The Mysterious Wood.
The sun was shining in the sky.
It was a wonderful day to be out and
about, like the birds, who were flying
high among the clouds.
Patch was out too, walking happily
through the woods.
Along the way,Patch met his friends, the
little ants.
Hello, Patch. Where are you going?Hello
there, Tom. I'm just going for a walk in
the woods. These are lovely woods for a
walk, but sometimes you can hear funny
noises around here. They can make you
jump. Oh, really?What kind of
noises are they?What makes them?It's
difficult to describe, and we don't know
what makes them, but you'll probably hear
one soon. Well, we have to go now. Bye
bye. Patch was very puzzled,
but he decided to carry on with his walk.
Funny noises?Well, now I know about them,
they won't make me jump.
Uh What was that?A stench voice?
Oh, dear. Now it's going to take me ages
to get right way up again.
I feel all dizzy.
On the other side of the woods, Patch was
going to find his friend Connie.
Connie, it's me, Patch. And Connie came
out of her house, looking very happy.
Hey, Patch, why don't we go and play in
those woods where the old oak trees grow?
But there are funny noises there. What
kind of noise is Patch? Is it the birds
singing or animals playing?Well, I don't
know what kind of noise it was and I
don't know what was making it. I just
heard the funny sound and it gave me a
big surprise.
Connie said there must be an explanation,
so she and Patch set out for the woods to
find out what was making the funnysounds.
This is where I was when I heard the
sound cutting. Oh look, something just
popped into the ground. What can it be?
Ooh Hello you two.
Hey, have you heard those funny sounds
around here?No Hedgie, I haven't
heard anything.
I'm upside down again.
You're right, Patch, that sound is very
funny.
But even so, something must be making
them. Why don't we try and find out what
it is?I'd like to know what's making the
noise, Connie, but how are we going to do
it?Well, we'll just have to
investigate.
Some animals were walking in the fields.
Some were eating their dinner, and some
were resting among the flowers. But
Connie and her friend Patch were busy
investigating. Just then, they heard a
sound coming from a bush. Ohh
Is that the sound he heard in the woods?
What's making it?Hello?Is anybody there?
It was Spoot, and they'd woken him up.
Oh, Connie, what did you wake me up for?I
was having such a lovely nap.
I only wake up when my alarm clock goes
off. I'm sorry, Scoot.
There's a funny sound in the woods and we
want to know what's making it. Ohh
Just then, something very strange
happened. It was a rock moving around on
its own. Oh my golly! Under the rock! Is
that the same sound?
I don't think so, but let's have a look.
Thank you for moving that rock, Connie. I
was stuck underneath and it was moving
around everywhere I went. Hello there,
Todd. We're investigating a funny sound.
Have you heard it?Oh
no, I never hear anything like that,
Connie. It's very quiet underground.
Oh well, we'll just have to keep looking.
Why don't you go look by the lake? They
say you can hear lots of strange noises
down there.
Connie followed Todd's advice, and she
and Patch went down to the lake. Hello,
Mr. Frog. We want
to know what's making a funny sound. Have
you heard any noises around here?Well,
now you've come to mention it, I've been
hearing some very funny noises in the
reed beds. Listen, can you hear it?
It's a funny sound, but I don't think
it's the same one as the one we heard in
the woods. You're right, but this is lots
of fun. Let's find out what's making that
noise.
Connie looked among the reeds, when all
of a sudden... It was her
friend Spike the spider. Hello there,
Connie. Did I give you a surprise?We
heard a funny noise coming from the reeds
and we wondered what it was. Oh, that's
just me, Connie. I'm very busy at the
moment, you see, building a new web to
live in, and when I work, I like to
whistle a little tune. What about the
sound in the woods? We still haven't found
out what it is. Well, you two are very
clever. Don't give up. If you keep on
looking, you'll find the answer. OK.
So Patch and Connie kept on
investigating. They really wanted to get
to the bottom of the mystery. But
although they looked everywhere, they
couldn't find what was making the noises.
Connie, it's late and I'm hungry. Let's
go home.
Is it Patch? There it is. What is a bunny
sound?I don't know, Connie. We'll just
have to keep on looking tomorrow, I
suppose.
Connie and Patch were sad because they
hadn't solved the mystery.
Then Connie saw some leaves being blown
by the wind. She
smiled happily. She'd found the answer.
That's what it is. I know what's making
that noise. It's the sound of the wind as
it whistles through the trees.
Ohh Well done, Connie. I couldn't have
done it without you, Patch. It took a
long time, but we didn't give up, and we
solved the mystery. It's the wind.
Connie had had a very tiring day. And
she was pleased to get back home to her
mummy and daddy. She went to sleep
feeling very happy, listening to the
beautiful sound of the wind in the
trees.
Grandma makes jam.
It was a beautiful day, and the birds
were flying happily in the sky. The
ants were carrying food to their nests,
and crickets and beetles were playing in
the meadow.
Meanwhile, Connie and Patch were walking
in the woods. The two friends stopped to
watch some little ants who are carrying a
little clay pot. Hello, Tom.
Hey, what are you doing? What's that
little pot you're carrying? We found it,
Connie. It's a jar of fruity stuff and
it's delicious. Oh, yummy. Could I
try some, please?Tom was a very
generous Ant, and he said he could have
as much as he liked.
Yum, yumWhat is it?
Well, we know it's very sweet and that it
tastes of fruit, but we don't know what
it's called or how it's made. We could
go and ask my grandma. Oh
yes, your grandma sure to know what itis.
Patch and Connie went to visit Connie's
grandma. They asked her what the sweet
fruity stuff could be.
It sounds to me as if thosehad found some
jam. Oh, so it was jam!
And do you know how to make it?Of course,
it's quite simple. You collect lots of
fruit and then cook it with sugar. Ooh,
do you think you could show us how to
make it, Grandma?Of course
I could, but first you'll have to go to
the woods and find some fruit. Patch
and Connie were very excited. They
couldn't wait to start making some
delicious jam. The birds
and the butterflies flew over the fields.
The little insects played in the woods,
and Patch and Connie started looking for
fruit.
There's no fruit here.
Then we'll have to look somewhere else.
Patch and Connie looked everywhere, but
they couldn't find any fruit. They
both felt sad.
If we don't find any fruit, we won't be
able to make any tasty jam.
Just then, a pretty butterfly flew by.
Hey, Patch, maybe this butterfly knows
where we can find some fruit.
Hello, Mr. Butterfly. You fly all over
the woods. Do you know a place where we
can find some fruit?The
butterfly told them about a patch of
bushes where he'd seen all kinds of
fruit. Thank you so
much, Mr. Butterfly. You've been very
helpful. Bye bye. Patch and
Connie went happily on their way. They
were looking forward to picking the fruit
they needed to make the jam.
Collie stopped beside the bushes that the
butterfly had told them about. Come on,
Patch. The butterfly said these bushes
were covered in tasty fruit, so let's
pick as much as we can carry.
Collie and Patch started looking for
fruit, but they couldn't find any.
I think someone picked all the fruit that
was growing on this bush before we got
here. Oh no!
What a pity, Kuni! Now we won't be able
to make any jam.
Just then, Berta the Bee came flying by.
Hello you two, what's for Merta? We're
looking for fruit to make jam, but we
can't find any. I know where you can find
some delicious cherries. Oh,
where?WhereJust walk straight across the
meadow from here and you'll find them at
the edge of the woods. Oh, that's great.
Thanks for your help, Bertha. Bye-bye.
Patch and Connie crossed the meadows,
feeling very happy. Oh, Patch, just
think of all those delicious cherries.
But when they came to the cherry tree,
they were very disappointed. Well, this
is the cherry tree, but I can't see a
single cherry. I don't think
today's our day, Connie.
Hello, you two. What's the matter?
We wanted to pick some cherries to make
jam, but there aren't any. It's
very strange. That tree was covered in
cherries yesterday, but if you want, I
can show you where to find the sweetest
peaches you've ever tasted.
Oh, I love peaches!
Patch and Connie were very happy, and
they followed after the little squirrel,
looking forward to picking delicious
peaches. But when they came to the
peach tree, they found there was no fruit
left there either.
I just don't understand. This morning the
tree was covered in peaches. I think that
somebody must be going round eating every
bit of fruit in the woods. You'll never
be able to make any jam now.
And while the tortoise did his daily
exercises,Patch and Connie made their
way sadly back to Grandma's house.
Ohh Hey, what a nice surprise if it isn't
my old friends Connie and Patch. Hello,
Wally. How are you? We're looking for some
fruit. You don't know where we can find
some, do you?Of course I do. I can
give you as much fruit as you want. Oh,
thank you, Wally. And where can we find
it?It's just down the river.
What a surprise was in store for Connie
and Patch. A huge pile of fruit.
No wonder there was no fruit left in the
woods, Wally. You picked it all. Well, I
saw how all the ants were collecting
fruit for winter, and I thought I'd do
the same myself, so I picked all the
fruit I could. But Wally, you have to eat
fruit very soon after you pick it,
otherwise it goes off. Oh no!
Are you serious? So what am I going to do
with all this fruit now? We'll make jam.
Lots and lots of jam. Everybody was
very happy. They took all the fruit to
Grandma's house, and she made them into
delicious jam.
This jam is so tasty. Yes, it's
scrumptious. I'm so lucky. I think
that my granny must be the best cook in
the whole wide world. The three friends
ate lots and lots of jam that afternoon,
and still they had plenty left to keep
for the winter. For Patch and Connie,
it was the sweetest winter of their
lives.
The Wonderful World of Nature
It was a beautiful spring day.
All the animals were out in the meadow.
Some of them were eating, and some were
having fun. Mother Bird
was just showing her little ones how to
flap their wings and fly. When Connie
came walking by,
she walked happily through the fields,
until eventually,She met Belinda thegoat.
Hello, Belinda. Hello there, Connie. What
are you doing today?I'm looking for
my friend Patch, and when I find him
we're going to play a game, but I don't
know which game we're going to play.
I know what you could do. You could play
at finding out about your friends in the
woods. That game sounds like fun, but
how do you play?Think of a question, like
why do crickets have such long legs?
And the cricket who was passing by
answered, For jumping waves!
This game is lots of fun. I'm sure Patch
will love it. Bye-bye, Belinda!
Connie went to find Patch jumping along
just like a cricket.
Patch had been waiting, and he was very
glad to see her. Hello,
Patch. Do you want to play a game?Oh,
yes, Connie. I'd love to. Then
Connie told him all about Belinda's game.
Patch was very excited. He knew that they
were going to have lots of fun.
As they walked through the fields, Patch
and Connie met Timmy the Bear, who was
eating some tasty strawberries.
Yum yum
Hello there Timmy Hello there you two
Would you like some strawberries help
yourselves they're delicious Oh good
strawberries are my favourite food
Then Connie thought of a question Timmy
can I ask you a question? Why do bears
always eat so much food in the summer?
It's because we have to store up fat for
the winter. And what do you do when
winter comes? We sleep and sleep, and
all the fat we store means we don't have
to go out and look for food. Oh, but I
like going out to play in wintertime. Of
course you do, Patch. That's because
you're not a bear. That would be funny.
Patch the bear!
Now they knew why bears ate so much in
the summertime. Patch and Connie went on
their way, looking carefully at the
animals who lived nearby. Hello,
butterfly. Well, hello there, you
two. Ohh
Patch and Connie saw how the butterflies
used their beautiful wingsTo fly from
flower to flower,
they saw how snails carry their houses
around on their backs
and take shelter when the sun comes out.
Snails always prefer cloudy days.
They also saw that ants have little
feelers that are always busily feeling
the way. so the ant doesn't get lost.
They saw how caterpillars stretch out and
then squeeze together to move around, and
that their favourite food is leaves.
Patch and Connie went on their way,
feeling very pleased about all the things
they were finding out.
Isn't this game fun, Patch?Just think of
all the new things we've found out about
nature today. Yes, Connie, it's great,
but there's one thing I don't understand.
What's that, Patch?I'm sure we can find
the explanation. Well, I was thinking,
I've got a tail, but I don't know what
it's for. Oh, I don't
know what my tail is for either. We've
found out about everyone else, but not
about ourselves. Hello there,
you two, have you had a good time
learning about nature?
Yes, we've learned ever such a lot but
we're still puzzling over one thing Yes,
you see we've both got tails but we're
not really sure what they're for
I know what your tail is for, Patch
Really?What's that?Well, dogs have tails
so they can wag them to show when they're
feeling happy Oh yes, look,
Melinda's right Dogs also wag their
tails to show when they want to have fun
Oh, yes, that's true as well, Belinda.
And when they're sad, dogs let their
tails hang down. So that
means that your tail is for showing how
you're feeling. Hooray! Now I know why
I've got a tail! I'm so happy!
Just then, a fly flew by and sat
on Connie's back. Connie didn't like it
and she whisked it away. Oh,
wow! Hey, Connie, I think I know what
your tail is for, too. Oh well
done, Patch, so that's what it's for. I
think you've got a tail so you can brush
away the flies that land on your back.
Patch is right, Connie. That's exactly
what your tail is for, for chewing away
flies when they bother you.
It's true, look at that. I've got my very
own fly swatter for whenever I need it.
That night, as she went to sleep,
Connie thought how amazing it was that
nature had given us everything we need.
Nature is wonderful. Sweet dreams,
Connie.
