02x05 - The Circus / Chance and the Bird Bath / The Annual Bathtub Race

[Music]

it had been a hectic day

mom discovered that if you don't put

your purse in the usual place

it's really hard to find later

katie found out that even though the red

sneakers are her favorites

when they're too small they hurt

and orbee discovered that if you pick up

all the beads and put them in a bag with

a hole

it doesn't help much

reason everyone was rushing was that on

this day they were going to the circus

katie and orbee just couldn't wait

in the car mom told them about the

clowns

[Music]

dad told him about the tigers and

elephants

katie and orbee could hardly believe

that they could go to a place where all

these things could happen together

the head chuckled that's nothing there

are loads of surprises at the circus

when they arrived katie and orbee could

tell this was

an exciting place in front of them was a

huge

tent not a tent like the one in their

backyard but a tent that was

big enough for hundreds of people

katie worried that they didn't bring

their sleeping bag

mom laughed as she opened the door there

was no time for sleeping at the circus

as you can imagine the two friends were

a little bit confused

inside the big tent there was a man

selling balloons

orbee could barely see his face because

there were so many

or be snorkeled that he would love one

and mom agreed

[Music]

from their seats katie looked around the

tent there were so many people

everyone was talking pointing at the

three circles in the middle of the tent

the announcer told them that the show

was about to start

music played over speakers all of a

sudden clowns

elephants dogs and jugglers

people in pretty costumes people with

horses all rocked around the circle

well katie and orbee were both so busy

trying to find out

what they all were and what they did

that mum finally told them to sit back

and watch

soon they would see orbee pulled his

balloon up and down in his excitement

when the big parade was over obie

wondered if it was time to go

dad told him that the show hadn't really

started yet

just then a man all dressed up in a very

nice suit

walked out and stood in the center ring

as he was introducing the show

two clowns running one chasing the other

with a hose

the man called to the first clown to

stop and instead the other one with the

hose to hit

and the first clown came up behind him

and squirted him with his flower

katie and orbeez katie thought the

clowns were a lot like dad

and mom agreed

after the clowns people rode in on

horses with no saddles

they jumped through hoops from the

horse's back and they did cartwheels

and well as you can imagine orbeez

thought he might like to do that one day

mom said he'd be very good at it

[Applause]

then came some people who climbed up

wires

katie couldn't understand how they did

it

dad said they had to have very good

balance and special shoes

when they got to the top of the tent

there was a big trapeze

orbee asked katie to imagine that they

were up there

katie said no way it was too high

dad pointed out that trapeze artists had

to practice for years before they

performed

soon elephants came out

katie and orbee had never seen real

elephants and they looked terrific

music came onto the speakers and

suddenly the elephants were dancing

they did wonderful tricks katie thought

she might like to work with elephants

one day

dad said that was a good idea too as

long as they didn't step on your feet

next there was a group of acrobats who

climbed on each other to make a big

triangle

one jumped from a springboard to get on

top

[Applause]

katie thought it would be fun to try at

home

dad didn't think he could hold so many

people together

then came a long train of tigers

they had to do their act in a cage

because nobody wanted to find out if the

tigers were hungry

katie loved the tigers and wondered if

she was brave enough to work with them

dad said he wasn't

at the end of the circus mom brought

katie and orbee over to ride an elephant

when their turn came katie stood in the

ground away from the elephant

she looked way up to the top the

elephant was

really really big

katie told mom that she thought maybe

she'd just like to watch the ride

mom told her that she had a ticket she

could go if she wanted

but the point was katie didn't want to

go so

orbee got two turns and loved it

he insisted on taking his yellow balloon

with him

on the second turn orbee got so excited

about the ride that he let the balloon

go

and it drifted up up up to the top of

the tent

mom was worried that he would be upset

about losing the balloon but orbee told

her

he had left a pretty yellow decoration

for all the people at the circus to see

in the car orbee told katie that when

the elephant walked it swayed from side

to side

didn't bounce up and down like a horse

katie told dad that she really wanted to

try the acrobat trick

mum agreed that this was something they

should try for sure

when they got home they did try it in

the backyard

bad did a pretty good job although he

was a little wobbly

[Music]

when he finished mom applauded and

everybody took a bound then she told dad

that he should try it again with her on

his shoulders

mom laughed until dad announced that the

entire home circus should tickle her

mom shrieked and ran they caught her and

soon they did their own circus act the

famous people pile

[Music]

and do you know that night when katie

and orbee were in bed

orbee reminded katie about his balloon

he told her that

right at this moment there would be a

new crowd at the circus

orbee was sure that they would look up

and see his

big yellow balloon and i know this may

be hard to believe

but i bet almost everybody did

[Music]

did you know some birds fly to the sunny

south for the winter

they fly hundreds of miles which is a

long long way

to the same nest every year without ever

getting lost

and they don't even use a map

it had been a crazy day

katie discovered that if you make a

puddle in the sandbox it sinks away

orbee learned that you have to stand

very still when a bumblebee likes your

pink polka dots

and they both found out that inside an

apple are the beginnings of a little

tree

that wants to be planted it was a warm

spring day

mom told everyone that the day would be

spent outside

as the family was planting pretty

flowers dad kept looking toward the back

of the yard

finally he told everyone to stop and

think about how nice it would be

to have a bird bath in the back

mom thought it was a great idea and soon

they were off

at the garden store there were all kinds

of bird baths some were too big and some

were too small and some were

just silly katie and orbee called and

honked

they'd found a perfect one mom loved the

shape and dad loved the color it would

look

perfect in the backyard orbee wanted to

know where the taps were

as the store people loaded the bath into

the car that explained birds don't use

soap and warm water

most like the water the way it comes

from nature they just splash in it and

clean their feathers

dad told orbee that it was fun to watch

he was sure they would get to see it as

soon as the birdbath was in the backyard

[Music]

at home they discovered how heavy the

bird bath was

with the whole family pulling they

couldn't even get it out of the trunk

dad asked yi ping's father to help

that didn't work either although there

was a lot of grunting the birdbath

didn't budge

tom rode by on his bike and mom called

to him

with tom helping it moved a bit but

it was still too heavy tom thought maybe

dad should just set it up in the trunk

and leave it there

it would be the first moving bird bath

dad laughed and said

mom but nobody wanted to do that

finally satche's dad came over to give a

hand he had a cart

if they could get it out of the car his

cart would take it around to the back

with a one two three the four men lifted

the bath out of the trunk

they struggled and groaned but made it

to the car

sachi's father pushed the cart and tom

pushed him dead and yi ping's dad

held one side each so it wouldn't tip

over

yi ping satya and andy all came over to

see what the excitement was about

even chance jumped out the window to see

if she could help

mom told dad to choose the right place

because once a bird bath was off the

cart

it would never be moved again

everybody there agreed when it was set

up katie and orbee had the job of

filling it

it didn't take much water when katie

looked in to see if it was full

she got wet mom offered all the helpers

some drinks and everyone sat down on the

steps to admire the bird bath

it looked beautiful even chance liked it

chance walked around it a few times and

then she jumped right up

she was very surprised to find water in

it and left right out again

she did look funny and all the helpers

laughed

katie told chance that it wasn't a cat

bath

chance licked her wet paws and seemed to

agree

when all the helpers left dad pointed to

a bird that he felt could possibly be

dirty

perhaps it would stop at the bath

everyone wants to fly around the bath

but

it didn't land dad and the family were

disappointed

and to tell you the truth so was chance

chance was hiding behind a tree nearby

chance loved to chase birds

dad thought they should all go inside

maybe they were scaring the birds

from the kitchen window katie and orbee

watched the bird bath

no birds came chance did though

chance jumped up on the bath again this

time she didn't let her feet go in the

water and

walk slowly around the edge

she took a little drink katie giggled

because

you don't drink bath water but cats

didn't mind i mean chance was a cat

chance jumped down and disappeared into

her bush

another bird started to circle

told dad that she was sure the bird

would love their bathtub

dad hoped so and it did look promising

the birds circled and then it lowered

itself almost to the bath but with a

sudden swoop of the wings it headed up

to the sky and away

[Music]

dad went out and checked the bird bath

maybe there was something left on it

that was sending the birds away

[Music]

when he examined it he found nothing

just water and

bath chance came over and helped dad

look too

she jumped up and surprised dad

he told chance that she was no help

dad left chance sitting on the edge of

the bird bath and walked back inside

when he looked out the window at the

bath chance was splashing the water out

of the bath with her paw

that's when dad began to understand

chance thought the bath was for her

chance was scaring the birds away

mom was in the living room changing a

light bulb

dad katie and orbee walked in dad

pointed out that

they may have made a mistake with the

bird bath

mom looked shocked there was no way that

they were going to get the whole

neighborhood over there again to

take it back to the store

dad didn't want to take it back chance

loved it

chance thought it was a cat bath mom

said that was impossible cats don't like

water

but when she looked out the window she

saw that dad was right chance was

playing in the bath

no birds were going to come near the

bath or the catnip

birds and cats don't go together

dad said he'd head back to the store for

another bath

mom groaned but dad promised he'd be

able to handle it all by himself

when he got home he brought a little

hanging bath it hung from a tree

dad made sure it was too high up for a

chance

this time katie filled it and orbee got

a shower

as they started gardening again a bird

flew by and perched on the side of the

little bath

they might have missed it except that it

enjoyed its bath so much

that it sang a lovely song

dad tapped orbee who tapped mum who

tapped katie

and very quietly they all turned to look

at the bird

it was wonderful to see nature enjoying

itself in the backyard

and do you know that if you like to

watch birds

you could make your own little bird bath

at your house

and i'm sure if you're quiet

a bird will visit you

[Music]

did you know your stomach looks like

this

it helps to eat your food and that's

called digestion

when it eat lot it stretches

hamsters have two stomachs

and cows have four

[Music]

it had been a hurried day

katie discovered that if you don't sit

down and put your shoes on properly

it can take a lot longer orbee learned

that if you don't close the bottom of

the playing cards box

you'll have to pick up 52 things

and they both discovered that a flag

only flies when there's wind

mom showed katie and orbee pictures of a

young dad and some other boys pushing a

green and white bathtub

it was dad's high school bathtub race

katie thought the idea was terrific fun

so did orbee

but he wanted to know how they got the

bathtubs out of the bathroom

he burbled his confusion

dad laughed and said that anything that

looked like a bathtub could be used in

the race

well you know that katie and orbee were

all for anything that sounded like great

fun

[Music]

kitty thought maybe they should have a

bathtub race too

dad chuckled then thought about it a

real bathtub would be too heavy for them

to push

besides they didn't have a spare one but

then had an idea

mom could tell that dad was thinking the

race was a good idea

katie and orbee jumped around the room

in excitement

then they ran through the colorful

fallen leaves to all the neighbors

houses

they gave out bright-colored flyers to

announce the race

orbee noticed that everyone who read the

announcement chuckled

this was going to be fun he could just

tell

everyone in the neighborhood got into

the race they became very

secretive about what they were going to

use big boxes of odd things and old used

wheels were brought into houses and

hidden until a special day

every person wanted their bathtub to be

a surprise

all kinds of giggles and shrieks came

from backyards and behind garage doors

dad chose an old washtub which he told

katie and orbee was close enough

katie and orbee painted it yellow and

orbee added some pink polka dots so

everyone would know who it belonged to

they stuck ribbons and bows on it and a

big homemade flag at the back

[Music]

next they opened up the umbrella great

uncle david had given them and

dad tied it to the front of the tub it

was fantabulous

[Music]

finally it was the day of the first ever

annual neighborhood bathtub race

dad rolled the tub onto the driveway

orbee

was so excited let's try it out he

burbled and hopped inside

katie cheered as she pushed him around

it worked really well

just then orbeez saw ye ping hers was

made from an old baby carriage

she had painted it bright red and worked

really hard at making the front of it

into a dragon's head katie and orbee

just loved

arthur was going to help yee ping

next they saw andes he had an old

cauldron tied to his wagon

he decorated it in all kinds of colors

and he wore his chef's hat to be funny

charisse was going to be his passenger

when they got to the park they saw megan

charlie and mr and mrs covington there

too

their racing tub started out as a square

laundry basin

but you could hardly tell it looked more

like an engine of a train

megan pulled a whistle and orbee tooted

it was

excellent dakota and his friend kip

arrived pushing a cooler that was

decorated with native indian designs and

beads and

feathers his father helped him with the

drawings

satya brought her friend sandra they

used a plastic baby bed

sacha covered it in silks and trimmed it

with beautiful jingling bells

everyone loved what everyone else had

done with their bathtubs

soon all the tubs were lined up at the

starting ribbon tom was the starter

he was dressed up in flashy colors and

carried a big hand bell

he shouted on your mark

get set and clang clank

claimed they were off the mighty shell

or be pushed off and the wash tub

started to roll

katie and the other riders squealed with

excitement and pushers all left and ran

moms and dads waved and cheered from the

sidelines

everything katie looked at was bouncing

up and down just as much as she was

but it was so much like a crazy carnival

ride that she just

laughed harder orbee honked and tooted

as he raced along over the uneven ground

and

zigzagged to avoid the other racers who

were also zigzagging all over the place

two tubs almost bumped together then

orbee heard tom's bell

clang again and tom shouted halfway

switch places everybody it was a mad

scramble as tub riders

left out to become tub pushers and

pushers jumped inside

andy and charisse waited the new

pusher's ready everyone raced off when

the riders bounced even higher than

before

katie was a great pusher but she soon

discovered it was very hard to steer the

watchtower

it wanted to go all over the place

[Music]

orbee was tooting and waving his arms

when suddenly he went sailing through

the air

katie didn't see the little dip in the

ground ahead of them and the wash tub

tipped right over

orbee landed in a heap and katie

stumbled to the grass and rolled and

they both came up giggling

all the other racers stopped and went

over to help after all the race was just

for fun

mom and dad and tom pronounced them just

fine and they scrambled back into their

tub

on a quick one two three count everyone

dashed off again heading for the finish

line

mrs perez stood under a big banner with

a checkered flag raised in the air

it looked like dakota would win he was

pushing as hard as he could

then ye ping came forward and passed him

next megan and charlie bounced ahead

katie and orbee were coming from behind

too orbee tooted and pointed to the

finish line they were

almost there the crowd cheered as the

tubs all bounced and

bumped over the finish line mrs correp

waved the flag dakota won

katie and orbee won second place yiping

and satya tied for third

andy and charisse one fourth and megan

and charlie were fifth by a hair

everybody clapped each racer got a

beautiful ribbon to pin in their shirt

and a toy plastic bathtub mrs peret took

pictures so they could all remember the

day

the first annual neighborhood bathtub

race was a great success

it didn't matter who won at all it only

mattered that everyone had fun

and do you know that's absolutely true

i hope you remember to have fun if

anyone
