Never in the entire state
of alaska have I seen anybody

With a driveway this long
with so many dead trees.

About two or three times

I have to do

cutting one of these trees

of the wilderness.

Molly's water broke,
and there was no family,

No neighbors, and no doctor.

It ended up in an emergency
bush flight to the yukon,

Namely whitehorse.

The point?

That little baby now
is living proof

That if you live
at the end of the road anywhere,

You better be prepared.

Narrator: the test is over,
and pattie leaves jay

To help matt and marty
clear the road.

All of our trucks
look like crushed tin cans.

The crums'
dire lack of livestock.

And they're
a really good source of food.

I'm thinking some kind
of structure

out of logs.

Oh, okay.

There are fallen trees
all over the homestead.

Misty plans to turn them
into a cabin-style pigpen.

She'll add insulation,
a predator-proof door,

And a ring
of electric fence.

First, misty shows pattie
how to set up a chainsaw mill.

This is one of the world's
most amazing tools

That actually can make usable
lumber out of raw logs.

Pattie: awesome.

[ Chainsaw revs ]

The bracket
holds the saw in place

So it cuts
perfectly straight lumber.

I actually really like
the chainsaw,

And as long as you're
really aware, use common sense,

You're going to be fine.

Yeah, I'm still afraid
of that.

It's like my nemesis.

Misty:
I grew up around chainsaws.

My dad cut my umbilical cord
with a chainsaw.

And despite all of my years
of experience,

I still have
a really healthy fear of them.

So I totally get
where pattie's coming from.

She needs help
overcoming this fear.

Narrator: raising pigs
won't pay off for months,

So matt wants to find
an immediate food solution.

Jay shot a deer from
the luxury of his porch once,

But he's never been hunting
in the mountains.

Matt: we're going to do
a little bit of hiking.

-Okay.
-So I want you to be prepared.

I mean, how do you feel
about that?

I'm going to go slow,
but I can keep going.

We're going to do things
at your pace.

All right. Let's go.

Matt: it's really hard to work
with somebody

That has such a tough illness.

I think it's a good time
to get him out on a hunt

And sort of,

I don't know,
test his boundaries

And see what
he's actually capable of.

Narrator: fall is
big game season in montana,

And jay has the opportunity
to bag an elk.

[ Elk bugles ]

Bulls weigh 700 pounds,

And their meat
is higher in protein

Than any store-bought
chicken or beef.

You put an elk in the freezer,
I mean, that's something

That can feed you
for the entire winter.

Got some deer tracks.

They're pretty recent.

There's definitely
a lot of wildlife here.

That's good.
It is.

Let's go find them.

Narrator: with game spread
over 4,000 acres of mountain,

The hunters have
a long hike ahead.

Jay:
it's been a good morning.

I'm an old, out of shape guy.

We covered a lot of miles.

But that's why
it's called "hunting."

If it was "shopping,"
I could just go buy me an elk.

Narrator:
the ponderosa pine has built
hundreds of thousands of farms

Since the 1860s,

But beetle infestation
is wiping it out,

And marty has only 6 days

To clear
hundreds of dead trees

From the crums'


In alaska,
cutters they call them,

Guys that cut down big trees,
work in pairs.

There's a reason.

One of them is safety.

This is the most dangerous thing
I could do on any homestead --

Work day in and day out alone

Focusing on danger trees.

[ Chainsaw revs ]

This is
when stuff goes wrong.

It starts to move,
anything that's dead

And weak snaps out,

Comes down here
and kills the cutter.

[ Indistinct shouting ]

with an old logger's trick.

This bites down, it will rock it
and hopefully pitch it

over 50 rotten trees.

if I ever get divorced,

and you can have the truck,

But I'm getting away
with my chainsaw.

shatters the homestead.

I don't know

Matt: I really don't know
how we can help these people.

This is how I was taught.

And using the weight of the saw

This is the dangerous thing

the inside of my mouth.

It was a surreal deal
that actually scared

The bejesus out of me.

Marty: this one is dangerous.
Stand back!

-That looks dangerous.
-Yeah.

This one fell back on me,
and it's hung up.

So that's going to come sh**ting
down here and k*ll somebody.

But I need save
the only saw

That I brought
to this homestead.

-All right.
-Grab the rope, please.

Tie it onto the handle,
and get out of the way.

As soon as -- matt, look,
when I pull on the chain,

Hopefully the tree comes off
the stump and falls,

You can pull the saw out of the
way and it doesn't get crushed.

That's my plan.

my dad loves chainsaws.

I mean, I'm sure that
he dreams one day

Of having chainsaws for arms.

We're going for it.

To me this is going nearly
too far to the extreme.

That was insane.
