very important.

So here's what we're gonna do.

Today we will be randomly
assigning you a climbing order.

You're going to pull numbers
out of a hat,

and that is gonna be the order
that you're climbing in.

- Gosh.
- Ah!

- Yeah.

- Okay, okay.
- All right.

- Order is so important

because it allows you
to be tactical and strategic.

- Being last in a competition
is an advantage

because you can watch
how they make moves.

You can see where everyone else gets to.

- Let's go. Shake it up.

- Okay.
- Go, Brad.

- My heart's pounding
and my bladder's pounding.

Usually the person who goes first,

there's a lot of stress
because you don't get to watch

anyone else climb before you.

There's a lot kind of on your shoulders

because you know so little information

compared to what other people
will eventually learn.

- My number is...
riding the reign... number ten.

Let's go!
- Whoo!

- Yeah!
- Are you psyched?

- You guys psyched?

- Number four.
- Whoo!

- Nine, nine.
- Nine?

- Oh, man.
- Oh, my gosh.

- Whew, I don't have to go first.

- All right.
- Oh, f*ck.

- What is it?
- Oh.

- You got it.
- One.

- I just... [sighs]

I had this sinking feeling.
I was just like...

- You got it. You got it. It's okay.

- Yeah, that's good. That's good.

- It's okay.
- You got it.

- [chuckles]

- It's all right.
- It's fine.

The universe is pushing me.

- All right, guys. Let's do this.

Tiffany, you're up.

[dramatic music]

- When I was younger,

gymnastics was my competitive sport.

I ended up in a back brace

because my spine gave way.

And I couldn't walk,

and I couldn't stand upright without one.

It took a long time
to get me walking again.

I'm deeply, deeply terrified
of falling into the water.

I just don't want to get hurt again.

- You got it, Tiff.
- Come on.

- Yes, Tiffany.
- Handle it.

- You got it, girl. Come on.

- Sometimes people,

in those tense moments of pressure,

respond very well, you know,
just give it everything

and push through the fear.

And sometimes other people
crumple under that pressure.

♪ ♪

- I'm absolutely capable of doing this.

- You got it, Tiff.
- Come on.

- Yes, Tiffany.
- Handle it.

- Get it.

- It's about, how am I gonna
manage the fear?

♪ ♪

- Ready. Set.

[airhorn blares]

♪ ♪

Okay, she's moving in pretty confidently.

- She looks good.
- Yeah, she looks comfy.

♪ ♪

Honestly, for someone
who seems a little scared,

she's looking great on it.

♪ ♪

- She is pretty tall.

And that crux move is a reachy move.

Hopefully she's able to just
tune out her fears and...

go for it.

Now, this is the move.
This is the crux move.

- Come on, yeah. Nice.

- Into it nicely.
- The other leg.

- Yeah, she's going for it. She looks...

Yeah, this is the part that's,
like, more psychological.

You're higher up.

There's more holds that...
I think it's harder to read.

- Yeah.
- So you can see

she's definitely struggling right here.

You can tell she's getting
a little bit scared.

- Come on, breathe easy.
- You can do it.

- She's gotta... I think she has
to get her right foot up

on the pocket that she went to
on the crux.

It looks like she sees it. She sees it.

- Yup, there you go.

♪ ♪

- Come on, Tiffany.

- She's sketching right now.

♪ ♪

[somber music]

- Tiffany got into the crux section

of the pockets and then just...

it seems like she couldn't find

feet that she could trust.

- And I got caught up in,

"I don't want to fall backwards,

and I don't want to fall on my back."

And that is when I threw myself

off the whole thing.

I don't know if that's enough.

- Let's go, Brad.

Breathe easy, dude. You got this.

- Psyched to see Brad climb finally.

- Yeah.

- He has the least amount
of climbing experience

out of all the climbers here.

- Some of these people have been climbing

for as long as I've been alive.

It's a lot to think about, you know.

You have to be at the top
of your climbing performance

to be able to, you know, stand here.

But I just want to give it hell.

[dramatic music]

- Yeah, Brad!
- Go, Brad!

- Whoo-hoo!

- So right now, he is just
getting through the intro.

He's super confident.

And he's getting set up
for the crux right now.

- Come on!

- This is the... this is
the crux right here,

to reach that... that long reach
to get to the pocket.

- Come on, Brad!
- Yes!

- Yes!

Yes, Brad, you can do it!
- Good, Brad! Good!

- And so this is right
where Tiffany got to.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- Ooh, fumbling.

♪ ♪

He's fighting.
- Yeah.

Now, is he a little too far away now?

- He's, like, way off route,

but he's fighting for his
freaking life right there.

- Aah!
- Come on, Brad.

- Come on, Brad, come on!

- Come on, Brad!

- He looks kind of panicked.

♪ ♪

- Come on! Come on, Brad!

Yes!
- Yes!

[people cheering]

- I'm f*cking done!

- Whoo!
- Yeah!

- Whoo!

- Brad really thrived in this situation.

He was ready for it.

And being the young g*n of the group,

he just was like, "I'm out here to prove.

I'm out here to do."

- I completely messed up
and just didn't use

the holds in the right sequence.

And sometimes you just gotta go with it

and try and hold on as hard as you can.

- That's what I love to see, when people

have to just, like...
- Try their hardest.

- Dig deep.

That was so cool.

- Whoo!
- Whoo! Oh!

- To see Brad just kind of
accept the challenge

and commit, yeah, it was awesome.

I was really pumped about it.

And I was like, "Okay, cool.
This is great.

It's my turn."

- She's kind of
into that beginning section.

She's got a really good flow right now.

♪ ♪

- This is the crux right here.

♪ ♪

Nice.

Big reach, but she got the first slot.

- Alice, we know each other
through competing.

I mean, she is a powerhouse.

For me, it was just, like, a given

that she was gonna go straight up.

- Nice and easy!

♪ ♪

- Ah, nice.

- She's getting really close
to where Tiffany...

- [yelps]
- Oh.

♪ ♪

- When I fell off, I was like,

"I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be
in the bottom."

And it's like, that was
a really weird feeling.

- Oh, that's too bad.

- Alice is one of the strongest climbers

in this competition.

So for her to fall off where she did...

and we were all gutted for her,

because she didn't get to show
what she could do.

- I definitely didn't think
that I was gonna, like,

miss that move, and then I was like,

"Oh, my God, I'm falling, like"...

- Yeah, yeah.
- Oh, that's too bad.

She doesn't look very psyched.

- She does not look pleased.

- So Cat's up next.

♪ ♪

Definitely the shortest
competitor, and that move...

like, what's so hard about it
is, it's a reachy move.

- Exactly.
- So that's gonna be

really at his disadvantage.

- Come on, Cat!
- Nice, Cat.

♪ ♪

- I'm 5 feet tiny, 5 feet short.

And I get stopped every now and then

by my wingspan.

There are things that I can't reach.

There are things that I'm
physically unable to do.

As I was climbing it,
I was just thinking it's like,

"Hopefully it's something
that you're not gonna botch."

- He's moving nicely
through this section.

We've seen Tiffany and Alice
in this section,

and they both moved a little bit slower.

But he looks really confident

in every foot and hand placement.

- He looks solid, yeah.
- Good, there you go.

- Here's that crux move.

♪ ♪

- Yes!
- Yeah, dude.

- Wow, Cat, come on.
- Come on!

- Yup!
- Yeah, Cat.

- Come on.

- Cat is past Tiffany's spot.

- Yes, Cat.

- Absolutely crushed it.

- Solid. That was rad.

[people cheering]

- Topping out is a great feeling.

And it was even better

that I had all of them
in the boat with me,

cheering me on.
- You crushed it.

It was so cool to see from down here.

I was like...

- It was something special.

♪ ♪

[thunder booming]

- So our window's definitely shrinking

to get this done
with the weather right now.

But it's kind of...
- Yeah, the conditions

are getting trickier and trickier.

Cat just sent the route.

He was able to make it to the top.

- Exactly, so it can be done.

- So obviously it's still good to go.

- Exactly, and right now,

the two people that performed

lowest on the climb
are Tiffany and Alice.

Right now, you really just want
to be above those other people.

- It's gonna be interesting
to see Mario, huh?

- Yup.

- When it was my turn,

my biggest concern
was the wall being wet.

All the moves looked really doable,

but this thing looks like
it's just getting wetter

and wetter and wetter and wetter.

At that point, I was like,

"I wish I would have been going first."

- Come on, Mario!

♪ ♪

- He's going into the crux right now.

He's got the slot.

He's gotta get his foot up.

And he's gotta lock it down.

♪ ♪

- Come on!
- Come on, Mario!

- Come on!

- One more move, then we're bumped.

See if he can get it.

- Oh, f*ck, f*ck, f*ck, f*ck, f*ck.

- He looked good, but I saw,
when he went again,

his right hand popped off.

- So Robin's next.

- They all drew numbers thinking

that the last...
- Would be better.

- Place would be better,
but it could almost

turn out the opposite at this point.

- With the weather here, you never know.

♪ ♪

- Oh, f*ck.

- Your hands are soaking wet,
and everything is wet.

This is not ideal.

[indistinct shouting]

- Looks like she wants
to chalk up a little bit.

- You got it!
- Come on!

- Oh, just misses it.
- Aw.

- Looks really similar
to where Mario fell.

- Yeah.

- So next we have Deco.

- I'm super interested
to see him on this route.

He's definitely been concerned
about the conditions.

- I wasn't really counting on the rain.

But I'm here.
I have to try hard, you know?

I have to push it.

- He's going pretty slow,

which I kind of interpret that
as being methodical.

He really doesn't want
to have to go home.

- He did pass those other climbers

that were in the lower two,
so he's definitely safe.

♪ ♪

- [groans]

♪ ♪

- It looks like he's struggling
to find feet here.

- You got it.

You got it. Come on.
- Come on. Come on, Deco.

♪ ♪

- Oh!

- What?

- Kind of looked like
he just decided to jump off...

- Yeah.
- Instead of actually going.

- It looked like he kind of gave up.

- I don't understand.
- I know.

- Maybe he just knew
he'd already done it.

- Right, he doesn't want
to hurt himself, yeah.

[clears throat]
- Okay. Fair enough.

- Yup, I made a call. I jumped.

It was wet, and falling
from the top of the wall

with a foot slip would definitely involve

getting into the water
in the wrong body position.

I was just making sure that I could get

to the point where I needed to be safe.

- Personally, like,
if I can keep going...

- You want to.
- Even though if I know,

I want to go to the top, so...
- Always.

- I don't need to climb
everything to the top.

I just need to be better than
the last two guys, you know?

- You got this, April!

- So April's 53 years old,
which is incredible.

- That's right.

I'm really excited to see

how she does on this route.

- Before I came here,
I dreamt I was the youngest

and there was all these people
with gray hair.

And then when I arrive and there...

you've got your 20-year-olds
and your 30-year-olds.

There's no 40-year-olds.
And then there's me, 53.

What am I doing here?

Why am I here?

- You got it, April!
- You got it.

- Come on!

- Well, I'm scared of falling off

and hurting myself.

- Maybe she's getting
into her groove up there.

She looks good. She looks psyched.

- I've pushed myself hard,

but I don't think
I've pushed myself this hard

for a long, long time.

- Come on!
- Come on!

- Yes!

- Whoo!
- Nice.

Awesome.

- She's kind of
second-guessing herself here.

- Oh, my God.
- Oh.

Oh!
- [squeals]

- Oh.

- I hope she fell okay.

- Oh.

- So when I fell, my whole attitude

to climbing above water changed.

I wasn't concerned anymore.

And that felt really good.

[people cheering]

That's why we love to climb.

And, you know, it is being able

to keep it all together

when you're totally frightened.

And I think that's where we all
understand each other.

No excuses. Get stronger.

- All in all, I think
a good showing, though,

from April.
She didn't look scared at all.

Just one climber to go, Dom.

- Come on, Dom.
- [wolf whistle]

- Growing up in Southern California,

surfing, the sound of waves crashing

is actually soothing to me.

So hopefully it'll allow me

to do the best I can on the climb.

- You got this, Dom!
- Whoo!

- You got it, Dom.

- Interesting, he is probably
the most ripped contestant

we have here, but, you know, sometimes

that doesn't always mean
that you are a better climber.

- So this is the moment
of truth right here.

- He looks casual.
- Yeah. Solid. Super solid.

- He is definitely ready to send.

- [grunts]

- He needs to bump that left hand

to that pocket again.

Maybe he forgot about it? Uh-oh.

- Ay.

- Oh!
- Ooh!

- Wow, that was a big surprise.
- Yeah.

- My foot slipped in between the cracks,

and it literally seemed like

as soon as I was on the wall,
I was off the wall.

- Congrats. That was awesome.

You did really, really good,
especially Cat and Brad.

You made it to the top.

It was so epic.
- Yeah, boys!

- Yeah, boys!
- Whoo-hoo!

- It was too close to call,
so what we're gonna do is,

we're gonna go back to the harbor,

we're gonna review the footage,

and then we'll let you guys know

who will be going
in that elimination climb-off.

- I knew I had fallen

where a few of us had fallen.

I didn't get super high up on the route.

But, God, I'm just hoping for the best.

♪ ♪

- I am not ready to go home.

I do not think I performed

nearly as well as I should have.

It is a reality
that I just have to accept.

- Hello.
- Hello.

- Yay, you're all dry.
- It's sunny out now.

- Ugh, what are the odds?

- That was an epic day, guys, really.

I'm proud of you all.

It was pretty gnarly conditions.

And you should all be
really proud of yourselves.

- Chris and I reviewed the footage.

One of you clearly climbed
the shortest distance.

April.

April, you are going
to the elimination climb.

- Thank you for another
opportunity to climb.

- Yeah.
- You're very welcome.

- I'm good.

I haven't shown you my best yet.

I haven't shown you
anywhere near what I can do.

I want to climb rock,

and I want to show what I can do.

- Three of you...
Mario and Maiza and Alice...

reached the same point on the climb.

So it came down to time.

Mario...

you were the fastest, so you're good.

Alice...

you were the slowest.

So you'll be going up against April

in the elimination climb.

♪ ♪

- I didn't feel like I really blew it.

I guess I was just surprised.

I'm literally reliving, like,
my worst moment in the past,

where everyone would
come up to me and say,

"You're gonna win today.
This is your comp.

This is your chance."

I blew it then.

It's just, like, a lot of pressure.

But that's the real fear
that I need to deal with.

- Alice and April had a rough go

on the main climb.

But I think this is what it's all about.

I'm trying to take our climbers

on a journey that's gonna
put them to the test

on many different levels.

Ultimately I just want to see them give

the best that they have to give.

[birds chirping]

- That was f*cking rough.

- [chuckles] It was
kind of crazy, wasn't it?

- I think so.

- Because it's terrifying
to be so close to the bottom.

And I don't feel like I can
handle being in there again.

It is just... it is so hard.

Do you have a gut feeling
of who's going home?

- I think Alice is going
to give it her all.

I'm afraid of Alice being in her way.

- Mm-hmm.
- Of, like, herself

being in her way.
- Mm-hmm.

- And April and I are
the two oldest people here.

- Mm-hmm.
- I'm very afraid

that April will want to be

in a position where she feels like,

"You know, I've done enough,"
and she might punt.

- Mm.
- I don't know.

Like, I think this is anyone's game.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

- It's one wrong move and it just...

it can change everything.

[dramatic music]

- All right, just be careful right here.

- Okay.

♪ ♪

- April, Alice,
this is the elimination climb.

There's no ropes, no harnesses,
just you and the rock

and the water below
to catch you if you fall.

- You will each have one attempt

to complete this climb.

Whomever climbs the shortest distance

will go home.

- Our first climb was
quite consistently difficult

throughout the whole thing.

This climb, however,
is much more overhanging,

and it's kind of broken up

into several different sections.

Section one is a sloping face
with comfortable holds.

Section two, the overhang,
is a gravity-defying test

of pure upper-body strength

leading you to the final sequence,

a short but steep vertical wall

bound to burn whatever energy
you have left in your arms.

- So, April, do you have
any first thoughts

when you're looking at the climb?

- Let me on it.
- [laughs] I like that.

That's a great first thought.

- During the main climb,

when I first tried deep water soloing,

I was pretty intimidated
about the fall to the water.

Once I stepped onto the rock,

I didn't even think about the water.

I just climbed.

So I am hopefully gonna feel
the same in the elimination.

I'm gonna just think about the rocks.

- Alice, I saw you make a little face

when you heard
that we were doing that climb.

- I remember that climb
from the last time I was here

and being really, really scared of it.

I've actually been to Mallorca
previously.

My friends climbed this climb,

and I was too intimidated to try it.

Yeah, it's scary.
I mean, you could definitely go

flailing off... [chuckles] Again.

I'm not super excited to have to revisit

that, like, memory.

I'm starting to feel, like,
a lot of anxiety.

- I'm just psyched
to see you, like, battle

with your nerves and get scared
and push through that.

- Mm-hmm.
- That's kind of

what deep water soloing is all about.

We all have different dramas
going on in our lives, right?

But then we get onto the rock

and we're able to push it all out.

In order to be successful climbing,

you really have to be able
to push that out, you know?

And if... otherwise, you know,

if those things are kind of
coming into our thoughts,

you know, that could really
affect our performance.

[bell tolling]

- Place is so cool.

I mean, the architecture here is so nice.

You know, those balconies
and everything is so nice.

- When you, like, actually stop
and look at the details

on the things...
- Yeah.

- Like, it's really cool.
- Yeah, it is.

- I've never been
a super-competitive person.

It's always more of just for myself.

So it's, like, I do local comps
for fun sometimes, but...

Do you all come from comps
or do them or...

- I've done a couple locals,
very similar.

But curious to see how it translates.

- I haven't done comps
for a really long time.

And I always felt like
these types of situations

were not something I'm very good at.

I think, like, everyone's
greatest fear at this point

is, like, going home the first week.

It's, like, kind of intense,
like, feeling that,

like, pressure.

I've thought about what mistakes I made

on the main climb.

Now I need to go through the stage

where I empower myself and wrap my head

around the idea that I can do this.

different than our last climb.

This is, in general,
just more overhanging,

steeper, more physical.

- More upper body.

It's gonna be really interesting to see

go head-to-head on this route.

It seems like Alice,

she's gonna have to really step it up

if she wants to hang in there.

- I'm kind of nervous.

I mean, everyone knows
April has a lot of experience.

She's been climbing for a very long time.

She knows what she's doing.

So, you know, we'll just see how it goes.
