Nome and the iditarod
go together like brothers
and I wanna tell you
a little history
about how the iditarod starts.
In December of 1924
nome is beset
by a diphtheria epidemic
and all the serum
had gone bad.
How do you get a serum
into nome?
No ships come in here
it's winter,
no airplane's come in here,
the weather's too bad,
no roads in here at all,
so they got some serum
into fairbanks
and they sled-dogged
it in here.
Went 675 miles.
A hundred and fifty dogs.
The musher that brought
the serum into nome
was gunnar kaasen
and his lead dog balto,
so balto is famous.
Balto is the hero.
Wrong.

just because you end the race
doesn't mean you were
the best part of the race.
You might not even the fastest
leg of the race,
you might've been
the laziest dog in the race
and we're just
hanging around nome
and did that last 50 mile.
There were other dogs
that went further and faster.
The real unsung hero...
Was leonhard seppala
and his lead dog togo.

they did 260 miles
compared to balto's 50 miles.
They are the heroes
of the iditarod.
