Our Times (2025)

Post by bunniefuu »

[birds chirping and singing]

[dramatic music playing]

[indistinct chattering]

[woman 1] Hi!

-[woman 2] I'll see you next class, okay?

-[man] Wait.

[professor] What exactly is a wormhole?

Think of it as a portal,

a temporary shortcut.

A wormhole connects two distant points

in the space-time continuum,

through which we can pass

from point A to point B.

To make this journey

requires a constant flow

of special particles

that travel much faster

than the speed of light.

These particles are called tachyons.

According to one theory,

a wormhole forms every 30 years

in our solar system,

when the planet Earth

and all the other planets

fall into exact alignment.

This is the groovy part.

If we subscribe to this theory,

it opens the possibility

of traveling to another time.

[machinery humming]

[uplifting music playing]

OUR TIMES

That's all the time we have today.

See you all tomorrow.

As always, remember to keep an open mind.

Doctor, have you thought

about my proposal?

Please say I can work with you.

[sighs] I don't know.

I'm so sorry, Julia.

All the other doctors here get assistants.

And you're the reason

that I want to study science.

For me, you're just incredible.

All of your studies,

all of the things you've accomplished

at this university.

-I'll try my best, okay?

-Thanks.

["Kissin' on the Phone"

by Csar Costa playing]

[students chattering indistinctly]

[telephone ringing]

-[woman speaking indistinctly]

-Good afternoon. How are you, Berta?

[time clock clicks]

NATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL

[typewriter clacking]

-Hard at work, Sandra?

-Always.

Hey, uh, we got a delivery

from the Soviet Union, right?

Uh, that information goes

straight to Dr. Quijano, normally.

But if you were to get

your husband to ask,

he'd be given

that information immediately.

-[Sandra chuckles]

-[door opens]

Professor! I'm out the door,

but what can I do for you today?

[Nora] I heard we got

a shipment from the Soviets.

I'm wondering whether

they sent me my transducers.

Yes, yes, yes. My sincere apologies.

I I completely forgot

to give the news to Dr. Esquivel.

They have arrived.

Mm. But the order

didn't come from Dr. Esquivel.

-It's my order.

-Uh

There's something else.

I'd like to request an assistant.

-I have a volunteer.

-Assistant?

Listen, sweetheart,

I already gave you

what you wanted so badly.

-Mm-hmm.

-Your class.

Now you want an assistant?

I'll keep it in mind. How about that?

If you'll excuse me, sweetheart.

[typewriter clacking]

[mischievous music playing]

Maria?

Maria?

[mischievous music continuous]

MANUFACTURED IN USSR

[power tools whirring]

ENTRY PROHIBITED

AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY

[lock clicks]

[keys jingle]

[man on radio]

And let's get the romantic music going.

[fanfare plays over radio]

[hammer clanging distantly]

[blowtorch crackling]

[thudding]

This next song is climbing the charts,

and it's sure to set some hearts

aflutter this afternoon.

Here is another soon-to-be timeless

classic from the musical pantheon.

It goes out to all you lovers out there.

["Acompame" by Roco Drcal playing]

[singing in Spanish]

[singing in Spanish]

[both singing]

[machinery rumbling]

-[water trickling]

-[clock ticking]

[singing continues over radio]

[sighs]

You got it at last.

-[laughs]

-This is the moment.

-Come on.

-[gasps]

[door creaking]

[machine powering up]

[sighs]

It works.

-[buttons and switches click and beep]

-[electricity humming]

[crackling]

We've opened the portal, Hctor.

[machine thrumming]

Ready?

[lever cranks]

[thrumming intensifies]

Come on, come on, come on.

-[Hctor laughs]

-[Nora] It's working.

[thrumming intensifies]

-We're doing it.

-We're doing it.

-[metallic creaking]

-[thuds]

[electricity crackles]

[Nora] No.

-What happened? It barely even got going.

-[machine powering down]

[sighs]

I think this means

we're going to need a lot more money.

Have you thought about how to get it?

I invited Dr. Carrasco

to come eat at the house this evening.

For dinner? It's much simpler

to meet him in his office.

I know, but he's been interrogating me

about all the money that we've spent.

That man just makes me mad.

I know.

Sometimes he drives me around the bend.

Come here.

It just means we need

to butter him up a little bit.

Keep that river of money flowing our way.

We're coming so close, Nora.

Almost. I can taste it.

[chuckles softly]

Shut up and kiss me, you fool.

[both chuckle]

[sizzling]

[Hctor] Get this, honey.

Mexico City is going to have

its own subway system.

-Oh, yeah?

-Yeah.

It says they'll start

building it within a year.

They're getting pretty fancy here.

Maybe a subway means we'll have a city

without all those traffic jams.

We really are living in the future.

Hey, Hctor.

[Hctor] Hmm?

What's the plan for Dr. Carrasco?

We just tell him what we're working on.

Sure, but then he's going to make us

show him some results.

[Hctor] Nope. No way.

We're not ready to do that, Nora.

[doorbell rings]

-Hello, Nora.

-My darling!

I'm so glad to see you!

-Hello, Rebeca.

-How are you, Hctor?

[clock ticking]

What's that look in your eyes?

[Rebeca] Let me give you a clue.

It begins with an egg,

and it turns into a human being.

[gasps]

[laughing]

Congratulations!

-Very happy for you, Rebeca.

-Thanks, Hctor.

You may not have wanted kids,

but you're stuck being aunt and uncle.

[both laugh]

The happiest ones in the world.

What did Vincent say?

He doesn't know yet.

I wanted you both to hear it first.

He's going to be over the moon.

Come up for dinner later.

You can watch him when I break the news.

-[chuckles softly]

-Okay?

Mm it's just, we already made plans.

We're having Dr. Carrasco over for dinner.

Meeting about the project?

The top secret one?

Come on, tell me!

It's just that you know

the university keeps it under wraps.

Oh!

But tomorrow, we'll have dinner together.

And I'll make that big apple pie

that you always love so much.

Mm? [chuckles]

Baby sister.

You're going to be a wonderful mother.

Oh!

[Nora laughs]

-My sweetheart.

-[laughs]

Okay, enough. Time for me to go.

-See you, Hctor.

-[Hctor] Bye, Rebeca.

-Goodbye, my darling.

-Goodbye, my darling.

[door closes]

-[Carrasco] Cheers.

-[Hctor] Cheers, Doctor. To science, hmm?

[Carrasco] Mm-hmm.

-Mmm.

-[Carrasco] Mmm.

Ah, now that's a Chianti.

-You like it?

-A fine bottle.

Doctor, have you heard

that students want to take down

the statue of ex-president Alemn?

That's ridiculous. Unless they blow it up.

[all laugh]

["Roto" by Benny Ibarra playing on radio]

So perhaps, with your permission,

it's time to talk business.

Tell me, Doctor,

how are the experiments going?

Well, fine. Uh

[Carrasco] Doctor, for many years

I've had your back, defended you.

But the university

has spent an arm and a leg

on this research project.

-Right, of course.

-I need your help.

Show me some results, for God's sake.

Yes, Doctor. I owe a lot to you.

In fact, everything.

Let me be perfectly honest.

The truth is, we need more time

and another round of funding.

No, no, no. Do you want me to have a fit?

-[Hctor] Of course not.

-We developed a theory.

No, no. Honey pie, no.

This institution

didn't dig deep into its pockets

just for you to dream up

some silly theory.

You need to show me

exactly what you are doing.

Where is the money going?

Right, Doctor,

but we need a couple of weeks, maybe more.

No, no, no, no. Impossible, impossible.

Give me results I can take to the honchos.

They're putting the screws to me.

When we're ready to unveil a prototype,

you'll have the whole university begging--

You, Doctor,

are about to put Mexico on the map.

The faculty. The university.

Us two.

This is gonna revolutionize science,

turn physics upside down.

This'll

This'll have an effect

on the history of humanity.

-Yes.

-[Carrasco] Mm-hmm.

[laughs]

Have I ever told you the story

of when I met Kennedy

and his wife, Jackie?

Uh, no.

Watching them together, I realized

what the secret of their success was.

He looked after

the important matters of state.

She took care of the cameras.

And each one knew what their role was.

[inhales sharply]

If you have the components you need,

but they're installed the wrong way round

the system doesn't work.

-Hmm?

-[clock chiming]

[gasps]

That's it, Hctor.

That's it.

That's that's

That's it.

Is she all right?

[Nora] That's it. That's it.

I'm afraid to say,

given that you have nothing to show me,

I find myself obliged

to advise the governing council

to terminate your experiments.

Doctor, we worked on this for years.

-If you could only--

-Doctor.

First thing tomorrow,

we can give you a demonstration.

Very well.

I wish you good evening.

Thank you for the dinner, Dr. Esquivel.

Those fritters your wife makes

are out of this world.

-I know, right?

-Thanks.

-All right.

-Please give my regards to Mrs. Carrasco.

I'll make fritters for her another time.

-My husband will see you out.

-Allow me.

Bye-bye.

[door opens]

[Nora] We've got the answer, Hctor.

[Hctor] What answer?

[Nora] The answer provided

by the insufferable Dr. Carrasco.

We have all the pieces of the puzzle,

but they're just not in the right order.

[Hctor] I don't see how

the machine's malfunctions

have anything to do

with the water in a toilet.

The Coriolis effect.

Which is, if I flush the toilet

in the Southern Hemisphere,

the water spirals one way,

but if I'm in the Northern Hemisphere,

it goes the opposite.

We'll change the settings so the machine

turns in the other direction.

-[exhales excitedly]

-Give me a screwdriver.

What's Carrasco's problem, anyway?

Extreme stupidity.

A Phillips head now.

Sure, he's an idiot,

but you don't stand up to him.

You want me to pick a fight with him?

Make sure you don't mix up

the sequence of the cards, okay?

I'm not saying pick a fight with him,

but at least show him you value my role.

And no, I'm not going to mix up

the sequence of the cards.

This one goes here.

-[computer beeps]

-And this one here.

This one

[machinery humming]

-Ready to go.

-[Hctor laughs]

[Nora] Plug in the transducer.

[electrical crackling]

[machinery powering up]

[loud rumbling]

[clicking]

Hctor, the portal is still open.

And we've still got a signal.

[turbines powering up]

Nora.

Shall we travel?

[machinery rumbling]

-Okay. [exhales sharply]

-Let's travel.

[Hctor] Hatches.

[Nora] Hatches.

[hatch closes]

Hctor.

Shall we travel to the past?

Or to the future?

The future.

[Nora] How far?

Maximum 15 minutes, okay?

[Nora] Fifteen minutes.

[Hctor] Turbines?

[turbines whirring]

[Nora] Turbines activated.

[Hctor] Oxygen?

[buttons beep]

Oxygen activated.

Power level?

[punching buttons]

A hundred percent.

Tachyons?

TACHYONS

Generating tachyons.

Levels on Gauss meter?

Gauss meter is stable.

The levels are green.

[exhales]

All set.

[beeping]

Nora

You're a wonder!

[whirring intensifies]

[whirring continues to intensify]

[Nora echoing] I'm not going back.

[Hctor, echoing] Let's go back

Let's go back Let's go back

This here's the future, huh

Future Future

[distorted laughter]

[Alondra] No, Aunt.

Not by themselves. They came together.

[Nora] All this All this

is both of us.

[deep rumbling]

[powering down]

-[panting]

-[groans]

[both breathing heavily]

Are you okay, Nora?

-Uh, yeah. I think so.

-Yes? You sure?

You?

My head is whirling.

I'm getting pins and needles

all over my body. You?

-Same here.

-Really?

It's so weird.

[groans]

[Nora sighs]

Nora, what is this place?

Uh

Why aren't we?

Why aren't we still in the lab?

Come on.

[latch locks click]

[ice cracks]

[both breathing heavily]

[Hctor] What was that?

[metal groans]

-[Nora] No--

-[Hctor] What's happening?

Nora?

Hey, hey. Did you do something?

No, no.

[dramatic music playing]

We lost all power.

-Nora, the transducer.

-Huh?

[sniffs]

It got fried.

[groans]

[grunts]

[breathing heavily]

[Hctor] This can't be right. That's

We definitely traveled further

than 15 minutes, huh?

The university

has got to be

up that way, or

or a few miles that way.

It all depends on

On how much time we've traveled

in the future.

[whimsical music playing]

Hctor?

[Hctor] It could be that we miscalculated

the velocity of the tachyons.

We traveled

into the future.

[whimsical music continuous]

Ah!

[gasps] Ah!

-Mm!

-[laughs]

[both moan]

[Hctor] We did it, honey!

We pulled it off. Nora, we did it.

[exhales sharply]

[exhales then sniffles]

What's the plan?

-Uh, the biggest priority

-[music fades]

We need to replace the damaged transducer.

And run all the calculations again

to pinpoint the mistake.

-[sighs]

-We have to find the university.

The university. Right.

[whimsical music resumes]

MEXICO IS FEMALE

VOTE RUTH

THE FUTURE IS TODAY!

[car door hissing open]

[music fades]

[door hissing closed]

-[engine whirring]

-[tires screech]

[engine warbles]

[Nora] So do you suppose

this is some kind of grocery store?

But a much more modern one?

Huh.

Hctor, exactly how far

did we travel into the future?

Who knows? Come on.

Good evening to you.

[pop music playing over earbuds]

[Nora] Excuse me, miss?

Hello there?

No, no, no, she can't hear us.

She has some condition or other.

-That's why she has the

-Yeah.

Oh. Which flavor would you like?

Uh, pardon?

What flavor condom would you like?

Like, which flavor?

Or did you want to go

with one of the textured ones?

-No.

-Condoms? No, no, no.

[Hctor laughs]

How could I ask such a thing

in the presence of two women?

Oh, well, I don't know.

Um, did you say they have flavors?

[clerk] Yeah. You've got passion fruit,

big banana, cherry pie, watermelon.

-There's one called kumquat.

-Look.

-[clerk] Which is weird.

-Nora.

Look.

[Nora] We traveled

Fifty-nine years into the future.

[whimsical music playing]

[laughs]

[newspaper ruffles]

[Nora sighs]

[music fades]

Do you?

Do you happen to know how to get

to the University of National Autonomy

of Mexico?

-The UNAM.

-Yes.

Did you get here by car?

No. Not precisely by car, no.

So then your best bet

is to take the subway.

You go down this street, hang a left,

in two blocks you're at the station.

-Subway?

-Yeah.

This I've got to see.

Thanks a lot. Good night.

Catch you later.

EXI[pensive music playing]

What are those contraptions?

They all have one.

Perhaps

it's a machine that hypnotizes them?

-You think?

-[sighs]

Pardon me?

Um, which way do we go to get to the UNAM?

-Two stations further up.

-Then transfer to the green line.

-Thank you.

-Transfer to the green line.

Huh!

-[chuckles]

-It's amazing, isn't it?

[train horn blares]

Look at that.

Incredible.

Hctor!

[dramatic music playing]

[police siren wailing distantly]

[Hctor] Nora.

[Nora] Where's the great Alemn?

[tense, pensive music playing]

I told you so.

[Nora]

Everything looks the same as before.

[Hctor] A little run-down, but otherwise

[Nora] Mm-hmm.

If nothing has changed,

the equipment room should be open, right?

-As usual.

-Yes. Let's hope it is.

Hctor, Hctor, Hctor.

What in the world is this?

DEATH TO PATRIARCHY

Is

Is it, uh, a student thing?

I guess, but--

But what's this about death to patriarchy?

What patriarchy do they mean?

Uh, no idea, Doctor. Come.

[Nora] Is it working? Yeah?

[Hctor] Yeah.

[lock clicks]

Got it.

After you.

[camera whirring]

Hctor?

This isn't the equipment room for physics.

No doubt about that.

Seems to belong to architecture.

How are we supposed

to find the transducer?

-[sighs]

-Who knows? Maybe

Maybe they moved the stuff upstairs.

[Nora] Mm

"No smoking"?

What do they have against smoking?

-[female guard] Hey, you two.

-[Nora] Hctor!

-Put that back where it belongs.

-Evening, officer.

[male guard] Mm, hello there.

Oh, hello.

What exactly are you up to here?

-But we haven't stolen a thing, officer.

-Mm-hmm.

Because we busted you.

Tell them we're looking

for the physics department equipment room.

We're looking for

Okay.

Officer, the truth is,

the two of us are faculty here.

My name is Dr. Esquivel.

This is Dr. Cervantes.

In fact, take us to the dean.

He knows us perfectly well.

-Right. Right.

-You said, "He"?

-Faculty, huh?

-Yeah, right.

You say you work for the university,

but your only proof of employment

is a weird little ID card.

Issued in the year 1966.

[clicks tongue]

I think Pee-wee Herman

wants his bow tie back.

-Who's Pee-wee?

-You know, like Pee-wee's Big Adventure?

What's the big adventure?

[female guard] Oh.

What planet have you been living on?

-We traveled in time from the year 1966.

-[tense music playing]

Our time machine suffered some damage,

and we're stranded here

in 2025 by accident.

All we need is to replace the transducer,

power up the system,

check that everything works

and return to the year we came from.

Mm. Take a seat, mister.

We're gonna need to run

a toxicology screen.

-She wants to test us for drugs?

-You want to test us for drugs?

We are not drug addicts, officer.

[tense music swells]

[female guard] Good morning, ma'am.

Good morning to you.

That'll be all for now.

Good morning.

-Let's go, Carlos.

-You can go too. Wait for me outside.

[dramatic music playing]

Um

[door closes]

[tender music playing]

You came back.

I knew you would.

The two of you

went through a wormhole to get here.

-It's amazing!

-Yes.

It's true. Uh

Pardon me, but

who are you exactly?

Julia Villalba.

-I was your student once.

-[gasps]

-And now I'm the dean of the university.

-Julia

It's Julia, from my class! Julia?!

-No way!

-Yeah!

You're the dean?

[gasps]

-Oh!

-[Julia chuckles]

Julia.

I had a feeling.

I knew that you would go

really far in life, Julia!

No, no. Not nearly as far as you.

[sighs]

I was sure that you must have traveled

in time with that machine of yours.

I told them.

But no one believed it.

What-- What do you mean?

I-- I always believed you.

This is Alondra.

She's Rebeca's grandchild.

Huh?

She's one of the brightest students

in the university.

It must run in the family.

Y-Y-You're the daughter of

[spluttering] Who's your mother?

Rebequita? Rebeca is my grandma.

-Of course! Rebeca!

-Ah! Rebeca!

Rebeca had a daughter!

A bunch of girls!

[both laugh]

-God!

-[sighs]

[music fades]

I never thought I'd meet you.

The brilliant Dr. Nora.

-My great-auntie.

-[Nora laughs]

Because of you, I study physics.

-For real?

-[Alondra] Yeah!

-Such a cute little nose!

-Is it?

[Hctor] Well, thank goodness

that you know each other.

It's a relief to know

you're all aware of our situation.

-That's right.

-Uh, Julia

Sorry. Dean.

We need your help.

The portal that let us time travel,

mm, is still open for now,

but it could shut down at any moment.

Yes. It might happen in days,

or even hours.

We won't be able to get an exact idea

unless we can start the machine

and run a complete systems check

on all the instruments,

look for any damage to the components,

repair them,

and run the numbers

to see where our calculations were off.

You want to return?

It's very important

that we tell absolutely no one

what you are doing here

until I can find a way to explain this

to the scientific community.

So many things have changed.

[Nora] Oof.

Our technology has created a world of

endless surprises.

[Hctor] Hmm.

-[Alondra] Where to start?

-Yeah.

-[lock chimes]

-[computerized voice] Door unlocked.

Mom? I'm home.

-[Rebequita] Coming!

-There's some people I want you to meet.

Hctor.

-[Hctor] A pleasure.

-Hello, Hctor.

[Alondra] And this is Nora.

[Rebequita] Hello, Nora.

I'm your auntie!

[laughs] Oh, really? You

My father's side of the family or what?

My God.

You look

[tender music playing]

You look exactly like your mother.

I don't get it.

No.

[cries softly]

Auntie Nora?

Yes.

[Rebequita] It's a miracle.

[both laughing]

[Rebequita] Here's the house specialty.

The famous apple pie.

Absolutely. We bake it every Sunday.

-We never miss a week, right?

-Never.

I learned to make this from a recipe

I found in my mother's cookbook

And here it is.

[Rebequita laughs]

-Oh, thank you.

-But why

Why didn't Rebeca show you

how to bake the pie herself?

She made that recipe a million times.

Is she living in the same place still?

I want to go see her.

[Rebequita] Mom, uh

passed away shortly after

the two of you went missing.

Just after I was born.

What do you mean?

On the highway, in a car accident.

-[gasps]

-[Rebequita] She never gave up.

She looked for you high and low.

[somber music playing]

[Nora sighs]

No.

Hctor.

Hctor, we gotta go back.

[spluttering] She

She wouldn't have died if we hadn't been

If we hadn't been missing.

No, but don't even think that.

No one ever saw it that way.

Besides, if you go back,

everything would be different.

Maybe we should try

to get a little rest, yeah?

And you and I can make up the bed

in the guest room, Alondra.

-Sure, Mom. Sure.

-No, no, please don't bother.

It's okay.

Dean Julia arranged a place for us.

Mm.

Hey, uncle, wouldn't you like

to look someone up?

Don't you need to see your family?

You're looking at an only child, Alondra.

Nora is my only family.

[poignant music playing]

[car horns blaring]

Hey.

What do you think?

How do I look?

[Nora] Hmm.

-Nice.

-Yeah?

[music fades]

But a little strange, no?

It's just

It seems to me these pants

aren't quite long enough.

Yeah, I know, but when I wear them

like they're supposed to go, look.

My underwear's showing.

[both laugh]

All right.

Let's put them back up.

-You think?

-Yes.

Better to show off your ankles

than to show off your underwear.

-I agree.

-My turn?

Let's have a look.

Hold on now.

Aren't these a little tight for you?

-No, they fit me just fine.

-Yeah?

You look beautiful.

But whenever I look at you, I'll be

thinking that you dressed up like a man.

[both laugh]

[Nora] Hmm.

[Nora chuckles]

It's a lot to deal with.

Yeah, I know.

Did you see that television thingie?

Like the ones they carry around with them.

Yeah, but this one

is three times the size.

So I see.

[Nora] How does it work?

Who knows? But they're always

touching the screen. Try touching it.

Okay.

[over speakers] Baby, shake that booty

We're dancing at the party

We're rough and we've just got here

We live for the night life

I stand by myself

And I don't mingle with the trash, right

Baby, shake that booty for me

Baby, shake that booty for me, for me

She fell for a rascal like me

I'll stay on the streets

Where I feel happy--

-[turns music off]

-Let's turn it off for now.

Yeah.

Yeah.

How poetic.

[Nora scoffs]

Let's stick with silence.

-[laughs]

-It never goes out of style.

[both chuckle]

[Nora] Look at all these high-rises.

[Hctor] Hmm.

Seems like this city

has nowhere to go but up.

[distant traffic ambience]

[whimsical, pensive music playing]

-Hctor?

-Hmm?

I can't believe that

that we're living in the future.

[laughs]

Iodine.

Livermorium.

Uranium.

[Nora chuckles]

I love you too.

You do?

[Nora] Mm.

What do you say to

a little lovemaking

in the future?

[laughs]

[man coughing]

[pen scratching]

Okay.

-Good morning, all.

-[all] Good morning.

The documents

that we are about to consider

are strictly confidential

and for your eyes only.

Please do not share them with anyone.

Sorry, but, well, um

I'm still trying

to wrap my head around this.

I've spent my whole career

studying theories about space and time,

and now the proof of every one of them

is sitting right here, looking at us.

As we heard the dean say, we must maintain

a state of absolute secrecy.

Until we at least understand the important

effects this could have on humanity.

Doctor, you asked us

to repair the machine.

-Mm-hmm, yeah.

-Say we're able to achieve this.

But let's stop to consider

the perils of paradoxical outcomes

of sending them back to the past.

Imagine, what if it affects

the present reality that we inhabit?

[man] The doctor raises a valid concern.

If I may, Dean Villalba?

[Julia] By all means.

As you can see, we've proven

that traveling to the future is possible.

Now, traveling back to the past

is still just a-- A hypothesis.

It entails some risks,

and we imagine

there will be a few surprises.

But the theory, uh

Our theory

says it's very important to find the exact

moment that allows us to rejoin the past.

Our analog meter malfunctioned,

but with your highly advanced instruments,

we should be okay.

[Nora] This explains why we jumped ahead

59 years and not 15 minutes.

You'll find a full and detailed analysis

in the report you see before you.

[Nora] Exactly.

Doctors, uh, what do you suggest

is the next step for us?

[Hctor] Well, of course,

the most important thing

is to get the machine running.

Yes.

We will need, um, components

that are compatible with this technology

and obviously your experience and advice.

It's crucial for us

to measure the magnetic field

to verify that the wormhole is still open

and is thus a viable means of time travel.

If the wormhole closes,

we will have to wait

another 30 years to go back.

[Julia] Rogelio, if you would, please?

We'll be supplying each of you

with a cellular phone.

Everyone, please give them

your contact information

-and make yourselves available 24/7

-Just like on the subway.

should the doctors need anything.

-Assuming that you all agree

-Yes. Cool.

I will formally ask the university

to put your current

research projects on hiatus

so that you can devote

all your energies to our situation.

Now, I propose we establish

the work hours for the project.

[Hctor] Excuse me.

How does it work?

Touch the screen with your fingers.

Help them out, Alondra.

Uh, I think this one's broken?

-No, it doesn't--

-Here, allow me.

Press this button here and hold it down.

-Ah.

-Here's yours. Right there.

It means that in the screen

there must be many semiconductors,

and touching the screen closes a circuit.

-Ingenious.

-[laughs]

This here's the future, huh?

[chuckles]

[soft jazz music playing over speakers]

-Hctor?

-Hmm?

What exactly is this thing,

"the Internet"?

Well, according to the Internet,

the Internet is a series of computers

sending information to each other

in every part of the world.

And they connect to each other

with networks that have no wires,

using a radio frequency of 2.4

Whoa.

and even 5 gigahertz!

-Gigahertz?

-Mm-hmm.

[scoffs]

Those signals must be going everywhere.

Wave after wave.

It's omnipresent.

-[imitating ghost groaning]

-[chuckles]

[both laugh]

[Nora] The lab is unrecognizable.

[Hctor] I'd rather have the old clutter.

It's more romantic.

My head is spinning

with all these screens.

[machinery humming and whirring]

[Nora sighs]

It's amazing that this tiny device

can hold so much information.

Why aren't you using yours?

[door opens and closes]

[laughs]

The transducers.

These aren't Russian.

Why Russian? They're Chinese.

I think the university gets them

on Republic of El Salvador.

[whimsical, pensive music playing]

The the street here?

Downtown?

Ah.

[woman] Doctors?

We ran a complete series

of continuity tests.

All the circuits are good.

Perfect.

[buttons beeping]

[machinery humming]

[man] All the controls are up and running.

The turbine is producing power.

[machinery buzzing]

[Hctor] Let me see.

Let's see.

[Nora] The magnetic field

is getting weaker.

The portal could disappear any minute now.

[Hctor] The apparatus is working.

The needle is moving.

But we're not getting any tachyons.

[sighs]

This can't be happening.

The machine appears to be working.

So far,

we have rebooted

the tachyon generator three times, but

I can't figure out

why it's not generating tachyons.

[cork pops]

[sighs]

Doctor, I think what you need

is a little time off.

[exhales]

-Here.

-Let's see

-Cheers.

-Cheers, Dr. Dreamboat.

-Ooh!

-Mm!

-This wine's terrific.

-Because it's from our times, Doctor.

-[laughs] Come on.

-Mm-hmm.

[Nora] Mm.

Never

will I cease to admire

your beautiful eyes, Nora.

Never.

Shut up and kiss me, you fool.

[chuckles]

Look at you two hard at it.

-[Hctor] Hmm?

-Hi.

-[Alondra] Hi.

-[Hctor] Hi, Alondra.

-How's it going?

-[Nora] Uh

Bad.

You two look exhausted.

-Why don't you call it quits?

-[Nora] Mm!

You want me to order you a Lyft?

A what?

Mm!

-This stuff is primo.

-[Nora] Mm-hmm.

Take a Lyft back home.

You can hail a cab from your cell phone.

Ah, a Lyft.

-[chuckles]

-No, that's okay, sweetie.

We should stay a little longer

and run some numbers.

Up to you.

[Nora] Mm.

-So I'll see you tomorrow, I guess.

-[Nora] Mm-hmm.

-For sure. Good night.

-Okay. You too.

[Nora] Bye.

[Hctor sighs]

Okay. I've got a better idea.

A friend of mine invited me

to her place for a little thing.

You can have a few drinks,

you can take it easy.

Blow off a little steam.

Plus, it's like research.

Exploring the world of the future.

[pop music playing]

I'm down.

-[Alondra] Down!

-What?

It's the new lingo. Get with it, Nora.

Nice work, uncle.

-[Hctor] Thank you.

-[Alondra] You coming?

[sighs] Oh.

I guess I'm down too.

-Yes!

-Cool. We're on.

[dance music playing over speakers]

Hey, whatever you do,

try not to make it weird, okay?

We don't want to clue anyone in

that you come from the '60s.

Be cool!

-Alondra!

-Hey there.

-I thought you wouldn't make it.

-Yet here I am.

Where'd you get the old farts?

[Alondra] My aunt and uncle.

They're Mennonites.

No way.

Sure, I guess they make cheese all day,

and when they leave the village

everything seems pretty weird to them.

[laughs nervously]

-Shall we?

-Yeah, sure.

[record scratching]

[R&B music playing over speakers]

[woman singing in Spanish]

Paloma?

No. My name is Nora.

How are you doing?

Mm, very well, thank you.

[girl giggles]

Oh! You sl*t. You're busted.

No way.

That dude doesn't know

his a*s from his elbow.

-Guess who I went out with.

-With who, you tr*mp?

[girl] Pablo.

The dude you screwed

in the bathroom at the concert?

What happened with Denise?

That b*tch has no clue what she wants.

I can't tell if she is into me for real

or if I'm just her backup.

Make up your mind, babe. Male or female?

I don't go by gender, I go by vibe.

I have no preference.

Sure, I feel the same way.

[laughs]

And what do you say?

You have a preference?

Me?

I, uh

What?

-Ah!

-Ah!

-We're just kidding!

-We got you! Drink up!

Your health.

[both] Chug! Chug! Chug!

[partygoers] Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug!

[all cheer]

-[laughing]

-[Nora] Mm!

[laughs nervously]

[partygoers cheering]

[electronic music playing over speakers]

[woman singing in Spanish]

[Nora] Look, look.

See how they're dancing together?

[Alondra] Huh?

[Alondra gasps]

Is that how you dance too?

-Depending on the song.

-No, don't dance like that, Alondra. No.

-Why not?

-No!

[both laugh]

Oh, it's just everything

has changed so much.

Back in my day,

a girl never went alone to a social event.

You always had to have a chaperone.

Sometimes your father,

or sometimes a brother.

A woman had to be accompanied.

Without exception.

You see those girls?

Drinking shots, smoking cigarettes.

Uh-uh. And they don't have preferences.

Well

[laughs]

Look at them, look at them.

[electronic dance music

playing over speakers]

They seem so happy.

And they came by themselves.

No, Aunt, not by themselves.

They came together.

-[R&B music playing over speakers]

-[man singing in Spanish]

[Nora] Hctor.

I can't stop thinking.

It's possible we'll never

get back to the past.

Of course we'll get back.

I know it.

And when we do,

and we return to the exact same point

in time and space that we came from,

we'll find everything just like it was.

I'm sure of this

because it's what our love is like.

A force in the past.

A force in the future.

It's

omnipresent.

It's all around us.

At this point, you're supposed to say,

"Shut up and kiss me, you fool."

But you're not talking, Nora.

-It's omnipresent.

-[Hctor] Yes?

Signals going everywhere

like the Internet, Hctor!

It's the only thing that's changed.

[both] Wave after wave

at a frequency of 5 gigahertz.

And so all those signals

are interfering with

-The machine. Of course.

-The machine!

-Now shut up and give me a kiss, you fool.

-Okay! Mm!

Mm.

Without question, that's the right

course of action in this case.

Doctor, what's the word

you used for the, uh?

-Signal inhibitors.

-[Nora] Signal inhibitors.

[woman] The mechatronics engineers

are working on them.

Wow, Doctor, thanks for the reminder

of why I love the field of physics.

Your ability to adapt to new variables

is the difference between talent

and, well genius.

[Nora chuckles]

[Julia] All right, it's time for me to go.

All hands on deck.

Keep up the wonderful work.

And, Doctor, let me know

when the machine is back in working order.

By all means, Julia. Thank you.

[man 1] Well, let's keep pushing

the mechatronics, people.

Doctor, can you help me

get the batteries, please?

-[man 2] Sure, Doctor.

-[Alondra] I have to go to class. Later.

-Goodbye. See you later.

-Thanks. Bye.

-[Alondra] Bye.

-Thanks a lot.

[inhales sharply]

[sighs]

[Nora] What's wrong?

[Hctor breathes deeply]

[computers chiming]

You know I'm proud

of how brilliant you are, right?

[machinery whirring]

But I feel left out.

It's as if

all of this is your achievement,

and I just happen

to be your assistant, you know?

Hctor

that could be the way they think about us,

but it doesn't matter.

All this

is both of us.

I know.

[poignant, pensive music playing]

-[button clicking]

-[machinery beeping]

Nora.

The portal is closing.

[ominous music playing]

I really hope the engineers

get somewhere soon with the inhibitors.

Those folks in mechatronics

know what they're doing.

I'm sure they'll finish them

today or tomorrow.

I hope so.

Hey. What about this guy?

For what? Hmm?

[Alondra] Look.

Here, you check out the guy,

and if you don't like what you see,

you swipe to the next one.

-[Nora] Ah.

-[Alondra] And the next one, and the next.

-And so on.

-[Nora] Huh.

Groovy.

[Alondra laughs]

Is that how people get married these days?

No. Get married? No.

And what's so bad about marriage?

For one, in your career, you might end up

sacrificing your ambitions

for the sake of the other person.

Or people, if you have kids.

Maybe, but being married

also has its advantages.

-Mm.

-There's companionship.

There's security.

There's stability.

Not to mention,

being married means you get to

you-know-what.

[both laugh]

Granted, but come on.

You-know-what happens all the time

outside of marriage, you know?

Oh no, maybe, yeah, sure.

It's possible.

-Sure, if you're into that, but not--

-Whew!

It's what I'm into, all right.

Sweetheart!

You mean that?

But you're always so well-behaved.

You wear glasses.

Auntie, come on!

All that good-girl stuff is over now.

You don't have to worry about it anymore.

Besides, you don't screw just when

you want to get pregnant, Aunt Nora.

You do it when you want to have fun.

Sure. Sure, I know that.

I guess.

That's groovy.

Okay. I want you to tell me something.

Be totally honest

and come right out with it.

Let's have it.

-Um, do you masturbate?

-[quirky music playing]

-What?

-Hurry up.

-Spit it out.

-You can't ask me that question.

-No way, forget it. Are you kidding?

-Huh?

Come on, what?

Did your palms get all hairy?

Alondra! No!

Auntie

That's not a topic of polite conversation.

-You're not even able to say the word.

-No, of course not. No.

No, thank you, no.

No.

I'm gonna take you to a sex shop.

[buzzing]

[Hctor laughs]

[Hctor] Holy moly!

Oh!

[buzzing stops]

Nora, have you tried this toothbrush

that works with electricity?

It's one of my favorite things.

[mischievous music playing]

Nora, your beauty is like

a rainbow of color refracting from a

No, it's more like the implosion--

Implosion of a quasar in

-[Nora] Hctor.

-Or

You like it, or not?

[seductive music playing]

[whispering] I love it.

[giggles]

Wait, hold on a minute.

[music fades]

Look what I bought.

You bought condoms?

Not regular condoms.

These condoms

come with a ring that vibrates.

And this is a vibrator

that you can control and I can wear.

-Hmm.

-I love this one.

Delay condom.

Why-- Why would you buy a condom

that delays the man's cl*max?

Well, isn't it obvious, Hctor?

[mischievous sting plays]

[sighs] Was Alondra there

when you bought all of this?

Huh?

She was.

Well, it was her idea

to go to the sex shop.

You mean a house of prostitution?

A house of prostitution?

No.

It's just a store.

Same place

[seductive music resumes]

where I bought this for you.

Why would you discuss details of our

intimate life with anyone but me, Nora?

How are you, Nora?

How are you doing?

[sighs]

Fine.

I guess.

And what do you think

of this world of the future?

[Nora] Mm

The advances in science are overwhelming.

The technology is incredibly specialized.

It just blows me away.

Let's sit for a minute.

No, I'm not asking your opinion

on all things scientific.

I want to know

how you're doing as a woman.

Oh.

[sighs]

You know, I was so accustomed

to the role we were given,

that I'm not sure

if I can understand the new one.

-Yes, it must be difficult.

-Mm.

But these times are so much better

than the '60s for women,

and for women scientists.

[sighs]

Hmm.

I've been thinking.

I can see that your mind is so active,

always working.

I propose

that you present something

at a conference tomorrow.

-A conference?

-Mm-hmm.

But what about the plan

to keep a real tight lid

on all the stuff to do with time travel?

No need to mention

where or when you come from.

What I want is that you talk

about your research,

that you share with us

your amazing intellect.

Oh, that would be a real honor.

I'd have to check with Hctor

if he's willing to present something.

Well, in this instance,

the conference is only soliciting

your participation.

Not that of Hctor.

[laughs] It's just that

this is a conference

that's happening for 8M.

Oh.

But at 8:00 a.m., not many people

will show because it's pretty early.

No, Nora, the 8th of March.

That's International Women's Day.

[laughs]

So there's an International Women's Day?

There is one now.

No, but

Okay.

But what could I possibly say

to these women, Julia?

-[laughs]

-I mean

I am literally

the voice of-of-of the past.

No, Nora.

This may be a bit difficult

to explain and understand,

but you are the voice of the future.

[smooth jazz music playing]

[door opens]

I saw Julia at the university

and she was telling me about a conference.

A conference?

[Nora] Mm-hmm.

To talk about our invention?

The top secret one?

No, no.

It's to present our theory.

Sounds like a bad idea.

I'm not into it, okay?

[Nora] Sure, that's okay.

The invitation was only meant for me.

Only meant for you?

Mm. She says the faculty

has organized this event

to celebrate 8M, March the 8th.

International Women's Day.

[chuckles softly]

International Women's Day?

Mm-hmm.

And when is the international day for men?

Alondra says all

the other days of the year

are the international days for men.

[scoffs]

Nora, haven't you noticed?

You haven't noticed how they look at me

as if I'm only your assistant?

No, I've never said

anything of the sort, no.

Come to think of it, I wouldn't know,

since I never got to have an assistant.

Well, that wasn't because of me.

But here and now,

you're not standing up for me, Nora.

Standing up for you?

Oh, if it's really bugging you,

why not make an effort and tell Julia

to invite you to the conference?

That's what I had to do back in our day.

That's precisely my point, Nora.

Our perspective is

different.

Their eyes see something else, you know?

Well, maybe it's a good idea.

To try to see what they see.

Yeah, it's no surprise

that you view it that way.

But you're getting influenced

because the situation benefits you.

Letting our eyes get used to this world

would be a mistake.

Because as soon as we're back in the '60s

we won't be able to see clearly.

Hctor, now more than ever

I'm seeing everything with total clarity.

[car horn blaring distantly]

[music fades]

[applause]

-[clears throat]

-[feedback squeals]

Good afternoon.

I'd like to say thank you

to the Faculty of Sciences

for helping me

to organize this colloquium,

called "Women Transforming Physics,"

in celebration

of International Women's Day.

I'm proud to present to you today

distinguished physicist,

Dr. Nora Cervantes,

who has traveled

a great distance to present to us

some important discoveries

from her research.

Welcome, Doctor.

[applause]

I'd like to say a little something.

A couple of words, Julia, if I may.

[Alondra] Wait, why's he doing this?

Good, uh-- Good afternoon to everyone.

I would like to help celebrate

International Women's Day

with some thoughts for all women.

Be lovable

but not available.

Be respectable, but not arrogant.

Laugh, but don't cackle.

Look around, but demurely.

Be tender, but not compliant.

Be cheerful, but not frivolous.

Talk, but with discretion.

Be a woman

but not a puppet.

Best wishes, little ladies.

[scattered applause]

[indistinct murmuring]

-Thank you.

-[loud applause]

[woman shouts and whoops]

Many thanks.

So, well, time, as we know,

never stops moving.

When they founded the Institute of Physics

around about 1938 or so,

this auditorium didn't exist yet.

Where a grove of maples stood,

now there's a gymnasium.

And probably in the course of time,

this will vanish in its turn

because everything is in constant flux.

And science is no exception.

I say this by way of introduction

to a theory that, mm

That I've been working on

for almost 20 years.

Three reformulations of equations

developed by Einstein.

This was a collaboration

with my colleague, my husband,

Dr. Hctor Esquivel.

[sparse applause]

[man coughs]

So together,

we made the discovery, or the observation,

that in the last few decades,

all of us in physics have overlooked

four serious problems

in the equations published by Einstein.

Tell them about the, uh,

formation of tachyons.

What?

If you don't explain the role of tachyons,

no one is going

to follow your lecture, Nora.

-[audience murmuring]

-[Nora] Oh. Right.

Okay, so all this is connected

to what we describe as the--

The emission of tachyons.

Yes, and if I may jump in, Doctor.

I'd like to provide a quick overview

of what we mean by a tachyon.

It's an extraordinary and elusive particle

that can travel at speeds

approaching or even exceeding

the speed of light.

Yes, uh, precisely what I was

just about to explain.

Uh

[sighs]

Why don't you let me handle this?

I should explain this part,

don't you think?

Hctor, please stop jumping ahead

of what I'm about to say.

-Hmm?

-I'm the expert on tachyons.

Aren't I, Nora? Huh?

If I don't explain it,

people won't understand a thing.

Hctor, I don't need any help from you.

Back off, will you?

[dramatic music playing]

[woman 1] But he--

He's messing up everything.

Women, right?

[woman 2] Wow. What?

[audience murmuring]

Women.

[woman 3]

I can't believe he just said that.

On the topic of women,

I'm so very grateful

as both a woman and a scientist

to have the support and guidance

of an amazing woman,

our dean, Dr. Julia Villalba,

who has invited me here

on this wonderful occasion.

Speculations on the structure

Excuse me, Doctor?

Hi. I'm Professor Cosso.

Pleased to meet you.

Dr. Esquivel. H-- Hctor. A pleasure.

-Don't tell me they kicked you out?

-Of course they didn't.

I totally get your position here.

Okay, whatever you say.

The reverse sexism of the dean

is driving us all crazy around here.

-For instance, that.

-[ominous music playing]

Why isn't your name there?

Where's your photo?

That just isn't right, huh?

It's not cool.

Where's the credit you deserve?

I couldn't care less.

Hold up. What the hell are you doing?

You can't smoke here.

Oh, right.

Us guys are getting a beer. Want to come?

I'm in.

[Nora] Thus, it opens the possibility

of traveling to another time.

Thank you for your attention.

[cheering and applauding]

[music crescendos]

[Nora sighs]

[Julia sighs]

[girl] Doctor, your talk was amazing.

Thank you very much.

[Rebequita] Oh.

That was so exciting, Auntie Nora.

Lots of it went right over my head,

but even I could see

that you really know your stuff.

[laughs]

Well, I had trouble understanding

some of what happened in there too.

[Nora sighs]

What's happened to Hctor, though?

[singing "Acompame"]

-Where'd you get that one from?

-It's all over the radio.

-[all laugh]

-[man] Yeah, maybe 50 years ago.

You know what I think?

In the old days, things were

fine.

Hmm.

The old days were when

everyone knew who they were.

Don't get me wrong, okay?

I totally agree that there should

be more opportunities for women.

Make things equal for everyone? Fine.

But I don't accept how nowadays,

guys like us are the f*cking devil.

-[Cosso] I hear you.

-We can't even pat them on the shoulder.

Look at how these days a man

is expected to feel bad and embarrassed

for paying a woman a compliment.

The devil, man!

-Mm-hmm.

-[ominous music playing]

Words of wisdom from Dr. Esquivel.

[laughs]

-Whoo-hoo!

-[man] Yes, sir.

[man laughing]

-Cheers.

-[Cosso] Cheers, Doctor.

Cheers.

[Julia] Your lecture

was an absolute triumph.

You won over even the most hardheaded.

Even the skeptics.

Thank you so much, Julia.

Here's an idea.

The faculty is reorganizing

the Physics Department management.

Mm-hmm.

Therefore, we would like

to propose that you dedicate

some of your time

to catching up with things

and learning about all the ways

the university has changed

so that when the time comes,

we can nominate you

to be the Director of Physics

in the Faculty of Sciences.

[gasps] Oh my God.

We know your value here, Nora.

Please.

We need you to stay with us.

[footsteps approaching]

And you're considering it?

Do you feel you have more

to offer to the world of today?

[Nora sighs]

Or maybe the world of today

has more to offer you, Auntie?

-[sighs]

-[glasses clink]

I don't know.

What I do know is that I

I have a duty to go back for my sister.

I have to prevent that accident.

[puts glass down]

Nora.

What happened to my mom wasn't your fault.

[poignant music playing]

Everything would have been different

if you had been there.

Maybe yes, but maybe no.

She might have died the next day

for some other reason.

You should live for yourself, not others.

People die, Nora.

You'll have time

to come to terms with that.

I accepted my mother's passing away

many years ago, and Alondra did the same.

Now we are at peace with our story.

[tense, pensive music playing]

[sighs]

[door opens]

Where have you been all this time?

Why didn't you answer your cell phone?

Because I didn't hear it.

Well, my talk went very well.

That is, in case you're interested.

Of course your talk went well.

You're a woman on the move

in the year 2025.

What do you mean by that?

-That I don't deserve to be successful?

-Not at all.

Of course you deserve to be successful.

But right now,

you're confused, Nora.

From all of the applause for the doctor!

-No?

-No, no, no. It's not like that.

No.

What's happening is--

What's happening? What's happening?

What's happening is I am getting

the f*ck out of here with my machine.

-Your machine?

-My machine. My machine!

My machine.

Who was it who came to you and said,

"I've solved one of the paradoxes

in time theory"?

Which would have had

absolutely no relevance

if I hadn't done all that research

on Einstein's equations first.

What? You mean what you published

only after I persuaded the journal editor

to consider it?

So I owe everything to you, is that it?

And you must be delighted.

Very proud to be a member

of your brotherhood of

chauvinist mediocrities.

Yeah, sure. I'm dying to get out of here

and be with my fellow chauvinists

and mediocrities, where I belong.

[both scoff]

Well, okay, then.

If you're so sick of this,

of our collaboration,

of us too,

then what the hell

are we even doing together?

You go. I'm staying here.

As you wish.

[music turns poignant]

[man and woman singing in Spanish]

[Hctor] We finally got the inhibitors.

[music fades]

This thing is almost ready

to take us home.

Why did you say that garbage?

What garbage?

This.

-But I don't accept how nowadays

-This garbage.

guys like us are the f*cking devil.

Yeah, turn it off.

I know exactly what I said.

Turn that thing off.

I was there.

And you meant what you said?

All those things?

Yes, Nora. Mm.

Why shouldn't I?

Everything I said there,

everything I said back in my time

was what made me a good man.

But you said so yourself.

Now their eyes see different things,

their ears hear different things.

And you?

You believe it too, don't you?

You think I'm some macho man?

A misogynist? Seriously?

A stalker? Huh?

-No.

-Huh?

-No, no.

-Huh?

-[sighs]

-Nora, you know me.

You know me inside out. You--

You saw how in my own time

I was a good man.

I was attentive, gallant,

respectful, loving, affectionate.

And if not for all those things,

would you have fallen for me?

[sighs]

Okay.

That's what made me fall in love with you.

But right now

we're victims of our times, Hctor.

[computers chirping]

[chirping]

We're going to lose the portal, Nora.

[meter readings crackling]

I'm sorry.

I was wrong.

Nora, let's go home.

["Detenme" by Reik playing]

I'm not going back, Hctor.

Nora.

["Detenme" by Reik continues]

[Julia sighs]

Oh!

[song fades]

The comments are very negative.

And as a public institution,

we have an obligation to repudiate

any views that are misogynist or

patriarchal.

I think we're being unfair to Hctor.

Those unfortunate comments of his

weren't at all intended to offend anyone.

It's just that he was raised

in other times.

In our times, Julia. You know that.

Sure. I know that.

Because I know where you come from.

But no one else does.

These times have really

changed us.

We're not the same anymore.

[students chattering indistinctly]

[Alondra] Catch you later. Bye.

Auntie!

-Hi, sweetie.

-Hi.

[Nora] Mm.

I've been thinking about you two.

How are you?

Well

I think I'm getting more adapted

to the values of the present, huh?

Uh, what do you mean?

It's like you say.

Matrimony is now

an outdated concept.

Uh, yes.

I said that.

But it doesn't have to be true

in your case, Auntie.

You know, for many years

I was happy with Hctor.

Very happy.

Yeah. Of course.

I'm sure in your time, Hctor was amazing.

More than amazing.

[sighs]

Hctor is the love of my life.

[computers chiming]

Oh no.

[poignant music playing]

No.

[breathing heavily]

No, no. Hctor. No, no, no.

[whimpers]

[Hctor] My love.

We've spent our whole lives

trying to understand time.

[buttons beeping]

We thought we'd found a way

to control time, but

our times found a way to catch up to us.

[sighs]

Together,

we stretched the boundaries of science

and tested the limits of our love.

Oh. Oh.

[Hctor] And nothing can take away

what you and I have accomplished.

[machinery powering up]

[clicking and beeping]

Now, I see how free you are.

How successful you can be

in this time you are making your own.

You are destined for great things,

far beyond what you have imagined.

And that's why,

even though it causes me great pain,

I can't let a man who is stuck in the past

stand in the way of your future.

[breathing heavily]

[exhales sharply]

[grunts]

[wistful music playing]

[shaky breathing]

Goodbye, Nora.

Nora

[crying]

I'll keep in my heart every "I love you,"

every song we danced to

and every time you told me

to shut up and give you a kiss.

Yours forever,

Hctor.

[wistful music continuous]

What's wrong?

Are you okay?

Hctor went back.

What?

[sobs]

[music fades]

[sirens blaring distantly]

[computerized voice]

Imaginary mass is a hypothetical concept

in mathematics and physics.

It arises when we take

the square root of a particle

with a negative mass.

This concept is often associated

with tachyons

Give me a minute, please.

Where is the machine?

-Did he take it?

-["Rocket Man" by Elton John playing]

She packed my bags last night

Pre-flight

[Nora] The portal has closed, Julia.

Zero hour, 9:00 a.m.

I'll have to wait for 30 years.

And I'm gonna be high

I don't know what I'm gonna do.

As a kite by then

Nora.

I miss the Earth so much

I miss my wife

You have been the inspiration of my life.

And he he was yours.

Now it's your turn.

This is your moment.

[exhales]

You have to live it.

And I think it's gonna be

A long, long time

Till touchdown

Brings me 'round again to find

I'm not the man

They think I am at home

Oh, no, no, no

I'm a rocket man

Rocket man

Burning out his fuse up here alone

And I think it's gonna be

A long, long time

Till touchdown

Brings me 'round again to find

I'm not the man

They think I am at home

Oh, no, no, no

I'm a rocket man

Rocket man

Burning out his fuse up here alone

[man] If you were

to sum it up in one sentence,

what would it be, Dr. Cervantes?

[Nora] I'd say we are time.

QUANTUM PHYSICS

COULD REDEFINE TIME

[echoing] We are time

I'd say we are time

[announcer] The National Science Award

goes to Dr. Nora Cervantes.

[woman 1] Dr. Nora Cervantes.

[woman 2] It's not enough

to call you Woman of the Year.

I would say of the decade, of the century.

And there's no one there to raise them

[woman 3 speaking French]

[man speaking Japanese]

[audience applauding]

And all the science

I don't understand

[Nora] I had a great love,

but we lived in different times.

My job five days a week

A rocket man

A rocket man

-[song fades]

-[birds singing and chirping]

[footsteps approaching]

Nora!

Nora, what did you do?

[inhales sharply]

I did what my heart told me to.

I made the most of these years.

I lived my life.

And when the time came

I built my machine.

And I came to find you.

To spend the rest of my life with you.

[laughs]

Iodine.

Livermorium.

[lips smack]

Uranium.

[chuckles]

So do I.

[whimpers]

I love you too.

["Acompame" by Roco Drcal playing]

[song ends]
