Nick and his mom have been talking about going camping.

I've never been camping before, have you?

I even have my own backpack, take a look.

I'm all ready for camping.

- Me too.

I can't wait to get out in the forest

and see a lion or a tiger or a bear, oh my.

- Mom.

- M.A.R.T.I.E, Dooley, Nick's going camping tomorrow

with his class from school.

- And there won't be lions or tigers,

maybe a raccoon or a deer.

- Oh, deer are nice.

- I wanted to go too,

but the trip was only for the older kids.

- Oh.

- Hey, I've got an idea,

maybe we can all go camping

and enjoy the great outdoors.

(children cheering)

Right here in our backyard.

- Oh, cosmic comets!

The backyard is outdoors,

we can just pretend we're going on a camping trip

into the woods.

Okay.

What exactly happens when you're camping?

- Camping is like having a sleepover with nature.

- There are three rules to follow when you're camping.

Be prepared, be safe, and always leave nature

the way you found it.

- And we need to be prepared

by having warm clothes in case it's cold,

and a bathing suit for swimming.

- Huh?

I didn't pack a bathing suit.

- We need water, food, and flashlights.

- Don't forget sunblock and bug spray for mosquitoes.

- I don't have to worry about that.

Bug proof metal, see?

- I have my camera, my sleeping bag,

and my first aid kid.

- Oh, melting meteors,

I don't think we can go camping.

I didn't pack a tent.

- We'll figure that out, Dooley.

Now let's get ready for a great outdoor adventure,

a pretend camping trip.

- M.A.R.T.I.E wanted to see some wild animals,

so I'm making him a tiger mask just for fun.

- I made a bear. (roars)

- Oh my, those are some really wild animals.

You know, my sister and I go camping in the woods near here.

I've seen foxes, jack rabbits, and even bats.

- Bats, Mrs. Z?

Cool.

- Oh yes, you don't have to go far

to see some really wonderful creatures.

Creatures, now there's a word that begins

with our letter of the day.

- Oh, that's a C.

C is for camping.

We can see a lot of creatures when we're camping.

- C is for circle too.

We sit in a circle around the campfire.

- And when there's a campfire,

we need to be very-

- [All] Careful.

- Another C word.

- Well, I wonder what kind of creatures you'll see

on your trip.

he's part of nature, even if he lives in our backyard.

- Look, he poked its head out.

I think he likes us.

- The snail's shell reminds me of a space helmet.

I wish I had my camera to take a picture of him

to send back home.

- Should we keep on hiking

and see what else we can find?

I really wanted to get my camera from the spaceship.

- I know we're only pretending to be in the woods,

Even though we're camping in our own backyard,

being outdoors sure is great.

- You know what my favorite part of camping is?

Marshmallows, yum.

I mean, marshmallows sure are a popular camping snack.

- I'll put this in my bag.

My teacher says we should always leave nature

the way we found it.

- Nature, I truly Dooley do love being outside at night.

I was really hoping to see a real wild animal.

- All right, stand back everyone.

We want this fire to be raging for the campfire stories.

Even if it is just a pretend fire.

It's about the jungle with wild animals.

(child roars)

We really weren't prepared for our camping trip at all.

- Good thing we were just pretending.

- Yeah, we'll pretend to be more prepared next time.

Hi, everybody.

It's me, Dooley.

Ever since my ship landed here on Earth,

I've learned lots about your planet.

Today, M.A.R.T.I.E and I learned all about camping.

And we didn't even have to leave the backyard.

You need to be prepared to go camping,

that means bringing everything you need to be comfortable

and learning about the area you'll be camping in

so you can be safe.

Mrs. Z brought us the letter C

and played bug, bird, or beast with us.

I can hardly wait 'til we camp in the backyard again,

roasting marshmallows, and telling campfire stories.

Camping outdoors is truly Dooley a whole lot of fun.
